NOTES FROM THE R.T.C Has there ever been a better example of how well Social Media works, we need to thank Rob and Narelle for casting the social media net far and wide. The numbers for this year’s Rollingstone NQ Pineapple Festival were phenomenal and greatly surpassing previous years’ totals. Well done to each and every one of the festival committee members – a couple of new faces does wonders by drawing in heaps of new energy, it really made a difference this year. Thank you to everyone who came along to experience Rollingstone’s fun and hospitality. We are setting up another Car Boot Sale for 8 October from 9am to Noon. As in previous Car Boot Sales, there is no cost for your parking space. With Spring under way, there is plenty of time for that bit of Spring Cleaning and move some of the unused gear. Sorry to say NO dogs please! The Lions will hold a sausage sizzle and cold drinks, Mon’s Slushies and Coffees available too. Call Chris to book a space on 47707855. 2 Suicide Prevention workshops are being arranged for the end of October early November– dates to be confirmed. (What do I do? How can I help? While this is a sensitive topic, Suicide touches all our lives. Being informed, creating understanding, having some tools at the ready is the best way to be prepared. One workshop w ill be during the day – while the second will be held on a Saturday Morning. Please call Chris on 47707855 to book a place or for further information. We said “goodbye” to Gladys Pace during September. The end of an era and if you knew Gladdy, you’d know you’ll never meet her like again. Our love and prayers go to Colin at this time. Vale Gladys. And Shirley Muller lost her Mum also during September. We pass on our condolences to her and John at this sad time. The Association will have a Station Wagon at its disposal for several months. This will be for special trips to Townsville/Ingham instead of having to hire the Bus when the reason is just for an individual trip. We’re most fortunate to have this opportunity; we hope it will prove a bonus to the local community; and that full respect for the vehicle will be shown. Contact Chris at the RTC (855) should you wish to use this vehicle. However, please remember we’re NOT paramedics nor carers/baby-sitters. You will need to supply your own driver; the charge will be $10 plus Fuel (returned with a full tank); use covers only that day.

The meeting re the Solar Farm was poorly attended by the community, so I guess we take from that that everyone is in favour and knows all about it anyhow? I counted 24 bodies and that included the 2 developer's representatives, Chris and myself, 2 Council officers and our Divisional Councillor all of whom had to be there - and 3 kids. That leaves 14 residents. Mind you, there really appears to be no problem with this development/venture which can only be good for our district and will provide limited permanent jobs but around 100 during construction. And it's extremely environmentally-friendly. However, Esco Pacific (an Australian-owned company) is presently carrying out the Council-required-protocols so nothing will happen overnight. P.S: And don’t expect any reduction to your power bill!!

Sorry to tell you that at the AGM (Aug. 31st) the same old faces were re-elected to the Community Association Management Committee. We would really like to see some new blood, in particular a Vice President, but no-one seems to want to make any commitments. And yes, it is pretty full-on most of the time but hey, if you want results they don’t just materialise. However, it was a totally civilised meeting which means one of two things: either the membership is pleased with what we’re doing or they think we’re hopeless and have completely lost faith in us and can’t be bothered any more. No wonder I suffer constantly from nervous dyspepsia.

The Coast Care Group has fallen in a hole through no fault of a dedicated few. I don’t know, but I think it’s all to do with the small amount of physical work attached. Ah well, we tried and as the infrastructure is still there, perhaps there’ll be a resurgence of interest sometime in the future. Let’s hope so, because the front beach could really do with some TLC. It could be just so attractive and appealing if what we initially planned was carried through. We are most thrilled to announce that we’ve been successful in our funding application to the Gaming Community Benefits Fund for a grant to purchase a completely new and up-graded sound system for the Hall – internally and externally (outside broadcasting). We applied for $16,000 and have received $14,000 and for that we’re extremely grateful.

We’re genuinely trying to promote our younger people. We have a wonderfully active group of youngsters and their parents and we really need to put some stuff in place. We’re struggling with Council to put in place 2 x Basketball Courts but this isn’t proving an easy task. However, we’ll keep banging on and you never know – we might get a positive result.

