Free official newsletter of Rollingstone and District Association Incorporated AED (DEFIBRILLATOR) at FISHERMANS LANDING for PUBLIC USE

I would like to thanks RaDCA, the Rollingstone Seniors, Rollingstone Catholic community and friends at Balgal for their generosity in supporting Joshua’s foundation...SIDS. $1,005 was donated from the Balgal district which is amazing.! We are so grateful for all the support given to SIDS. Josh’s parents mission in life is to insure a cure can be found and that Joshua's 46 days on earth meant something. He was here for a purpose. Fishermans Landing Fishing and Social Club Inc. 100 Esplanade Balgal Beach, Qld, 4816. PUBLIC BOAT RAMP AT FISHERMANS LANDING

SATURDAY 12TH AUGUST

8.30 TIL 12 NOON 4 TREVINA CRT BALGAL BEACH

The above club has received some complaints about the unsatisfactory and unsafe slippery condition of the boat ramp at Fishermans Landing. As this is NOT a fishing club responsibility, nor do we have the specialist equipment or expertise to carry out this work, on 15 July 2017, I passed on those concerns to our elected Councillor, Margie Ryder, as this is council responsibility. Councillor Ryder had passed my email to Townsville City Council. The Council contacted me on 26th July to advise the boat ramp has been inspected and that work will be undertaken within the coming days. In the meantime boat ramp users are urged to exercise extreme caution particularly at mid to low tide when the ramp is very slippery.

Thankyou PACE FARMING for donating 2 bales of hay for Judyana and Bob Holts garden makeover !!

Yours Faithfully Neil Thompson Club Secretary

Thinking of our Centre Manager Chris and her family at this time. Chris’s dad has had a serious car accident and is not well. Sending our love and best wishes that Mr Smith makes a speedy recovery!!

Vietnam Veterans’ Day: Friday 18th August.

If you able to attend please do so as we always have a Catafalque Party from Lavarack and it is interesting to listen to the young service persons making their speech. Whilst this day is not as significant as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day to the general public, it is very significant to a number of our members as they were involved. The setting is so lovely and is a special place to reflect on the events that occurred in the sixties and seventies. Service at 10am at the Rollingstone RSL Memorial at Balgal Beach. All welcome to attend. Following the service we will adjourn to the Mystic Sands Golf Club for refreshments. Speaking of the golf club- WOW! “A breath of fresh air has been breathed into the place.” The grounds have been given a real lift- it really does look like a golf course when you play and we no longer have any excuses for a bad shot. The clubhouse is now buzzing with people enjoying their drinks, meals and much social chatter. If you haven’t been for a while why not come over on a Friday night and enjoy the atmosphere and have a go in the raffles or the Goose Club. If you prefer, the club is now open for meals on other evenings, and lunch as well. We need to support Lisa and Mick and their great staff. Rod Girvan and Ewan Cameron attended the State AGM and were impressed with the speakers. Both believed it was one of the best AGM’s they had attended. The Qld RSL has engaged Deloitte financiers to guide Qld RSL to ensure complete accountability and governance which ensures veterans from all areas of conflicts are assisted. The Qld RSL will ensure we remain within the guidelines for ACNC and ATO approval. John Strachan was returned as a Vice President and Ewan and Rod both noted he had done a wonderful job in previous years and would continue to do so. The motions that Rod spoke about at the QGM in June were all defeated as was expected. Thanks to Rod for representing Rollingstone RSL at the State Congress. Finally a big thank you again to those who have volunteered to go on the raffle roster. I had just completed the roster when Teresa J offered her help so she is on my go to list whenever someone cannot attend. Thanks again to Faye, Annie and Doug, Megan and Ken, Rhonda and Vince L, Linda and Dave, Dowie, Reg and Jane, who often helps sell when we are in need. Your friendliness and enthusiasm are much appreciated. That’s it for now as I’m off to Cairns for the Aussie Rules between the Suns and the Bulldogs. Had to rush a little so hopefully I have covered the essential items. See you on Vietnam Veterans’ Day if you are able to make it……..Cheers, Rhonda.

