From Buckinghamshire to Shetland
Putting the Eos Jacket to the test Karen Williams, our Product Director, tells us about her experience testing our new Eos Jacket in the wild and unpredictable weather of Britains most northern islands. The journey to Shetland is an adventure by itself with wild seas, strong winds, and over 24 hours of travelling. I could probably fly to New Zealand quicker than getting back home to Unst, the most northerly inhabited island in the UK. The weather in Shetland is unpredictable and highly changeable, making it ideal for product testing. You don’t need to wander far or high to find out if your outdoor gear works. The journey to the island provides a great opportunity to test products. Being outside on the wet and windy ferry deck feels very exposed and is a good indication of how the jacket would handle being out in the hills. When faced with the elements you’re forced to focus on the little details. Drawcords that are too long that blow about in the wind, or small fiddly adjusters that you can’t use quickly with wet and cold hands will quickly become problems. It’s in these harsh conditions that you can really get a feel for what the products strengths and weaknesses are. I’ve been lucky enough in my career and personal life to have travelled and experienced many adventures, landscapes, environments, and weather - but my home in Shetland is where I have tested some of our most important products.

Creating new products is mostly about the journey. It’s a process that can take about 24 months from concept to delivery. We come up with the idea, test the fabrics and trims, design the style, and test it again before it reaches our customers. It then can take a few more months to see the response and hear the feedback that we can take into next seasons new products. When we test our fabrics in the lab, we keep them under constant conditions, so when I’m trying out new product concepts, I like to keep that approach in mind. There’s a walk I like to do that follows the coastline and passes by a freshwater loch. The terrain stays fairly flat so I maintain a consistent body temperature the whole time, allowing me to feel how the products work in different weather conditions. I also test the products on a route with more ascents and descents so I can assess how the products work when your body temperature increases and decreases. Thanks to how far north the island is and how little light pollution there is, you can often see the Northern Lights in Unst. On this particular trip, the lights made a spectacular appearance, and I stayed out for hours watching them dance in the night sky. It was here that I really felt the protective warmth of the Eos Jacket come into its own. On that night watching the northern lights, I didn’t once consider the cold, even though in reality, it must have been nearly freezing. We aim to make products that you can put on, go out, and enjoy your adventures - whatever the weather.

Safe Winter Walking
The winter weather shouldn’t stop you from enjoying a hike, walk, or ramble through the countryside. The winter landscape holds some stunning sights for all levels of outdoor enthusiasts, but it’s essential to make sure that you’re fully prepared for your cold-weather adventures. Alan Ward and Helen Menhinick are highly knowledgeable and experienced Mountain Leaders who have been kind enough to offer some tips to help keep your winter adventures safe and enjoyable.

Get out early! With fewer daylight hours available to us, it’s important to start early to be out on the hills and mountains by daylight – and home before it gets dark.

Plan your food Start the day with a good hearty breakfast and take lots of snacks with you. In cold weather, eating small snacks throughout the day is more efficient than a prolonged lunch stop – so pack lots of easily accessible snacks to keep you going!

Layer up Always bring a high-quality waterproof layer, insulating mid-layers, and a wicking base-layer. It’s a good idea to carry spare gloves as they can easily blow away when taken off, and it’s always advisable to pack a spare insulation layer in case temperatures are lower than you expect.

Always be prepared The winter weather can be unpredictable, and there’s no such thing as being too prepared. When exploring more remote areas, it’s recommended to bring a medium sized shelter, a sit mat, and a first aid kit.

Choose your route Ensure that the route you choose matches the skill and experience level of those going with you. And if you’re on a solo adventure, always communicate your planned route to a responsible person at home.

Our clothes are designed to help you thrive in harsh winter conditions. Using the technology below, you can cultivate your own personal micro climate while you explore the winter landscape. From protecting you from the rain to keeping you warm in the cold - take a journey through the technology used in our range of winter clothing.
Waterproof Rohan waterproofs are designed to be windproof, breathable, and of course, completely waterproof. The waterproof capacity of a garment is measured in mm. Our Barricade Standard ensures our clothes perform at 20,000mm minimum, which is more than 10x the British standard for waterproofs.
Durable Water Repellency This advanced treatment is applied to the outer fabric of our range of waterproof and water-resistant clothing. It works to force water droplets to bead up and roll off the outside of the garment rather than soaking through. On its own, it effectively protects you from light showers and splashes. When combined with our Barricade technology it reduces the chance of the fabric wetting out and provides additional protection from the elements.
Synthetic Insulation Designed to be lightweight, breathable, and warm – our Insuloft synthetic insulation provides practical protection against the cold during active adventures. Made from an advanced synthetic wadding, this fast drying and durable insulation is the ideal choice for staying warm without adding weight to your outfit.
Hydrophobic Down Down clusters possess a remarkable ability to trap air due to their intricate structure and composition. These clusters consist of numerous tiny filaments that radiate outward, creating a three-dimensional network of interconnected air pockets. These pockets function as insulation barriers by effectively trapping and containing air. Our hydrophobic down builds upon the natural properties of traditional down while addressing one of its limitations: its vulnerability to moisture.
Cold Protection When temperatures drop, you can rely on our clothes that carry our Cold Protection icon. land A look into the creative process behind the Rohan Autumn/ Winter 2023 Range Designing a range of Rohan clothing requires a mixture of creative thinking, meticulous planning, and a boundless passion for creating technical clothing. To our design team, the clothes we make are more than just garments, they are the stories of adventures yet to be had. No one understands the demands of this process better than Rohan Design Manager – Alex Delong. We sat down with Alex to learn about his creative approach and find out a bit more about the inspiration behind our Autumn/Winter clothing range. 30

Natural inspiration For this Autumn/Winter season, I decided to build the range around the idea of the outdoor elements of Land, Sky and Sea. We then developed and refined this concept to connect to the three main collections of the range.
Land - Designed for everyday outdoor activities. This collection is built around the ever-present, reassuring, and supportive nature of the ground beneath our feet. These products are the bedrock of the range and have been for years. With natural earthy tones, and colours that emulate the feeling of exploring nature and the land beneath your feet. Sky - Designed for travel and city life. The sky element of our range is designed to evoke a sense of freedom and adventure, with no restrictions and the ability to be open to new experiences. Whether you’re at home or abroad, this collection helps you to feel relaxed and comfortable in your surroundings. Sea - Our more active range. This collection
encompasses the power and moody nature of the sea. The sea is fast-moving, changeable, and adaptive to different environments. It carves its way through the landscape undeterred by obstacles – which is exactly what the products in this range allow you to do. The collection features dark colours combined with some high-contrast colours for bursts of energy.
Pretty much every new season starts like this. We create a new theme and then explore what it means for us as a brand. Once we have this concept nailed down, we allow our design team to expand and explore it. This then drives the mood and inspiration which influences the aesthetics and features of the range. The development continues until we have a selection of products that represent the original concept behind the range.
sea From design to deadline From the initial stages of planning out the concept of the range to having the finished products ready for launch can take up to 18 months of work. Which when you’re as passionate about technical clothing as we are, is time well spent.
