It is wonderful to see the groups back into full swing. While numbers are back to pre-COVID normal, I did notice Indoor Bowls numbers were a little light on this week. Perhaps the cool weather took its toll. With that said a bit of activity will help to warm up and being able to have a chat and a giggle also warms the heart. Social distancing still remains in place along with the tracing sign in forms and the need to sanitise your hands. There are an array of activities available during the month including: Bingo, Craft, Board Games, you can join the Lions, Elevate for the Youth in the district, Playgroup for the littlies, not 1 but 2 Art Shows, the Social Fishing and Boating BBQ’s and the Seniors Plant Display. All that but also including the Mobile library, the Vet, Exercise Classes and Mass when the Catholic Church chooses to return. For Social outings or appointments in Town there is the Rollingstone Bus on Thursdays. Who said there was nothing to do in Rollingstone/Balgal Beach. A huge thanks to Alec and Angie for trimming the trees around the RTC and the Book Station, I left on Friday afternoon and came back on Monday and the place had been transformed with neatly trimmed shrubs all around the Centre. It is almost like having our own hard working pixies at the bottom of the garden. We have other volunteers coming and doing good works over the weekends. Steve mows and whippersnips, Kerrie and Barb, the girls who fold and the others who deliver the Rolly Rag, the girls who run the Op Shop on the 1st Sat of each month, often spending many hours at their tasks over the weekend. Children’s Art Exhibition. You, our Community are invited to the Children’s Art Exhibition, 15 August from 9am to 12.30pm. The artworks on display are a culmination of three painting workshops held in July, by members of the Rollingstone Art Community. These Art Workshops have been presented by the Rollingstone Art Community and our thanks go out to Rosa Christian, Ann Martin, Sue Thompson and their helpers: Di, Pam and Santoria (Another group of Volunteers toiling away at the Centre on the weekends). The children have been extremely committed to their craft and are getting as much enjoyment developing their paintings as we are watching the artworks develop. Well done everyone. The Artists@Rollingstone Team are also presenting an Art Exhibition in September. Opening night is 11 September with the exhibition remaining open for Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will see a Carboot Sale be held on Pace Park with Dan and Mon’s lovely coffees and the Lions holding a Sausage Sizzle. Maybe the children from the Art Workshops would like to come along and see the artworks their teachers achieve. Jody from Notch Playgroup was wrapped this afternoon when she let us know she had the biggest ever group of children at the Rollingstone Playgroup this week. Jody imparted this info to me while wearing a lovely fluro green tutu with her smile matching its brightness. Rollingstone Mums and pre-schoolers, Jody was very happy indeed. Welcome back to the regular playgroup families and welcome to the new families. The Seniors’ are back into the event saddle with their Plant Display being held at the Community Centre on Saturday 5 September. There will be morning tea available, plant stalls, pottery and craft stalls to browse. There is a People’s Choice award for the best cut flower arrangement and the best potted plant display. Get your creative thinking caps on and enter the comps. For further information please contact Wendy Clark on 0418654242 or Deb on 47707474. We have already thanked Brett and Bec (NQ Concreting and Bobcat Hire) and mates for their wonderful work on the Railway Display. We thank you again, Brett and Bec. Your generosity to the Community and to the Association is ever so much appreciated…….Thank you. Elevate Youth Group being organised by Chappy Travis is meeting on a fortnightly basis and is sharing their time between the Rollingstone Community Centre and Bluewater Community Centre. 1 August will see Elevate in Bluewater. Elevate welcomes young people of High School age living in the Northern Beaches areas. The Community Association’s AGM is being held on Thursday 17 September 7.30pm at the Community Hall. All members are invited to attend. Membership forms are available at the RTC and the nominal fee of $1 per year is payable at the RTC. The Management Committee nomination form is included in this issue. Rollingstone Rag, August 2020

