Time Out Accra editor Daniel Neilson is a regular visitor to Ghana. The challenge is to stay as smartly dressed as the Ghanaians for business in 35-degree heat, while also fending off mosquitoes.

6.30am. ELMINA, GHANA. A great crowd has been assembling on the bridge for an hour now. Some climb on to the edge of the structure itself, legs dangling seaward. Others take their chores to pass the time; nets are mended, babies fed, buckets cleaned, deals made. The hundreds assembled on the small road bridge were there yesterday and they’ll be there tomorrow. They’re counting the fishing boats back in as they do every morning in Elmina, a fishing town 150km west of Accra, Ghana. Out of the morning mist, one colourfully painted boat parts the calm waves, ducks under the bridge to the harbour. Life begins to pick up pace. Another painted in the colours of the Argentinian flag follows. Two back in. Then more appear, dozens and dozens of long, battered wooden boats chug into view. On each open canoe are about 20 sailors and fishermen, most wearing bright football jerseys. Chelsea and Barcelona shirts dominate, but I pick out a few oddities: Nottingham Forest and Scunthorpe United. I make my way dockside and into the hugger-mugger market place. Flapping fish are being piled into 8 | ROHAN MAGAZINE MAY 2015 ISSUE

large stainless steel pots, cedis change hands, jokes are made, arguments ensue, kids run around and the thermometer hits 32°C. I’ve been a travel journalist for more than a decade and I’ve never seen a more colourful sight than Elmina’s morning fish market. I’ve been coming to Ghana for five years now as the editor of Time Out Accra, an annual printed guide and website. It’s a thrilling place to cover – boisterous and endlessly surprising, but also hot, really, really hot. My most recent trip was the first along the West Coast to Cape Coast, a lively university town, to Takoradi-Sekondi where the oil workers head, and back through Elmina, my new favourite place in the world. On the return journey to a meeting with the General Manager of a new five-star hotel in the city, I’ve time for a bit of nature along the, frankly vertiginous, Canopy Walkway in Kakum National Park. High in the tree cover of this tropical rainforest I can hear the occasional monkey over the screams from excitable school children, but the forest elephants prefer not to be around this series of

walkways. The birdlife is less discerning. Some 266 species have been counted here. It’s a fun diversion, but time to return to Accra. The temperature is pushing 38°C and the air-conditioned car is a relief. Visiting Ghana is not without its challenges, especially when it comes to packing. Firstly, it’s hot. Average high temperatures remain a steady 27–31°C, and I’ve never known it less than that. A light waterproof is also essential as I hit at least one lively storm each visit. The Elite II Jacket has my name on it, and in Scarlet of course – Ghana is a colourful place. The second challenge is that Ghana is in a malarial zone. Avoidance is always the best bet against mosquito bites. Covering up is the most effective way to avoid mozzies (I take malaria tablets too), especially at dawn and dusk when the little blighters are most active. I pack Rohan clothing with BiteGuard,TM it’s proven to reduce mosquito bites by up to 97%. My favourites are the classically styled Frontier Shirt and the smarter Sentry Shirt and Trousers. The treatment, which is recommended

by the World Health Organisation, lasts at least 70 washes. The Ghanaians are a smart, stylish bunch. When I’m meeting hotel managers, tech entrepreneurs or even Ghana’s music stars, they’re always immaculately dressed with pristine pressed shirts and smart trousers. Rohan effortlessly ticks this box with gear like the Worldview Shirt which has UPF 40+ sun protection and wicks moisture well. Add in the zipped security pocket featured in the Maroc Jacket, and Rohan is a bit of a no-brainer when travelling to these hot, sultry places. Back in Accra, I met the General Manager of one of the many new swish hotels springing up across the capital and had a

world-class meal at the Nobuinspired Santoku, but now it’s time to head out into the night to hunt down my real passion: seeing Ghana’s unique highlife music live. Highlife occasionally feels like a continuation of the horn-blasts, shouts of stallholders and general hum of the streets of Accra. The frenetic, polyrhythmic, slightly discordant charms of Ghana’s trademark genre could only have emerged from this city. The origins of the music are the big band sound, melded with Caribbean Tropicana, and traditional Ghanaian music. At +233, a wonderful music venue and one of the few celebrating highlife, I see legendary singer and guitarist Gyedu Blay Amolley. It’s a highlight of the trip. But it’s

