OCTOBER REMINDERS

Balgal Beach Markets—2nd. Oct

The Community Association and the local Lions Club are proposing to hold a Christmas Day (“Lunch for the Lonely, Sad, and other unfortunate circumstances” – my personal terminology) Luncheon for those who would otherwise spend Chrissie Day on their own for whatever reason. We will be putting it out on the local Facebook Pages and more in the November “Rag”, but this is just a “heads-up” for those who might be interested in attending. If you’re alone, for whatever reason – maybe you’ve just moved here - on Christmas Day and over 18 years of age, you just need to call Chris at the RTC on 4770 7855 and register and we’ll take it from there. The Luncheon will be free but we’ll be asking you to provide your own drinks. We’ll try to make your time with us (about 11 am until 2pm) as pleasant as possible with empathy and smiling faces and at least some of the joy that Christmas should bring. Carers are most welcome, as are couples, animals are not. And anyone who would like to volunteer to help on the day will be most welcome as well. Thank you…………………SueVW.

There is a large parking bay and unloading area at the front of the Car Park, from which a path leads to a ramp, which in turn leads up to double front doors for easy access into the main building. I would like to take this time to thank Mark for his dedication to the job and being a very supportive admin assistant over the past 3 years. Unfortunately due to financial reasons the position of Admin Assistant has had to be made redundant which means Mark’s employment was not affordable any longer. This was not a decision made lightly. Again THANK YOU Mark, you are already greatly missed.

NEWS

Our Chrissie called and spoke to Bobby Holt: Bob is now on oxygen, most of the time. He has been very unwell recently. As a result of this he is going to move to WA to live with (his son) Robbie after the lease on the unit comes up. That will be in late October, so he won’t actually be in Townsville when the C&W music day happens. He is happy for it all to go ahead though and would love to be here if he was still in Townsville…….Love you Bobby Holt and we miss you and Jude like crazy. Sadly Linda Birse passed away this week, always in our thoughts…..Vale Linda Trevor Phillips has been diagnosed with Parkinsons, thinking of you and Carol. Maureen Ryan is still struggling with her health so it’s to be hoped the medicos sort it out for her sooner rather than later because it’s been a lengthy period of concern and anguish for her; Bronwyn Sant has also been experiencing bad times, health-wise, and we hope her medicos clear up her concerns as well. Terry & Roz have sold the Units after many years of management. They’ve done a super job and have been a wonderful part of our community. Thank you, folks, and enjoy your new life. Apparently, they’re going to live locally which is good news. Sadly, we’ve said “see-ya-later” to Mark as Chrissie’s side-kick. We’ve grown extremely fond of Mark over the last few years, and it has been an emotional and sad time for all of us who work with him. However, I’m sure he’s not completely lost to us and that we’ll see him from time to time. PLEASE READ THIS - The Community Association and the local Lions Club are proposing to hold a Christmas Day (“Lunch for the Lonely, Sad, and other unfortunate circumstances” – my personal terminology) Luncheon for those who would otherwise spend Chrissie Day on their own for whatever reason. of business and getting on with the daily running of what we offer the community. We presently have a lot on our plate and it requires “heads-down, bums-up” with lots of concentration, wise decision-making and as little interruption as possible. We’ve had this year’s required AGM and the Committee is returned with Ian Dow not re-nominating but Angie Barr joining. Ever onward…….. Now, we’re PLEADING with our community for a few volunteers for our Library: Deb and Linda work extremely hard trying to keep up with it all, but we badly need about 4, 5, 6 more vollies who can give a couple of/few hours weekly. And we’d love to have a couple of men in amongst that. It’s calm, peaceful, clean work and there’s a social element as well which is most beneficial and healthy. We supply tea, coffee and biccies. PLEASE think about it – we’re desperate! The Seniors and the Garden Group are both back to doing a few bus trips, separately, of course. Such a happy and enjoyable atmosphere on these days out. So thrilled to see it happening again. Let’s hope it continues. Chappy Travis and his youngsters are also “doin’ it” with the Bus and at the Centre. It’s so good to see them all out and about, active, engaged and enjoying themselves. No time there for stealing cars or property theft. Goodonya, kids, and Chappy.

