SOMETHING of WHAT’S HAPPENING at the 2022 PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL This year, we’re once again “doin” the Pineapple Festival! Much has occurred and much has changed over the past 2 years, so it’s a l-o-n-g road back. We’ve a new Management Committee, and some other new admin-type innovations, so we’re desperate that it should all work for us AND the public. We’ve dropped a few things and, in their place, we’re trying others; we’re keeping it simple with an emphasis on catering for all ages to make it a Happy Day Out for all attending. So, from the kids’ point of view……… 1. We have a Theme this year for the first time for the Festival – “Pineapple Pirates” – the idea of a theme was requested by numerous local community members. 2. We’re not doing the Parade. However, straight after the Opening and Harvest Blessing, we’ll be having a Kids’ Fancy Dress Parade (Prep – Gr. 3 and Gr.4 – Gr.6) followed by the Cutest Pineapple Pirate Baby Contest (0-2; 3-4).
3. Kids’ Korner will again be operative with a Pirate Jumping Castle, a RockClimbing Wall, Face Painting & Balloon Art, the Lions Slip ‘n’ Slide; a Treasure Hunt; races and other field events, and carnival food, of course. 4. And we are retaining the ColouringIn Competition for the 3 x Schools’ participation and involvement that we’ve always had. 5. And, we’re presently working on something for the teenage group but that is yet to be finalised.
We’re hoping all the above will occupy the younger members of the community. For the next 2 months until the Festival (in September), we’ll tell you more about what we’re offering. There really is much more, but we wanted to let you know what was in store for the kids. So, see you in July. Saturday 10th September

KAP issues road demands as Woolcock Street grinds to a halt Recently, in the Queensland Parliament, I called on the Queensland Government and Townsville City Council to collaborate and commit to fast-tracking upgrades to Woolcock Street, which is Townsville’s busiest road. Communities such as Deeragun, Mount Low, Bushland Beach, North Shore and Burdell are growing at exponential rates, and the peak hour traffic situation on Woolcock Street, where gridlock is common, is unacceptable and unsustainable. Unfortunately, the main road that commuters use to access the city is at full capacity. This road was previously part of the Bruce Highway but, since Ring Road Stages 4 and 5 were completed, it is no longer part of the Bruce Highway and, therefore, does not qualify for 80 per cent of Federal funding for upgrades. The Department of Transport and Main Roads and the local Council needed to fast-track a holistic
Rollingstone Rag, June 2022
solution to the North Townsville traffic situation. This must include expanding Woolcock Street, raising the lower Bohle River bridge, and a flyover or improvements to the North Shore Boulevard and Shaw Road intersection. Unfortunately, any traffic disruption along Woolcock Street or the adjacent streets results in one-and-a-half to two-hour wait times to get into town. This only results in frustrations for road users as they are late for work, school, medical appointments, or other commitments. I believe that the Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, Townsville MP Scott Stewart, Townsville City Council Mayor Jenny Hill and myself need to work collaboratively to fast-track important infrastructure upgrades to this neglected road network. Rollingstone State School We should be using audible! Dear Mrs B What did the dog say to the other dog in the morning? Woof Morning! Sounds much better when you can listen to it. Reading is boring with paper books and we should start listening to audible books because you can listen to it while someone is reading it for you. Paper books are thousands of years old and we shouldn’t be reading those, we should be listening to something more interesting, we should be listening to Audible! Normal books don’t have much entertainment where as audible books has expressive readers who make it more interesting. You can listen to thousands of books on your device, so why aren’t we using Audible? We should be getting rid of paper books and a get a new experience by listening to audio books. That’s why I think we should be listening to Audible rather than just reading normal old books. The other reason why we should be listening to Audible is that you can just listen to your book, while you’re relaxing and it’s so much better than dropping your old paper book on your face because you nod off when reading. You can listen to your audio book while you take a nice walk down the street, instead of flipping pages over and over again. You can listen to Audible on your iPad or phone anytime and anywhere. When someone reads it to you it has more excitement, but when you read it on paper it doesn’t have much excitement, that’s why we should be using audible! Cooper :) NO MORE AUDIO Thursday 12 May Dear Miss B, Do you really want us learning nothing, so nobody can understand us. We must not have Audible because it is not considered reading. We need to delete Audible from our iPads because kids need to learn how to read. Are we just meant to listen to things for our whole life? We should have handmade books because audible books are not considered reading. For instance, when you listen to Audible, it pronounces the words to the book so quickly that when there is a hard word, poof, you are passed it and never learn how to pronounce or use that word. Traditional books allow you to read and when there is a difficult word, you can look for the word in the dictionary and then use that word. Reading books is how you build your vocabulary and build your knowledge. Someone told me that audible books are great because it pronounces the words correctly. Yes it does pronounce the words correctly but can you? It will say the word but you won’t know what it means, you won’t use it in your writing or conversation. When reading a book you can stop anytime and look at the meaning and context. We must delete audible books and go to our handmade books. Reading sets the scene, builds your imagination and mood and most importantly, you become a confident reader. Blaze Rollingstone Rag, June 2022
Now that all students have an iPad at school, students are able to utilise an online library. One of the students found the audio book section which has sparked a lot of interest with the students. They were asked to write an opinion about whether they should be allowed to use audio books for silent reading and as reading books for school. Listening to Audible Books Must Be Allowed! Dear Mrs B, Did you know listening to audio books is better for your comprehension and vocabulary? I believe we should most definitely be allowed to listen to audio books in our silent reading time. We are new age learners! Audio books are a huge improvement on print books because it allows all children to have access to stories, even those that can’t read well. Also if you are having trouble reading long books, then audio books will be a great solution for you because they will read any books to you. We are always needing to have great vocabulary in our written tasks so audio books are perfect! We listen to a book, all words are pronounced correctly, and this instantly translates to allowing us the opportunity to use these words. When we read boring, paper books, we tend to skim read and any words that are difficult, we simply skip. Furthermore, audio books are a huge life saver for children and adults that want to read long books but they can’t. If you are having troubles reading long books, well don’t worry because audio books are here to help! They are read with expression, create mood and all of a sudden the story comes to life and your imagination runs wild. If you are reading a book, especially if you are a struggling reader, your time and concentration is spent on decoding and not enjoying the story. With an audio book, children of any age can enjoy whatever book they want; hard books, complex books, long books any books! Mrs B you need to agree with me, that audible books are a much better choice for silent reading than print books! Audible books will expand our vocab, bring back the enjoyment of stories and open a whole new world of endless knowledge and enjoyment. You must let us use audible books during silent reading!!!! Emily