‘I pack Rohan clothing with BiteGuard,TM it’s proven to reduce mosquito bites by up to 97%.’

also a trip that includes a midnight boxing bout at the National Stadium, some souvenir buying (well haggling) at the Arts Market, the development of a mild obsession with the grilled fish tilapia accompanied with heart-stoppingly hot sauce and a meeting with football legend Marcel Desailly. But mostly it involved many cold beers on hot streets full of people with big hearts and big smiles.

It’s whisper thin, incredibly lightweight and packs away to next to nothing into its own Packpocket.™ The fabric is a cutting edge polyamide, and despite its appearance, is incredibly tough. It is ultra-breathable, highly wind resistant, and its water repellent coating will keep a rain shower at bay. Stripping weight out of clothing is simple, retaining performance and durability is where the skill comes in. Rohan have been making lightweight gear from the very start and, of course, it’s all very packable and quick drying. The real benefit though can’t be accurately measured. That’s because the greatest thing about lightweight Rohan gear is how it feels when you’re moving quickly and quietly through your world – light, unencumbered and free.

The result is highly breathable and lightweight trousers that are ready to take on anything. As you might expect, they have two zipped security pockets – just big enough for a few essentials. World-wise travellers aren’t fooled by the heat of the day in dry and tropical climates – there is always a need for sundown warmth in the evening.

Sundown Warmth The more air a fabric can trap, the more efficiently it insulates. Our Microgrid and Microrib fleece fabrics work far harder than a normal fleece because they trap more air, preventing the loss of heat from your body. A less dense fabric also means better packability, better wicking, less weight and faster drying. This fabric is the secret behind our best-selling fleeces. 16 | ROHAN MAGAZINE MAY 2015 ISSUE

With a class leading warmthto-weight ratio, Microgrids or Microribs are perfect as a jacket or pullover for active pursuits and equally good as an extra warmth layer for colder or less active moments like sundown in the tropics. It turns out that the best way to stay warm is to wear a fleece full of holes. And every year the choice of tops from this fabric grows.

These tops are not only supremely comfortable technical mid layers. There’s also something about the simple styling and the soft drape of the fabric that makes them perfect for everyday casual wear. And because they are a tad smarter than your average fleece, you won’t feel out of place at the end of the day if the dress code moves up a notch or two.

MICROGRID RANGE

Men’s

Perfect as a layering piece all year round, this fabric is soft, quick drying and amazingly packable. The Microgrid Stowaway Jacket is one of our best-selling men’s fleeces and boasts an unbeatable warmth-to-weight ratio alongside classic outdoor looks.

Some clothing is clever enough to cut it in the city as well as the world’s wild places. Men’s Goas and the Equator Shirt may be ultra-lightweight but they are also heavy duty. They offer excellent protection from the sun and both actively wick moisture away from your body, keeping you cool in the heat or on the most active days. They both pack away tiny and dry in a fraction of the time of their cotton competition, while their synthetic fibres help creases to drop out as soon as you get on the move. Between the trousers and the shirt there are no less than four secure pockets. The Equator Shirt is also treated with our Anti Odour SilverTM technology to keep you smelling sweeter for longer.

TAKE LESS, DO MORE

How to avoid

Whether you’re heading off to the wilds of Burma or the beaches of Cornwall this summer, you don’t want to be laden down with lots of stuff you won’t actually use or which doesn’t do the job you need it to. Whatever your destination, it’s always easy to over-pack, but a bit of planning ahead plus these six simple strategies will help you to streamline your luggage and make sure every item pulls its weight. 20 | ROHAN MAGAZINE MAY 2015 ISSUE

Whatever the reason for a trip, it’s all too easy to take too much stuff. At one time or another, most of us have probably unpacked our bags on our return from foreign shores and wondered: ‘Why did I think I’d need that?’ Nobody wants to be overburdened with unnecessary clothing that never gets used, so it pays to implement a few strategies to make sure every item in your bag pulls its weight and you’re not left buckling at the knees when you grab your luggage from the airport carousel.

