winter insulation The Húsavík Jacket is the most technologically advanced winter jacket we’ve ever made. Fully insulated and absolutely waterproof, this jacket looks like a smart city parka but has the performance of a full-on mountain jacket. This is protection without compromise – rely on it to protect you from the fiercest winter weather. The game-changer is the insulation. Thindown® technology converts fluffy, space-hungry down into a thin, tightly-packed sheet. Thindown® harnesses the tremendous insulating power of natural down whilst re-engineering the construction to allow for a fully waterproof face fabric. The tough, 3-layer Barricade™ shell system means that as well as being wrapped in down, you’re also protected from the wind and rain. This is aided by the use of the Durable Water Repellency™ finish, fully taped seams, storm cuffs and YKK Aquaguard™ zips. The Húsavík Jacket comes with an adjustable hood with a bonded peak. Nature empowers. We call it green care. We use the power of nature to support disadvantaged and marginalised adults, children and young people who may be struggling, for whatever reason, to move forward in life. Since launching Green Light Trust in 1989, we’ve been on a steadfast mission to positively transform the lives of individuals who may have been disadvantaged, suffered challenges, or been to the depths of despair through mental health or addictive behaviours. We believe that our woodland environments and nature-inspired initiatives have been fundamental in enabling hundreds of adults and children to increase their health, hope and happiness. Our project work includes a vast scope of tailored activities, suitable for wherever people are in their personal journeys. We run bushcraft workshops, extended mental health recovery programmes, wellbeing initiatives, and bespoke training and activities with specific needs in mind. 8
Our expert staff and support workers know how difficult it can be to engage in something new and unknown. We approach self-development at a flexible pace, and are dedicated to helping people set and succeed in their life’s goals. And whenever possible, we all come together and we all cook together. “The silence of the woods helps to give me time to leave old thoughts at the entrance and make new ones.” Women’s Wellbeing course – Suffolk “Being outside helps with my stress – Green Light Trust has opened my eyes to the world around me.” Woodland Minds course – Suffolk
Many of the people we work with are struggling with multiple issues that do not have a quick fix, and we meet them at various stages of their life journey. They may take a great deal of time to navigate their way through personal life challenges, with many ups and downs. We work with individuals at their own pace and continue to provide support until they are either able to move on to a more independent life, or to another organisation that can help them with the next step. The people we work with are often the most removed from the natural environment and it may not occur to them how nature could help. We come together to learn new skills and gain confidence. If you’re disadvantaged and marginalised, it’s unlikely you’ll have the funds for outdoor clothing. That’s where Gift Your Gear and Rohan comes in. We have a boot room full of donated outdoor kit which is a great help, as keeping everyone warm and dry is the first step to a great day. Tom Brown, CEO.
For some individuals, coming to Green Light Trust is the one thing they have to look forward to, and that sustains their wellbeing and purpose. Subject to available funding, we do not limit the length of time someone is able to access our services.

The fleece jacket. Evolved. Made from super-soft, technical grid fabric designed to trap warm air, this stretchy and highly comfortable fleece top is perfect as part of a layering system to provide unrivalled protection from extreme weather. The exterior is sleek and smooth, reducing pilling but also disguising the fact that it’s a fleece, so it won’t look out of place on a post-walk pub lunch. On the interior, this fleece really comes into its own. The grid fabric traps pockets of air next to the skin, creating an insulating layer, but thanks to its wicking properties you’ll always stay dry and comfortable. The two easy-access, secure pockets make for handy stowage, and the thumb loops provide an extra bit of coverage when it gets nippy.

