Emory International Relations Association The Newsletter: Edition 3, Fall 2015
A Message From the Presidents Hello! My name is Camille Vinogradov and I am a senior in the college majoring in International Studies and French. This will be my second semester serving as President and I have been involved with EIRA/EMUN since my freshman year, and have been to over 5 conferences. I consider several of my mentors to be former presidents of EIRA, including Nicolette Kraska ‘13C and and Pritika Gupta ‘14C. I hope you take the time to read over this newsletter and learn about some exciting events that we’ve had in Atlanta, from World Week to MUNE III. In addition, we are currently ranked 14 th in the nation in terms of collegiate Model UN teams and we are hoping to break top ten this year. Model UN/EIRA has easily been the most influential activity that I’ve been involved with at Emory, and I know many of you feel likewise. Thank you so much for your continued support. Hi, my name is Jonathan Yu and I am a senior in the Goizueta Business School concentrating in Finance and Accounting with a minor in East Asian Studies. I was born in China but grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Model UN has been a part of my life since high school and I was overjoyed to be able to continue competing in college. EMUN/EIRA has been my defining college experience and I cannot in express in words what the club has meant to me.

Programming Spotlight From Marley MacDougall, Vice President of Programming: Chris Young This year, an important focus of EIRA expanding our programming in hopes of reaching a greater portion of the Emory community. In the Fall, we kicked off our programming with speaker Chris Young, Executive Director of CIFAL Atlanta and an Associated UNITAR fellow. Mr. Young has a close relationship with EIRA, which allowed for a stimulating discussion regarding the world of international relations and current events; the perfect setting of the stage for events to come.
World Week 2015 This year, World Week took place the week of October fifth, and played host to a vast array of events. The week kicked off with a political panel between the Young Democrats of Emory and the College Republicans, where they discussed the issues of foreign policy that each group felt would play a large role in the 2016 presidential elections. The next evening, the Canadian Consul General, Louise Blais, and Political and Economic Director, Ash Miller, joined us to discuss the complex relationship between Canada and the United States. After tabling at Wonderful Wednesday, where we raised diversity awareness by having students mark where they were from on a world map, we enjoyed a religious round table. The Hindu Student Association, Catholic Student Union, Emory Buddhist Club, Emory Hillel, Muslim Student Association, and the Baha’i of Metro Atlanta came together to discuss the effects of globalization on religion in the home country and abroad. We concluded the week the following evening with a film screening of the United Nations film “Beyond Right and Wrong” in conjunction with the Atlanta Chapter of the United Nations Association of America. Following the film, we enjoyed asking panelists, both from inside and outside of the Emory community, about their personal experience with genocide and their thoughts on the future of current international conflicts. World Week 2015 was an enlightening week of programming that played host to hundreds of students across the Emory community and demonstrated the growth of the relationship between EIRA and the greater community as a whole. We are looking forward to an evening of logic games with Blueprint LSAT Preparation in the coming weeks, as well as a community service project with Trees Atlanta to wrap up our semester.
MUNE IV From the Secretary General: MUNE, Model United Nations at Emory, has grown exponentially in the four years since its inception. This year, our main goal is to reach out to the MUN community and establish MUNE as a continuous presence in the Model UN circuit. Well known MUN schools like the University of Chicago team and McGill University have expressed interest in attending this year. We anticipate about 200 delegates participating, from schools all over the country reaching as far as the West Coast and Canada. With ten solid committees including a joint crisis committee, MUNE IV is geared up to be an exciting, competitive, and fun conference. The committees range in themes, dealing with topics like the Xi-Li Administration to the War of the Roses to the Hollywood Blacklist movement. Currently, we have over 70 eager staffers, ranging from new first years to senior veterans. Hopefully, this year will cement MUNE as a priority conference for many of the traveling teams on the MUN circuit. Sincerely, Fernanda Bernaldo de Quiros