This past month saw the passing of David Reedman. David lived in Bluewater but serviced Rollingstone, Toomulla and Mutarnee as our local electrician. He was a fine tradesman and a genuinely nice bloke and we will miss him sorely. Thinking of his wife and family at this sad time…….Vale David. Betty Coleman and Eddie Rouse (both from Toomulla) have had stints in hospital and Betty has now moved in to a Nursing Home in town. Both, however, have improved. David Gurr (Bluewater, but a member up here) has had several skin cancers removed and subsequently some skin grafting performed. He’s doing well. Jan Giles, Rhonda Gurd and Bryan Reinke are not so good. All are receiving treatment for ongoing conditions, so we send our love and best wishes and pray for better health for them as soon as possible. •

Please don’t abuse our Committee or Volunteers because you don’t like the re-vamped Rag. Just come along and join our team, and make a difference by helping. You might even create the changes you so desire. Otherwise, send a letter to the Management Committee and we’ll deal with it officially. Our volunteers, particularly, shouldn’t be subjected to that kind of treatment – and neither should the Committee, for that matter. We’re all doing a job happily with no remuneration so really don’t deserve to be on the receiving end of that sort of conduct. Brett and Bec Logan (NQ Concreting and Bob Cat Hire) have been overly-kind to us and a donation towards our Railway Display has made life so much financially easier for us. Their generosity is appreciated like you wouldn’t believe and we’re just so grateful to them. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Brett & Bec. This is a little out of left field, but it just occurred to me that the community may be unaware - but I think they should know - we have a small shed at the Centre containing a whole lot of sporting equipment which could be used for our kids for all sorts of (sporting and entertainment) activities. Should you like to use some of this equipment but would like to have a look first, please contact Chris or Mark at the RTC (855) to make arrangements to do so; and if you’d like to borrow anything, that would be okay as well, but it must be done at the Community Centre grounds/oval. The “Farewell” Morning Tea for two (2) of our local residents was a happy/sad couple of hours with many older faces in attendance. So good to see! It’s a fact of life living here, that eventually one must move on and this has happened to these long-time residents. They’ll be sorely missed but given that they’re only moving to Townsville, they’ll still be accessible to friends and able to join us when occasions occur. We’ve set the date for our AGM as Thursday, Septr. 3rd @ 7.30pm. Please make the effort to come along and either stand for Committee or have your say about what you perceive we’re doing wrongly/badly. Recently a badly neglected, malnourished and maltreated horse paddocked locally was reported to the RSPCA. That animal has since been rescued by a local lady and is being given lots of TLC and life-giving and health-restoring treatment. She has taken on all those expenses personally (and they’ve been considerable), so she is to be roundly commended for her compassionate actions. Vets has been up to check the mare and she has had treatment and given medication; and the RSPCA have been up to visit. The mare is improving daily. We would like to suggest that if you would like to donate a small amount to help this lady financially with these initial expenses, we will add something thereto and get it to her. The Kids’ Painting Workshops are proving to be a success with really good attendances. Looking forward to seeing the results at the Kids’ Art Expo/Exhibition/Competition on Saturday, August 15th. Hope to see you there………..would be great support for the youngsters.