winter adventures It’s time to rethink a big night out – along with almost everything else. The world has turned. Someone pressed reset and forgot to mention it to the rest of the group. Long haul became no chance and short hop became a slim hope. We all had to rethink summer. One thing we now know for sure, the COVID virus is here and we need to work out how to make this winter memorable for the right reasons. We have no idea whether the optimists or the pessimists are right, but we know who we want to spend our time with. How we get around has changed. Reminded of the simple pleasures of slower progress, everywhere there are bikes, strolling couples, joggers, speed-walkers, moochers, hikers and ramblers. As the sky takes a break from the constant criss-crossing of aeroplane tracer lines, we have all rediscovered the grounding, mindful pleasures of rushing less and seeing more. As destinations were cancelled, we were left with learning to enjoy the journeys, no matter how short they had become. Noticing more and connecting in a deeper way with the world around us. And that’s what this winter offers.
12
Uninterrupted by grand, far-flung plans, this is your chance to learn your patch through your feet more deeply than ever before. Enjoy the timeless chore of rubbing wax into leather walking boots and then giving them the chance to creak back into life. Years of dependable service aged into their leather and the wrinkles from your longest days cut deep. And now, this winter, some of your best days on the hill are to come. Get ready for the clearest night skies you have seen. Crisp paths of frozen peat, palest blue skies, alpine starts in the half-light, head torches with spare batteries packed and the timeless joy of a brew on the hill with old friends. Your breath clouded in front of you at the start of the day and your cheeks burning red before the fire in the evening. And as you probably already know, Rohan has all the kit and caboodle that you could ever need to make this winter one to remember for all the right reasons. Get ready for winter.

waterproof trousers For some, the just-in-case protection of waterproof overtrousers is essential – they are a reassuring shell on days of relentless rain. As an alternative to overtrousers, we also make a range of dry trousers that look and feel like perfectly normal trousers yet are fully waterproof and highly breathable. Waterproof overtrousers don’t get better than this. Our Vapour Trail Overtrousers for men and women pack small enough to be a permanent fixture in your rucksack. They feature 2.5-layer Barricade™ technology and are completely waterproof, highly breathable and extremely durable. They have been treated with our Durable Water Repellency™ finish to stop the face fabric wetting out. This industry-leading process has been proven to operate at 80% effectiveness after twenty washes – which for waterproof trousers probably means over ten years. Features include a hidden pocket that doubles as a Packpocket,™ an adjustable elasticated waist, knee-length leg zips, and an adjustable snap-tab hem for an easy fit over chunky walking boots.
There is another way. And if you haven’t tried a pair of our dry trousers, it’s probably time you did. They look like regular trousers – Dry Roamers are a pair of chinos with stealth waterproofing, and Dry Frontier Trousers are waterproof trousers disguised as regular hiking trousers. A whisper thin, highly breathable, waterproof Barricade™ lining keeps you dry when the heavens open; the rest of the time you’re wearing a warm pair of winter trousers. They are perfect for the hills in Britain, and because of their understated looks, they’re fine for wearing around town on wet days. They have developed a very loyal following amongst those whose work takes them outdoors but have no wish to look overdressed.

alpinism Rohan was founded in 1972, in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, by husband and wife team, Paul and Sarah Howcroft. Their idea was to take advantage of the new and groundbreaking advances in textiles and use them more intelligently. The design of functional clothing should not be limited by tradition – or be a slave to the whims of fashion. Instead it should be relentlessly focused on performance. Paul and Sarah had a fearless and uncompromising approach: if materials didn’t measure up – and most didn’t – they would develop their own. Starting from their kitchen table and developing hand-machined samples, they brought a new and rigorous view to textile technology and garment design.
18
Within this first decade of innovation, Rohan gear focused on the needs of a new generation of mountaineers. In fact, Rohan was worn by Reinhold Messner and Peter Habeler’s team on the first oxygenfree ascent of Everest in 1978. And this triumph of ‘light, fast and free’ changed climbing forever.
Rohan soon became regarded as the prime innovator in the concept of functional adventure clothing – championing the usefulness of such outdoor requirements as lightness, low bulk, quick drying times and sun-protective fabrics.
19
Rohan has always been at the cutting-edge of fabric technology. Their first product, the Rohan Salopette, was made from a blend of polyamide and stretchy elastane. At the time, this ‘softshell’ fabric was revolutionary; now, of course, softshell fabrics are the standard choice for performance legwear. Rohan was also a pioneer in the development of lightweight, wadded insulation. Warm, packable and with a wind resistant shell, it was perfect for active outdoor use, and offered many advantages over the ubiquitous polyester fleece – the most famous early articulation of this concept was, of course, the ultra-classic Olfio. Their original preference for waddings, though, was finally ‘proved right’ – synthetic, puffy, wadded insulation became incredibly popular and a staple layer around the turn of the century – a couple of decades after Rohan had first championed it.