Vale Barry Stephenson who passed away recently. He was a great bloke and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are with Shelley and family at this time . We have just learned that one of our oldest, hard-working and much respected community members/volunteers passed away at the end of July. Shirley CISZEK came to live in Rollingstone about 20 or so years ago, immediately joined the Community Association and the Seniors and set to work being involved. She also worked at the School in numerous capacities. She was Treasurer and Secretary at different times of the Association, she and Nina Rattazzo together put the RAG together each month for many years, and she was always on the go contributing in some way or other. Shirley was a lovely lady and liked by all. When the years caught up with her, she moved into the RSL Homes in Townsville. She would have been around 85 years of age. Luvya special lady. Vale Shirley. David & Fay Hannah came back to Rollingstone for a visit in early July. It’s 10 years since David’s accident. They’re still living in Perth, close to family, and seem to be enjoying themselves and are lookin’ good. Seems to have been a few sickies around: Bob Jewell, Trevor Phillips, Kerrie Cochrane, Wendy Clark, Laurel Akers, Claire Spittler – get better soon, gang. Lots of colds and flu around and probably other not-sowell folk of whom we’re unaware. Also, Meg Jeffree’s daughter had a vehicle accident but is now slowly recovering with lots of help from Mum. 60 people attended the tribute evening to Banjo Paterson presented by the Seniors and what a wonderful evening it was. Entertainment was super and the food was just so yummmmm. It’s really a shame more members of the community don’t attend these special evenings but that’s how it is – however, they don’t know what they miss.  We’ve decided to postpone our Art & Craft Expo for numerous internal reasons. Hopefully, it’ll be rescheduled successfully to October.  Seeking Expressions of Interest from anyone who is happy to have their name added to a local “Mr. Fixit” register. Lots of people would rather have items/appliances repaired than tossed into the trash can. If you’re happy to make yourself available, please call Chris at the RTC on 855. And we’re sure most folk are happy to pay a small charge for the service.  Big “THANKS” go out to Pace Farming who donated 2 rolls of Hay to be used as mulch on a project initiated by the Community Association and co-ordinated by one of our Committee, Deb Calder, to do a remake and refresh Bob and Judy Holt’s garden while they’re away. And this was also a way of recognising all of their kindness and effort over the last few months even though they were both most unwell and indisposed. Steamed Asian Greens: Place wok or frying pan over high heat, add a little peanut oil, when hot add a couple of garlic cloves, finely diced and a teaspoon of finely diced ginger, cook for a minute, deglaze wok or pan by adding a little rice wine, add Asian greens and oyster sauce and toss frequently until cooked through. OPINION is the lowest form of human knowledge. It requires no accountability, no understanding. 

Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. How time flies Cyril. It seems only yesterday that the Editor of This Fine Family Magazine was pressuring me for our article for the last edition and now it is already due again. Di and I are back in the bosom of Paradise thank goodness and catching up on all the garden maintenance etc. Great to be back!! MEMBERSHIP FEES. A reminder all that your membership fees are now overdue so if you have not re joined by the end of month BBQ on 28 July, Treasurer Jeanette will be asking either for your membership application form and fee or asking for $15.00 per adult for the meal. Fees are still only $60.00 family or $30.00 single so it is good value to be a member. Membership forms have been Emailed to all past members or you can pick one up from The Landing. New Members are always welcome. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING(AGM). We have also set a date for the Club's AGM which will be held immediately prior to the end of month BBQ on Friday 25 August 2017. COMMITTEE POSITIONS. At the AGM, all Committee positions will be declared vacant and new elections held to form a new committee. Nomination forms have been Emailed to all members or pick one up from The Landing. We need a new committee with fresh ideas so if you feel you have the commitment and time, please nominate for a position on the executive or as a general committee member. If the positions are not filled by the AGM then nominations will be called from the floor but please be assured, your current Committee has agreed that no person will be pressured into taking on a position so please come to the AGM and BBQ with the knowledge that you will not be harassed. SICK LIST. There are a couple of Members on the sick list, Jeanette Pratt has had a bit of an eye problem while Kerrie Cochrane has had a knee reconstruction which Kerrie believes will make her a better fisherperson. Of course Richard Pratt and Tony Corchrane, as always, are looking after their loved ones hand and foot during their recovery. We wish Jeanette and Kerry and any other people feeling unwell a speedy and safe recovery. DICKIES FISHING REPORT Giday Folks, well we have had some cooler weather during the past month however you would not call it a cold winter by any stretch of the imagination, however the calmer weather in the mornings have bought on clearer water conditions especially close to the beach and allowed the doggie mackeral to move in closer. Chasing the excellent bait schools with the larger spanish and spotted mackeral staying just outside of these bait schools as well. 