Cooking-for-a-Crowd Tip: Eggs on cookie sheet (mine is non stick but I also smeared some butter on it just in case), baked at 220C for about 8 minutes. PERFECT runny eggs for a crowd! “We have a once in a century opportunity to re-set our economic priorities.” (Bernard Salt) (I wonder if our national brains-trust will take that opportunity? Unfortunately, they have a tendency to fail pretty regularly – Contb.) Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

How quickly time is passing – or so it seems. Already, we are entering the last month of Winter and before we know it, Christmas will be upon us. In January, when the dreaded virus interrupted our lives, we expected it to have run its course by mid- year; that seemed so far ahead. Now, we wait patiently for whatever the next six months will bring. I would like to be an optimist and hope that 2021 will see Covid 19 well behind us. In June, a controlled burn was conducted on the lower slopes of the Range. Controlled burns are carried out each year in rotation, in a patchwork pattern so that it may be two years, or even three, before a particular area is burnt again. The optimum time for these burns is in a narrow window between June and August before the weather becomes too hot and windy. A few days after the recent controlled burn an unauthorised fire was lit in National Park land at the foot of the Range. Ironically, this area was designated for a controlled burn that same week. Len Cook and Barry Smith joined Girringun Rangers to fight the fire, working late into the evening. While most of the days here over the Winter months have been relatively mild, some of the nights have been close to freezing. Definitely, a roaring wood fire is a great pleasure and comfort. Len Cook issued a reminder to check the flues of our fires and wood-stoves, as in the past there have been some alarming, but thankfully not disastrous fires in chimneys due to build-up of soot. He also urged familiarising ourselves where fire hydrants are located. These are indicated by a blue reflector in the middle of the road and at the roadside, a small concrete grave-like stone marked FH. During the last weekend in July, Sam Stedman, of Outer Limits, conducted a Wilderness First Aid course. The three-day course was designed to teach people emergency and first aid procedures when out in the bush and away from regular medical and emergency help. The Paluma Push, traditionally held in late July, has been moved to 11th October. As usual, local volunteers will be at checkpoints to record cyclists and assist with any first aid necessary. Volunteers also are essential as traffic marshals as Paluma’s streets are parked out to the limit on race day. There will also be Trail Bike races on 1st November. While on the subject of traffic: Since travel restrictions have been lifted there has been a marked increase in visitors to Paluma and we welcome the many birdwatchers, picnickers, school children attending the Environmental Schools, and others who come here to enjoy Paluma’s peace and beauty. Unfortunately, many drivers do not observe the 40 kph speed limit and many vehicles hurtle through the village at speeds well above 70. This is of great concern because as there are no footpaths, pedestrians walk on the road which in places is very narrow. Remember our website www.paluma.org Keep safe, keep well…..Colwyn Campbell

G,Day All, Well time for another newsletter. Our AGM will be held on Sunday 9th Aug. at the hall on BBQ night commencing at 5.30 pm. Memberships must be paid on the night or before to be eligible to vote. Think about the people you would like to see on the committee. We need new faces with new ideas. Nominations will be taken from the floor on the night. Because of the Corona Virus issues and not being able to function as a club we have decided to reduce Membership fees to $10 per person, for the coming year. Due to family health problems, our much loved Faye Thompson will not be standing this year. After so many years as our President she will be sadly missed. She has done a faultless job for us. Have a good think about who you would nominate for this position. SHIRLEY Cattle won the Lucky Membership draw this month…. GOOD ON YA SHIRL.
Every one reports the new boat ramp is great and makes launching easier. We just need the weather to be a bit more co-operative. Well hello everyone. So exciting to see some/more Covid-19 restrictions being lifted. How good is it to see a regular supply of toilet paper back on the shelves. For how long you ask? One of our long standing, most caring & friendly residents: Betty Coleman, made the decision to move into PresCare Aged Care Home and she is loving it!! She has a magnificent view of the mountains from her room, has made lots of friends already, going to crochet & craft sessions, soft chair exercises and most importantly Betty has 24 hour care. Betty along with her husband Alf who sadly passed away in 2017, have lived in the community for a very long time, close to 40 years! Whilst she misses Toomulla, Betty is certainly enjoying her new lifestyle! I am happy to pass on Betty’s new phone number for anyone wanting to catch up with her for a chat. You can email me schwarzee1959@gmail.com or phone 47707813. For those wanting to go and visit Betty, please remember to take your Flu Vaccination