Gidday Rollingstone Let’s have a quick chat about ‘Licensed Premises’. I know that there might be a few people who think that this paragraph is directed wholly and solely at them – and you’d probably be right – but there are a few basics that everyone needs to know. I could prattle on here with all sorts of advice, but instead, I’m going to get straight to the point and give you the offences that you can be given an Infringement Notice for (just like a speeding ticket): Fail to leave premises immediately when required by authorised person - $609.oo Resist eviction when required to leave premises - $609.oo Enter or attempt to enter premises when refused entry - $609.oo Smoking at an outdoor eating or drinking area – $242.oo Add to this, the letter that may very well be delivered to you, stating that you are banned from entering those particular licensed premises for a period of time, PLUS knowing that if you disregard that letter, you could be charged with ‘trespass’ or at least ‘public nuisance’ and get an expensive ride to the Watchhouse for a few hours… and you should have just enough incentive to pull your head in and NOT put yourself in the position of being ejected in the first place. If you have ANY queries about these facts, you have two options… a) come and see me… or b) stick your neck out, be a pain in the backside and we’ll come to you. ***** It must be the right time of year for reality checks… those times when you think everything is cruising along about normal and then, out of the blue, you see things for what they really are. It’s like looking at the grass in the back yard every day from the top of the back stairs. You don’t realise how long it is until you spot a tribe of nomadic Fakawe pygmies passing through, jumping up from time to time to see where they’re going. I suppose the same holds true with people. Just when the drivers on the highway seem to have the right idea about their speed, some Muppet hooks along at 130km/h and makes the radar scream like a sow in a pig trap. Or just when you tell everybody how to cope with the cyclone that’s headed straight at us and it ends up going somewhere else and all we end up with is a breeze that wouldn’t blow the skin off a day old custard and you realise that you can’t rely on the weatherman after all. Or just when you start thinking that someone you trust, couldn’t (or wouldn’t) possibly give you cause to get cranky, they go and pull a stunt that you’d expect from a 17 year old ‘space cadet’. It’s all a reality check – realising that what you thought (or hoped) to be the case, isn’t always the way it is. I suppose sometimes it’s a matter of not letting yourself get too complacent, and realising that you can’t take too much for granted. Sometimes it’s realising that no matter how much a person talks themselves up, they’re not always what they seem. ***** I’ll be laying a bit low for the next few weeks while Sutto flies the ship and wreaks havoc amongst the local population and anyone else who happens to attract enough attention to themselves. He won’t be alone however – for the next six weeks his off-sider will be none other than Senior Constable Jennifer CLEGG – on loan from Deeragun. But I hear you ask, “And how does Shaun’s wife feel about him working with a female police officer?” Ask her yourself when you see her driving around – she’ll be the blonde one in the Land Cruiser next to Sutto. NOTES FROM THE R.T.C