You know, we could perhaps host a Men's Group at the Hall to start with. Tuesdays are pretty free, so we could start with a get-together with the Community Association providing tea, coffee and biscuits (or something even more yummy that someone's wifey might provide) starting at 9am and we could chat and brain-storm for however long you'd like. Not a solution to a Men’s Shed accomplishment, but a start..........who's up for something like that? If we get enough expressions of interest, Chris and I will sort out a date.

We’ve also been asked about a Garden Group. Sounds good. Expressions of interest to Chris, please. Once we get a substantial number, we can put something in place.

The 2016 Rollingstone Pineapple Festival was a resounding success, without many places ran out of food and drinks and parking was at a premium; and it can all be fixed. It was a learning curve which occurred when many more people turned up than expected. Please don’t be too critical because this will all be addressed at our de-briefing meeting. We have a VERY small work base and those people at the coalface all did their utmost and worked like Trojans. I want to herewith personally and publically thank profusely some of those who contributed to the area which was assigned to me: foremost, Chrissie (our Centre Manager); all the wonderful women/friends who helped in the Community Association Tea Room – Rhondy Muller, Joanie Ruddick, Vanda Simmons, Carol Phillips, Cheryl Pearson, Michelle Rossiter, Wendy Elliott, Maureen Ryan, Roz Green, Chris Richardson, and Melissa Kenny; then Rhonda Schwarz and Narelle Shiell who are with me on the Pineapple Festival Committee. Lastly, I can’t forget my old mate, Gordon, with whom I couldn’t have done without this past week. (XX) And Guess what? We didn’t run out of food or cups of tea!!!!

Also reference 2016 Pineapple Festival: Huge public acknowledgement must also go to IAN ROSS DOW (a.k.a. “Dowie”) in his position as Ring Master, Planning & Site Organiser, and Sponsorship Major-domo. You know if it weren’t for Dowie, most of what happens, wouldn’t. Now, I know that’s a sweeping statement but I’ve taken a little poetic licence in the name of gratitude – and a good story!! Secondly another couple of ladies who give their all are our Op Shop Supremos DI STEPHAN and ANGIE BARR. They are passionate and committed and have a team of volunteers that defies belief really. We don’t even have to pay them because they’re PRICELESS. Thank you, thank you, ever thank you........

I would also like to express my personal gratitude to those who donated towards our little Tea Room at the RPF: Maureen Ryan (all the coleslaw ingredients), Wendy Elliott (sausage rolls), BP Servo (pies and sausage rolls), Pace Farming (vegies and eggs), Coles ($50 voucher towards groceries). Never fails to make me weepy when people are so generous. We’ve had our Pineapple Festival De-briefing meeting – almost 3 hours of very civilised discussion. We addressed all things positive and negative and there’re many changes in place and much will be altered, but all for the best. You can help us if you can get it out there NOW, that it’s a “DOG FREE” Event except for Service Dogs!! No, we don’t have Wi-Fi. Talk to one another...................

Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

G’day Rollingstone, Goughy is once again living the high life on holidays. At the time of writing this he would be sipping on a “Vanilla Latte” while dining at one of Lygon Street’s famous little cafes in downtown Melbourne. I’ve tried telling him that drinking Vanilla Latte is a bit “soft” but he maintains he’s still tough if he drinks the said vanilla latte out of a dirty cup. I’m not so sure about that, what do you guys think? Feedback is welcome. In the meantime I’ll batten down the hatches and (hopefully) keep this place ticking over. How time flies, it’s hard to believe I have been in Rollingstone for 12 months. Last August my wife Jen and I made the decision to move from the bright lights and sunny pastures of Logan and embark on a new adventure in North Queensland. It was a bit of a gamble for us and there were a lot of unknowns, but it’s turned out to be one of the best decisions we’ve made. Firstly I’d like to say thanks to the community for being so welcoming. It’s hard to think there’s a better community in Queensland to service. My wife and I would like to thank everyone to date that has had a positive impact on our life and we look forward to being part of it all for many years to come. Ok….. down to business and there’s a few topics I’d like to touch on in this month. Roadworks – BMD are widening the Bruce Highway from Balgal Beach Road to a few kilometres north of Hencamp Creek Road. Due to these works, the speed has been reduced in that area to 80km/h and even a couple of sections which have been reduced to 60km/h. I know this can be frustrating (especially when running late) however please ensure you do not speed through this worksite. Just remember that this is the workplace for many men and woman and the reduced speed is put in place not only for your safety but theirs too. The speed limit through there IS ENFORCEABLE and if you are caught speeding, expect a ticket. There has already been a few incidents through that worksite (including a couple of close calls) so we will be spending plenty of time patrolling the work zone to make it as safe as we can for everyone. The Road Policing Unit from Townsville and Ingham will be regularly conducting patrols too. I’ve been advised that the site will be under construction until early to mid 2017. The little bridge over the Rollingstone Creek has now been completed and is open for use. Please remember that there is a 2.4m height limit for all motorists. There is a designated foot/cycle section over the bridge, so please use that section of you are a pedestrian or cyclist. Also a reminder for the kids (including big kids known as adults) do not jump off the bridge into the creek. The water level is quite low and I do not want to have to attend any jobs where people are seriously injured due to a lack of common sense or a lack of supervision. The weather is warming up so by all means enjoy our wonderful resource, just do so safely. I would like to take the opportunity to remind everyone about securing property. Traditionally over the school holiday period the rates of reported theft increase. In most cases this can easily be avoided by taking a few extra small steps. Remember to always lock your house (including garages/sheds) when you’re not at home and keep items of value secured in these areas. In most cases the theft is opportunistic, so take away that temptation. The wet season is approaching so it is a timely reminder for everyone to plan ahead and complete a general clean-up of your property. A little bit of work now could save you a whole lot more later. Get your rubbish runs done now while we still have some good weather. FIRES – We are attending way too many jobs where local residents are starting unauthorised fires. Please remember, you need a PERMIT for any fire that exceeds 2m x 2m in size. Check with local authorities prior to lighting a fire in case there are any fire bans in place. Unauthorised fires will be investigated and anyone found breaching the law will be prosecuted. If you are inexperienced or unsure then ask for help. Something as minor as a change in wind speed or direction can cause a fire to get completely out of control. There’s no need to put any person or their property at risk in this community. If in doubt, don’t light. That’s about all from me. Goughy will be back on deck to scribe your next coppers log. Thanks for reading and I hope you all have a fantastic month! Until next time, stay safe and look after each other…………...Sutto

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month Did you know: Estimated number of newly diagnosed breast cancer in women - 15,934 (44 per day).  3rd most diagnosed cancer in 2016 behind prostate and bowel cancers.  Incidences of breast cancer are increasing.  Estimated risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85 - 1 in 8.  Estimated deaths from breast cancer in 2016 - average of 8 per day.  Survival rate was 72% between 1983 & 1987 and 90% between 2008 & 2012 - this trend shows that RESEARCH and EARLY DETECTION is contributing to increased survival rate. What can you do to ensure you minimise your risk and detect any breast changes early? Regular self-examination breast checks, do these monthly after your period Periodic checks with your GP or women’s health care provider based on their recommendations and your personal risk factors Wear a proper fitting bra ! Merry we meet. Hi all, nearly time for us to make the “Big Splash”! I have set starting date for Tuesday the 11th of October 9am, at “Rollingstone Beach Front Resort”. Thanks to the very generous managers, cost per session remains at $2.50. It is unbelievable that we have the use of this amazing facility for so little cost. Don’t forget to observe the park rules and when you get to the ‘Boom Gates’ wait until they go down between cars, then give a short beep. Please don’t tailgate. Pay me at the pool. Throughout winter I have been attending Aqua classes in town at Kokoda heated pool, hopefully I will remember some of the new exercises I have learnt to pass on to you all this coming season. So.......start limbering up all you dedicated ‘Aquarobians’ and don’t forget, all the new folk to town are more than welcome to join our friendly fun & fitness sessions held every Tuesday & Friday at 9am from October to April. As I say every year, we are all shapes and sizes so come along and join us in the coolest way to exercise through our Nth Queensland tropical heat. Don’t forget your sunscreen and shade hats. If you need more info. or transport contact me on 47707375 or 0438686127. Looking forward to seeing you all. Stay healthy and keep fit. Babz. P 12

