Giving old kit a new life

At Rohan, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy spending time outside, and the right kit to wear while they’re doing it. That’s why we set up our Gift Your Gear initiative in 2012, to enable as many people as possible to have life-changing experiences in the great outdoors.

Connecting your kit with those who need it Access to the right kit can be a barrier to getting outside, and with your help we’re working to change that. Through our industry-leading Gift Your Gear initiative, we’ve worked with over 750 charities, community organisations and youth groups across the UK. We’ve enabled these organisations to run outdoor activities they would otherwise not be able to, and helped their participants to make lifelong memories.

We’re able to support so many fantastic causes because of the useable outdoor kit that you, our customers, donate during our Gift Your Gear campaigns. The waterproof that’s seen you across coastal paths could protect someone living on the streets from a downpour; the coat that’s kept you cosy on winter dog walks could do the same for an unpaid carer as they experience their first ever camping trip. Anything that you’re able to donate, from any outdoor brand, will make a real difference to one of our beneficiaries.

Donate to make a difference

We accept clean and undamaged kit, such as waterproofs, warm jackets, fleeces, walking trousers, technical base layers, winter accessories like hats, scarves and gloves, and outdoor children’s wear. We also accept usable rucksacks, walking boots and wellies. You can donate in any of our Rohan stores or online at rohan.co.uk/giftyourgear; your donation can be from any brand and, as a thank you, we’ll give you 15% off your next full-price purchase.

Our outdoor clothing often lasts much longer than we need it to, meaning so many others could make use of the kit hiding in the back of your wardrobe. Donate your pre-loved outdoor kit to our Gift Your Gear initiative, extend the lifetime of your clothing, and help our beneficiaries reap the physical and mental health benefits that we know come with spending time in the great outdoors.

How to donate

Through our Gift Your Gear initiative, we collect donations of useable outdoor kit from any brand and distribute these to charities, community organisations and youth groups across the UK. When you donate your kit, you’re helping us to support our beneficiaries in having life-changing experiences in the great outdoors.

Donate in store

Your donation can be from any outdoor brand. Take your clean, useable outdoor kit to any of our 53 Rohan stores, from 3rd October - 30th October 2022, and while you’re there you can take advantage of 15% off any full-price Rohan purchase as a thank you for your donation.

Donate online

Register your details at rohan.co.uk/giftyourgear to receive your free returns label and a 15% off discount code via email. Package your useable outdoor kit, attach the label and head to your local Post Office.

What to donate

We accept clean, useable outdoor kit that’s not in need of repair. Donations can be from any brand; kit such as waterproofs, warm jackets, fleeces, walking trousers, technical base layers, winter accessories, rucksacks and walking boots will make a huge difference to our Gift Your Gear beneficiaries.

Excluded kit

If your outdoor kit is clean and useable, we’ll be happy to take it off your hands and pass it to one of our beneficiaries. Unfortunately, we can’t accept donations of outdoor equipment, such as that used for camping, climbing, snow sports or water sports. We’re also unable to accept underwear, sleeping bags and any kit that is unclean or in need of repair.

Prospering in the Peaks

Since launching our Gift Your Gear initiative in 2012, we’ve been collecting donations of outdoor kit and distributing these to meaningful causes across the UK.

We want to enable as many people as possible to access the great outdoors, because spending time outside is powerful. For Crisis’ Progression Coaches, it’s one of the steps in supporting their members out of homelessness.

What started as monthly walks in the Peak District organised by the Crisis Skylight in South Yorkshire, one of 11 hubs the charity runs across the UK, has now become the Moorlands Programme, a collaboration between Crisis’ Progression Coaches and the Peak District Rangers.

The Moorlands Programme is for anyone supported by Crisis, and means the charity can now offer activities like hiking, climbing and foraging as part of their health and wellbeing care, where the aim is to grow the self-confidence, self-esteem and resilience of all participants.

Adventuring outside can be daunting if you’ve never had the means or opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, but the exhilaration that comes with completing a challenge in a new environment is a vital confidence boost. No matter the activity, Crisis’ Progression Coaches and the Peak District Rangers are there to offer support and words of encouragement.