We have two very exciting activities for the June/ July school holidays and the Mums, Dads and Grands can get involved as well. 2 x Make your own Dream Catcher sessions 27 June, Maree Blackman will present a Children’s Workshop starting at 10am followed by an Adult’s workshop at 1pm. Ready to use basic kits will be available as a starter with other materials on hand to individualise your Dream Catcher. A gold coin donation to defray costs would be appreciated. Origami is the second set of workshops being held at the hall on Thursday 6 July with the Adults workshop being held between 2 & 3pm and the children’s session starting at 3.15 to 4.30pm. Natasha Pace and Geri Crouch from the Townsville Multicultural Support Group are presenting, funded by the TCC for their Cultural Outreach to Communities Program. The theory of Origami is the basis of the Adult workshop while practical projects will keep the kids busy. Adults can stay and do the practical session as well. Places are limited for all these workshops so please book with Chris either on 47707855 or email rollingstonertc@bigpondcom. Keep, 4 June from 1pm free for our Country Music Concert: Judyana, Tony & Friends Band will be accompanying our local talent and featuring singers from the Townsville C&W scene. There is a small door charge of $5 for up to 4 hours of country music. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the R&D Lions and Seniors. Gardening Group 10 June at 10am, Natalie Pace is opening her lovely garden up for the enjoyment of the Rollingstone Gardening Group. Thank you, Natalie for your generosity. Tuesday 13 June at 9.30am - We are lucky to have 2 speakers - Patrick Sutton and Kellie Hopkins from Mackey and Wales Law visiting Rollingstone to present an information session on Wills, Advanced Health Directives (AHD) and Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) plus other information pertaining to Seniors. This information session is not just for Seniors though. Presented will be valuable information for the time when our parents need more assistance than they do right now. “Future planning” it is called and to have access to this knowledge when there is time to plan is far better than learning it on the run while under pressure. 24 June Carboot sale – Call 47707855 or email rollingstonertc@bigpond.com to register your interest. Do not worry if you have not booked in, we will take vehicles on the day. No fees apply. Pineapple, Ohhh, pineapples – that is the theme of our Art Expo this year. 5 August is the date. See the entry form on Page 16 in the Rag for details. We are hoping with the consent and input of the artists that we create some local posters of Pineapple Artwork of course to sell at the Pineapple Festival. This would be great exposure for the artists. AB Paterson’s Poetry will be highlighted in a Tribute evening on 15 July at the Hall. The Seniors are putting together a lovely evening with Poetry recitals, Linedancing, a local singer, ukulele playing and a 3 course, traditional bush dinner. $25 will get you fed and entertained; a bar run by the Lions to get you watered – Great value in anyone’s books. – “There was movement at the Centre for the word had passed around…………………..” For our Volunteers – thank you, I did a head count the other day and we have over 40 volunteers who give their time so generously and freely to the Centre and its activities. Well done and thank you, our Community. While we have this number of volunteers on the books there are so many others who “help out” at the Centre on the spur of the moment or for particular activities or events, these “random” acts of kindness are really appreciated and while I may not be around to thank you personally at the time, I thank you now. Ben has recently been driving the bus for us each fortnight – but due to some ill health, he is not doing so at the moment. We hope you gain your health back, even better than before Ben and we thank you for your time with us – your work is always very much appreciated. We are always looking for new drivers for the bus – an application for a Restricted Driver’s Authorisation, a good driving record and a Bluecard is all you need to drive the bus with paying passengers. I have the names of a couple of chaps who have offered their services; I will be knocking on your doors with papers in hand soon. Living in Balgal is a fully qualified, licenced and insured counsellor. Narelle can offer counselling face to face, over the phone or over the internet via skype. Call the RTC for the contact number please. Broadband for Seniors tutorials have been very well utilised lately – Are you needing assistance with today’s technology? CORES Pty Ltd, Suicide Intervention training was held at the Community Hall earlier this month with approx. 10 people attending. Thank you, Robyn and Chris for your excellent and very successful training. Thank you to Hands on Wildlife for presenting a very entertaining and informative talk on the local snakes and spiders to our Gardening Group. Gwen Cahill is slowly recovering from hip surgery followed by a fall. Not a good sequence of events, but Gwen’s a strong lady and is now on the improve. Barb Armfield has also had hip surgery, so we’re thinking of her and sending lotsa good wishes her way as well. Don Pearson hasn’t been well; Bobby Holt is also now progressing nicely; and Lynnie Godbold had a fall and fractured her hip, poor baby. Lotsa good wishes and positive vibes going their way. Special thoughts and prayers for our special ladies – Judyana, Di, Robyn and Madonna. And to anyone else who has been unwell (and of whom we’re unaware), please get better soon. • On a happier note, Clara Verga celebrated her 90th birthday recently. Good stuff, Clara. You are very clever and we all wish you many more returns. • Are you aware that we now have local access to a Counsellor? She has all the academic requirements, Accreditation, Permits, and Insurance, and appointments can be made through the RTC. Just contact Chris on 4770 7855. • We hope to start work directly on our Railway Display Project. Our Lease has been approved and signed and we’re just awaiting its return as proof of permission to start construction. • We’ve also been advised by Council after our request, that they’ll top-dress the Oval at Pace Park, possibly around November; and once our Licence to Occupy is to hand, we will provide footy goal-posts and footy field boundary markers. • Mega congratulations to Chris Crowe and his Big4 Holiday Parks-aligned Rollingstone Beachfront Resort for fending off rivals in Cairns and the Whitsundays to win the Favourite Park in North Queensland category of “Roam” Magazine’s Readers’ Choice Awards. Quite an achievement! • The Country Club has new owners/management which is wonderful news. We wish them much success and the best of luck. • Biggest congratulations to the Rollingstone Seniors who conducted their annual Cuppa Tea for Cancer Morning Tea today. Our big Hall was full (approx. 130, I'd say) and the atmosphere was one of happiness and generosity. To be sure, a goodly amount would have been raised for further research into that toxic disease with which we're all too familiar. Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club Hello Members and welcome. Well, after a rather hectic start to the month the Club’s activities tapered to a more sedate pace late in the month befitting the serenity of where we live which is Paradise.

Month after month the same people show up for which we are grateful but it would be nice to see a few more new faces. There are 4 bones that make up an organization or club and I will explain them next month. Thanks also to Stephanie, Amy and Brooke who conducted the raffles won by Mon Dale and Mr. Moo alias Col Cattle. Congratulations. As there were no fish weighed in for the month of March, there were no prizes to award. Please, record your catch; after all, Dan and Perry do not fish every month. President Di laid a wreath on behalf of the Club at the ANZAC Day mid morning Service but under the new rules was not permitted to lay one at the Dawn Service which is now reserved solely for Service type organizations. I believe this new rule has been introduced to “speed up” the Dawn Service which, in my own humble opinion is a pity to lessen the significance of this annual solemn commemoration. On behalf of Rebecca Hutchinson, I had the honour of presenting a Legacy RAAF Bear to the Rollingstone RSL after the march. RSL Rollingstone has been asked to give the Bear to a worthy Legacy Child in our Community. As we know, Rebecca has only just returned from an overseas deployment with the RAAF and this was a wonderful gesture from a thoughtful, caring lady for which we thank her most sincerely.

