Secure pockets Pocket design at Rohan is about precision, detail and keeping your most important items safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallets is more than just an inconvenience. Pockets are secured in different ways, either with ‘touch and close’ fasteners, together with roll-over tops or zipped closures. Sometimes they are hidden and feature discreet micro zips.

Security pockets Zipped security pockets keep your valuables safe.

Packpocket Many of our garments feature a Packpocket. This handy addition converts pockets into space-saving storage by compressing the garment into itself. You could also use it as a travel pillow when it’s all packed down too.

Articulated knee dart Knee darts allow the trousers to move with the natural form of the leg.

The detail within the fabric Waterproof When your clothes are wet you transmit body heat much faster, so it’s important to ensure you stay dry. All clothing with this symbol are guaranteed to be waterproof. And highly breathable membrane technology means you won’t get wet from the inside either. Look out for our Barricade Standard. Concealed tri-ring A concealed tri-ring keeps your keys safely stashed.

Cutting down windchill can make more difference to your comfort and safety than the amount of insulation you are wearing. Garments that carry this icon are windproof. Durable Water Repellency Our DWR finish is an advanced treatment which dramatically increases the water repellency of our fabrics. On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximizes breathability. D-ring A D-ring, incorporated onto a belt loop, secures any accessories.

There’s no doubt about it: hiking is hot work. So, to help keep you cool and comfortable, we developed a Dynamic Moisture Control (DMC) wicking finish. This coating allows fabric to rapidly disperse moisture away from the body and across the garment to be evaporated, leaving you cool and dry. Cold Protection We use a variety of methods to help protect you from the cold. From the soft brushed backing of fleece linings, to sophisticated ‘needle out’ knitting techniques which create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric to trap air and keep you nice and warm. Fast Drying

Scuff guard A discreet hem scuff tape at the rear protects from rubbing boots for garment durability.

All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit in unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time. Insect Shield® If you’ve ever visited a humid coastline or mountains, you’ll have likely felt the wrath of the local biting bugs. Safe to say any insect that bites can really take the fun out of the outdoors. Protect yourself with Insect Shield®, an invisible and odourless permethrin treatment that lets you enjoy the wild without the bugbears. Sun UPF 40+ No matter where you venture, summer weather can be unpredictable. It could be dreary and wet one minute, then warm and sunny the next. But with our UPF 40+ clothing – which is tested against international standards – you can be confident you’re always sun safe.

Blended for movement An insight into our use of MultiFlex We design our clothing to be ready for any challenge you throw at it. Whether you’re travelling or in the great outdoors, everything we create reflects our focus on our five principles: Protective, Lightweight, Packable, Easy care and Versatile. To make sure we’re kitting you out in the clothing you need for the journey you’re planning, our trousers often use a blend of polyamide and elastane to create what we call MultiFlex. Polyamide fibres are long lasting and tough, so tough that they’re often used to make parachutes. This synthetic, nylonbased fibre is soft to touch, and brings durability to MultiFlex, while elastane is a more malleable synthetic, adding a resilient stretch that enables a garment to retain its shape no matter how active your adventures. We select the best blend of these fibres based on the season and climate you’ll be in, and the activity you’ll be doing, using different blends in different garments, or sometimes even different blends across one garment, to enhance the benefits of these truly versatile fibres. We take this innovation further with MultiFlex Light, which offers the same blend of polyamide and elastane in lighter-weight fabric, for your more active, warm-weather outings. While MultiFlex features consistently across the garments we design for the cooler temperatures of autumn, winter and spring, MultiFlex Light is better suited to the brighter, warmer weather of Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Rohan kit is for every journey, so it needs to be packable and easy care. Pack minimum-iron kit like our Vista Trousers, featured on page 11, into your backpack and they’ll still look fresh a couple of days later, when you throw them on for the warmer days of a multi-day hike. Our Vista Trousers are the first to feature a new addition to our MultiFlex range – MultiFlex Vapour. Perfect for summer, this lightweight blend has a higher elastane content and means we can now offer a version of MultiFlex for all seasons.