If we learn to love nature, protecting it becomes obvious. Green Guardians helps disadvantaged young people who live on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The majority of these groups have never been out to the Dales, even though they live within an hour of it. Green Guardians provides activities for a range of groups who are based near the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Programmes typically involve conservation, tree planting, path laying and visiting farms. Connecting with nature that is close by and yet seems inaccessible can have a massive benefit to wellbeing, and allows people to swap daily concerns and stresses for fresh air and new perspectives. Green Guardians supports a wide variety of young people who are disadvantaged in some way: temporary homeless, young carers, young people who are not in education and those living in deprived areas. A typical success story would be Young Carers from Leeds – Green Guardians gives these young people a chance to get away from their stressful daily lives and responsibilities. Getting out, walking or working in the outdoors seems to allow people to open up. Connections between these young carers then happen naturally. 22
Young people who would have never met have formed friendships. This has led to members of Young Carers Leeds setting up their own group. Reducing isolation, encouraging new networks and helping young people feel empowered are all critical to creating brighter, hopeful futures. Green Guardians will find themselves doing a whole range of activities: Navigation and map skills Making bird and bug boxes Citizenship science Footpath laying Tree maintenance Bushcraft Wildflower meadow restoration Participants leave, realising they can do new things in a different way, often with higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and a new-found connection to nature and the environment.
About Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust:
The natural connection is often something that can be missing from people’s lives. We’re here to put that right, and getting quality outdoor kit from Gift Your Gear is an important piece in the jigsaw. It’s a great idea to repurpose quality clothing that is getting underused. I’d say it couldn’t find a better home than with Green Guardians.
Green Guardians is run by Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) – a small charity doing big things to support the people, landscape and wildlife of the Dales. To date, the charity has helped to deliver inspiring projects worth around £28 million in the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. These projects cover areas as diverse as countryside apprenticeships, supporting local communities, education and outreach, restoring woodlands and wildlife habitats, and improving access and understanding of this special place. technical insulation Once you’ve stopped the wind and rain getting to you, keeping warm is a lot of hot air – literally. Trapping the warm air that your body creates is the key. And the new Octa™ Yarn lining used in the Mistral Jacket is an extremely lightweight and efficient way to do this.

We call it string (vest) theory. Making a warm jacket isn’t all that difficult. Just stuff it full of heavy wadding. Making a jacket that’s warm, lightweight, packable and versatile is a different story. It requires the highest quality materials, advanced design, and many years of experience in harsh environments. At Rohan we really know winter. Octa™ Yarn, featured in the Mistral Jacket, offers an extremely high warmth-to-weight ratio in conjunction with superb breathability, compressibility and packability. It’s the basis for our advanced alternative to the standard polyester fleece, and a perfect choice for hillwalking, trekking and all active outdoor use. The first secret of Octa™ Yarn lining can’t be seen with the human eye: it’s the sophisticated form, on a microscopic level, of the individual polyester fibres that make up the fabric. They have a hollow core, together with a total of eight ‘side fins.’ In cross-section the filaments have the appearance of a star – with a hole through the middle. This advanced, three-dimensional shape creates a huge amount of space around the filaments. This traps a large volume of air – in turn providing an insulating capacity far higher than standard polyester fibre. To order go to rohan.co.uk or call 0800 840 1412
The second secret – on a slightly larger, visible scale – is the way the Octa™ Yarns are applied to create the final lining fabric. They are knitted into a very open, thermally efficient waffle or honeycomb pattern. This construction combines with the microscopic form of the individual fibres to create a lining which is superbly breathable, incredibly light and, for its weight and packed volume, astonishingly warm. It’s the perfect choice for high-output, active wear.