A Quiet Word from Dan: It was the night of the new moon in April. The weather was perfect, the ocean was flat and the fish were on. I was fishing with a mate on a reef around 140km offshore. It was so quiet the only sounds that could be heard were the ripples of water gently splashing against the side of the boat and loud banging as fish after fish hit the deck. About 9.00pm we heard the sound of an outboard heading our way through the darkness. The boats slowed; turned on a spotlight and appeared to drop anchor a few hundred metres away from us. They seemed to be drifting and then had a few more tries before finally hooking onto the reef. After an hour or so the small boat headed over to us and asked what reef we were on and which way back to Townsville. Somehow they thought they were sitting on Rib Reef but we were a long way from there. I asked if their Chart Plotter had died and they replied that they didn’t have one. I asked if their Sounder was working and they said they didn’t have one of those either. They didn’t have any kind of map, compass or anything else to help with navigation. They said the weather had turned good before they had a chance to get all the equipment installed. I told them to turn off their spotlight and showed them the slight glow of the Townsville lights in the distance. At that point they said thanks and told me they were going to head for Townsville but I suggested they would be better off anchoring up for the night and head back to Townsville in the daylight as it was safer to anchor up on the reef than risk hitting one of the 5 or 6 reefs they would be going over on the way back without a sounder. The way they were talking I could tell that they had all had a fair few beers too. They took my advice and settled in for the night. I moved around during the night and ended up sitting on another reef at daybreak but about an hour later we saw the small boat heading back to Townsville travelling directly over the middle of a reef which I have seen come out of the water on some tides. These blokes were very lucky they stumbled across us out there in the middle of nowhere. They were in a small boat, intoxicated, no navigation equipment and no idea where they were. Once again my three readers, I write this article from afar, Di and I are in Boulia (where?!!) being very well looked after by ex Club Members and residents of Balgal, Darren Heggarty and his delightful wife Puy who now call this neat little western town home. Puy runs the Bulia Caravan Park and has done a great job in the short time they have been here. Darren took us around the local area showing us the sights and points of interest we would have otherwise missed. I even had a look at his company car but was not permitted to touch any of the vast arrays of do-dads and thingos fitted to it, a pity I thought as it would have been great fun. Similarly, he would not lend me his handcuffs for the night, oh well, it could have been interesting! They are both starved of friendly familiar faces from Rollingstone and are eager to greet and look after anyone who wishes to visit. The Whale season is upon us once again so keep a lookout for these beautiful creatures and remember there are boating approach rules governing them so brush up on the rules before going out. Well, that is about it for this month, hopefully the weather will be a bit kinder for the boaties in the coming months. Don’t forget to put in a trip sheet with either Ingham or Townsville Coast Guard or at the very least tell someone with local knowledge where you are going. We monitor Channels 16 and 22 on VHF and 27mhz Channels 88 and 90. You can also leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at The Fishermans Landing for safe disposal. ENTIRE WELLBEING by Benita Stretching our muscles and body can help in avoiding injuries. According to the Australian OHS statistics 41% of injuries are related to sprains, strains of joints and muscles. With back, hands , shoulders and knee’s being most common. Manual handling mechanisms : e.g. lifting objects, handling objects and falls being the cause. How can we help prevent this? STRETCHING Stretching keeps the muscles flexible, strong and healthy, and we need the flexibility to maintain a range of motion in the joints. Without stretching our muscles shorten and become tight. For example, sitting in a chair all day results in tight hamstrings in the back of the thigh. That can make it harder to extend your leg or straighten your knee all the way, which inhibits walking. When tight muscles are suddenly called on for a strenuous activity that stretches them, they may become damaged from suddenly being stretched. Injured muscles may not be strong enough to support our joints, which can lead to injury. Regular stretching keeps the muscles long, lean and flexible. Healthy muscles also helps with balance, thus preventing falls. Stretching can help improve: . Blood circulation . Ease stress . Reduce stress injuries from repetitive work . Improve posture . Boost energy The 2 most common types of stretches are static and dynamic. Static stretching means a stretch is held in a challenging but comfortable position for a period of time, usually somewhere between 10 to 30 seconds. Static stretching is the most common form of stretching found in general fitness and is considered safe and effective for improving overall flexibility. e.g. quad , hamstring, shoulders etc. Dynamic stretching basically means you move as you stretch. This type of stretching is great as it activates the muscles you are about to use. Improves range of motion Improves body awareness of your muscles Enhances muscle performance and power. A simple 6 exercise, 10 repetition , 1-2 rounds can prepare your entire body for movement whether being a day at work or your daily exercise. I run local fitness classes which we use dynamic warm ups prior to the workout and static stretching at the end. Do I need funeral insurance? Last updated: 11 January 2017 We get that it's not the cheeriest topic on the block, but covering the cost of your departure from the earth is worth some research. According to ASIC, funeral costs can range from $4000 for a basic cremations to over $14,000 for a more elaborate casket, burial and flowers. Like the name suggests, funeral insurance is designed to cover the cost of your funeral. Sounds easy enough, but we found: You can end up paying more in premiums than the value of the funeral cover – premiums can rise sharply when you get older and it may be hard to afford them especially if you are on a fixed income. pre-paid funerals, funeral bonds and life insurance or a simple savings account are often a better choice. So what are all the options? Funeral insurance If you go down this route you'll usually make a regular contribution until age 90, after which time cover continues for free. The benefit amount is either fixed or increases over time, and you're usually only covered for accidental death for the first couple of years. An age limit of between 18 and 79 years normally applies – the older you are, the higher the premium. Risks of funeral insurance Premiums can be fixed or increase each year, and can vary according to your gender and whether or not you smoke. If premiums are not fixed you often won't know how much they increase in subsequent years. If you stop paying your premium, you'll no longer be covered and in most cases won't receive a refund. Premiums can add up to more than four times the cost of a funeral. Call for reforms to funeral insurance In 2013, CHOICE joined 10 other consumer and pensioner advocacy groups, including the Consumer Action Law Centre (CALC), in calling for reforms to funeral insurance in Australia. In response to this, Hollard Insurance released their "Guaranteed Funeral Insurance" product, which promises that: •