1. Layers over bulk.

Layers are versatile and allow you to deal with every weather change a day may throw at you. Base layers, T-shirts and lightweight fleeces take up less space than coats and jumpers and can also be easily stashed in a day sack when you’re out and about. Opt for items that fold away easily and provide warmth and alternatives for different conditions. Focus on items that you know you’ll definitely be using and don’t waste space on things that you think might just come in handy. Base layers and T-shirts can also be folded around your underwear, before being rolled up and packed into your socks to create a space-saving bundle.

2. Know your limits.

Even if you’re going away for an extended period of time, pack no more than one week’s worth of clothes. More than that and your bags are going to become pretty cumbersome. Make realistic decisions about what you’re likely to wear in the course of a typical week – focusing on what you’re planning to do and the clothes you’ll be using. Then give priority to those items that can be washed easily, either by hand or in a machine – depending on where you’ll be staying and the facilities available. It’s a good plan to make a list of what you think you need, lay out those items on the floor or on a bed and then be ruthless about removing anything that isn’t really necessary.

3. Modern arts.

Many of us probably have a favourite T-shirt or two. But while cotton items are fine for lounging around the house, they have their limits when travelling. In hot or damp climates they can become waterlogged within a matter of minutes and they also take up more space in your bags than items made from more specialist fabrics. These days, there are innovative options that are not only quick drying, but which also help moisture to evaporate more effectively and pack down into a more compact space.

‘Layers are versatile and allow you to deal with every weather change a day may throw at you.’ You don’t have to sacrifice the practicalities and look of a T-shirt or polo shirt, but packing a few made of a modern fabric will provide more alternatives.

4. Keep it simple.

Opt for an uncomplicated colour palette. By doing so, you’ll make sure most of the items you have will match each other and provide you with a number of alternatives, regardless of how diverse your programme of activities might be. If everything matches, then those three pairs of trousers and three shirts will yield nine different outfits. Greys, blues and earth tones are all multi-faceted colour choices. Darker shades are more forgiving with marks, while lighter, more neutral colours won’t absorb heat so readily in hot climates.

5. Select all-rounders. Make a list of all the things you’re likely to be doing while you’re away. While you’re about it, take a look at the long-range weather forecast and factor your findings into your plans. Chances are that your itinerary will include a variety of different activities and at least some of your clothes can be used for most of them. If you have a pair of trousers

or polo shirt that can do equally well for a cross-country hike, city tour or restaurant meal, then make sure they’re in your bag. Good quality merino items are also an option. Relatively lightweight, they have the advantage of being adaptable to both hot and cold conditions. They can also deal with a lot of wear while staying odour resistant.

6. Think big.

Wearing your bulkiest items will free up space in your luggage. This applies in particular to items such as shoes and coats. Try to wear your heaviest shoes for travelling. Any other pairs – and take as few as possible – can be packed away and filled up with items such as socks, underwear or electronic chargers to make optimum use of the space within them. If you’re going somewhere you’re expecting rain, try to make sure beforehand that your waterproof does the job you’re expecting it to. There’s nothing worse than getting caught in a storm and realising that water’s creeping in through the seams of your outer layer. With coats and shoes in particular, try to think less about your initial outlay and more about the cost per wear – better quality kit tends to pay for itself in the long run. ROHAN.CO.UK | 21

NEW Men’s Maroc Trousers Colour: French Blue Code: 03366  £68

Technical travel clothing doesn’t need to look like technical travel clothing. Simple looks, secure pockets and easycare fabrics all do the trick – performance hidden behind style. Rohan Linen PlusTM fabric brings the Men’s Maroc Jacket, Zephyr Shirt and Maroc Trousers to life. It’s a cinch to look after, is very durable and only crumples slightly in a gentle attractive way without crossing into the world of unsightly creasing.

