Stay cool and dry in even the hottest climates with our Dynamic Moisture Control technology.

Dynamic Moisture Control is a permanent wicking treatment that works to rapidly spread moisture across a wide surface area of the garment. This allows the fabric to dry much faster and enables you to feel comfortable in even the hottest of climates.

This technology works to draw moisture away from your skin, meaning that even during the most active pursuits, the DMC treatment will keep you feeling dry and comfortable. In hotter conditions, you will benefit from the evaporative cooling effect as moisture rapidly evaporates from the fabric.

Rohan ambassador Helen Menhinick is a Mountain Leader, business owner, Rescue Emergency Care (REC) first aid trainer, and a National Navigation Award Scheme trainer.

With an infectious passion for the outdoors, Helen is successfully carving out a space for women in the world of outdoor guiding. Her business Bryn Walking for Women provides guided walks, Mountain Training, NNAS courses, and REC first aid courses. Her group is becoming quite the source of community for women her age, and many of her regular members have found significant mental health benefits from Helen’s walks.

As an expert in her field, Helen is the ideal candidate to put our gear through its paces. We sent her a selection of our shirts to see what she thought of them.

Here is what she had to say: The Pennine Shirt

What I liked: The shirt is very lightweight, and it dries really quickly. It also packs down quite small which is very handy.

Where I wore it: Hiking in sunny, hot weather. The fit: A lovely fit. Not too tight so you stay nice and cool and protected from the sun. Overall impression: Lovely and soft, lightweight, and perfect for hiking. I really like this shirt!

The Pioneer Shirt

What I liked: I like the built-in vents in the chest pockets and on the back of the shirt. This shirt is very quick drying which is really handy. Where I wore it: Hiking - low and high level.

A good fit - and thanks to the built-in vents it kept me cool on hot days.

Overall impression: When you need protection from biting insects and harmful UV rays, this shirt is a great choice.

The Eave Shirt

This shirt is very soft and comfortable. It performed well in active scenarios like teaching a first aid course.

Where I wore it: I wore this shirt while I provided some indoor training courses.

A very good fit. Slightly fitted, giving it a smart look but still very easy to move around in. The sleeve length is perfect.

Overall impression: A very smart and comfortable shirt.

Sun Protection - UPF40+

Feel the freedom to explore and adventure in sunny climates with our sun protection technology – offering you effective protection from the dangers of UV radiation.

All Rohan fabrics are tested in line with internationally recognised standards to determine their effectiveness at blocking UV rays. Only fabrics that are graded over UPF40+ qualify to be in our sun protective range.

This means that for every 40 units of radiation, the garment will block 39 leaving only 1 to contact the skin –significantly reducing your exposure risk.

It’s important to use sun cream on any areas not covered by the garment. Protection may be reduced with extended wear or if the garment is stretched or wet.

Insect Shield® technology is designed to protect you from insects including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, fleas, chiggers, and midges.

This permanent, invisible, and odourless treatment reduces the chance of bug bites by an impressive 97%. Artistic adventures in pioneering shirts

John Dyer is a contemporary British artist known for his vibrant and expressive paintings that celebrate the beauty of nature and the human connection to it.

He’s an internationally recognised artist and has exhibited his paintings in galleries and museums worldwide. His work has been featured in numerous publications, and he has been the artist in residence at The Eden Project for the last 23 years.

Inspiring the next generation

Alongside his art, John runs an educational outreach program called Last Chance to Paint. This sees him travelling all over the world to visit endangered species and engage with tribal cultures. The aim of Last Chance to Paint is to raise positive awareness of environmental issues by engaging children in the arts to create deep personal connections to the natural world, tribal groups and culture, in school-aged children around the world.

On expedition with artist John Dyer

John is a long-time friend of Rohan and has worn our clothes on many of his expeditions. His most recent adventure took him and fellow artist Joanne Short to Kenya where they collaborated with the Born Free organisation to look at the issues surrounding wildlife and to get an insight into the lives of the people living in this incredible landscape. John and Joanne chose to bring along clothing from our Pioneer range to help them on their adventures and keep them protected.

Here’s what they had to say about the clothes:

Kenya can be quite a harsh environment when you’re not used to it. The heat can be heavy, and the risks posed by potential insect bites are hard to ignore, so it’s important to wear clothing that keeps you cool while offering protection from the sun and biting insects.

The Rohan Pioneer range is absolutely perfect for this kind of expedition. We found the secure zipped pockets really handy while travelling through the airports - it’s nice to know your passport and documents are safe and protected.

Protection when you need it most

The durable and tough fabric used in your Pioneer clothing is invaluable when walking through the terrain. The foliage can get caught and cause rips and cuts, but our

clothes kept us safe and unharmed, and the wicking ability of the fabric prevented us from feeling sweaty and uncomfortable.

The Insect Shield® protection built into the fabric really gave us peace of mind while we were there. Another important factor here is the colour of the clothing. Dark colours like blue and black can attract dangerous insects like the tsetse fly and mosquitos so the neutral and environmentally appropriate colours of the Pioneer range were perfect. The fact that the clothes also protected us from the unforgiving sunshine was a real help – especially given the amount of dust in the air over there! If we’d been covered in suncream the dust would’ve stuck to our skin and caused a lot of discomfort.

The ability to wash the clothes and have them dry overnight was incredible - we would’ve had to pack twice the amount of clothes otherwise!

interview with colour specialist Jodie Sandham

Express yourself in colour

We recently sat down with Jodie Sandham, our colour specialist in the Rohan design team, to learn more about colour and the process behind choosing the colours for the Rohan range.

Here’s what she had to say:

Colour is highly subjective. Most people have a favourite, and many of us have colours that we dislike for seemingly no obvious reason. Some colours can make us feel uplifted, and some can dampen our mood. All these factors can make the task of choosing the right colour scheme for a clothing range rather challenging. At Rohan, we believe that choosing the right colour for a garment is nearly as important as choosing the material it’s made from.

Our design process isn’t led by trends. We design our clothes to last a very long time, so we put a lot of focus on the longevity and practicality of the garments. Because of this, we want the colours of our clothes to feel timeless. Our ability to refrain from following industry trends allows us to have more ownership over our colour schemes.

From concept to creation

When planning the overall colour scheme of a range, we start by creating a concept based around the intended end use of the products. We then take that concept and build a mood board of inspirational images that capture the mood and feeling of the range. From there, we create a conceptual colour story with colours that evoke and reflect that same feeling. This allows us to pick out a selection of shades that will eventually become the colour family for that range of clothing. It’s a very collaborative process that involves a lot of consideration around how the colour of the garment will make the wearer feel.

But it’s not quite as simple as just creating the right colour scheme for a single range. The Rohan layering system plays a large role in our colour story. It’s really important to create colour families that will flow and complement each other across ranges and styles, to try and ensure that any combination of outfits could be layered together cohesively.

Designed with you in mind

When designing our garments, our customers are our main focus. To choose the right colours for clothes we must consider how the end user will feel in the garment. For our range of technical outdoor clothing, we can use brighter and more playful colour families – whereas our range of travel and city-led clothing wants to portray a smarter and more comfortable style.

The colour of a garment can completely change the way you perceive it – but what we choose to name the colours in our range is equally important. The pairing of language and colour can change the way you feel about a colour. We spend a lot of time choosing the perfect names for the colours of our clothes to make sure that the perception of the colour matches the original design intention.

The significance of colour goes far beyond aesthetics. By understanding the link between colour and perception, we aim to forge a meaningful connection between the garments we make, and those who wear them. Timeless designs, built to last a lifetime.
