To whom it may concern,
Lisbon, 07 February 2012
In the period of internship (150 hours) of Rolando Volzone, we tried to work on a diversified process, both of thematic objectives and of definition of an intervention concept. The works were done on a real basis, because they corresponded to orders from our studio. These projects had diferent scales in various stages of the design, in order to provide a wide diversity of critical interventions. In addition to the technical/programatic formation/information, we tried to exercise, a diversified materic lexicon, both in terms of the project´s approach, the architectural composition and of the physical quality of the surfaces. The first project developed consisted in the recovery of an old rural construction, to transform it into a holiday home. With regard to the façades, a vernacular concern was followed, in order to integrate the building in the remaining rural complex. For this purpose we studied the existing windows, proposing its modular repetition in all the openings in the facades. With regard to the inner space, it was followed an intervention of intentional contemporary character, opposed to the outside of the building, in pursuit a “contemporary way” for its habitability. Rolando also carried out a study to implement a private housing complex, a condominium of 4houses, in the Cascais Atlantic Costline. In this study, always with an intentional use of models, we considered and studied the correct location on the plot, diferent spatial relationships between the proposed volumes/houses, regarding its implantation on the ground, the relationships of greater or lesser closeness between the different houses, always paying special attention to the movement of the sun and the visual relationship with the sea that its location provided. In all undertaken works models were carried out at various scales, in order guide the project, by opposing to the bidimensional resolution of the architectural language, in the manual and in the computerized drawing/design. These models made in different materials, always in accordance with the intentions of the project, and have always been an object of critical analysis in search of a defining gesture of the intervention, a concept, that almost included a demand for a sculptoric intervention. We always tried to “frame” the work on theoretical assumptions, whose examples were demonstrated in books and magazines provided by the studio, for relevant technical consulting. It should be noted, with pleasure, the commitment and dedication expressed by Rolando Volzone, in all the work done during his stay and even all the support given to the studio during that period.

WINE CULTURE CENTRE, CANTINA VALPOLICELLA NEGRAR VERONA FINALIST PLACE IN THE COMPETITION, by YAC The project takes form from the existing building, the winemaking tradition, the idea of the handwork... The focus is on this materiality and concreteness, the heaviness that here is reinterpreted and metaphorically and concretely eleveted in a massive block that hovers, as in the absence of gravity, like in Magritte space, over a horizon that is always visible. The celebration of the work and the traditions remain, however anchored to its roots and to the earth, into the ground.
doppelgÄnger, the theme of the double. Art.Architecture Workshop 2014, Lisbon
The aim of the Workshop is to explore the sensorial and emotional experience of moving through space and the contemplative nature of landscape. The subject of the design studio is to create a place of seclusion - a space of intimacy, reflection and silence for an individual within an urban context. Starting from the Memory of the church in the area, a space take place by a unice circular hole that goes into the depths of the soil. Everyone is invited to come down to this depth, through a path between two narrow walls, too narrow. In this immersion, the walls start to warm up more and more, to create a sense of loss, a split between the body and the material, which occurs in the presence of the fire that meets at the center of the room, a room without a roof. A space to reflect, to reconnect to the black part that everyone has inside.
ECO EXHIBIT- Ecological Exhibition Temporary Pavilion FIRST PLACE IN THE COMPETITION by GreenTrenDesign Factory, Rovereto Materiality is an important constituent of an architectural project : a materiality often full , heavy, protagonist. The structural design for the “Fiera di Bolzano” , stripped of this unbridled materialism : the architecture is reduced to a minimum , it loses its weight and its importance . What one reads is the trace , as to extract the DNA : a lightweight and flexible structure is formed by a modulus , produced by the superposition of two grids by the different thickness , minimal entities that give a three-dimensional emptied at these ephemeral walls . Temporary place of passage of light, people ... of time, in order to experience apparent and virtual effects that alter the ‘ singular ‘ perception of the “object ‘’ oscillating between “ the immateriality of the nature and the inexorable materiality of the ‘ architecture “( Ishigami ) . To reiterate this concept further , what stands out here are the “contents” , the protagonists remain two : the merchants and exhibition objects .

