Everything you need may not sound quite as rock and roll as anything you want but it’s the only starting point we understand. Our range is built on the original Rohan design principles that were conceived around a kitchen table in North Yorkshire forty years ago and that still make us unique. Light but durable, highly packable and fast drying gear means you can take less, travel lighter and get more done. Technical benefits are hidden rather than overt, so our clothing is much more versatile. It excels on trails and mountains but fits a much wider range of settings – bringing the technical virtues of performance gear to the everyday. Rohan is designed and constructed to last. Subtle styles and bomb-proof build mean we have an enviable reputation for longevity. Our gear will look good ten years after the latest designer creations have become obsolete. Rohan appeals most to those who have chosen not to run in the latest consumer race. We aren’t aiming to raise the bar of aspiration and ostentation higher and higher through false promises and nonsense. We make gear that is appreciated by our customers. Whether you’ve been travelling with us since the beginning or have recently joined in, we hope you’ll enjoy this birthday celebration. Apparently, life begins at 40. Cheers!

Joy, joy, joy!
From humble beginnings creating around our kitchen table, Rohan has grown into a company with over sixty shops all over the country with a number of them nestled in our roots in Yorkshire. We are proud to be surrounded by a myriad of people, places and businesses that stand out as extraordinary and newsworthy.
Rohan co-founder Sarah Howcroft peals like a bell, “Joy, joy, joy” as she describes the company’s early days in Yorkshire, working with a team of passionate people driven by the total dedication of everyone involved. From its upstart origins Rohan, had this great big, bold idea – “Change the way people dress – in total.”
Sarah Howcroft who founded Rohan with Paul Howcroft
Generations of Rohan As a young child I remember thinking, “Why is my Dad always wearing those funny green trousers?” Now I am the one who lives in my Rohan trousers 24/7, and my own children are the ones saying “Why are you wearing those all the time?” From rohantime.com
‘We were doing something we all loved.’ Though Sarah’s enthusiasm is as happily contagious as a colliery band chorus, the decision to base Rohan in Yorkshire was a purely pragmatic one. Rohan’s roots and routes in Yorkshire are as old as the company itself. Rohan’s first base in Skipton sat at the central point in the company’s vital triangle – the raw material came from Lancashire, the manufacturing happened in Leeds, and the see-saw, back’n’forth of perspiration and inspiration came from the walks and trails of the Yorkshire Dales. ‘Easycare, lightweight, quick-drying and protective’. Crucial to Rohan’s Big Idea was the feedback from the first customers, the mountaineers and outdoor activists who became the first Rohanists.
In the beginning Chris Townsend
Once upon a time, there was an outdoor shop in Manchester where I worked for a while. One autumn day, a young man came in with a bag of garments and asked to see the buyer. Just another company rep, I thought, as he disappeared into the office to see the notoriously grumpy and bad tempered manager. Shortly afterwards the manager appeared. “Give some samples to my staff and if they like it I’ll stock it,” he snapped. The young man showed us his garments – breeches and salopettes made from a smooth stretchy synthetic material and jackets made from a thin fabric that was a mix of polyester and cotton. The clothes were lightweight and seemed insubstantial. On the hills I wore tweed breeches, wool pullovers and shirts and a heavy gabardine cotton jacket with a coated nylon cagoule for when it rained, which was standard outdoor clothing at that time. However I’ve always been interested in trying new gear and if this stuff did what the young man claimed then it was really innovative. 4
Plainly put – people bought gear from the people who had designed it. People tested the gear and returned with forthright feedback that allowed proper progress. ‘I have worn Bags constantly for 30 years. They are as right now as they were on day one.’ Forty years on, Sarah’s still walking and mountain biking in the kit Paul and Sarah created, still convinced of the wisdom of the original design ethos, and still looking to improve the gear. ‘Tencel is a fabric for the future. I have worn it a lot in the outdoors, and it is super soft’. Tencel is used in the new women’s Radiant Roll Neck Top. And in her role as founder and editor of Rohantime, Sarah is still central to Rohanists and their stories. ‘Whenever we talk about Rohan, back will come the stories of early Rohan and the people. It’s their stories that are so important.’
The next weekend I set off into the Peak District wearing the stretchy breeches and the polycotton jacket. The weather was wet, windy and cool. I was quickly impressed with the clothing. The breeches were warm and very comfortable and when damp didn’t rub my thighs or drag down on my legs like the tweed ones. I liked the jacket too. The thin fabric kept out the wind just as well as the heavier gabardine jacket. Both breeches and jacket dried much faster when wet and I never wore tweed or gabardine again. I liked the designs – roomy zipped pockets secure on both breeches and jacket, a good hood on the jacket and studfastened elastic below the knees on the breeches. Back in the shop on Monday I enthused about the garments to the manager. “Right, we’ll stock them,” he growled, “and you’d better sell them”. This all took place some 35 years ago. The young man was Paul Howcroft and the company was Rohan – who were to revolutionise outdoor and travel clothing in the next decade. Oh, and I did sell the garments. Magnificent 1. Everest 2. Aconcagna 3. Denali 4. Kilimanjaro 5. Elbrus 6. Vinson 7. Carstensz Total
My interest in mountaineering is long-standing, having begun by a chance meeting with Sir Chris Bonington in 1975. His book, Everest The Hard Way, was being edited by my best friend’s father. I stood in the hallway, football under my arm, and began talking to Sir Chris – I was hooked. What would the world really look like that high up? I was a member of the Aberdeen Mountaineering Society for my duration in Aberdeen, and started serious high altitude climbing in 2003, when I summitted Aconcagua. At 22,835 feet, it is the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalaya, and the highest one in South America. I loved it.
Over the years, I have raised tens of thousands of pounds through running and climbing, for St Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough, which specialises in looking after those with terminal illness. I have decided to pledge all of my royalties from my book, The Hardest Climb, to the hospice, who also receive all of the fees from the talks that I give all over the world. For more of the story go to rohantime.com Alistair’s book is available widely.