Good catches of winter whiting being reported along the beaches from Taylors down to Townsville beaches, also a goodly number of Crabs being potted in the creeks as well.

The creeks also producing excellent Mangrove Jacks and Bream especially close into mangrove snags along the creek banks.

Best baits being silver spoons for the Mackeral or floating Pilchards, also Gars on gang hooks and trawled slowly out side the bait schools. Prawns and live baits in the creeks.

Plenty of Whale pods out around the islands so keep a good look out its well worth the time to observe these beautiful animals. Well that's is for this month and hopefully the weather will be kind for the boaties, if not then our creeks are producing good catches. remember Rollingstone creek needs a minimum of two meters of tide to get your vessel in and out safely and all the creek mouths have silted up due to a lack of a rainy season.

You can leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at the landing for safe disposal. Safe boating and tight lines remember to lodge your trip sheet with Townsville or Ingham coast guards………………….. regards Dickie EPIRBS. The following article has been submitted by a Member about an experience he had recently and makes for interesting reading. EPIRBS DO WORK!!!!!! On a recent camping, fishing trip to a remote beach, a couple of hundred kms north of Cooktown, one of our party suffered a medical emergency after evening mealtime. One of our party had borrowed a sat-phone and purchased a pre-paid OPTUS sim-card from a store in Brisbane. The salesperson did not know that a OPTUS sim-card does not work very far north of Cairns/Cooktown. Only TELSTRA offers coverage over Cape YORK. Sat-phone proved worthless. Ignoring calls of “I’ll be OK” and observing no improvement in his condition, at 9.00pm we decided to summons help by setting off one of our marine EPIRBS in a clearing about 30meteres from the water’s edge. We sat on the beach until midnight assuming a rescue helicopter would arrive and offer medical assistance to our fishing mate. Meanwhile, at about 9.15pm, the wife of the owner of the EPIRB received a phone call from Australian Maritime Safety Authority Canberra wanting to confirm the EPIRBs location and crew details. They could tell from the satellite location accuracy that the EPIRB was signalling from on-land and not on-water. They told her that most EPIRB’s set-off on-land were accidental and would send a plane off after daylight to check. Our mate’s condition was not improving, so at about midnight we set-off a 2nd EPIRB. Within a few minutes the wife of the owner of the 2nd EPIRB received a phone call from AMSA wanting to confirm the EPIRB’s location. She convinced AMSA that the setting off of the 2nd EPIRB was not accidental and that there must be a medical problem. They informed that a search plane would be despatched as soon as possible. P14

At about 2.30am a low flying aeroplane arrived and started circling our location. We were able to communicate with them using our vehicle’s UHF channel 5. They patched us through to a Doctor in Canberra who decided that a medical evacuation was necessary. AMSA also alerted a navel survey vessel which just happened to be passing by and they sent their paramedic ashore to help our mate until the helicopter arrived after daylight to ferry him to Cairns for hospitalisation. Our mate has since made a full recovery. Lessons learned :Partners left home to have list of phone nos. of all other camper’s partners, Campsite location, Vehicle & boat descriptions with rego nos. Sat-phone TELSTRA ARIDIAN network only system that works in remote areas. Can communicate with AMSA plane/helicopter with Vehicle mounted UHF channel 5 and maybe 11. Unable to communicate with Navy using UHF. If on land, set off 2 Marine EPIRBs to eliminate chance of being assumed as accidental set-off. Postscript:- As my EPIRB was only a few months old, I emailed the Manufacturer GME enquiring how I could have the battery recharged or replaced. They checked with AMSA that it had been used in an emergency situation and replaced the whole unit free of charge. A big “thank-you” to GME. Mr Anonymous LAST CLUB BBQ. Attendance at the Club BBQ in June down despite Club Management going to great efforts and expense to import 2 renowned chefs to take Robert's place during his absence on holidays. Thanks to Dickie and Condo for volunteering and for doing a great job, I am assured the fish was "divine". Thank you also to the people who set up and to those great ladies who yet again excelled in the salad department. TAGGED FISH COMPETITION. This competition which was open to members and non-members and which attracted $1,000 in prize money did not go well despite a big advertising effort. Only 5 people entered and no fish were presented to claim any prize, not even the $50,00 mystery prizes so your Committee is at a loss as to what type of functions/competitions you, our membership, require. Even the Closed Club Family Fun Weekend Away now only attracts a couple of families. Perhaps our membership is happy with just a free BBQ each month. CLUB MARKETS. A reminder also that our Markets are on again on Saturday 5 August so please come on down to The Landing and support your Club. As always, we would welcome volunteers to help with The Big Breakfast. Attendance at the 1 July market was down but we were competing with the Townsville Show long weekend. I won't finish with a joke this month, the last one got "rissoled" by the Editor. Until next month, Ninger, Dickie and Mr. Anonymous.