GREEN BOOKS PARK
Project of the “Park Green Books and a Pavilion for Reading
The project Green Books is sponsored by Publisher Rubbettino in collaboration with institutions , agencies , universities , Private, who publish with it . In Italy , almost 50 % of forest areas has been damaged due to air pollution , deforestation and fires , climate change , pest attacks . To recover the quality of woods and forests Italian is necessary to reconstruct the complexity of ecosystems . Each book or print publication has an environmental impact . The design has a symbolic value , but also concrete to reduce the environmental impact and ensure the health of the planet . With it Rubbettino is committed to planting a tree for every book published and ensure its growth . The trees will be part of the green park tree for children and book Soveria Mannelli city where the headquarters of the publisher. The park covers about 2 hectares . Located in a geographical area where the presence of trees permeates every corner of the landscape, giving it a sense of mystery that is typical of mountain forests , but also the comforting light of Mediterranean vegetation , is located within the club and the farm in pink glass. In addition to the pleasures of good food and good hospitality ensures visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and silence walks in the forest , environment outdoor sports , swimming and relax. The park offers a journey through the various tree species , picnic areas where you can immerse yourself in reading a book. In each tree are indicated by special labels and signs , as well as botanical characteristics , also references the dual axis book. Related to the global environmental crisis that science shows us periodically are very worrying and can worsen day by day . The impact that each human being and the machine manufacturing complex set in motion in the environment is unsustainable . It requires more effort to change the system of development that takes into account some of the atmosphere . In Italy , air pollution , climate change , pests , fires and deforestation are the main causes of the destruction of forests half Italian and therefore part of the biodiversity they contain. To overcome this problem , it is necessary to ensure that ecosystems can be rebuilt .
In the Hand of Co-housing
Project for the conversion of the village of Pentedattilo, Italy
Pentidattilo, built in a picturesque location in the hills overlooking the Ionian Sea, between Salinas and Melito Porto Salvo, province of Reggio Calabria. Now it is in a state of semi-abandoned: under the protection of the big rock, there are houses, many of which are uninhabited, stacked on each other in a series of roofs, stairs, windows and balconies, all interwoven with a dense vegetation. “Recovering the village, now abandoned, putting it back in its place. Each housing unit is a witness and testimony to a long history of thousands years; monument to a past that persists and that we want to feel. To this purpose, what occurs is not a process of reintegration of what was lost, that means almost deny a process of events, facts and events that marked the village. The operation seeks mainly chosen exaltation of these wounds, which give strength and identity to ruin. The old body of the building is treated almost like a relic. This relic however, is not placed inside a bell jar, but contains the radome itself in a reverse sense function. Treated as living space of experiences, the new box is independent and located within the old building, assuming their weight, their strengths and flaws, and filled the voids. A box that surrounds and protects the man, supporting and denouncing the profile of the past, therefore representing almost a backdrop. It is easy to see the contrast between the outer surface fragmentation that represents the old, the ancient, the past and the uniformity of compaction and inner box. Another unique feature of the place: on the one hand, suspended in a wait conditionon the other subjected to continual, even if no radical changes induced by the changing external conditions.
To the question if one could not work with additions, using the same material that was, the answer can only be negative. These are interventions that respond to specific requirements, totally new, without “roots in the original building. At the same time, it is important to emphasize that the remains were left intervened so as were found. In short, an intervention that stores and transmits to the public the full character of these historical and severe monuments.
Looking for the monolith
Rehabilitation of a rural house in the Tuscan countryside, Capalbio, Italy
The Tuscan countryside is the backdrop to the passage of time, the life that changes leaving a sign in memory. Here, two barns, symbols of time that has passed, creeping age and to have more space. This space, function of time, is filled with a third element found in the earth by man, which repositions and shapes to create new areas, new places. Pure geometric forms generate new places within life and time to live them. Natural elements, monolithic objects, write its own space in this rurality of the past.
Co-housing for nomadic communities
Transformation of the abandoned area of the “Parco delle Valli, Rome, Italy Nomadic peoples in perpetual movement, without a fixed home, without roots. From here develops and share this project: temporary accommodation for people who do not feel the need to fix, but are constantly traveling. There are two arms of this system that could develop and grow indefinitely, to embrace all continents, to call into question concepts of living. The exterior as the interior follows the rule of flexibility, only a few shells architectural appear safe in the earth, leaving the other free air, without the need for roots.
Tor di Nona: the icy tevere
Requalification of a Roman neighborhood between art and craft, Rome, Italy
On the banks of the Tevere, Tor di Nona, behind Castel Sant’Angelo, below the street level is almost drowned by the noise, the noise of the Roman daily life. Focus of intense artisanal activity, the district requires a reorganization and a connection to the Tevere. A river of ice, a crystallized transhipment of Tevere invades the neighborhood, creating a track that will guide the people of Rome in the middle of arts and crafts, for, at the end, to curl himself in an exhibition hall, temporary museum that promotes the area. A band that “freezes” these works of art, a track for Tor di Nona.
Nigredo: chocolate & wine The geometry of the place wants to be a direct reference to the sinuous and fascinating movements that sometimes, wine and chocolate adopt. This is the synthesis of a figurative set viewed by some as difficult, if not impossible ... A structure made of bands of red resin appears as the violent decomposition of a single element. The final effect seems a metaphor for the crushing process suffered by grape berry and the cocoa bean during the manufacturing of wine and chocolate. The focus on the production process and the various stages of refinement are also poured into the choice of materials: the roughness of the concrete is contrasted with the softness of resin finish. The use of jute fabric coating is as an explicit reference to an agriculture world and therefore, once again, a reference to earlier stages to the final product.