By November 2007, I had summitted all of the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, the so-called and coveted Seven Summits – summitting Vinson, the highest mountain in Antarctica, Denali, the highest in North America, Elbrus, the highest in Europe, Kilimanjaro the highest in Africa, Carstensz Pyramid, the highest in Indonesia, and Everest, the highest in Australasia. These were all summitted at the first attempt, which Everest News has confirmed as a record – though that was never the intention.

My association with Rohan has been long-standing, kitting my expeditions out from the York Rohan store on many occasions, with the assistance of Gary, the manager. I have tested their kit to the extreme from the top of Mount Everest to the South Pole – at the bottom of crevasses, in avalanches, in ice-falls, trekking in to base camps and in all aspects of adventure life – it is unbelievable equipment. It has never, yes never, let me down, broken, ripped or snagged. The materials used, the attention to detail and the comfort when wearing the gear is, quite simply, the best on the market and I’ve tried them all.

Technology disguised as clothing... Not all of us feel the need to fly price-tag kites or to broadcast branded banners. And though a few of us do take a genuine, some may say peculiar, delight in the innovative design and technology that makes the Kombi Jacket so weatherproof, we don’t necessarily need to telegraph ‘the science bit’. We call it ‘technology disguised as clothing.’ We could have graffitied these jackets with snappy, attention-demanding slogans – ‘Serious walking gear disguised as casual clobber.’ But at Rohan we believe in keeping the design philosophy where it belongs – in the design department. And we always remember that while Rohanists love to walk the walk, they don’t always feel the need to talk the talk. 6

Staying true takes courage. Not the sort of courage it takes to parachute or achieve a first ascent, but a quiet, consistent, deliberate courage. Staying true to an ambition, staying true to a set of principles and staying true to yourself.
The Ether Trousers were designed in 2012. They’re made from hollow core polypropylene which make them incredibly light and almost indestructible. It’s a fabric that was not available in 1985, but if it had been, the Howcrofts would have loved it for sure. You could see the Ethers as the Rohan brand distilled into one brilliant pair of trousers.