HEALTH TOPIC OF THE MONTH Do your and your family consume enough Fruit & Vegetables? Recommendations from Nutrition Australia is to eat at LEAST 5 serves of vegetables per day and at LEAST 2 serves of fruit. Try to include the colours of the rainbow on your plate and use seasonal produce. But you ask what is a serve? Vegetables - 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables is one serve and 1 cup of raw salad is one serve. Fruit - 1 medium piece e.g. apple is one serve. 2 small pieces is one serve e.g. 2 apricots or one cup of diced fresh fruit is one serve. How to eat the required amount in a day. You need to include at least one fruit or vegetable in your breakfast. Add 2 serves to your lunch and dinner. Use fruit and vegetables as your snacks. What health benefits do we receive from eating this? Reduced risk of mortality from all causes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Increasing one serve of each reduces your risk of all cause mortality by 5% and CVD by 4% according to Nutrition Australia. Natures Notes For naturalists there is always something of interest around you. For people who live in the cities there may be less to see of native species but there would be introduced birds like Domestic Pigeons, House Sparrows, Indian Mynahs and Spotted Turtle Doves and introduced Mammals like Black Rats, House Mice and Rabbits. At the same time we are losing some native species, such as Bandicoots, Carpet Snakes and parrots particularly in the farming areas and replaced with rabbits, foxes and Dingos. Museums and zoos are always on the go to get more specimens partly to show you what is Australian and what is foreign. They are also active in preserving our native fauna and still finding new species of our fauna and flora. Of course I am biased. My life’s work has been in museums and zoos, here and in P. N. G. It always hurts me to see various species of our fauna killed on our roads. In the thirty years I have lived in Paluma I have seen the number of some species of our fauna declining: many of them killed on our roads. So, enjoy the sighting of any of our native fauna. Encourage the establishment of more National Parks and other Reserves that protect our fauna and flora. I am spoilt by living beside the Crystal Creek National Park. Any native lands near you that are protected, make sure they are preserved and not abused. If you have the chance, try to help in any new reserve near you.

Paluma In the Clouds On 18th July, Paluma village became 80 years old. On 18th July 1937 at the Little Crystal Creek Bridge, the Hon. C J ‘Nugget’ Jesson cut the ribbon to officially open the Mount Spec Road linking Paluma to the coastal areas below. To celebrate the birthday, a large birthday cake was shared by the Paluma community at a barbecue following the Paluma Push on 23rd July. The Paluma district has an interesting history. The area was originally inhabited by six Indigenous tribes branching from the Nawaigi language group. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries logging and tin mining were carried out in the Paluma-Mount Spec area with supplies brought up on bullock tracks. Remains of shafts and pieces of mining equipment can still be found around the village. Former timber tracks surround the area, many, along with the former supply routes, now being popular walking tracks. When the Depression of the 1930’s came, Paluma with its cool climate was identified as a potential tourist and health resort venue, and as an employment relief project, the steep winding road was constructed. The road served both tourism and the logging industries. It is now Heritage listed as are the stone-pitched culverts and the unique stone bridge over Little Crystal Creek. The bridge was hand built by labourers overseen by masons. When the Second World War erupted Paluma was virtually taken over by the Military. Soldiers were trained for jungle warfare in the rainforest. Houses and guest houses were commandeered for use as convalescent homes for sick or injured soldiers. Witt’s and McClelland’s Lookouts, with their view over the Coral Sea became lookout posts until a radar station was set up by American troops and later taken over by Australian personnel. The concrete igloos built to house the radar units still exist in Paluma, two of them having been converted into dwellings. You can see a photographic record of Paluma’s history at the Paluma Community Hall. The display is open every Tuesday between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm. Entry is free. Peaceful little Paluma bustled with activity on Sunday 23rd July when the annual Paluma Push bike race was held. The race, now in its 16th year, attracted around 400 competitors and the village population swelled to around a thousand as riders and their support teams flocked in. For the competitors it is a gruelling ride, over some very rough terrain around Lake Paluma through to Hidden Valley. There are three categories of rider with the Competition riders having to cover the greatest distance of 70 km. At time of writing I do not know the results of the race but hope to be able to name the winners in the next edition of the Rag. Luckily, although a few mishaps occurred, no serious injuries were sustained, (to the relief of everyone. Early in July, Paluma rate-payers met with Mayor Jenny Hill and Councillor Margie Ryder to discuss solutions for Paluma’s ongoing water problems. As many of you are aware, Paluma’s water supply comes not from Paluma Dam but from a little local weir nearby. From time to time there have been problems with contamination, the most recent being Giardia and Cryptosporidium. A boil water notice has been in place since last October and Townsville Council has been providing bottled water to residents and visitors. So it was a great relief to everyone at the meeting to learn that a watertreatment plant is on the way. If all goes to plan potable, clean water will issue from our taps by Christmas. Main Roads Department is undertaking slope stabilisation works on the Range during July and August. These works are required to stabilise several large boulders and it will be necessary to partially close the road at times. The roadworks will take place between 9.00 am and 2.30 pm, mostly Monday to Friday but with the possibility of some weekends work. Occasionally it may be necessary to close the entire road. Should this occur, motorists will be advised in advance by variable message boards at both ends of the Range.

