Hi, it is that time of year when it is drying or rather dried out. This in turn brings all animals into closer proximity to human primates. The wild life phone has been running hot with calls about all animals. Birds in particular are tricky ones as a lot of time they do not have to come into care if they can be safely put close to the nest or into a make shift nest where the parent can feed. Fledgling are learning to fly so spend time on the ground. They are not hurt, just bomb diving. Kangaroos and wallabies are coming in closer for water and green grass as there is not enough food out in the bush for them with the dry. It is wonderful that caring folk put out clean water for them as they need to drink a lot, like us in the heat. Supplement food can be offered in the likes of Rhodes grass and macropod pellets but this is totally an individual thing and only in the dry. Residents in Toomulla feed their local mob and this way they have a lovely healthy mob there. We need to be aware of dogs, they are a huge menace to our mac population. We went to one such attacked large kangaroo yesterday. We tried to save him but no luck. The problem here is we know whose dogs are constantly attacking the animals but until we get physical proof they are free to continue. It is illegal to

a. Have dogs roaming unleashed. b. To allow them to hunt other animals. Native animals are alike and they do not attack unless, trapped, cornered, threatened or terrified for their life. They are a fight or flight and way prefer to flight. Snakes will not attack unless provoked, no animal willingly attacks another except the human primate. It is about time human primates thought past themselves. NEWS

This past month, we lost Susan Wallace (nee Dunnett). Susan was a very special lady - sweet, quiet: “sugar and spice and all things nice”. She and the family have lived locally for many years and we’ll miss her, very much. Our heartfelt thoughts go out to Tony, Lisa, Jason and Katey. Vale Sue. And Narelle Wallace (no relation to Sue) has had a very bad time, health-wise, of it lately. However, she is now on the road to recovery and feeling a lot better, she tells us. Deb Calder has had treatment on her back (spine) and although out of action until the healing is evident and the pain subsides, she’s starting to feel pretty much human again. Some unpleasant news – Michelle Dorrington, who lives locally, has been hit by a car while walking her little dog in Townsville. Michelle is in hospital, very badly damaged, and her puppy has died. All in all, an extremely sad event and we can only wish for Michelle a quick and easy recovery. And for some good news………Graeme Wegert got married during October! Graeme has lived locally all his life and we’re so thrilled to hear of his good fortune. We offer our congratulations and wish him and his new wife a wonderful life together. Gavin & Kim Love welcomed a new baby grandson and what a bonza-lookin’ little man he is too. Goodonya Luther and best wishes all round. •

I’m sorry there’s not more Community Centre news, but there’s not a lot presently happening, so we’ve been concentrating on admin work and some jobs that get left behind in our weekly business, and eternally waiting for construction to start on something. One day, it’ll be a fait accompli at which we’ll all loudly cheer and breathe a sigh of relief.

‘The truth is not monolithic … it is informed by our belief systems.’ And, here is something you might like to try. I don’t know anyone who didn’t like it:

I attended a function in the big Hall recently and social distancing was completely ignored. Not good enough, really!

The sight of a red-bellied black snake sunning itself on my front lawn recently, was a timely reminder that the warmer weather of Spring is also breeding time for snakes. Many snakes will now be out on the hunt for a mate and may travel some way out of their own territory in this quest. Several residents here have reported seeing snakes and only a few days ago, a decent-sized Amethystine python was photographed in the village as it slithered its way across Mount Spec Road, with a large bulge in its belly: evidence of a hearty lunch. Turkey perhaps? A greater number of snake species inhabit the coastal plains than live here in Paluma, so it is a time to be cautious. Gardeners especially, please make sure you give any snoozing snakes a warning of your approach before you begin work.

Paluma residents have become accustomed to hearing the distant rumbling of heavy machinery as work progresses throughout the night on restoration and repair work to Mount Spec Road. Work is carried out at night, under floodlights, with the road closed to all traffic between 6 pm and 6 am, (7 pm to 7 am Fridays). During the day, the massive machines rest in compounds in the car-park areas at McClelland’s Lookout. The complex project is expected to be completed at the end of the year. Coming social events will be ‘Dinner Under the Stars’ at

5.30 on 31st October at the Outer Limits Adventure Centre. Bookings may be made at www.outerlimitsadventure.com.au st

This will be followed by the ‘Trail Run’ on 1 November. Runs will be around the village tracks and include creek crossings and rainforest trails. There are three categories: 6 km, 10 km and 20 km, with the first run to start at 7.30 am. A Food and Coffee cart will provide breakfast

Photo: Jennie Robinson

Traditionally held in July each year, the popular Paluma Push was delayed this year due to Covid 19 restrictions. However, to the relief of the many prospective participants and blessed with perfect weather for the day, the event was held on 11th October. As usual, Paluma was bustling over that weekend with 450 riders, bicycles and support crews. Residents and friends provided a huge volunteer network with checkpoints stationed along the route to provide drinks and first aid. Re-routing sections of the 75 km course provided extra challenges to the cyclists as they had to negotiate creek beds, steep inclines and rough cattle tracks. No serious injuries were reported but some of the bikes looked the worse for wear.

On 7th November, at 6 pm a ‘Monsters and Mayhem

on the Hill’ will be held: a celebration of Walpurgis Night and/or Halloween. This event will be at the Community Hall and everyone is urged to come suitably attired or disguised and to bring a plate to share. Please look at the Paluma website, www.Paluma.org for information about events, bush-walks and other general Information.