Keep opening night, Friday 15th July free — write it in your calendar now. If you can’t make it to that celebration, then LUCKY YOU, we are open all day Saturday the 16th July alongside the Boot Sale, but closing later at 3pm as usual. And again, on Sunday 17th until 3pm. If you are a new artist to the district, or simply wondering if you’re good enough, you are and you’re very welcome. Come and join our team. As you can imagine we are gearing up for that event, but we will not be neglecting you, our community. There will be another Bubbles and Brushes between now and then, 9th June. You will have the choice of either
following the painting presented or choosing your own subject in anticipation of hanging it at the Exhibition. There will, of course, be artists present to help you out. We also intend having a table at the Balgal Beach Market in June and the following months, and will make our presence felt at the Pineapple Festival in September. For further information contact Ann Martin 0408100083 or Rosa Christian 0439672906. Cheers from the A@RTeam.

Hi Folks, I am filling in for Ken this month so hopefully this article will be short and sweet. We celebrated Mothers’ Day with a luncheon at the Bushland Beach Hotel instead of our normal BBQ at the Hall. We had 11 members plus 3 visitors. Our next BBQ on 12th June will be a Brunch by the Sea. We will be meeting in the park at Fisherman’s Landing and we are having a Breakfast/Lunch (Brunch) starting at 10am. We will be inviting previous members who have been the backbone/workers of our club. Requirements for the day is for all members to turn up with their own plates, cutlery and maybe a chair or two. Everything else will be provided. Can you please ring Kerrie on 0412 492 861 or Linda 0499 343 573 for catering purposes. We are planning to have a couple of days away out to Bivouac Junction in July hopefully. There are cabins for hire and also camping and caravan sites as well, depending on which you prefer. We will have more information regarding costs etc. at our next BBQ.

Rollingstone & District Lions Club Our Lions Club is excited to share a good news story. We are sponsoring an Australian Lions Hearing Dog named ‘Mawson’ in the Northern suburbs of Townsville. We will be making regular visits to the recipient for 12 weeks to see that all is running smoothly. Australian Lions Hearing Dogs is a project of Lions Australia, started 42 years ago when two Lions visiting the USA became aware of the project and successfully introduced it to Australia. The concept is to train a young dog that shows promise, through a series of tests and training to recognise sounds to alert the attention of a deaf
person. This includes the door bell, kettle, alarm clock, phone and most importantly, the smoke detector. For many years young dogs were purchased from dog Rescue Centres or donated or purchased from Breeders at a favourable cost and trained at our facility in South Australia. Of recent times ALHD have introduced their own breeding program to keep up with the ever-increasing demand. ‘Mawson’, a Tenterfield terrier, like all the dogs from our centre in the Adelaide Hills, cost $37000 to train to the required standard. With the generous support of Lions Clubs across Australia and a $2000 donation from the sponsoring Lions Club to fund the trainer and dog, they are able to fly anywhere in Australia and spend a week with the recipient and the local sponsoring Club to ensure the transisition s successful.
MAWSON
The next meeting of the Grief and Loss Support group will be held on Thursday 9th June at 2pm at the Community Hall. All welcome. Please bring some afternoon tea to share. Contact Suzi Vincent on: 0409 880 902 for further information. Rollingstone Rag, June 2022
This project would not exist without the generous support of Lions Clubs and Friends of Lions Clubs throughout Australia with a demand that is ever increasing, allowing recipients to lead an independent life style, often allowing them to do meaningful jobs and contributing to their communities. Australian Lions Hearing Dogs is one of five Specialist Assistance Dog Training Organisations that is recognised Internationally and has just received the final processes of accreditation to train medical alert dogs for young people with type 1 Diabetes; This will be a whole new arm of ALHD. If you would like to know more about ALHD visit our web site at www.lionshearingdog.com.au or ph. me on 0414808483 John Holliday- District Chair of ALHD 19