Post Script. The overall winners in the Paluma Push were: Competition 70 km, Daniel Rubach; Intermediate 53 km, Alex Diorietes; Recreational 42 km, Nathan Granata.

ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi there everyone, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first couple of weeks here at Rollingstone State School. It is an absolute privilege to be here and to work alongside the wonderful students and dedicated staff. Thank you for making me feel welcome! Prep Enrolments for 2018 – Whilst it may seem like a long time away, schools require as much notice as possible to ensure a successful transition to school for beginning students. With this in mind, if you or anyone you know is intending to enrol their child in Prep at Rollingstone State School for 2018, I encourage you to come to the office to collect an enrolment pack. I would love to have the opportunity to meet you and hear about how we can best support your child’s transition to school. I’d also appreciate the opportunity to tell you more about the wonderful things happening at our great school. To assist with the transition to school, the school runs a playgroup that meets every Tuesday from 9am – 11am (TAG Rolly). I encourage all parents with children who are not yet school age to attend. It’s a lot of fun and can really improve the outcomes for children when they commence formal education. I hope to see you there! Events for the term – We have an exciting term ahead with a variety of events taking place. Students will be supporting the Townsville to Cairns Bike Ride as they cycle through our beautiful part of the world raising money for cancer. Students will also be travelling to Townsville to compete at the ‘Red Track’ athletics event. We will also be holding Indonesian Day, Book week and Science Week celebrations. We are also looking forward to participating in the Pineapple Festival. Our term will conclude with a focus on cleaning up our amazing beaches.

Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Hello one and all in Rollingstone, We have had a very busy month once again with our regular sausage sizzles at Bunnings North Shore. These are very well received by the public and is a great earner for the club! We do a good sausage! The grey nomads season is in full swing up at Big 4 Caravan park and as usual we do a cooks night off every Wednesday night. This involves a hearty meal and entertainment provided by members of the club with John Muller on his guitar which really gets the crowd going. This latest dinner was a Christmas in July where we all got into the swing of things and dressed up. The Townsville to Cairns bike ride to help raise funds for Cancer has been and gone. We provided cold refreshments at the Rolly Pub car park and a well received lunch at Frosty Mango. This is a marvellous event for a very worthwhile charity. On a different note, the Mystic Sands Golf Club is under new ownership with Mick & Lisa bringing a breath of fresh air into the resort. You can see the changes on a daily basis and I recommend anyone who hasn't already done so to try the new cuisine. The chef is doing a brilliant job. This years Pineapple Festival preparations are in full swing. There will be a lot more food vendors, stall holders, shade and seating together with a ton of fun for adults and kids alike. There was an issue with not enough drinking water last year and this has definitely been rectified! Car parking facilities has also changed. There will be a commuter bus to pick up families and bring them to the venue from their parked cars. Supplied by Chris Crow from the award winning Big 4 Caravan Park. Thanks Chris!! I encourage anyone who is going to attend to get the word out to their friends in town and invite them along. It is going to be a great day and fun for all. As usual we are still canvassing for new members to join our club. Lions is a very worthwhile orgainisation that assists not only the local community people and projects but raises much needed funds for a multitude of charities for research and aid throughout the world. If you wish to be part of this tremendous organisation and can spare the time please do not hesitate in contacting me ( Dowie) or any other member of the club for further information. You are very welcome to come to one of our dinner meetings and to get a feel of what Lions is all about at Club level. We would love to see you! That’s all from me ……. Stay safe. Dowie 0412396450