the total premiums paid will never be more than the benefit paid – that is, they will pay the higher of the benefit amount or the total premiums paid since product was taken out. "It's positive that there's now a funeral insurance product with improved terms," says Matt Levey, CHOICE director of campaigns and communications. "But our advice is still that consumers look at options that can be more affordable and can give them better value for their money such as life insurance, pre-paid funerals or simply using a separate savings account." Pre-paid funerals The pre-paid option's a better choice, and covers all or part of your funeral, usually at today's prices. The services you pay for are covered when you die, regardless of how much they cost at the time. However, they can be inflexible in case you move interstate to be with family, make sure there is the option to transfer it to another service. There are a few ways to fund pre-paid funerals.

Small contributory funds: You make small, regular payments for part or all of a funeral service with a particular funeral director. Conditions vary between funds.

Pre-purchased products: You pay for a cemetery plot, wall niche or place in a memorial garden, usually directly from the cemetery or crematorium.

Pre-paid funeral plans: You choose the type of funeral you like and pay for it in full. Or make a deposit and pay installments over a fixed period. Few plans offer a refund if you cancel – check this before committing. Some states require registration of pre-paid funerals – check with the Fair Trading office in your state for more information. Funeral bonds Funeral bonds are usually offered by friendly societies or life insurance companies, and require you to make a lump-sum payment or pay by installments. The money is invested and can only be used to cover your funeral. The funeral bond can be in your name or joint names. If you go for the latter, the benefit is normally paid on the death of the first joint owner. Life insurance We think the best alternative is life insurance. Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G.Day All, Our Mothers Day celebration was tops! Forty two members attended the day, unfortunately quite a few were away but we had some visitors who really enjoyed themselves. Visitors are always welcome. With meals for $10, children 12 years and under are free. Members are always free. Our song bird, JUDY ANNA, entertained us with her wonderful music and two of her family helped out as well, they were all excellent. Music must run in the family, I could listen all day. The food was excellent and thanks must go to the BBQ cooks and our special ladies who bring along such lovely sweets. Margaret Humphreys won the lucky door prize and was given the much deserved honour of cutting the Mothers Day Cake to large applause. Fish of the month went to Ken Dickenson with a 37cm Grassy Sweet lip. There was no lucky length winner. The Lound’s Fresh Seafood Raffle was won by Merle Dickenson. Col and Anne Lound have supported our club for many years, they are the best. We are having a special club outing to the Hervey Range Tearooms for breakfast l brunch on the 25th of June starting at 9.30 am. It would be nice to eat together so try to not be late. June, cooler weather and finally some decent rain in May, not nearly enough, but it was much appreciated. Thank you to those people who sent in photos to the Rolly Rag, enabling Kerrie to collate a double page feature on ANZAC Day. Thanks for your patience and efforts Kerrie in relation to the May edition as I know it is a big job to collate the articles and advertising. There I was being clever and thinking I was sending on time, but I forgot to attach the article. Luckily Kerrie notified me and I got it in whilst she waited for a few others. Two-Up was run by Alan, and there was an enthusiastic group who began. Quite a bit of yahooing for a while and then suddenly everyone decided they had finished. Al said no real big winners but a few happy patrons went away with more than they had at the start of the game. Thanks Al for running the two-up and thanks to the participants for joining in. Another thank you goes to Maureen Ryan who donated a box containing a port and glasses. We raffled this and it was won by Garry Luff who was in attendance with Coy, his soon to be wife, and other friends. The port is a commemorative edition made for the 1992 opening of the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial in Canberra. Maureen’s husband, Phillip, served in Vietnam during his military career. Thank you Maureen for this gift. It was also good to see Gordon S and Jim K there on ANZAC Day. They like to represent the National Servicemen’s Association at different commemorations, and being past