The durability of polyamide fibres makes them ideal for use in our protective clothing. We blend with elastane for freedom of movement, and can then apply coatings like Insect Shield® for added protection when you’re out exploring. You can see this use of MultiFlex in action in our Pioneer Trousers, featured on page 7. We want our clothing to be as lightweight as it can be for its intended use. So, when you’re travelling in our MultiFlex range, you can focus on nothing but where you’re heading, and hardly notice the Rohan kit that’s moving with you. The light, breathable fabrics we blend to create MultiFlex Light are also quick drying, an essential feature of any kit you’re planning to travel with. Behind the seams An interview with Rohan’s product design team. It’s not every day we reveal the inner workings of Rohan. But when so much technical design and development goes into each pair of our trousers, we felt it only right that we shared.

What’s your background and experience? What do you bring to the Rohan team? Through school I did design, design technology, graphics and art. I just love drawing basically. I went to Loughborough University and studied industrial design, and whilst there I did a year out working for a motorcycle company. This was massively eye-opening for me, designing gloves and seeing where stuff was made. After graduating, they hired me back full time as the clothing and accessories designer. Thinking about it, it was a really good bridge as it’s all about function with that sort of clothing - very protective, safety comes first, and then you can start to think about styling. After three years there I started at Rohan, and I’ve been here for seven and a half years now. So, it’s been quite a journey! What makes Rohan trousers special? We were the original innovators of outdoor clothing in the UK, this all started with trousers and still is the core of the range for us - the true DNA of the brand. The innovation continues today with every new trouser we design and develop, we are always striving for the next and better version. This is one of the most exciting aspects and challenges about design! The first step is to put ourselves in the customer’s shoes: who is going to be wearing the trousers? What are they going to be doing? What do they aspire to do in them? These are some of the questions we continuously ask and challenge ourselves with.

Once we can answer these questions, the design process begins and it is always to produce the best product for the end use. Fabric selection is a huge part of this, and goes hand in hand with design. For instance, we have the District Chinos (p16/17) in the range that are produced from a specially selected and developed fabric. This feels and looks like a luxurious cotton, but has the added benefits of stretch, increased durability and a concealed elasticated waistband for extra comfort. It's all of these details and thought that makes our trousers special. How does this benefit customers? I think there are probably two main benefits. The first is whatever the customer is doing in the trousers, or is aspiring to do, they can achieve it. So, if that’s hiking, we have a trouser which has stretch in key areas, abrasion panels if you come across rocky terrain, all the pockets you need for valuables and other details which have gone into the design. The other main benefit is that people want to know they are getting value for their money. They’re spending their hard-earned money after all. So it’s all about performance. That’s why our customers are so loyal and passionate. Our clothes are designed to perform. Where does your team get their design inspiration from? One of the great things is that everyone here is different. There are four of us, one’s recently graduated, so she’s coming in with brand new ideas, and another has worked in the performance industry so brings with her a totally different way of thinking. Combine that with my experience in the classic, more industrial product design industry, and our last member who has been more fashion-based, you have a great range of insights which help us build a product. In terms of inspiration it often comes from personal experience. We’re all keen outdoors people, we travel a lot. It’s amazing where the inspiration can come from.

Rohan develops a lot of innovative materials for your trousers. How do you decide the materials that need to be developed? This is probably one of the most challenging parts, because if you haven’t got the correct fabric, then you can’t have the correct design, which means you can’t have the correct product at the end. I think probably for the last two years because of everything that’s been going on in the world it’s made that even more difficult. So in terms of the timeline we work on, we are currently starting to design for Spring/Summer 2024, so we have to work near enough two years in advance of when we want to be launching the product and that’s because of the testing that goes on. We use a lot of different fabric mills from all around the world, always picking specialists in the area we are designing for. For trousers, the mill we use produces materials with some fantastic stretch leg-wear qualities; really good performance, high abrasion. We talk to these specialists but then it’s up to us as designers to have the knowledge to select the correct fabrics, because if we choose something that’s too lightweight or too heavy it’s not going to work for the product.

How do Rohan decide what material is used in each pair of trousers and what is the benefit to your customer? It's about thinking what the end purpose is for the trousers. A good example would be the Fjell trouser which is for someone who is going to be up in the hills in winter, on a pretty fast paced walk through lots of different types of terrain, getting covered in mud, getting wet and needing loads of pockets. So we look for stretchy, durable fabric that’s quite robust. Then we think about the knees, and the seat which need to be a really tough canvas but have stretch as well. It always comes down to what the customer is going to be doing and where they’re going to be doing it.