The Sea Turtle Foundation is a not for profit organisation working towards ensuring turtles for tomorrow through action, research and education. On September 14 th Sea Turtle Foundation teamed up with the JCU Turtle Research Group and St Patrick’s College, Townsville to conduct research and monitoring of juvenile turtles at Toolakea and provide the St Pat’s Year 11 Marine Science students with a unique field experience. It was a very successful day and provided data for the long term turtle research program at Toolakea. In other Sea Turtle Foundation news, locals to the Rollingstone area may have noticed that turtle stranding numbers have been very low lately and are beginning to settle nicely after the large increase in stranded and dead turtles in the wake of Cyclone Yasi. If anyone finds a dead or stranded turtle please call the hotline on 1300 ANIMAL. In addition to this if any locals would like to join STF’s stranding response volunteer register please email GBRR-Strandings@npsr.qld.gov.au and ask for access to their online training modules. If you have already completed training in the past but have moved regions please contact info@seaturtlefoundation.org.au to Join our list for this region. Finally, STF will be hosting a community and volunteer engagement day which will include a beach clean up, turtle talks and BBQ at Cape Pallarenda on Sunday October 9 th. If you are interested, please RSVP to alice.white@seaturtlefoundation.org and see our facebook page or website for more information. Thanks, Alice

The Rollingstone Line Dancers The Rollingstone Line Dancers celebrated their 16th birthday in typical fashion with dress ups, fabulous dancing and much laughter. The original theme was to come as you looked when you were 16. As Jan pointed out, however, she wore "pedal pushers" and a t-shirt then and wears exactly the same now! We all agreed that we were so glad that we weren't restricted to the type of outfits our grandmothers wore! So, as a nod to our country and western roots, we could also dress up in clothes with a cowboy vibe. I immediately thought of my much beloved "Roy Rogers" shorts that Mum threw out nearly 60 years ago and, once again, mourned their passing! The winner of the best costume was Michelle who turned up in her full St. Columba's College Winter Uniform. We were equally impressed that she still had her school uniform after so many years AND the fact that she could actually fit into it!!! Next came a "guess the photo" competition of our 16 year old selves. This proved to be quite difficult as there were considerable changes to appearances over the intervening 50 (or so) years. Carol demonstrated exceptional facial recognition skills and won this competition. Word is that ASIO may be recruiting her for secret security operations! The one photo that was easily recognised was for Rhonda S. who hasn't changed a jot! Robyn won a prize for not missing a single line dancing gathering in 12 months in spite of the fact that she has been dealing with some very difficult health issues. Robyn represents the absolute courage, tenacity and good humour of so many of our girls who continue to dance even when they are very unwell but refuse to let illness define or restrict them. So, a small plug for our group. Come along and join us, not only for lots of fun, but great exercise as well. A quick survey the other day revealed our average age is 69. We don't have anyone in the 50s or 80s age brackets yet (YOU could be the first), so if you'd like to come along and join in, no matter what your age, we can accommodate you every Monday morning from 0900 to 1130. See you there! ………………..Wendy

Rollingstone & District Seniors I hope all seniors who went to Toowoomba enjoyed yourselves. I believe that our senior from Toomulla had two attempts to hurt herself, firstly scraping her shin, then she tried train sleepwalking and hit her head, great excitement for the rest, some thought she was doing her yoga exercises. The weather was typical for southern Queensland, sunny one day, wet the next but we managed to do all that had been planned as well as a few unplanned activities. The caravan park was very welcoming and comfortable and quite central to the town. The flowers were lovely but some were not in full bloom and it was a few weeks early for the roses. The clivias, petunias, pansies, tulips, daisies and sweet pea along with many others were great. The bromeliad show had wonderful specimens. I wanted to bring a trailer load home. We went to various places, including Harrow House which was built in the early 1800’s and is a very well kept private home. Attended a craft and quilting show where the ladies admired the amazing skills involved; the museum for Sister Kenny, who initated a new procedure for the treatment of polio. She was an amazing lady who helped SO many. We visited many other places, so it wasn't just a flower trip it was so much more. Many thanks to Gwen for arranging the trip and big thanks to Peter our bus driver and to his navigator Col, who made driving a big bus in a strange city much easier. Cheers you guys, well done. The Pineapple Festival was a resounding success, judging by the crowd of people that attended. It was a shame that the local Seniors stall wasn't as well tended as in the past as the amount of cakes etc this year was down on past years. We all had heaps of warning. I give a huge thanks to those who did contribute and also to those who helped on the stall. We had hoped for more support for the Seniors as we are a Community group and trying to help the same community . I feel that summer is a coming our way………. Cheers, Gaye

Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello and welcome. Before I charge in with my monthly dose of waffle, I need to correct something I said last month about the Marlin Dan Dale caught. It was recorded as 19.2 kg but in fact it measured 1.92 m and weighed about 40 kg, there are 3 columns on the weigh-in sheet and I got confused for which I apologize. As usual our activities began with the end of month Club BBQ on 26 August which was well attended. The raffle was conducted by Brooke Palmer and a friend and won by a very excited Jeanette Pratt who said that was the best thing she had won since Richard came along. Good on you and congratulations. While Mum was winning the raffle, son Robert was slaving over the hot plate dishing up his wonderful array of tasty things, until the fire went out! Sorry, someone (me) forgot to check the gas cylinder. After a time and Dickie trying to punch another hole in the ozone layer, the sizzling sound again emanated from the direction of the BBQ and Robert once again had a smile or perhaps it was a scowl on his youthful face. Thanks again Robert for doing a top job amid calamity and mayhem. Thanks also to Col Pace for the rissoles and the ladies for the salads. The turn out of stall holders at the Balgal Beach Club Markets on 3 September was a little disappointing but we are assured that the market scene in all areas is very quiet. The local community members and tourists did turn out in numbers for the popular free CPR Information Sessions that had the Ambulance Officers constantly on the go. Don’t forget the Ambulance Officers will return to the markets on Saturday 5 November to conduct a free, yes FREE Kids First Aid Course. Thank you also to Graham, Di,Vicki and Julie for their very valuable assistance with the Big Breakfast. Ron Condren (Condo) is again up and about which is good to see. Kerrie (NO fish) Cochrane has had the flu and Col Cattle is getting over a bad case of Shingles. The Member for Hinchinbrook InterClub Challenge Presentation Dinner held at Toomulla on 3 September was a great night out for our 14 Club Members who attended. We all looked resplendent decked out in our Club shirts which drew many favourable comments. Mind you, we all looked bits of train wrecks at the conclusion of the night, there must be something in the water at Toomulla. Club Member Jack Jones won the Junior Champion Trophy but the senior male and female trophies went to Toomulla. This is the 10th year that one of our juniors has taken out the trophy but we obviously need some extra effort from our seniors. Congratulations Jack for doing us proud. Thank you the Toomulla Beach Fishing Club for staging such an enjoyable event. Of importance this month Members is to note that President Di has finally locked in a date for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) which will be at 5.30 pm on Friday 30 September before the end of month Club BBQ. The new Committee Members will be announced in the next edition of this fine family magazine and will hopefully include a new Secretary, Pleeeeease! The very lucky winners of the Club’s Monthly Fishing Competition for July are; Senior Dan Dale with that Marlin; Junior Charlie Beaumont with a .78 kg Butterfish and Mystery, Jack Jones with a .74 Trout. Well done. We recently farewelled long term Club and Committee and Club Markets stalwart Rebecca Hutchinson who, as a member of the RAAF, has been deployed for a period of 6 months to a remote overseas location where there are few friendly faces but lots of sand. We all wish her a speedy and safe deployment, we will miss her happy face around the place and no doubt a lot will miss her massages and beauty products. Partner Brett has been left in charge of the house along with an extensive list of jobs to be done while Rebecca is waning around in an exotic overseas place having a gay time and, we are assured, the “to do” list does not include heaps of fishing. Poor Brett! Please note that the date for the Closed (no visitors or guests) Club Fun Weekend Away to Lucinda has been changed from 11 to 13 November to the 25 to 27 November due to a majority of the Committee and other Members being absent. Please mark this change in your calendars. One would expect that when one reaches the delicate middle age in their life they would have developed by then some form of self preservation. But no, it would seem, take for instance the case of that very mature, normally level, cool headed and sensible Kirsty Pratt who at 40 odd (add or subtract a few) years of age recently decided to go roller skating with the obvious (to us all anyway) disastrous result, one broken wrist. Never fear folks, her most dedicated, loving and caring husband Robert is tending enthusiastically to her every desire, need or whim however trivial and Father-in-law Richard has, I have on good authority, volunteered to forego all of his other interests so that he may do all the housework. Very commendable indeed. Robert is backed up with his nursing duties by their children and, I think, a couple of dogs. For her silly action on the spur of the moment, well, you wouldn’t plan it would you? we award Kirsty Pratt the much sought after Tale of Woe Award. Or should Robert be receiving this award? Don’t forget the end of month Club BBQ at 6.30 pm on Friday 30 September which is free for current financial members. Guests and visitors who are most welcome are charged $15.00 per adult, children are free. Those who have not as yet rejoined this great little Club are now unfinancial; the grace period has expired! On Saturday 1 October the Balgal Beach Club Markets will again be on so come on down for the Big Breakfast and start your Christmas shopping, Santa is now only a matter of weeks away. Some Club Members recently attended the funeral service for Mrs. Gladys Pace who was a long term Club Member along with her husband Colin. Gladys was a beautiful, no nonsense or pretense person who will be sadly missed from our Community and Club. We will always remember her very popular contribution of fruit salad and ice cream at our monthly club BBQs. Our thoughts and prayers go to Gladys’ Family and to Col and the Pace Family for their sad loss. Gladys will be fondly remembered. Did you know that a fine is a tax for doing wrong? A tax is a fine for doing well! Until next month, Ninger