The Demiurge’s failure A critique to the work of the architect, the Demiurge, who sometimes ... fails. The project starts from the hypothesis of an error of the designer, who trying to manipulate matter, the earth, the clay, ends up losing control of his work. A block of clay sits inside an apartment, but the fate, the unexpected, causes its dissolution and spreads casually on the floor. The block contains two of the main functions of a house: the kitchen and the bathroom, water and fire.
Tristan ANd Isolde Project for the scenography of Richard Wagner, Opera Theatre of Rome, Italy Tristan and Isolde are unhappy protagonists, Richard Wagner weaves a dramatic story. On stage, the scenography shows only two players: the platform and the scenery. The two elements, as the two unhappy lovers are destined to destruction, the continuing disintegration of its parts, until disappearing at the end. The platform, eco of the ship that unites and divides the two youths, breaks up, falls, fades, until to vanish on stage, the stage of the theater, which is characterized mainly by sails light, making the story more dramatic.
Cinderella
Design and revalorization of a plastic chair Cinderella is the history of a plastic chair with a high expressive power, which unfortunately is often underestimated. A criticism of the contemporary society, the manners and customs, often contradictory. One way to surprise the hypothetical spectator who sees ahead a red velvetsymbol of nobility and power, and behind a plastic structure, that structure that is often required to be outside, subjected to weathering, to indifference.
Sella Crucis
Project of a bench for the church “Dives in Misericordia, Rome, Italy The white, the light, the sobriety. Few but intenses are the issues which underlie of this chair, designed for the Dives in Misericordia Church by the architect Richard Meier. The essence of space is ensured by building an object purged of any decoration, and at the same time iconographic sobriety is enriched by the own seat design. White is the protagonist in the overview, but it is here balanced by the composition of the planes, capable of generating small shadow areas, and by using a material like wood that will age and darken over time passively.
Lucis in fundo
Realization of a lamp on the topic of recycling Lucis in fundo is a light installation consisting of 300 funds for bottled water in PET. The scattered light through the plastic element makes the environment pleasant and sober. Able to excite and create the appropriate balance between the needs of light and shadow, joins economy product (made from waste), the possibility of customizing this subject through the choice of light or color of the funds of the bottles. Last but not least, freedom of shape and size. Visually attractive, not so much for its aesthetics, but because it is made entirely of recycled materials, the aim is revive what was thrown out, gathering objects of the same color, form or function.
CitySit: Take your time Just look around to realize the multitude of things that fill our daily lives . Millions of objects that saturate the space and also the time that runs , subject to things. Created things , many, many more , often new things , to deny the past , and still other things will be created, which surround us . Items similar and yet different from each other in a common idea found “ horror vacui “ , which for most of this time is not the time to be admired . Create a design object , then, meant to create another object, whose destiny is getting confused between all those that are rampant in the streets , in homes, to insert an object into a cyborg world , “ where there are a million implants invented for man , and men have become prosthesis system that uses blind man as a prosthesis “ ( Enzo Mari ) . It is from these considerations is born the idea of not thinking a “object “ , but a “moment “ , a fragment of space where time to also: a place to pull off the routine of our day , where man can only be prostheses and look at things . Paused to sip some tea reveals a vibrant metropolis and finally allows to see the obviousness of the world , which usually escapes us lost in the fleeting nature of time .
Sonus Loci It is 1913 when Luigi Russolo published “ The Art of Noise ,” a brilliant futurist manifesto : the idea of music is reinterpreted in a completely new , consisting of sounds , but also noise , nowadays the background of human existence . But the noise , in fact , is nothing more than a sound, the sound that the city produces . An ambulance , noise , screams , a ball , the laughter of two friends , the door of a house , a car crossing the city , the trumpeter who entertains passersby . All of these sound effects recreate a chaotic environment and warm at the same time. The noise is the city , the testimony of his being alive, and the rhythms inherent in this life do not recognize everything: he will absentmindedly about the noises and sounds of a city that speaks , speaks for us . So why not listen to it ? This resulted in a project aimed at raising awareness by transforming a waste product of technological society , the noise precisely , in a work accessible. Operation of encounter and exchange between contemporary art , sound and environmental themes , a meditation on soundscape and the auditory dimension of human experience , both aesthetically and socially. The installation invites the viewer to “ snoop around “ everyday life . The intuition is simple . Life is full of sound and the city is full of life. We passed through its streets . Look up carefully . Sharpen your hearing through a single large ear . We pay due attention to the sounds of which we are accustomed .
