Claude Monet 1840-1926 Claude Monet was born in 1840 as a merchant’s son in Paris. 1843 his family moved with him to Le Havre. Even in his childhood he made drawings and cartoons. In 1856 he began his first training in a studio and he made the acquaintance of the plein-air painter E. Boudin, who influenced him early. He continued his studies in painting in 1859 in Paris, where he met Pissarro, Bazille, Sisley and Renoir. He got his first public success in 1865; but he was rejected by the Salon de Paris in 1869. 1870 Monet married his longtime partner Camille Doncieux, with her he had already a son. With the beginning of the Franco-German War 1871 he fled to London, where he was influenced by Turner and Constable.

During this time he met his future art dealer Durand-Ruel. With his help, he quickly got his own art exhibition. 1872 – 1877 he lived in Argenteul and Paris and founded together with Sisley, Pissarro and Renoir, the group “Société des Artistes Indépendants”. Based on Monet’s work “Impression, Sunrise” they were first known as Impressionists and ridiculed. Between 1874 and 1886, the painter organized eight common group exhibitions.During this time (1883) he moved to Giverny, where he lived until his death. The beautiful garden with lily ponds was a source of inspiration for his famous Water Lilies that were painted there since 1899. In 1886, he was allowed to participate in the World Exhibition in Paris. On December 6, 1926 Claude Monet died in Giverny.