Rollingstone & District Seniors I can really understand why we have so many grey nomads up this way. I mean to say what could one complain about with the weather. This time of year there are NO complaints except maybe for some rain but even that we are used to going without. At least we get a heavy dew. The Seniors took a group into mini golf which unfortunately due to too many critter feeds I could not go to, but sounds like it was great fun and enjoyed by all and the food was up to standard also. The day was ideal for everyone as it was at your own pace and you could stop when you felt like it. The Tribute to Banjo went off extremely well. There was a good turn out and I think most people enjoyed the evening and the food. There was a diverse type of entertainment and must give a round of applause to our newly named ukulele group who gave their rendition of a popular song. The audience loved it. This group could go far, keep an eye and ear out for them. I have decided to give up on trying to get people to interact and join in the many activities we have out this way. I have learnt now that all places have the same trouble and it is only the loyal crowd that turn up. I think that life is way too short, so get out and mingle, do things, have fun and just enjoy. No need to be lonely, sad, unhappy, depressed, come and try the many activities and see if they suit. There is bingo, cards, games ,bowls, garden group, yoga, line dancing and probably many more so just read the Rolly Rag and you will find those I have missed. I myself as a wildlife carer would really like someone who could sew pouches etc for me, not as a full on thing but at their leisure. Sometimes I am overloaded at feed times and again just a hand would be appreciated. There must be elderly folk who would appreciate a visit just to say hi. We as a community could do so much to assist our local folk. Upcoming Events. We have Ingham seniors invite August 24th. Car pool is needed that day so numbers to Rhonda M or Gaye please. Seniors luncheon August 25th and hopefully a bus will be provided but again numbers please. Expo is Tuesday August 22nd and the bus is going in so again numbers please. That seems to be the main items coming up but as usual we still have a games afternoon, bowls morning and evening, bingo once a month, line dancing, cards etc etc . There is a suggestion that an afternoon HOY is another activity to start up and as long as there are enough people willing to participate this could be happening soon, so please discuss it with each other and let Karen know if she will get the numbers to warrant running it. People are willing to run these things if you are willing to patronize it. Ok, sick of sitting here at this desk when the sun is shining out there and I need my fix of sunshine vitamins. I wonder if they could pipe all that water they have over the ditch to us? On that note ciao from Gaye

40 YEARS OF SERVICE ACKNOWLEDGED I recently awarded Mr Kevin Gillam, of Balgal Beach, a certificate in recognition of 40 years of voluntary service to Queensland as a Justice of the Peace (JP). I’d like to thank Kevin for his long period of service to the Queensland public as a JP, which is a voluntary position that can require individuals to take on a lot of responsibility. GAMBLING FUNDS FOR TOWNSVILLE”S NORTHERN BEACHES I welcome the recent announcement of recipients for round 92 of the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. Two not-forprofit organisations on Townsville’s Northern Beaches were successful, being the Black River Pony and Hack Club ($35,000.00 to upgrade fending, lighting and equipment) and the Northern Beaches Cricket Club ($35,000.00 to upgrade training nets). NORTHERN BEACHES STATE HIGH SCHOOL TURNS 20 I recently attended a special assembly at Northern Beaches State High School in Deeragun to mark 20 years of providing secondary education to families on Townsville's Northern Beaches. After the assembly, there were two exhibition rugby league games. There was a game between Year 12 boys and the rest of the school and a similar girls game. Both were entertaining. LNP RELEASES 'HONOURING OUR VETERANS' POLICY The LNP has announced a policy to improve services, provide more opportunities and stronger representation to former ADF personnel in Queensland. Queensland hosts 27 per cent of Australia’s serving ADF and is home to almost 50,000 veterans. Our policy includes: appointing a Queensland state Minister for Veterans Affairs, increasing the number of ex-ADF personnel working in the Queensland public service, appointing a senior public servant as a ‘Veterans’ Champion’ creating a $2 million Veterans Transition Grants Program, and; establishing a permanent Queensland Veterans’ Advisory Council. Providing better recognition for our veterans is something the LNP believes in strongly and that’s why we’ve committed to trying to do more for those who have served Queensland and Australia in the ADF, through our Honouring Our Veterans policy.