Hello Rag Readers, In the last few weeks there have been significant increases in property crime in the Balgal Beach areas. Targeted burglaries of victim’s homes and motor vehicles in the hours of darkness. Vehicles, car keys, wallets, phones and other items have been stolen. I am aware that a person has been charged for unlawful use of a motor vehicle in relation to one of those offences but am well aware this person was not the only one involved. One of the victims has reported four people involved and two of those were in his home when he was woken from his sleep and disturbed them. These people were unlikely to have been children. They were well practiced in their crimes and the victim reported they had already planned their escape in the event they woke their victims. It is unusual these offenders are now moving through suburbs within the Rollingstone Division, however it is not unexpected. There are some ripe pickings just off the highway on their way through to Cairns in stolen vehicles.
Balgal and Toomulla beaches residents should consider what they can do to improve their home security. Our broader community must take steps to change behaviour to protect ourselves. • Lock up your homes and vehicles. • Don’t leave valuables on display in vehicles. • Review security of your home, dead bolts on doors make a big difference. • Security screens on windows. • Cut shrubs away from around windows. • Are you able have security cameras in your home? • Know your neighbours and look out for our older folks particularly. If you wake to someone in your home ring 000 immediately. I fully expect this group of offenders will return and with your assistance they will be put before the courts and held to account. Stay Safe, Sgt Jacobs OIC POLICE Rollingstone Station.
The gardens around the RTC are looking fabulous. Thanks to the great work done by our gardening volunteers. Rollingstone Rag, June 2022

Toomulla News AED (Defibrillator) available at little library in Herald Street We realise just what a great place we live in when there are a series of public holidays and the camping area and beach welcome visitors from near and far. While most of us enjoy the solitude in this wonderful place it is also good to see what enjoyment we can give to others on occasions. Who would want to live anywhere else? The winner of our Mother’s Day Giveaway was Lila from Denison Court. Congratulations! The next thing to put on your calendar is a Meet Your Councillor get together on Saturday 11 June. It will be held in the Community Shelter Shed in the park from 10am to noon. This will be followed by a sausage sizzle and drinks. Councillor Margie Ryder will be reporting on progress with several issues that have been raised by the Community Association and she is happy to listen to comments and problems from anyone at the meeting. There have recently been issues with unleashed dogs on the streets and the beach. It is timely to remind all residents and visitors of TCC regulations regarding dogs in public. “When walking a dog, you must have it under effective control on a leash. Council provides off-leash areas where dogs can be walked without a leash. You must pick up your dog’s faeces in public areas.” Even if you think “he doesn’t bite mate”, dogs running towards people can cause distress and if someone is injured by falling over or whatever, the dog owner is responsible and can be prosecuted. Please take responsibility for your dog.
Like most Toomulla Beach residents we suffer from periodic poor, or no, internet service. It was so bad a few weeks ago that I contacted Telstra once again about the problem. After six telephone calls over a twoweek period, we finally received a visit from a technician. He arrived at 8.30 am and left at 4.45 pm. During that time, he made some ‘minor’ improvements at the exchange and with the connection in the street box and spent considerable time on the phone with the Faults Department and another Specialty Group. Did he improve the situation? Well not really but we cannot fault him for effort. The problem starts with the local exchange which can only handle limited speeds with ADSL1 (not ADSL2) and is compounded by long copper wire connections to some consumers. The bottom line is that things will not improve until the new tower is built and NBN provide a wireless connection with guaranteed minimum speeds. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and push hard for this to happen soon. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets in the Winter Raffle. First prize is a 6-burner Jumbuck BBQ. Second prize is a $50 voucher and third prize is a wine pack. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Tickets are available from any Toomulla Beach Community Association committee member. The draw will be held on Friday 15th July. Buying a ticket is a great way to help your community. LATE NEWS We have just been advised that Amplitel/Telstra have made a decision on the location of the proposed telecommunications tower at Toomulla. They have chosen the location at the sewage treatment plant south-west of Toomulla itself. In order to provide adequate coverage to Toomulla and sections of the Bruce Highway the structure will be a 60m lattice tower.
Are you having issues with maintenance of your swimming pool? We have a new business that has commenced in our area, Swimming Pool Services. The Proprietor, Steve, is local to our area and has 20 years experience. Give him a call to discuss your needs. Check out his advertisement on page 27. Rollingstone Rag, June 2022

AED (Defibrillator) available at Paluma Community Hall Although it’s nearly winter, the long awaited wet season finally arrived at Paluma. April and May have certainly seen above average rainfall on the mountain. As of 13 May, a total of 343 mm has been recorded for the month in the BOM rain gauge at the Village Green. A whopping 296 mm of that total was recorded just within the week beginning 9 May. After the deluge, the Paluma Dam was at about 80% capacity and still rising as water flowed in from the catchment.