Farewell "Gladdy" From your mates and your Club you are sorely missed already

Pineapple Festival: You have all done an amazing job. I had a great day in the Kitchen- Learnt how to butter numerous bread rolls at once and how to cut a pineapple up properly. It was so rewarding to be working with these volunteers. Seeing their work ethic and dedication was once again just pure inspiration. As an event manager for 28 years seeing the 50% growth from previous year was an amazing sight. Watching the community band together and just pull it off was a credit to you all. Bring on 2017 !! Rollingstone Bridge : Finally it is open Congratulations to all involved. Additional feedback has been noted from Warren and other community members so I will continue to work through these and keep you informed. Seniors Lunch: Well attended once again by the Rollingstone community. I have taken on the feedback about the food and will be tabling this at our next meeting. This month’s Community Hero: Pride, passion and being inspirational This month I am going to choose Ian “ Dowey” Dow Community Groups - Built to Last: Community Groups Built to Last is a Townsville City Council initiative which provides a platform to provide information and engage with Townsville community groups and organisations to ensure they have the information, skills and tools to be effective, efficient and have a sustainable future.

G.Day All, The Rollingstone Pineapple festival was a huge success with over 7000 people attending. Leisure Accessible participated in the opening parade. Our ROSIE was very well received by the spectators as we are always THE PIRATES OF BALGAL and love to fire our cannons to add to the spectacle. PLENTY OF SMOKE FLAME AND NOISE. If you were not able to attend this year make sure of next year. It is lots of fun with great musical entertainment, food, and lots of competition games for young and old as well. Our Deckie Joy was in the parade as Pineapple Rough and rode her push bike. On Saturday the 17th of September we assisted COASTAL DRY TROPICS LANDCARE INC by taking two groups of very dedicated people slowly up and down Ross River, aboard ROSIE, from Black Weir upriver as far as possible, looking at issues affecting the environment and general health of the river and banks. They had several excellent speakers on board talking on all issues and taking questions from the audience. Being interested in these topics I was very impressed with the work they are doing. If you would like to get involved as a volunteer you can phone LUCY HOLMES on 4774 1116. Your help would be greatly appreciated by the community by making our city an environmentally better place to live. She looked pretty good and received great comments and applause. If your organisation would like a trip on ROSIE fishing or cruising give Skipper Ken a call on 4770 7276 or mobile 0407 674 652. We have a trip happening for our Autism Group of friends soon. We are looking forward to meeting up with them again. They love cruising on ROSIE and having a drive. Exciting stuff for them. Please support our spo nsor s as they keep our ROSIE o n the water. Our club needs another committee member with some bookkeeping skills. If you might be interested I would love to discuss the position with you. Our AGM is coming up on Monday 21 November at the Kirwan Sports and Community Club...we would love to meet you there! Call Ken for more information about joining the Committee. Well, take care and stay safe. Kindest regards from our committee. Yours, SKIPPER KEN and DECKIE JOY.