Rohan scores over ordinary clothing in the following ways: 1 Weight. Rohan weighs considerably less than conventional clothing of the same size. 2 Pack size. Rohan packs very small. A pair of bags will fit in a soft drinks can. A whole wardrobe in a rucksack. 3 Fast drying / easy care. Fast drying means not needing to change after being caught in the rain. Garments can be washed out in a hand basin or mountain stream and worn soon after. Ironing (if required) can be done easily or fast drip dried. Local laundry services up the Orinoco are not likely to damage your precious clothes either. 4 Comfort. Rohan’s soft fabrics are light, non-itch, breathable and yet windproof, giving a much higher level of comfort over a variety of climatic conditions than normal wear. 5 Reliability. We expect our garments to go with our customers for four months continuous use in the Himalayas. We don’t expect them to let people down. (Obviously we are not infallible, just more careful with both design and manufacture.) 6 Security. Pockets are designed to be as secure as possible from pickpockets, thieves and vagabonds. Most garments have secure zipped pockets, but we encourage clients to keep valuables in trouser pockets, as they are more difficult to pick and pants are less likely to be left lying around in sudden warm spells. 7 Versatility. Because Rohan garments are not ‘combinations’ but individual units, they are more versatile. The same few garments used either together or individually can cover most weather conditions.

Reuse. Recycle. Rethink. Over time our clothes become cherished items, loaded with the memories of the times that they were worn, the holidays they were taken on and the photographs they appeared in. If you change your mind about the colour or gain a couple of pounds and things don’t fit as well as they used to, you can pass it on to ensure it has a second life on www.recycleoutdoorgear.com where you can swap, sell or donate your gear to a charity and let somebody else benefit from the many years of functional use left in the item.
There is another way. If you bring your old shirt into Rohan Harrogate we can arrange (at a sensible cost) for your shirt to be turned into beautiful bunting perfect for summer garden parties and used for many years to come. It will be turned into 5 metres of lovely shirt bunting, keeping as many of the details as we can, collars, pockets and buttons, leaving you free to buy a new favourite Rohan shirt.
One shirt lasting ten years is better for the environment than ten shirts each lasting a season. Sustainability through longevity is very important to us. There comes a point in every favourite shirt’s life that it just can’t be worn anymore; when it’s got a bit of paint on the sleeve or it’s gone a funny colour from the sun cream. You know the one, that old favourite sitting in the wardrobe waiting for the day that it gets sent sadly to the charity shop to be sold on as rags.
Yorkshire God’s own county and the birthplace of Rohan. We have no less than 7 shops in Yorkshire. Here are some reasons to make a special visit: Rohan Shipley Combine your visit to Rohan in Shipley with a wonderful day out, enjoying the galleries, shops and restaurants at Salts Mill and the old village of Saltaire. The Mill and surrounding area have often been used by film crews because of the wonderful, unique architecture and the unspoilt, historical, industrial legacy of Sir Titus Salt. The canal, river and newly refurbished Roberts Park are just a short stroll down the main cobbled street. From there you can walk up Shipley Glen (take the tramway at the weekends) and onto Baildon Moor for a more strenuous walk. Visit The Boathouse Inn on the banks of the river Aire – popular during the summer months where you can watch the narrow boats go by. Don’t miss the Saltaire Festival from the 6th – 16th of September; it just gets better every year! Rohan York
Sustainability through Longevity
House Of Trembling Madness – Stonegate pub, great food, very cult following, features a great spirits and beers shop downstairs. Evil Eye – Stonegate – Hedonistic bar. Saffron’s gift shop – Our neighbours and good friends, they sell some weird and wonderful things. York Hog Roast – best meat sarnies around! Trevor Rooney’s Ghost Walk – a great guy, very eccentric. He was on Come Dine With Me – a very funny fellow! Rohan Beverley England’s tallest man, William Bradley, was Market Weighton’s (10 miles from Beverley) most famous resident, standing 7’9” tall and weighing in at 27 stone. On the wall of St Michael’s Chapel within St Mary’s Church is a carving of a rabbit with a pilgrim’s bag, said to be the original basis for Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit.
On a visit to The Burren National Park – a landscape like no other – I again started thinking about preserving areas such as these so we can all enjoy them. I was dressed for the day in some interesting pieces from my Rohan collection and I found myself pondering on the issues round sustainability and longevity in outdoor and travel clothing as well as those special areas that offer us such joy. I paused for lunch on the rocks overlooking the Atlantic Ocean with the Aran Islands in the far distance. Looking down I realised I was wearing my oldest Rohan garment, a 31 year old Savannah jacket closely 10
followed by a pair of Rohan Bags of similar vintage. It struck me sitting on my warm rock that the very fact that I am still using these items regularly is a fantastic example of sustainability through longevity. I pondered on the fact that sustainability was built into the Rohan clothing range from the very start in 1972. Garment weight, windproof, quick drying, loads of safe storage and longevity was the design brief for Bags. They can also be washed at low temperature and are quick drying which in today’s world is another useful contribution to sustainability. Sarah Howcroft from rohantime.com
The weekly Pocklington Market has been around for just shy of 1000 years. Beverley appears in The Doomsday Book. Beverley Food Festival in October has a large number of food stalls, promoting the best of Yorkshire. The White Horse Pub (Or Nellies, as it is known after the charismatic landlady Nellie Collinson who ran the pub up to the 1970’s) is still fully lit by gas lamps (although they did get electricity into the building about 10 years ago!)