residents of the area they got to catch up with a few old mates. Keith, our oldest RSL member, was also there and got to ride in Tony’s mini-moke, as the march is too much for Keith now. Thanks Tony. ANZAC Day has passed and we now look to Vietnam Veterans’ Day on the 18th of August. We will probably hold a QGM or HalfYearly meeting in the near future. Members will be notified by mail or email of the date and hopefully we can have a good attendance. We will be discussing the establishment of the Rollingstone Citizens Auxiliary at this meeting, as this was passed at our AGM. This will allow non- service persons a better way to be involved in the RSL. Hopefully we will soon know the new owners of the golf club and we can look forward to even better Friday nights at the golf club. Raffles and Goose Club continue each Friday night and it is good to see a number of families attending and enjoying the club. To any RSL members and supporters, who are not in the best of health at the moment, we wish you a speedy recovery. Hello everyone. I am standing in for Maree King who is feeling the cold in Canada. It has been a busy month for our Club. We had the 4BBB Mixed Championships on 29th April and the winners were John O’Kane and Teresa Jewell with a fine 42 points. Runner-ups were Ashley Foster and Rhonda Coulson with 40 points. The next Saturday was Monthly Medal. Phil Thompson and Bill Kirkwood took out the Men’s Division 1 and 2 medals and Merle Dickenson took home the Women’s medal. 13th May saw the Men and Womens 4BBB Championships played. This event was sponsored by Pet Heaven. The winners for the Men were Stuart Jones and Brian Wilson, who just scraped in with a score of 47. The players who nearly grabbed the prize from them were Bob Lloyd with Wayne Butler and John O’Kane with Peter Simpson, both pairings scoring 46. John and Peter were runner-ups after a countback. Bad luck Bob and Wayne. It is tough getting a score of 46 and not winning a prize. By the time this goes to print we will have had our Bluewater and Balgal Beach Pharmacy Day. Thanks to Frank for sponsoring this day, which he has done so for years. We had a bittersweet moment the other day. We headed out to rescue a fully grown jabiru, a most beautiful and majestic bird. This bird sadly was badly injured but was lucky enough as someone rang to let us know it was needing help. The lady from Townsville and her young daughter were travelling to Ingham and saw the bird floundering on the Bruce Highway. This was on May Day so as you can understand it was very busy on the roads. No one stopped to help the lady try and catch this bird, contain it and then carry it to the side of the road well away from traffic. Unfortunately she had to get her daughter to help which did traumatise the lass as the poor birds injuries were substantial. The young girl gave up her favourite “minky” blanket for this bird and asked that we use it for other rescues. They were on the side of a extremely busy highway for over an hour waiting for us to arrive because she would not leave the bird alone. These people were upset that no one slowed down or stopped to ask if assistance was needed. Chris and I want to thank these two wonderful humans for caring, it is these people that make what we do worthwhile. The bird was euthanised as soon as possible. Now, sometimes we can’t save these poor animals BUT we can euthanise them and put them out of their misery; which is as important!....THANK YOU Nicole and Amy! PLEASE NOTE: Always, SAFETY FIRST!! Do not attempt to rescue animals if it puts your life in danger!!!!

Rollingstone Update As always Rollingstone community once again welcomed me to the Anzac Day celebration and being my second year into the role it actually had a lot more meaning than last year., One part of the Anzac day that moved me the most was when a heap of ladies presented the Red Poppies on the fishing net, that was amazing. Our division was allocated a proportion of the $21.8 million Townsville received from the Palazsczuk Government’s Works for Queensland program to provide employment opportunities and get some local infrastructure projects completed. A major consideration in the project was the focus on getting as many as possible into work as we tough out this difficult period. As announced prior the two projects for Balgal which will be funded under the Works for Queensland program are: • Top dressing of Pace Park • Lights over the Kids Playground near Fishermans Landing

Construction on both these projects will commence in the coming months with construction completed by the end of November 2017. I look forward to continuing to work with the community and if you see me out and about come and say hello. Cr Margie Ryder……...Councillor for Division 1