Certificate along for entry to the home. How exciting for the Toomulla Community, the surveyor has been out and the first peg has been placed in the ground!! After working many hours with the Townsville City Council, Cr Margie Ryder & Community & Development Officer Helene James, the Toomulla Beach Community Association has secured a Lease on a parcel of land in Toomulla park to build our Multi Purpose Community Shelter Shed. Along with the Lease, we have also secured a grant for $44,000 through Funding received under the FNQ & NQ Monsoon Trough – Category C. The Shelter, when constructed, will enable Toomulla Beach permanent residents, broader northern beaches residents, tourist & day visitors, a communal gathering place for sharing, storytelling & community functions. The Shelter will enable our Community to hold education sessions and initiatives, which build an informed, involved, safe and resilient Community. After 9 years of fundraising and planning, to receive the grant is just a huge bonus for the Community. We are looking forward to working with everyone involved with this exciting & wonderful project for the community. Now that the social distancing rules have relaxed slightly we can hold our yearly AGM for the Toomulla Beach Community Association Inc. The meeting will be held on Saturday 29th August at Toomulla Park, commencing @ 3.30pm followed by a BBQ. The Fishing Club will also hold their AGM at 3pm. Please come along and also maybe consider becoming a Committee member. Working for & giving back to your Community gives such a wonderful sense of achievement in life!! Very rewarding. Lucky Numbers is starting up again. Some people have already paid previously, but due to the Covid we had to put everything on hold. I will email those who have paid and also your chosen Lucky Number/s. Good Luck and the first draw will be on Saturday 29th August at the AGM. The community Defibrillator has been moved. You can now access it for emergencies from the side of the Book Stall. It is in the silver box. Unfortunately we were unable to have our free Mothers Day Giveaway this year & now Fathers Day is coming up in September. So we have decided to still go ahead with both giveaways. You will receive an entry to both giveaways in your mailbox during August, so please remember to fill them both in and return to the Community Mailbox on the corner of Herald & TB Road next to the community noticeboard. Good Luck. Eddie Rouse had a ride in the Ambulance recently with a health scare but he is all good now, back pruning his hedges and attending to his plants. He has also had quite a few sunspots cut out but recovering very well from this & the best was that there are no nasty ones! Sue Duvel also is unwell and making regular trips to hospital. Husband George & her beautiful boys along with their families are taking good care of Sue making her as comfortable as possible whilst she is unwell. School holidays saw the kids out fishing regularly with some good catches. Jace Jennings along with our grandson Jayden caught their first Barra, even though they had to give them a kiss and let them go! Keep going boys…the big one is coming! Great to see the kids out & about in the community & so keen to fish. Welcome to all the new families that have moved into the Community. Wonderful to see more kids here. Our kids Christmas party should be a big one this year. With the increase of children in the Community & along with the people who enjoy walking, please remember that the speed limit in and around Toomulla is 50 kms especially along Herald Street. Please slow down!! Thank you to those residents who abide by the speed limit. Thank you to all those wonderful residents who help deliver the Rolly Rag each month. Very grateful for your help. Do you have any news or items of interest that you would like to be added into the monthly newsletter? Please send your contributions to schwarzee1959@gmail.com to be considered for the newsletter. Photos are also welcomed. Cheers…..Rhonda. Rollingstone Rag, August 2020

STREETS SHOULD BE SAFE FOR STUDENTS Last month, Members of the Balgal Beach Community, held a morning walk to highlight the pedestrian safety issues facing local children during their morning walk to the school bus stop. The Community has highlighted the lack of safe access and lighting for school students walking along Balgal Beach Road, Armidale Avenue, Acheron Drive and Mystic Avenue. This is certainly a risk during those early, dark winter mornings and I can appreciate why parents would be concerned. While I was unable to attend the walk due to being in parliament, I had already arranged to hold a meeting with local Councillor Margie Ryder and residents on July 21 to listen to their suggestions for improvements. A proposal such as this would need the budgetary support of the Townsville City Council and perhaps a grant application to the State Government for Works for Queensland funding. I look forward to working closely with Cr Ryder in the coming months to progress this issue and see what avenues are available to unlock funds. I would also like to thank those residents who have already contacted my office. No matter how big or small the issue, the safety of local residents is always my top priority and as your local State MP, I welcome the opportunity to assist in any way I