I’ve posted this recipe before, but it is so good and so easy, I thought I’d do it again Two (2) INGREDIENT PIZZA BASE: 1½ cups S.R. Flour; 1 cup plain Greek Yoghurt; Cooking Spray. Mix Flour and Yoghurt in a bowl; transfer to a work surface floured with SR Flour. Knead dough, adding more Flour as needed to keep Dough from being too sticky, for about 8 to 10 minutes. Then, spray a 30cm (12”) Pizza Pan with cooking spray and spread dough to edges of pan. “Politics on all levels and Big Business is one giant club – and you and I ain’t part of it.”

Blog: What changes to child sexual abuse laws mean for all Queenslanders POSTED BY:

Monica Taylor (QCOSS) POSTED ON:

26 July 2021 On 5 July 2021, new laws around reporting sexual abuse of children commenced in Queensland. All adults living in Queensland are now required by law to report sexual offending against a child by another adult to police, unless they have a reasonable excuse. A child means a person under 16 years of age or a person under 18 with an impairment of the mind. A child sexual offence is an offence of a sexual nature committed against a child. It includes indecent treatment of a child, rape, incest, carnal knowledge with or of a child, grooming, making child exploitation material and maintaining a sexual relationship with a child. Failure to disclose the information to police is an offence punishable by up to three years imprisonment. These new laws are in response to the recommendations made by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. For staff working in social service organisations, this means that if your staff and/or volunteers believe on reasonable grounds that a child sexual offence is being or has been committed against a child by another adult, then staff are required to notify police of that belief unless they have a reasonable excuse not to do so. A reasonable excuse for not reporting sexual abuse against a child is not exhaustively defined in the legislation. It may include if: •

you have already reported the offence to an appropriate authority or you know another person has or will report it – for example, if you are: 

a nurse and have already reported it to Child Safety Service

a teacher and your school principal or another teacher has already reported the offence according to other laws

you received information about the victim who is now an adult and you reasonably believe they don’t want to reveal it to the police

you believe reporting the offence would endanger you or another person (other than the alleged offender).

You will not need to report an offence to the police if it has already been reported to an appropriate authority, such as Child Safety Services. More information about the new laws is available on the Queensland Government website.

Properties selling off market! Plenty of genuine buyers. Office of Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook Visit: 86-92 Herbert Street, Ingham QLD 4850 P: 07 4765 4700 | F: 07 4765 4709 |E: hinchinbrook@parliament.qld.gov.au

Winter tourist season opens up to summer travellers During my travels around the Hinchinbrook electorate, I have noticed many southern tourists, grey nomads and caravaners exploring our piece of paradise. With our spectacular tropical rainforests, the vibrant Great Barrier Reef, picturesque tropical islands, refreshing swimming holes and iconic waterfalls, it’s pretty clear why so many have flocked to the North this year. In Queensland, domestic overnight visitor expenditure has decreased, this was expected due to lockdowns, border closures and the uncertainty around the coronavirus. Despite this, Queenslanders have supported their home state, with intrastate holiday spend reaching a record high, up 19.6 per cent to $4.8 billion. For regional areas of Queensland and small townships like Rollingstone, this has been welcome news. Our warmer months are just around the corner, and it is expected that the North’s visitor statistics will drop off slightly but will spike as we near the Christmas school holidays. It’s just wonderful to see people choosing to holiday in Hinchinbrook. As we say hello to the warmer months, we have to slightly change our messaging, ensuring visitors and locals are prepared before cyclone season could be the difference between staying safe or losing everything. Now is the perfect time to prepare your household/caravan emergency plan and put together your emergency kit to ensure you have all you need if a disaster were to strike. To prepare the ‘Get Ready Queensland’ campaign has plenty of information that can help you out, please visit the Get Ready Queensland Government website or contact your local Council. I look forward to catching up with many of you at the Hinchinbrook Interclub Fishing Competition Presentation on Saturday 9 October. The Presentation will be held at the new shelter in Toomulla Park. Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook

ROLLINGSTONE & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB INC. Hi Folks, COVID has influenced the closure of our Pineapple Festival for the last two years, however it has presented an opportunity to refresh the festival with community input. The Rollingstone Pineapple Festival is the local major signature event held in partnership with the community and it’s important that we review the opportunities for fresh ideas and new directions. To encourage community involvement; we will be holding Pineapple Festival brainstorming meetings at the Lions Den on the first Monday evening for the months of October, November and December ready for planning meetings from February 2022 onwards. BALGAL BEACH BOATING & LEISURE CLUB NEWS G.Day ALL, Well due to the threat of rain, which didn’t eventuate, we missed our bonfire night but still had a great time at the hall to celebrate our FATHER’S DAY. We had our usual soup, stew and dessert night. Very, Very yummy. A credit to all our great cooks. We had a competition to decide who cooked the best soup. The decision by the judges ended in a tie with two winners Kerrie with pea and ham and Bernice with pumpkin. We hope you enjoyed your prizes. All the soups were good and different. We drew lucky numbers to see which Father would have the privilege of cutting the FATHER’S DAY cake. Geoff Ivett won and came forward for the job. A small cake was covered with a very large saucepan which he had to remove. Knife in hand he lifted the big saucepan off to much surprise and applause from everybody standing to watch. The look on his face and laughter from the crowd made the night. The cake was only a very small muffin. He was told he had to cut a slice for everyone; he managed eighteen miniature slices which was remarkable considering the size of the cake. Good effort Geoff. We did then bring out the real cake for him to cut. GOOD TRICK hey GEOFF. He also won the lucky door prize, and the raffle too. It was his lucky night. Jessica won the lucky members draw. First timer. Good on ya Beautiful girl. We played GOLF PUTTING and team two; Alan, Linda, Denis and Phyllis were the winners and got the gold. Well done GUYS. Our next BBQ is on the 10th Oct at the hall; hope to see you all there for another top night. Visitors are always welcome meals are 10 dollars per person children under 12 are free members are always free. For information or to join our great club Phone Linda: ….47707991. Until next time stay healthy and happy……...Kindest regards from

Reef Closure- 3rd October until 7th October 2021 and 2nd November until 6th November. All Reef Species Fish will be an illegal catch during these times. For further info www.fisheries.qld.gov.au Dickies Fishing Report: Well, G’day Folks, another month has gone by and coming closer to the Barra closure season, so make the most of our allotted time to catch these beautiful fish. Talking of Barra, there have been some excellent specimens landed in all the creeks using live bait or grey coloured plastics cast into the mangroves. Also, the winter bream have been putting in a good show with Olera, Crystal and Taylors Beach estuary all producing good creek fishing. Winter Whiting still being landed around the mouths of Scrubby, Rollingstone and Hencamp Creeks, best baits being Yabbies, Mantis prawns or strips of squid wrapped around a long shanked size 2 hook. Beware of the Crocs in all the creeks anything from 2 metres up will be looking to make a meal of a dangling foot or hand from a tinnie. We haven't hunted them for 4 decades or more and they have lost their fear of humans. The whales, 30 thousand plus of them should be on their way south by now however there could be the odd straggler out around the islands so it will pay to keep an eye out till at least October. The inner shoals are producing some good Grunter, Sweetlip, Coral Trout and Doggie Mackeral with a variety of baits being used from Squid through to Pilchards. Unfortunately, the weather has not been good with the mango winds keeping a lot of vessels confined to early morning trips close inshore until about 9 or 10 am depending on the tides. Talking about tides Rollingstone Creek needs about 1.8 meters of the tide, Hencamp Creek around 2.3 meters of tide and all the creeks between Saunders and Taylors Beach are silting up and we need a good flood in all of them to open the mouths up. Good crabs are being caught in Rollingstone and Hencamp Creeks but unless you stay close to them the share farmers will be sniffing around. That's all for this month, stay safe and tight lines don't forget to tell someone where you are going and what time you will be returning or put in a trip sheet with Townsville or Ingham Coast Guards. Remember you can leave your out of date EPIRBS or Flares at The Landing for safe disposal………...Regards Dickie. Greetings from the misty mountain village of Paluma. Colwyn Campbell who usually pens this update from our little village is currently unwell, so I have been entrusted with this important task. I hope I can do it justice in her absence. So much for the dry season this year! It seems Paluma has had endless cool, cloudy and sometimes miserable days where the heavy mist has not lifted. It has been wet, wet, wet with rain in the gauge on most days this month. On the first day of Spring we received a bumper 25+ mm of rainfall. Our new BOM rain gauge at the Village Green has been working overtime. Just as we were all starting to go a bit mouldy, the sun has finally come out this week to dry things out. Our gardens have thrived with the dry season rain and there are plenty of blooms to see on a walk through the village. The bright purple and pink Tibouchina’s are always a show-stopper and many a visitor to the village stops to photograph these beautiful trees.