Rain, rain, rain and yet the birds want to get the food you put out for them on the food table. Why not? The birds will clear the dishes of food before the rain completely washes the food away or fills the food bowls. It is worth watching them tolerate each other until the food is gone. Autumn is changing into Winter and there are still snakes about looking for food and looking for a hideout suitable for hibernation for the Winter. Since I last listed the birds for Paluma and for RollingstoneBalgal three years ago, I have not added any more to either list. A few have not reappeared in the last three years but that is not to say they will not appear again. The weather this year is so different in the amount of rainfall, the amount of misty cloud and the amount of land clearing that we just might see changes in the wildlife from now on. Keep your eyes open and record the differences in your area. Has anyone seen a Taipan this year or seen a Wedge-tail Eagle or seen a wild Dingo? Keep your eyes open. One thing about land-clearing that helps to keep wildlife in the area is to leave a strip of trees and plants along both sides of a fence-line. Even if it is only a metre strip on both sides of the fence, it helps to keep the native wildlife around and robs you of very little if you do not clear the land completely to the fenceline. Give it a go. While I am very lucky living in Paluma adjacent to a National Park, you are living adjacent to the Clement State Forest. Protect it and enjoy it.

Les Hyland Bruce Plant Commemoration: At 11.00 hrs on Sunday 23 April 2017 PDCA hosted a Memorial Ceremony in honour of Bruce Albert Plant, a 23 year old pilot of a RAAF Lancaster( DV174),who was killed along with the crew of 6 on 23 September 1943 over Germany on the return journey from bombing factories near Mannheim. Bruce was the son of the first business operators in the District at Boomerang Park Guesthouse on the Paluma Range Road, Fred and Georgina Barrett. Bruce and his Comrades are buried together at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Germany where they were also commemorated in 2016 by the generous activities of a local group (who rediscovered the remnants of DV 174 in 2015 ) by the erection of a substantial monument in the Speyer Forest where DV174 came down after an encounter with a Luftwaffe Nightfighter. The modern Luftwaffe was represented at that ceremony, as was the RAAF. Relatives of Bruce, including his son John, attended the Paluma Ceremony as well as relatives of Flt Sgt Allen B Cumming, Bomb Aimer and F/0 George Hadley, Navigator. Residents of Paluma and District attended in substantial numbers as did our local State Parliament Representative, Andrew Cripps MLA for Hinchinbrook. The Ceremony was conducted by two RAAF Chaplains, Flt Lts David Kelly and Ken Schulz. A RAAF Catafalque Party from RAAF Garbutt performed the ceremonial duties as did an Army Bugler from 1 RAR, Lavarack Barracks, Townsville. Squadron Leader Ben Cole, Executive Officer of Garbutt Base, gave an address describing Bruce's early life in the District as well as recounting 460 SQNs extraordinary history during the War which resulted in the death of 589 RAAF airmen. Notwithstanding rain the Ceremony proceeded inside the Hall with Flt Lt Kelly performing, with great aplomb, the outside dedication of our new polished granite War Memorial. A lunch for the relatives and the Service Personnel was hosted by the PDCA following the Ceremony, during which The 460 SQN Ode by Magee was recited. The family members of Bruce, Allen and George appreciated the ceremony and the Paluma community recognition of their sacrifice 74 years after that fateful night when they lost their lives in freeing the World of the scourge of murderous Fascism. Our historical photograph collection has been bolstered by generous contributions from the family members . Lest We Forget. Bruce Plant Memorial: You will notice that the Hall has a new dedicated polished granite War Memorial which incorporates the pre - existing Plaque dedicated in 2002 and which now has a plaque commemorating the sacrifice of the only known former District resident to have been killed in the Defence of our Country, namely Bruce Albert Plant, the pilot of a Lancaster downed over Germany in 1943. The Memorial would not have been possible without the efforts of Mr John Fletcher, Stonemason, as well as the skill, knowledge and perseverance of Don Battersby and Jamie Oliver who displayed remarkable hole digging skills and installation nerve in the insertion process assisted by Michael Drew's John Deere mini tractor! As with the "Trees in Memory" marker the granite slab was donated by Jack Gleeson and family (with special thanks to Therese). The signage for the Memorial was done by Signs of Excellence who also prepared our Pioneers Honour Board on the back wall of the Hall. Thank you to Nathan John! The memorial preparation would not have been possible were it not for the very generous donation of $500.00 to the PDCA from the Townsville Branch of the RAAF association whose Secretary Mr Ted Mildred presented the cheque on the day of its dedication in the presence of Mrs Barbara Bower, Townsville President and her husband Doug who is the Queensland President of the Association. At the recent 2017 AGM it was proposed to move the Linton Stone down to the Paluma Pioneers Trees Grove leaving the paved area around the flagpole as a War Memorial solely. This will be carried out shortly with the Linton plaque being repolished and fixed more securely to its stone. Michael Drew Improvements: During the week commencing May 1st Townsville City Council laid bitumen sealing on the area in front of PEEC [Paluma Environmental Education Centre]. Apart from improving parking and loading of buses for the centre this is the location of our Post collection box and Phone Box so it is a very welcome improvement to the amenity of the village. Additionally bitumen was applied to the car park alongside the Village Gree Meeting with Cr Margie Ryder: On Friday 5th May the Executive of the PDCA had a meeting with Cr Margie Ryder and Sarah Kendall [Executive Officer to the Mayor] in the Community Hall. There was considerable discussion of issues that affect our community and, needless to say, the overriding one was the continuing “non potable” water situation which has been in place since the end of last October. It was learned that the weir has been 90% excavated and only awaits settlement to be completed. Cr Ryder assured the meeting that there will be an amount in the upcoming budget to rectify the Paluma water problem. Bush Dance: For many, many years “Wattle ’n Gum” have held their Solstice Dance in Paluma on the Saturday after the event and 2017 will be no exception. The date is 24th June commencing at 19.30 hrs and the cost will be Adults $10, Children $5 and Family $25. This is one of the most enjoyable nights of the Paluma social year so mark the date in your Calendar. Just watch our for runners between Hidden Valley and Paluma during the day as there is a foot race on the same day. Market Day: This year, unusually, there will be a Market Day on Sunday 5th June - the day after the Bush Dance. This is because of the proximity of Easter and Labour Day this year. Markets will run from 09.00hrs to 13.00hrs and the Sausage Sizzle will also be operational from around 09.00 until we sell out. ROLLINGSTONE STATE SCHOOL Hi there everyone, It is with mixed emotion that I inform you all that I have been offered a position as principal at Magnetic Island State School, which I have accepted. The job starts next term. It has been a very difficult decision to leave, I have absolutely loved working with the staff and students here at Rolly, as well as being part of this wonderful community. Rollingstone State School has been a great experience, and my professional growth has been enormous. One of the things that I have enjoyed most is working with a team of experienced and dedicated educators, the expertise and collaboration of all the staff has certainly made working at Rollingstone a pleasure. Some of the things that I am particularly proud of are: The academic achievements and growth of the students, particularly in reading. Junior Leos and our partnership with the local Lions Peer Support Whole school language study Futures and Reef Guardian Schools programs Music (and the Rollingstone State School whole school choir!) Formalising our agreement with our Adopt-a-cop ‘Goughy’ The principal position for Rollingstone has already been advertised, and will be filled before the end of this term. My greatest advice to my successor is to continue to work in partnership with the fantastic community groups in the area, and to always get your Rolly Rag article in on time (or at least beat Goughy!).