can. On a related note, any resident who is vision-impaired will now be able to apply for a disability parking permit for the vehicle they are travelling in from August 31. This follows a sustained effort by some very determined Hinchinbrook families, Guide Dogs Queensland and Katter’s Australian Party to get these changes across the line from the State Government. It is long overdue and I know it will make life for the vision-impaired that little bit easier when navigating a busy shopping Office of Nick Dametto MP centre or building carpark. Hi! this July has been a bad month for Wallabies being hit by cars. In just two days we had call outs for five that had been hit. Two were mothers, unfortunately one of the babies was dead as the call out came too late, the other mother had only just been hit when found by a couple out walking. They rang me to report the Wallaby and when I arrived there I found that the Wallaby was a female with a baby Joey and it was alive and kicking but unfortunately mum was dead. Today the Joey is going strong and her name is Danni. I realise they are silly animals that jump out from nowhere onto the road and sometimes you can’t miss them. If this happens and you do hit one and for some reason you can’t stop, please ring Gaye or myself and we will come and check for you. If you do stop to check please pull the animal off the road and if it is a female and you think she has a baby, you don’t have to touch it if you choose not to, call Gaye or myself and we will come and check. If you hit one and you know it’s not dead, please don’t just keep driving and leave the animal on the road to suffer a long agonising death or worse get run over by another vehicle. Take it of the road and call us and Gaye will euthanise the animal humanly. If you do not have our numbers ring the wild life number and they will contact us. You will find this in the back of the Rolly Rag. See you in the great outdoors…..Chris.

Hello to Rolly Rag Readers. What a great time of the year to start your planning for clean ups – this is a really important necessity for all people living in NQ with the up coming cyclone and fire season. Any bits of debris which may become airborne and harm neighbours properties should be rectified now. Likewise if you have any build up of fuel for fire in your yards, please get onto those now. COVID 19 continues to be a scourge to our southern neighbours. Whilst we are fortunate here for now please continue to practice your new normal – minimise contact and maintaining social distancing. Your health may depend on these very simple things. Again, if you have anything requiring police attention please follow the next few steps. 1 – Urgent matters – ring 000 immediately and explain the issue. 2 – Non urgent matters – please contact police link who will direct me as required. DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important, to stop more bites or others being bitten and wastes time. In hospital do not panic if you do not know which snake bit you. Tell the hospital however if you do know what snake the bite came from. A new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, (below) so it doesn’t matter what snake bit the patient. Read that again- one injection for all snakes! Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins. 3000 bites are reported annually. 300-500 hospitalisations 2-3 deaths annually. Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish. While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season. Let’s start with a Basic overview. There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously) Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans. All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood). This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site. It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream). Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood. Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc. Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck. Back to the snake bite site. When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues). The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten. Stay still!!! Venom can’t move if the victim doesn’t move. Stay still!! Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream. In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further retard venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream. A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (don’t wash the area). Technique: Three steps: keep them still Step 1 Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite. Step 2: Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin. The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage. Step 3: Splint the limb so the patient can’t walk or bend the limb. Do nots: Do not cut, incise or suck the venom. Do not EVER use a tourniquet Don’t remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing. Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement. Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees. Bleeding - internally and bruising. Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing. Pain. In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound. Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice. Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom.