LINEN YOU CAN LIVE IN

Everyone loves the charm of classic linen but not many of us can carry off the ‘dragged through a hedge backwards’ look. Traditional linen yarn with technical fibres creates a unique fabric with the look and feel of linen yet with real world practicality. The Linen PlusTM range has been a proven favourite amongst Rohan customers for many years. It was originally designed for people who loved rugged travel but wanted to avoid the backpacker look. The surprise is that it has also turned out to be favourite workwear for everyone who is lucky enough to avoid starched collars.

Linen has always been popular for dry climate travel – it’s soft and refreshingly cool and comfortable next to the skin. Unfortunately, natural linen doesn’t really cut it. It’s not particularly durable and wrinkles as soon as you look at it. Linen PlusTM solves both problems and the result is astonishing. It is incredibly durable, resists creases and washes and dries easily. The women’s Malay Jacket, Shirt and Top, combined with the Tunis Trousers are the perfect choice for summer trips and travel. They’re comfy for the long haul, yet smart enough to fit the bill in a decent restaurant.

Performance meets

classic style Sometimes it’s good to zig when everyone else is zagging. Instead of making tough travel gear feel tough, it could be soft. And how about easy effortless style rather than combat looks with patch pockets, old tent fabric and too many zips.

MEN’S TAILORED

Men’s Journal Jacket Colours: Shale Rock (above) and Potters Clay (far left) Code: 03635  £125

City protection inspired by the wild places, or urban clothing for adventure? Whichever way you approach it, meshing ‘technical’ with ‘easy to wear’ means more versatile performance gear. And applying the lessons learned creating clothing for the world’s wildest places to urban clothing goes back a long way at Rohan. It’s one of the things that makes us unique. Just because a shirt, jacket or a pair of chinos is destined to live in town, there is no good reason why it shouldn’t share all the benefits of outdoor performance clothing. Shouldn’t all trousers be wind resistant with secure pockets? Wouldn’t jeans make more sense if they were easycare, less bulky and more comfortable? Wouldn’t

Relaxed, technical and impeccably tailored, our Journal Jacket is the perfect travelling companion.

shirts be better if they wicked away perspiration, dried faster and needed little or no ironing? And if all the clothing you needed for a week away working in a foreign city packed neatly into your hand luggage, wouldn’t airports become much more palatable? We think the answers are pretty obvious. We’re just surprised that so few other clothing designers share our reasoning. Rohan clothing is liberating; it is light, breathable, packable, good looking and easy to care for. It will keep you protected and comfortable, whether you’re heading for cities of glass and steel or mountains of rock and ice; wherever you make your world.

WOMEN’S TRAVEL CLASSICS

Wardrobe essentials with hidden technology. Just because travelling can be unpredictable and complicated at times, it doesn’t mean your clothes need to be. Good design is simple. It isn’t about how technical something looks. It’s about creating everything you need for all-day comfort and protection, with as little fuss as possible.

When you choose Rohan as a travelling companion you are relying on over forty years of experience. This wisdom is distilled into hardworking adventure kit that is stylish and decluttered. It’s clothing you can wear all of the time, whether on wild adventures or for times that demand less effort. Nowhere is this clearer than the classic styling of wardrobe essentials. The Thai Trousers give an air of effortless calm with their subtle muted tones and a soft silk look and feel. And it’s certainly easier to relax, wearing fabric that quickly transfers moisture and heat away from the body, and knowing that you’re protected from the sun’s UV rays. Team them with any of the tops here and you are well on the way to a versatile kit list that’s perfect for hot, dry climates and humid adventure travel.

Our Stratford-upon-Avon shop has recently moved – you can now find us at 38 Sheep Street. If you’ve not been to that area of Stratford before, it’s well worth a visit. Sheep Street is where you’ll find the independent traders and some great cafes and restaurants, so you get a great mix of interesting stores on one side and the best places to eat on the other. Another bonus is that on-street parking is only £1 for an hour, so that helps if you just want to pop in for a ‘Deliver to Store’. Sheep Street is also the main route between town and the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, so it’s a great place to have dinner before a show or stop off for supper afterwards. Samantha and Simon Wheeler are the new owners, and after working for and with Rohan for seventeen years, they are the perfect pair to guide anyone