everywhere amongst a sea of purple, pink, yellow and seriously psychedelic outfits. Residents wined, dined, sang, danced and laughed until the wee hours of Sunday morning. Our meeting room in the Community Hall was transformed into a disco for the night, complete with dance floor, mirror ball and music box. The dancing was very enthusiastic, if not completely coordinated! The Outer Limits crew have been busy as always hosting school groups and community groups at the Paluma High Ropes Course and on rainforest treks, mountain biking and canoeing at the Paluma Dam. The Palma Dam Trail Run is coming up next month on Sunday 31st October. Our resident Potter at Paluma (Len Cook) is getting ready to fire up the anagama kiln at the end of September. He is busy stacking wood and preparing the kiln for his week long mammoth effort to fire all his creations. This is a major event in the village with many residents assisting Len to keep the kiln fed with wood and at temperature 24 hours a day. Make a note to visit the gallery at Len Cook Ceramics in the coming months to see his latest creations. Len is an award-winning Potter and his work is impressive. We are most proud of our Paluma Potter! Some of us ‘old rockers’ from Paluma are planning a trip down the hill to see our Rollingstone neighbours in early October. We look forward to mingling with you at the upcoming event at the Rolly Pub. How lucky we are to be relatively Covid free in North Qld so that we can still enjoy gatherings like these. Don’t forget our Paluma Sunday Market is coming up on Sunday 3rd October from 9 am to 1 pm. We are also holding a special celebratory Morning Tea on Sunday 24th October to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of our much beloved Community Hall. Come join us from 10.30 am to 12.30 pm.

As always, there has been plenty of activity in the village over the past weeks. The Paluma Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) has a new First Officer in Ross Hyne and Sonya Bryce is the Secretary/Treasurer. There has been a recruitment drive for new members and we are still on the lookout for willing volunteers to join the crew. Ross and Sonya have convened a recent meeting for training purposes and a further community meeting and the AGM is taking place on 18th September. For a small community, Paluma has a very active social scene. Our resident Social Committee (better known as the ‘any excuse for a party’ committee) held an International Night. As is the norm at Paluma, the attendees bought along a meal to share with friends and neighbours. What an international smorgasbord of food we enjoyed that night as we celebrated multiculturalism - Paluma-style! If you had visited the village last Saturday night you might have thought you had slipped back a few decades as we celebrated ‘Back to the 70’s Night’ at the Community Hall. There were flares, flowers, big hair and big moustaches See you round the misty mountain ridges….Michele Bird

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Council Weather Station Collaboration