Rohan hand luggage One grey winter’s morning I woke up to be confronted with the overriding need to see my grown-up son. The fact that he lived in Pasadena in the environs of LA meant an 11 hour flight. At this point, I realised maternal instinct/carbon footprint no competition. ‘It’s a mother thing’! The trip had to be focused, catch up and see a little of his part of the world. Six days tops.
We flew into the west over Baffin Island and the top of Canada and down the West Coast of America landing 11 hours and four meals later at LAX airport. Off I trotted, ignoring the baggage reclaim – when you get off the plane the other side you are ready to go. No standing in long lines, documents in hand ready to smile nicely at the immigration officials.
There was another gem of an idea developing. I had a chance to see if I could successfully do the week’s trip with what I stood up in. Stupid and why, came to mind. Liberating and interesting to myself. All your worldly goods for the trip on your own body. So the decision was made, flight booked and body clad. My one-body wardrobe consisted of my well worn Rohan Bags, Rohan Pampas, T Plus short sleeved, Microgrid fleece and lightweight cross trainers. The Rohan layering system at work.
As I trotted towards the main exit a completely irrational thought struck me, would I recognise my son. Having not seen him for over a year strange things happen in the mind of the mother. Ring any bells? My trot was accelerating with anticipation when I felt the firm hands of two imposing airport security ladies, one on each arm, and we were heading for another part of the vast building. If you have ever been ‘guided’ by security you will know what this feels like.
I glided through the airport departure lounge and slid into my seat bum bag on lap and observed with a smile the chaos that ensued with the stowing of what is laughingly called hand luggage.
After some dialogue based on ‘the purpose of my visit’ and scrutiny of my documents and questions as to why no baggage. “Everybody has baggage on long haul or cabin luggage at the very least.” I was told.
I meant to say it uses less fuel and causes less CO2 emissions. What would have been smart would have been to blame time and anyway clothes are so much cheaper in The States. Even better to have said because it’s possible with Rohan, they may have even warmed to that. Anyway I was released into the arms of my son. Mission accomplished. Sarah Howcroft from rohantime.com Please share your travelling light stories with us at rohantime.com Generations of Rohan Nearly 40 years on and we are still wearing Rohan clothing. My parents enjoy orienteering and mountain biking and have Rohan coats and over trousers for keeping warm afterwards. Rohan kit has served us well – it washes and wears effortlessly. We were recently talking about the longevity of Rohan clothing, and 1987-2006 for a jacket seems to hold the current record in this family. From rohantime.com