Balgal Beach Boating & Leisure Club News G,Day All, Our club bus trip to the Townsville Cultural Fest was excellent, GREAT COMPANY, GREAT FOOD, and just so much fun. Judyana and I joined in Alex Salvador’s drum circle, it was really good entertainment banging away on the drums. Bernice, Judyana and myself went for a ride on the cheroplane, all the others chickened out; It was really fast, swinging out parallel to the ground, lots of riders were screaming We all ate too much between watching all the different entertainment stages. We arrived back home about eleven pm exhausted but happy. FATHERS DAY CELEBRATION. September 2016 The event was celebrated at Ken Turners place as we do each year. It was very relaxing and really enjoyable. It was a delicious array of nibbles, soup, stews and sweets on the menu. There were seven different stews to be had. We have a pumpkin soup competition each year with our Joy Uprichard winning the gold with a huge vote from the crowd. CONGRATULATIONS JOY. We played back yard cricket, quoits and saggy balls. Musical entertainment was provided by our very own super star JUDYANA. GO JUDE, WE LOVE YOU. Bob Holt was given the great honour of cutting our Fathers Day Cake. Thanks Bob you deserved the honour. Our raffle; 2 nights for four people at THE WANDERERS RESORT Lucinda was won by Terri Dallman. Enjoy Terri. The LOUND’S FRESH SEAFOOD RAFFLE was won by Bernice Ivett. Col and Annie Lound are wonderful supporters of our club. And they have the best seafood in Townsville. It is a really nice social night sitting around the campfire listening to beautiful music, and enjoying all the various foods on offer, chatting and lots of laughter. The annual GHOST RIDE around Ken’s bush track was exciting with a scary ghost appearing out of nowhere armed with a confetti gun, a water pistol and lots of spooky screams. The kids got a big fright but they loved it. PLEASE NOTE. Our next BBQ is on 9th October at the Community Hall. Date change is due to the Footy Finals. Guests are always welcome to attend our BBQs; Cost is $10 per head children under 12yrs free. Our members are always free. Your new committee looks forward to seeing everybody on 9th October at the Hall. Stay safe and enjoy life every day.

Rollingstone SES Hi everyone, sorry I missed last month’s issue. I was busy completing a Road Crash Rescue course on behalf of Rollingstone SES, together with members from Charters Towers SES, Pentland & Greenvale SES. We can now go out and support our local emergency services at a road accident. Let's hope we don't have to put our new skills into action, however we are ready if required. What a fantastic Pineapple Festival. SES had to do a lot of traffic control but we got through it even though it was hot. Welcome to our new recruit Laura Lee Walton and to the other local residents showing an interest in our local SES. Anyone who has contacted Rob Wilson, please phone him for interview on 0418 194 876. We welcome all new residents aboard. A photo from Pineapple Festival and one from our RCR Course. Till next month.. Stay safe out there…..Jeni Maxwell P 19