The below article was provided by Warren Butterworth. Ladies and Gentlemen, for those who have recently moved into the Rollingstone/Balgal Beach Area, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Warren BUTTERWORTH and I have been a resident of Balgal Beach since 2001. Prior to taking up residence here, I was a member of the Queensland Police Force/Service for 35 years. I was a Uniformed Officer my whole career, (24 years as Officer in Charge of Police Stations in North Queensland, where I enforce the Offence committed under the “Traffic Act & Regulations” and in the later years the “Transport Operations Road Use Management Act & the Transport Operations Road Use Management Road Rules 2019. I was also involved in the investigation of thousands Traffic Accidents, later known at Traffic Incidents as the greater majority were not caused by accident, but because of driver’s not obeying the Road Rules. (Later I was appointed to the position in the QPS (Regional Traffic Co-Ordinator for the Northern Police Region which included the area bounded by the Bowen Division to the south, the Ingham Division to the north and the Northern Territory Border to the west) and I held this position when the new “National Road Rules” were introduced in this State and I had to attend numerous Conferences/Workshops in Brisbane to familiarize myself of the new Transport Operations Act (Road Use Act) and the Transport Operations Road Use Management Act. Part of my role in this Position was to monitor all Traffic Incidents that occurred and Traffic Enforcements within the Region and I had to prepare these statistics for my Assistant Commissioner, together with recommended Traffic Enforcement to address the Traffic Incidents (a near impossible thing to do, but we did show some decline in incidents). In the past, I have published Information Reports in the Rolly Rag to better explain what the Road Rules actually mean. I know from personal experience that young people who have just obtain their Provisional License know what the Road Rules say, but they do not really understand what they mean and when I drive around our area and on the Highway. When I first joined the police, when we investigated, what was then “Traffic Accidents”, a copy of every “Traffic Accident Report” was forwarded to the Department of Transport, where statistics on all Traffic Accidents were maintain. Many years after I joined, these reports were changed to “Traffic Incidents Reports” as the statistics indicated that over 80% of all traffic accidents/incidents were caused by the driver committing a breach (or breaches) of the Traffic Act and Regulations, which could have been avoided if the driver had been obeying the laws. Throughout my career, I found that the majority of driver’s were far over confident when it comes to their driving ability and it was never their fault, it was the other person or they’d try and blame the road surface or road design. An example is when I was stationed at Julia Creek, many accidents were caused by fatigue because the drivers were in a hurry to get to their destination and the ignored to signs of fatigue. These incidents included drivers leaving the sealed surface not apparent reason. However, on this occasion I intend to talk about “ATTITUDE”. During my career, it became very obvious that every generation of drivers are far too over confident when they get behind the steering wheel of a car, or on a motorcycle or bicycle. The majority have the belief that they are an experienced driver/rider and know what is required the Road Rules, but when they are involved when they collided with livestock (kangaroos, Emus, sheep, wild pigs, cattle, horses etc. and they had never driven on the road before and were not aware of the dangers and they were driving without “Due Care and Attention” and were breached. We also had situations where the driver lost control of his vehicle allegedly doing 100km/h in black soil country where the road sinks in areas and when they came to a Grid that was higher than the road, they’d become airborne and lose control of their vehicle. I had at least two incidents where the driver alleged that they were doing no more than the speed limit (100km/h) when one of the back tyres blew out and they lost control of the vehicle and rolled numerous times. You never know when this can happen. When you are driving on the road when it is raining or the road is wet, you MUST realise that your “Braking Distance” increases, so for your sake, and the safety of other road users, you drive below the speed limit so that you have sufficient time to stop before colliding with another vehicle or thing. These incidents were caused by the drivers “Not driving with Due Care and Attention. Remember the Speed Limits are the MAXIMUM speed a which you can travel on that road. IT DOES NOT SAY (anywhere in the legislation) Athat you must travel at the limit. Finally, I would like to address the parents of children and teenagers Bliving in the area. I am alarmed at the number of young people that I see riding bicycle around the street when they are not wearing Bicycle helmets. I am also aware that there a few drivers in the area who leave a lot to desired when it comes to driving on our roads. They know two speeds, “Stop” and “Put the foot to the metal” even though we have tourist using our narrow roads. If at anytime you have a query about the Road Rules, please do not hesitate to email your question to woppercopper@hotmail.com or phone me on 0428752575 as I have copies of both the Act and Regulations downloaded on my Desktop.