Farewell Mrs Pratt After 31 years dedicated to educating students at Rollingstone, Mrs Jeanette Pratt has announced her retirement. Mrs Pratt has been a proud staff member since 1986, with her children, and now grandchildren, being proud Rolly students. We wish Jeanette all the very best with her well-deserved retirement plans!

NAPLAN Our NAPLAN testing for 2017 is now over. The students did a wonderful job, and tried their best with all of the tests. Our wonderful P&C committee provided the NAPLAN top-up breakfast for the whole school on the NAPLAN days. It is a great way to show the support of the whole school for our students that are sitting the test. NAPLAN reports will be sent out to us in early term 3 and will be forwarded to families.

School Camp On the 29th to the 31st of May, our year 4 to 6 students will be attending camp at Daradgee Environmental Education Centre.

TAG Rolly Kerri-Anne has been having a great time with our TAG Rolly group. It is so great to see the young children appear so comfortable at our school and to hear the laughter of the parents and children as they play together. Please encourage any families with young preprep students to join our program, it allows young people to be familiar with our school and to easily transition into our formalised school program when they start prep. Please tell your friends that TAG Rolly starts at 9.00 and finish at 11.00 every Tuesday, all that carers need to do is to bring a plate to share for morning tea. Parents must stay with the children as we follow playgroup rules and procedures.

Parent and Carer support Mrs Wheatley, our wonderful Guidance Officer, and I, in conjunction with ME TOO (a support service for children , young people and families), would like to offer some support for families, parents and grandparents through an information session about supporting and developing strategies to work with young people. During the session, ME TOO will provide information about services and support available to families as well as strategies to support children. The session will be on the 19/6 from 9.00-10.30. Tea and coffee will be provided.