Providing a better life for young carers in Blackpool. Getting a taste for the great outdoors is tricky if you don’t have the right kit. Keeping protected, warm and dry in proper clothing gives young carers the best chance of a positive first experience. If you are a young carer in Blackpool, the chances of you getting out into the nearby hills and forests are slim. The irony of this is that if you’re carrying a burden far beyond your years, the need for fresh air, exercise and friendship is great. Rohan customers almost certainly know the power of wild and beautiful places, so Gift Your Gear together with Blackpool Carers Centre have teamed up to make things happen. Of course, all the hard work is done by the centre. They run a Duke of Edinburgh programme, teach navigation, run respite youth clubs and residential training, while Gift Your Gear has been able to provide the kit that enables young people to get and stay relatively comfortable in all weathers. As Andy Gunn, the lead of the Time Out team explains,
36
“We’re all about respite breaks for the people that need them – for many it’s a rare chance to be a young person again. These young people don’t see themselves as carers and many simply accept their role as the way things are; to them they are just looking after their mum, dad, sister or brother. Meanwhile, of course, their childhood may be slipping by.”
Caring can have an isolating effect on individuals, and the programmes that Blackpool Carers run are designed to tackle this. Carers are constantly dealing with a loved one’s illness, mental ill health, disability and substance misuse. This, of course, is mostly unpaid, with levels of responsibility way beyond their years. Some of these carers may be as young as five years old! Walking and talking, learning new skills and one-to-one meet-ups all give critical support to those that most need it. And getting quality outdoor kit from Gift Your Gear makes more things possible. Andy enthuses about the scheme, “It’s brilliant, it really is. We couldn’t possibly buy kit for everyone who wants to get out and about through our schemes – it’s become an important part of making things happen.” blackpoolcarers.org
For many of our clients, we are offering their first experience of the great outdoors. They may well have never heard a cockerel crow before, or been up close to a cow. We’re really proud to offer these first inspirational touches with nature and then be able to take it further and help develop a lifelong love of the natural world, which is much more accessible than most of our clients initially imagine.

merino wool Merino wool is one of nature’s finest insulators. Made more practical with Rohan technical know-how. Merino wool is beautifully soft and cosy, with excellent antimicrobial properties. But traditionally there have been downsides and trade-offs between natural softness and practicality. That’s why, for our woollen range, we have given nature a little help by taking advantage of the latest developments in fabric technology. All our performance knitwear starts with soft, natural wool, and then it’s our task to make it ready for the harsh realities of tough travel, the demands of constant everyday use, and for active outdoor days. Nothing beats the soft, comfortable feel of real wool. It’s just that, in its natural state, it doesn’t meet Rohan standards of durability and practicality. Adding technical fibres to the mix gives the best of both worlds. We offer three different types of technical wool, each in its own way taking this beautiful and natural fibre and developing its practicality with modern synthetics. Merino Fusion Utilising a blend of merino, polyamide and elastane, Merino Fusion offers the luxury feel of merino with a durable, stretchy, easycare finish. Perfect for lush feeling woollies with lots of added practicality and durability. This fabric is made up of 90% merino wool for comfort and warmth, 7% polyamide for
strength and durability, and 3% elastane for just the right amount of stretch. Merino Union This blend works perfectly next to the skin. 63% merino is mixed with 37% synthetic fibres to provide a beautifully soft, anti odour base layer or T-shirt that will work as a technical base layer or a classic, simply styled top. This hybrid fabric naturally regulates your body temperature, so it is great at keeping you cool in the heat, and warm in cold conditions. Merino Cool Polyamide is a tough synthetic fibre that adds recovery and easycare functionality to the Merino Cool fabric. It also makes it much easier and quicker to wash and dry, and ensures it keeps its shape after continued wear and washing. Merino wool gives impressive performance – it’s naturally antimicrobial, temperature regulating, high-wicking and soft. Lyocell was originally created as an alternative to silk, so it’s incredibly soft against the skin. It’s also naturally high-wicking and breathable, like merino wool, and has excellent durability and recovery, like polyamide. Merino Cool fabric is made up of 52% merino wool, 35% lyocell and 13% polyamide. Soft, practical and durable.