Another significant event in the Paluma calendar, is the (almost) Look after one another and keep well. Colwyn Campbell annual firing of Len Cook’s anagama kiln. This great kiln climbs the slope of his front garden. Inside, tiered shelves hold vessels Len has made throughout the previous twelve months. Firing the kiln is a massive undertaking, the fire being stoked by Len and a small team of willing helpers over four or five days with great care to maintain correct temperatures over this period. Once optimum temperature is reached, the kiln is closed, sealed and left for another four or five days to cool. Glazes on the beautiful wares are formed by wood ash and vary depending upon where the vessel was located in the kiln and the kind of timber burnt, so every vessel is truly unique. This year’s firing was held from 19th to 23rd October. Len Cook’s anagama kiln Rollingstone Rag, November 2020

ROLLINGSTONE PLENTY TO OFFER VISITORS

We can capitalise on this opportunity to promote the region at this time of year. Social media is a powerful tool and when used effectively, can really give local businesses—and communities like Rollingstone—a boost. On another note, I’d like to thank Rollingstone and District Lions Club president Ian Dow for inviting me to a club dinner in late September. It was great to have an opportunity to not only address the club, but hear about the good work Lions is doing locally. Like so many of our community-focused organisations, Lions members are a great example of people who put service before self and I look forward to working with them more over the next term of parliament.

As we rapidly approach the end of the year, the Rollingstone area can expect to see a bump in visitors keen to explore what the area has to offer. With great accommodation and activities at venues like Rollingstone Beach Front Resort and nearby Mystic Sands Golf Resort, visitors will be spoiled for choice as they explore our gorgeous local beaches. Tourism is an exciting industry that Hinchinbrook needs to embrace in order to diversify our economy. Rollingstone can play a key part in that, offering a central connection between the rainforests of Paluma, Wallaman, the Palm Island Group and the Great Barrrier Reef which is on our doorstep. Take care—Nick Dametto MP, Member for Hinchinbrook Rollingstone Rag, November 2020

Hello Rag Readers,

Crime – as we move towards Christmas it’s a timely reminder to start considering your home security. Do you lock your doors? Do you hide your car keys? There will be more people out and about looking for fun things to do and traditionally this is the time where property offences reach another level. Locking up is a very simple way to stop yourself becoming a victim.

Unfortunately the deadline has come and gone for Senior Constable Brendan Pownall’s inaugural article in this prestigious newspaper. He is currently upgrading his skills in the area of Forensic Crash Investigation and out of town for a short while. We are all looking forward to his contributions in coming editions. Mango season. What a remarkable time of year and how aptly named. It’s the time of year when the first bout of summer kicks in, the level of the creek drops to ankles wet only and those little things which at any other time of the year would not irritate people the way they do, BUT THEY DO. Yes it is a documented North Qld phenomenon that no one can explain. Is it the 3 extra drinks because it is a hot day that causes it? Is it the restless warm nights where we don’t sleep as well? Is it the rooster kicking off at 4am instead of 6am because of the extra light, who knows? However all Emergency Services will experience a massive lift in calls for service as a result of the change in people’s behaviour. Increases in mental health episodes, drinking bouts, drug binges, domestic violence, traffic crashes and neighbourhood disputes. All these things are this year impacting on a COVID environment.

Cyclone prep – what have you done? Car/Boat/Trailer/Golf Buggy registration – is it current? Driving Licence – did you renew it? Thanks all, Tony Jacobs Sgt 4006515 Officer in Charge Rollingstone Station.

So what are some strategies you can introduce to ensure those little things do not escalate into bigger ones? First, understand you are not the only person to be suffering. If you remember that you will be able to make considerate choices. Second, continue taking your medication. Third, limit self-medication, that will only compound issues. Fourth, just let it go. Walk away cool down. Fifth, if you are in a position that you feel you need some help reach out to reliable people or resources to assist you. On that note I have included some information regarding COVID 19 wellbeing and support services. This is a FREE Wellbeing, Counselling and Individual Support service which offer five FREE sessions with trained counsellors. You will be provided with strategies and resources to manage anxiety and distress. The sessions can be offered personally or remotely over the phone or via video link. Students are swimming every Thursday for the remainider of the term. This year we are focussing on water safety. We have almost had 100% participation in these first couple of weeks. Well done everyone! I’ll leave you with some great work from our students. Enjoy! Andrew Stallman Principal Rollingstone State School

Northern Blossom Bat

Maitland produced a poster about the Northern Blossom Bat. This is some of her work.

Did you know the Northern Blossom bat can fit in the palm of a human hand?

DIET Northern blossom Bats eat nectar from blossoms. They have an amazing sense of smell to locate food and also have excellent eyesight. They collect the nectar and pollen from Australian native trees like Eucalyptus, paperbarks, Melaleuca, Syzygium and banana blossoms with their long tongue. If the Northern Blossom Bats can’t find much nectar or pollen they pluck little fruits. However, instead of eating the fruit, they suck the juice out of the soft fruit.

LIFE CYCLE Did you know bats are one of the slowest reproducing animals in the world? They have 1 pup each litter and can breed from 10 months old. The young is conceived in March and April. They are pregnant for 4 months. After birth they grow quickly. They are independent at 4 months old they eat and fly by themselves Rollingstone Rag, November 2020

Are you bushfire prepared? The bushfire season in Queensland runs from late July to February, and will vary within the state. The Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is an early indicator of potential danger and should act as your first trigger for action. When there’s a bushfire in your area, it’s up to you to take notice, seek information, make decisions and act.