MYSTIC SANDS BOWLS CLUB Very happy to be able to comment on the likely change in ownership of the resort in the coming months. After 3 and a half years of uncertainty and negativity, it will be a welcome change to the atmosphere of the place and the excitement and interest that positive change can bring. Our Green The green continues to improve each week. The late May rainfall of around 140mm was most welcome and should see us with plenty of water in the dam through to the end of the year. Well done to our merry band of volunteers who are most proud to be associated with such a fine playing surface. Pennants Well done to our men’s team on their continued progress in district bowls. We enjoyed three match wins from our 7 games and had one loss by 2 points. Our wins included games against the eventual winners and runners-up. Michael’s team was also in the hunt for the individual rink win. We also unveiled our new shirts. A big thanks to Pace Farming and My Property Agent for their generous sponsorship that enabled us to turn out in such professional outfits. I’m sure it helps us play well. Championships Our championship matches have continued slowly. Michael had a hard fought win over Bruce and we are awaiting the result of the other semi between Bob and Mal. Our Fours match will need to be arranged for the near future. Dunn Cup Congratulations to the selected team of Bruce, Bob Brooker, Tim and Michael. We wish them a strong tournament. We believe this will be Michael’s 14th straight year of participation at the ‘Cup’. Being the 75th Anniversary of this prestigious event sees a range of celebrations as part of the 4 days. All club presidents have been invited to attend the opening ceremony along with an opportunity to spend time with the president and vice-president of Bowls Queensland. Brekky Bowls and Community Challenge Given the imminent change of ownership and the possible impact of this, we are holding off our Brekky Bowls for another month. The next time will be the first Sunday in July. The Community Bowls Challenge will likely be held in August. President Craig will make contact with the nominated groups to get this back on track. Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc Hello Rollingstone, May has been a reasonably quiet month for our club which has given our members time to catch their breath and relax. We have our annual change over dinner on 3rd June. This will include celebrating our 10th birthday and the 100 year anniversary of Lions International. It will be a great night with embers of our Seniors Club providing the catering.\ and the great Judy anna entertaining us as she does so brilliantly. We will see the annual migration of the grey nomad brigade descending on our beautiful part of Queensland from those chilly states from now! This means firing up our cooks nights off at the Big 4 Caravan Park thanks to owner Chris Crowe. These nights are well received by one and all who attend . Its all about good food, entertainment and heaps of fun! This is only a small report for this, our quiet time of the year but before I sign off, if anyone in the community needs our help don’t hesitate to call me. Rollingstone & District Seniors What an enjoyable, entertaining morning the Biggest Morning Tea was, it raised $2,686.50 for the Cancer Council. A big thank you to our major supporters, Pace Farming, BP Rollingstone and RaDCA. Thank you also to everyone who donated prizes for our bats, cent sale and raffle. To Carol Phillips and her girls in the kitchen, thanks, they did a wonderful job! The linedancers did a fantastic skit and had everyone laughing! We cannot name everyone that worked hard on the day – the list is too long- but thanks to each and every one of you! ROLLINGSTONE TELSTRA / NBN MEETING On Wednesday 17 April, I chaired a joint Telstra / NBN meeting at the Rollingstone Community Hall, which was attended by local residents from Rollingstone, Balgal Beach, Paluma and Toomulla. There was a large crowd in attendance. The Telstra and NBN staff were able to provide general information to those who were able to make it to the meeting, followed by a Q & A session and then an hour long one on one engagement with customers about their individual accounts.Thanks to RADCA for hosting the meeting. I asked Telstra and NBN representatives to come to Rollingstone to outline their capabilities and answer questions about service issues in the area. Thanks to the Telstra and NBN staff who attended. NORTH SHORE CLUBHOUSE OPENS AT BURDELL New community infrastructure has become available on Townsville’s Northern Beaches, with the new North Shore Clubhouse being officially opened at Burdell on Saturday 29 April 2017. I was pleased to attend the opening of the new building, which will serve as a clubhouse for sporting teams, but also as a local community meeting place and events centre. The Federal LNP Government contributed $5 million to the project, which ensured the facility was also designed and constructed as a certified cyclone emergency shelter. Thank you to North Queensland based Senator Ian Macdonald who opened the building and credit to former Member for Herbert, Ewen Jones, who secured the funding. Well done also to former Townsville AFL President John Durkin, who pushed hard to ensure the facility could accommodate the growing demand for a first class AFL oval in Townsville. Congratulations to Stockland North Shore on its $2 million contribution, which delivered the adjacent sporting field that will host cricket matches in the summer and AFL games in the winter. As the residential population on Townsville’s Northern Beaches continues to grow it is important that community infrastructure is delivered to keep up with that growth to protect our lifestyle. I congratulate the Federal LNP Government and Stockland North Shore for partnering to deliver the new $7 million North Shore Clubhouse and AFL and cricket grounds.

Regular Activities: Thursday afternoons at 4:30pm we hold BASKETBALL TRAINING at the Rollingstone State School. Saturday morning at 9:30 am BASKETBALL GAME at the Rollingstone State School, cost is $1.00. Sunday at 5:00pm, Touch Football at Pace Park (community hall). Cost is $1.00 and all ages welcome. Rubbish Pick Up The kids regular monthly commitment to keep the creek and Bush Parker Park free of rubbish is on Friday 16th June, kicking off at 4:30pm. We will of course have a sausage sizzle (supplies very kindly donated to Troupies from Fisherman’s Landing Fishing and Social Club) and everyone is welcome to come and help. Fundraising We are completed our fundraising for T-shirts for the children to wear and have had agreat response.. Movie Night There will be a movie night on June 2nd Friday. “ SING” which should be great for the kids. We will have hot chips, popcorn, springrolls and chicken nuggets on sale. This will be held at Pace Park.