Merino wool is a natural fibre grown year-round by merino sheep, consuming a simple blend of natural ingredients including sunshine, water, fresh air and grass. Every year these sheep produce new fleece, making wool a completely renewable fibre.

Fluffy, lightweight, packable down is the finest insulation when it’s dry. But its thermal performance plummets when wet. Treating the down with a durable water repellency creates a hydrophobic finish – the improvement over untreated down is remarkable.

Down without the downsides.

Ideal for cold, changeable urban conditions. Our Downtown Jackets are filled with a high quality blend of hydrophobic 650+ down and feathers, to offer excellent warmth with a water resistant finish. As you’d expect from a down jacket, it’s extremely warm and highly compressible. But, unlike many down jackets, it’s also very resilient. A highly effective hydrophobic treatment dramatically increases the down’s resistance to water. It also dries faster and retains its warmth after exposure to moisture.

Hydrophobic down solves down’s greatest flaw by giving significant protection against water ingress.
The thermal efficiency of untreated traditional down plummets when wet.

Out of crime and into hope. Changing the cycle of deprivation and despair that many young men find themselves in, and helping them to take a different direction.
The impact of FACENorth so far... The number of young people incurring charges dropped by 28% in 2015, a further 62% in 2016 and by 82% in 2017. Due to GDPR, these figures couldn’t be matched for 2018/19, but stats from Police Scotland for the local area related to the young people we work with were... 48
• In 2019 police calls involving stolen
vehicles went down 66% compared to 2018, motorbike crime reduced by 40% and anti-social behaviour by 58%.
• Bonfire Night 2018 saw a 60% reduction in anti-social behaviour compared to 2017.
• In 2019 house break-ins saw a reduction of 31% compared to 2018.
A group of young men in North Edinburgh had been involved in anti-social behaviour and youth crime, many involved in serious offences. 90% of this group had experienced four or more ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) risk factors. Locally and city-wide it was agreed that a different approach was required. Pilton Youth and Children’s Project set up a new initiative called FACENorth (an acronym for Focusing on Alternatives to Crime Edinburgh North). The project began in April 2014 and has had a range of successes, engaging with young people involved in or at risk of criminal activity and anti-social behaviour. Taking time to build relationships and trust with young people enables the group to challenge these young men on their behaviours without disengagement. Maintaining trusting relationships with workers is key to the success of the project which helps the group move forward with their personal goals. Over the last six years, the programme has been designed and led by the young people. It has allowed them to develop skills and self-worth, helping them take pride in their achievements and restoring their place in the community. The support is ongoing and there is no time frame to the service. Young people engage voluntarily and can access support at any time. The project includes a scheme of work, community based clean-ups and the Midnight & Beyond programme where young people are taken out of the area until 3.00am! Different elements of support include teaching, employment, court and family issues.
We’d like to thank Gift Your Gear for all the amazing kit. It’s made a massive difference to getting a lot more young men and their families outdoors.

Rohan product recall. 1980 Bags. Care label failure. have become aware that with thirty We years’ constant wear, regular hard use and several hundred washes, the care labels on the first Rohan Bags manufactured in 1980 may start to fade, ever so slightly. Although we have not received any actual complaints, we are keen to protect our enviable reputation for reliability, durability and longevity.
If you purchased a pair of the affected Bags in 1980 and are unsure how to wash them without referring to the care label, please contact Rohan Customer Services on 0800 840 1411. We will be delighted to provide you with full washing instructions or, with proof of purchase, a new pair of Bags, free of charge.