The people supported by this programme are survivors – they’re out of their comfort zones, but they’re guided by people who are at home when they’re out in the Peaks. Participants don’t need to worry about the route they’re following; they have no responsibility other than getting the most out of their surroundings and proving to themselves that they are capable of thriving in new situations.

Through Gift Your Gear, we’re providing outdoor kit to Crisis members, so they can make the most of the great outdoors. We’re proud to work with such a fantastic charity, who work tirelessly towards ending homelessness. Wellbeing with The Wallich

Sometimes spending time in the great outdoors isn’t voluntary, and durable outdoor kit isn’t needed for a day of adventuring, but for protection against the elements for someone who doesn’t have a roof over their head.

The donations of outdoor kit that we collect through our Gift Your Gear initiative go a long way to help the work being done by charities like The Wallich, one of our newest beneficiaries, who are doing something about homelessness in Wales.

Operating under three core objectives – getting people off the streets, keeping people off the streets and creating opportunities for people – The Wallich offer a range of services with the aim of tackling whatever led someone toward homelessness in the first place. This includes counselling, cooking classes, wellness activities, art therapy, creative writing, access to work and volunteering opportunities.

The latest addition to this range of offerings is a new, eight-week personal development programme in the great outdoors. The Mountain Wellbeing Programme will see participants walk and climb across Snowdonia with a mountain leader and psychotherapist, building physical and mental strength at the same time as having the opportunity to learn exciting new skills.

We’re excited to start working with The Wallich, and proud to be supporting the incredible work they’re doing across Wales. One of their managers, Grant, recently shared a blog post with us, discussing the similarities between supporting people out of homelessness and climbing a mountain. Our Mid-layers explained

Designed primarily to trap air and reduce heat loss while still wicking away moisture, midlayers are a key part of the layering system. Wear them over a lightweight base layer and add a waterproof shell on top when the rain starts to fall. Choose from Merino wool, fleece or insulated and stay warm when the temperature drops.

Merino

Perfect for days spent on your feet, Merino wool is naturally antimicrobial and temperature regulating, keeping you cool and comfortable as you move. Plus, Merino fibres are much finer than regular wool, so it’s soft against your skin and we can style it into lighter and more versatile clothing.

Offering high levels of warmth in a lightweight garment, fleeces are a great mid-layer to throw on over a breathable base layer. Fleece fabrics are soft and cosy, comfortable on their own or an ideal inner lining when worn with a tougher, more protective outer fabric.

Youth Adventure Trust (YAT) share our passion for the great outdoors. We’re proud to partner with them, and to support the work they do, using the power of the outdoors to help vulnerable young people build resilience, develop confidence and learn valuable life skills.

Through their Youth Adventure Programme, YAT take groups of vulnerable young people on 3 residential trips and 8 activity days over 3 school years, starting with Mountain Camp in the Brecon Beacons.

Run for 6 days during the summer holiday between years 7 and 8, Mountain Camp is the first camp in the Youth Adventure Programme. Our Managing Director, Ian, and Marketing Director, Giles, recently took a trip to Call of the Wild in Abercrave, to see first-hand the power of this programme, and the incredible experiences had by YAT’s mountain campers.

From abseiling and caving to gorge walking and kayaking, these activities aren’t just about having fun in the great outdoors, they’re about teaching young people who are struggling that they can face any challenge that comes their way. The courage and determination that YAT volunteers help their participants to build are skills that can be taken into their everyday lives, to get them through difficult experiences at home or at school.

Whilst the guidance offered by YAT volunteers is absolute, it’s also subtle. No-one is called out for being nervous about climbing, or staying away from home; they’re supported through whatever they’re feeling and encouraged to keep going. The effectiveness of this intuitive support stood out to Ian and Giles:

moment is a learning opportunity, but the participants don’t know they’re learning – they’re climbing mountains and canoeing down rivers without realising that they’re also building resilience that’ll stay with them far beyond their week at Mountain Camp.”

Ian and Giles were blown away by the passion, skill and expertise shown by every volunteer they met at Mountain Camp – their hard work means that even if their circumstances stay the same, participants leave YAT’s Youth Adventure Programme with the life skills they need to cope with the challenges they’re so often faced with.