By 4/5/6 Rollingstone State School Local school works with Council to construct and deploy small weather stations around the community. Rollingstone Year 4/5/6 students have been working with the Townsville City Council on an environmental technology project to record the temperature across the Townsville region. The Council aims to have 5000 weather stations deployed across the region to give them an accurate temperature map of our area. This information will be used to monitor climate change in our local area. Dylan, Jordan and Lauren, Environmental Officers from the Council have developed a program to allow students to help create and deploy the weather stations. During the term, they have come to the Rollingstone State School each week to work with us on this important project. Students made the weather stations from components brought by the council. We put an environmental censer developed by JCU, inside a Stevenson Screen. This required a lot of fine-motor skills that we don't all have! The weather stations are being deployed all over our local area by students. We have placed 4 in the school grounds and then the rest will be spread over Balgal Beach, Toomulla, Mutarnee and Hencamp. They are being placed about 1.8 metres up a pole or a tree. Data sent from the weather stations will come online over the next few weeks and we will be able to see the temperatures in real time at each placement. If you see a small white UFO on a tree or on a pole-please don't touch! If the UFO has stopped flying (fallen out of the tree) please contact the Rollingstone State school. ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL is looking for donations of every day materials for the students to create, build, experiment and play with at Rollingstone State School. We are asking you to have a look around your house and yard for any unused objects that the children could use outdoors. We only ask that these items are not sharp (including broken) or treated with toxic chemicals. They will be used in the sandpit most of the time so tough things like pots, pans and other kitchen items will be greatly appreciated. These items will help the children use their creativity and imaginations in endless ways. Please drop your items to the school house yard. Thank you in advance for your contribution.

Well, we’ve had some disappointment re: the art class with Ann Walsh, for which we did not get the necessary funding, is not going ahead; maybe next year. Our big excitement was the recently held Brushes and Bubbles night, which was well attended and everyone had a great time. Thanks to those who participated. Now we have less than a month to our big event the Annual Art Exhibition. Opening Night October Friday 15th and, of course, all day on the Saturday (with the Car Boot Sale). Someone will be manning the hall on the Sunday morning as well. On closing let us wish those artists entering the Hinchinbrook Bird-life painting exhibition and competition good luck. This is a great initiative from Tyto Gallery and well worth taking a trip to see the entries. Cheers from the A@RTeam.

Hello Rolly Rag Readers! Driving whilst a relevant drug is present in your saliva or blood is dangerous and affects your judgement, vision, coordination and reflexes, increasing your risk of having a serious traffic crash. Drug driving puts both your safety and other road users at risk and it is an offence in Queensland. Intoxication (drugs and/or alcohol) is one of the Fatal 5. Driving is one of the most dangerous daily activities we do in our lifetime and I certainly don’t want to be sharing the road with people who are or have recently been using dangerous drugs. As members of this community, I am asking for your assistance to make our community safer. Since the beginning of this year, over seventy (70) people have been charged with drug driving within the Rollingstone Police Division. That’s an average of approximately 2 people each week! Drug use stops with the drug dealers. If you observe any suspicious behaviour or aware of people that may be involved in the manufacture, supply and trafficking of drugs you can report it anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or you can report it online through the Crime Stoppers website www.crimestoppersqld.com.au/ make-a-report. If you observe someone driving whilst under the influence of drugs and or liquor, call 000 immediately. Every bit of information helps. Remember in an emergency, call 000. If you are reporting a crime committed against you, and it is not urgent, contact Police Link on 131 444. For all other reports of crime and suspicious activity, contact crime stoppers Queensland on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersqld.com.au/make-a-report and you can choose to remain anonymous. If you wish to speak with the Rollingstone Police Officers in person, where possible we endeavour to be present at the police station each Thursday between 1pm and 3pm. We will try our hardest to be available during this time, but as you might know, crime doesn’t know how to tell the time yet. Please take care and stay safe! Brendan POWNALL Rollingstone Police.