He is also a trained chef with many years experience and he does his bit in trying to lead as sustainable and responsible a life as possible. He has recently finished his second article for Rohantime, titled ‘a Spring Micro Adventure.’ It starts: When two of my friends suddenly announced they were going to do their first real cycle tours this year – Land’s End to John O’Groats and Germany – there was only one thing to do. Here at Rohan, we do things in a slightly different, rather more understated way. We wouldn’t carry machetes, marine flares or survival bags for a stroll round the local lake. And we don’t burden our everyday walking jackets with needless mountaineering features – or call them something ostentatious like the “Himalayan Extreme Jacket”. While we always advocate suitably protective attire, we realise that – although our green and pleasant land can often be cold, wet and windy – there’s a time and a place for Kevlar trouser reinforcements, down mitts and jackets with a built-in avalanche transceiver. And that place is probably not next weekend in the Peak District. This gear is designed to work perfectly in the environment where it will actually be worn. With a name to match – we give you the Dale Jacket. Available for men and women.

Take less do more Nature abhors a vacuum. Suitcases hate empty space. Like a hungry child eating a packet of custard creams. Whatever space God or Higgs-Boson gives us, we try to fill it. Rohan can’t rewrite this Universal Truth. But we can help you cope with it. Rohan clothes pack down tight and light. Leaving you more space for other travel essentials that can’t yet be miniaturised or digitised – like Moleskine notebooks. And extra custard creams. The speed of light ‘Less is more’ might sound like ‘war is peace’ or ‘up is down’ Orwellian newspeak. We prefer to think of it as a paradoxically pleasing riddle for the designers who make our lightest-ever weatherproof jackets. ‘Wear less, feel more’. Naturalists and naturists, walkers and runners, shaved legged cyclists and hairy handed hill climbers tend to agree that packability and portability are as pertinent as permeability – that freedom of movement is as valuable as freedom from a damp bum. ‘Leak less, laugh more’. Rohan solves these riddles. Leaving the rest of us free to roam high and dry, saving our conundrums for crosswords, and saving our cross words for the summer’s showery jet-stream kink. 18

HF Holidays – the UK’s largest walking and leisure activity holidays company – has been bringing walkers to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales on walking holidays for nearly a hundred years. Still today, their comfortable Country Houses situated near the village of Malham, with its famous Malham Tarn and Malham Cove, and Sedbergh at the foot of the Howgill Fells welcome thousands of walkers every year.
In the Yorkshire Dales National Park high moorland fells gaze down on a patchwork of green fields and handsome stone villages. It is a natural outdoor playground made just to be explored on foot. The Yorkshire Dales is a wonderful place to walk whether you enjoy gentle strolls or more challenging hikes. Take to the famous Yorkshire three peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough with impressive summits and rewarding days for the keen hillwalker. To the east are the equally enjoyable hills of Buckden Pike and Great Whernside. Scramble up Gordale Scar, explore the natural beauty of Malham Cove and walk to Janet’s Foss waterfall. Think of the valleys of the Ribble, Wharfe and Aire each with beautiful low-level walking. Wharfedale has superb riverside walks too that lead to the striking ruins of Bolton Abbey or

F rty Fo years
of innovation. Forty years of community. Forty years of travel and outdoor adventure. Forty years of Rohan. Do you remember this ad? A series of Rohan Can advertisements ran from 1983 – 1987. The illustration above is the 1987 version. The ad ran in a number of the glossy Sunday magazines.
The ad, by the way, was as simple as it was dramatic. To illustrate Rohan’s pack-small ability, it showed a can of cola, open at one end, with a pair of Rohan Bags stuffed inside – and above it, the entertainingly ambiguous headline: Rohan Can. That was 25 years ago.