R.S.L. NEWS WOW – what a month August and September have been! The Rollingstone State School Centenary, the Pineapple Festival and school holidays. Does this get any better? The Rollingstone State School Centenary was one of those very special events. The really excellent attendances; what about Ben Cole and the many many other “old School Girls and Boys”, past Principals, Teachers and Staff. I thought Ken Nicholson looked as indomitable as ever. That was truly inspiring stuff. Our congratulations go to Principal Casey Kavanaugh, P&C President Brad Gough and the Centenary Committee President; Ian Dow. One item I did notice that attracted a bit of attention was the Time Capsule which sits under a rock at the School’s front entrance; put there twenty five years ago (was that during Ken Nicholson’s time?), a stone and tablet explain its history and when it should be opened in the future. Unfortunately I couldn’t be there for the Pineapple Festival, but everything I saw, particularly on the Balgal Beach News Facebook site indicated that it was a pretty special day. I spoke to Major Matt Wellman, Officer Commanding, 9 Transport Squadron, whose soldiers brought up the vehicles and kit, he reported that the troops thoroughly enjoyed the day and with this Festival and the relationship with Rollingstone RSL, the Squadron have formed a real affinity for the Rollingstone District, the soldiers feel welcomed, included and appreciated. Don’t forget; for some of these young men and women, this is their first time away from their home environment, family and friends. I thank the Community for embracing our soldiers in this way. Without banging on, for us this is the most practical achievement for providing welfare and support to current serving members and allows the Squadron to enjoy the Community Engagement they are encouraged to participate in. Congratulations Rollingstone. Has anyone received a post card from Rhonda and Mick? I haven’t. (Sad face!) Of course you may have worked out by now that our faithful RSL correspondent Rhonda is not penning this missive. Rhonda asked could I do this month. I was really grateful when Janine ( the Rolly rag editor) rang me and said I was late with the RSL article! But back to non-arriving post cards. Rhonda and Mick are currently overseas on their long planned and anticipated trip to the Americas. I fully expect Mick to come back with hand tooled Texan boots with Cuban heels, ten gallon hat and attitude (?) for all things American. Seriously, I hope they are thoroughly enjoying their tripof-a-lifetime. They should arrive back late this month and we look forward to their stories, yarns and photos (in lieu of a post card). Which of course brings us to school holidays – is it really the last term before years’ end? Did anyone see the Spirit of Anzac Centenary Experience recently in Townsville? The Rollingstone RSL had booked twenty places to go on 08 September. We filled most spots I heard, had a great day and a nice lunch. Sorry I missed it but I was out of town as usual, in fact I went to Darwin on RSL business, but I will report that to the members and the RSL (Queensland Branch) future assistance to soldiers in the Northern Territory and the NT RSL Sub Branches (who do it pretty tough!) Anyway, Principal Casey, Teachers and staff, Mums and Dads and importantly kids; enjoy your break, make the best of your time and if you are driving home – drive safely. Ewan Cameron, President

Paluma In the Clouds Les Hyland

NBN: There has been quite a bit of difficulty with the newly installed NBN service - largely long delays in making connection with the satellite. In Paluma not everyone has the luxury of leaving their installation on 24/7 which we understand gives best results. We have been notified that service will be unavailable during the following change window : CHANGE WINDOW Start: Thu 29 Sep 2016, 01:00 am AEST End: Fri 30 Sep 2016, 06:00 am AEST Duration: 1 day 5 hours In addition some of us have had an apology from our service providers part of which [from Skymesh] reads : Teething issues with the brand new [ Sky Muster ] service were expected and were planned for. However the magnitude of issues that we have experienced, and are currently experiencing, has meant that our responsiveness to enquiries from new and existing customers, for all types of services, is well below the high standards we set for ourselves. Hopefully, all will be resolved by October. Road Works: The road to Lake Paluma which was closed for extensive works reopened for the start of the School Holidays on Saturday September 16th. Obviously, during the closure there was no camping available in the Paluma District and this may have impacted on visitor numbers which were very low at the History Tuesdays during early September. Art Exhibition: By the time you read this the Art Exhibition from 21st to 27th September will have taken place. There has been quite a good response from artists this year and pieces have come from Paluma, Mt Fox, Rollingstone, Mission Beach and Townsville. Not all are pictures with some spectacular sculptures also on view. At the time of writing [19 Sept] we are just praying for reasonable weather after the dull, rainy spell we have just had. There has been 103mm so far and that figure has only been exceeded in a September four times in the last 28 years. Hall Clean-up: Considering the small number of workers who were there on Sunday 11th September the spring clean of the Hall has made a very visible improvement. Tables, Windows, Toilets and surfaces were rejuvenated but the most noticeable is the removal of mould from the railings around the verandah and approach walkway. Thanks are due to Roland Lange for much of the last-mentioned, but Neil & Judy Kennedy, Roy Mackay, Colwyn Campbell put in some stalwart effort as did Lynn Hyland on the Karchering of the outside walls. The writer scored the toilet job ! Markets: The next Mountain Markets will be on the Sunday of the Long Weekend October 2nd from 09.00 to 13.00 hrs. This is the Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend and will be the last markets of the year. Come up the mountain and have a day out. Visit the Markets, avail of the Sausage Sizzle, have a walk on the newly opened “Andree Griffin Walking track” or just let the kids loose on the Village Green playground. Buddhist Retreat: Although they have visited Paluma for some years, this year is the first time the Tharlam Ling Buddhist Centre have held their Calm Abiding Meditation Retreat in the Community Hall. This was over the weekend of 16th - 19th September and as they were quite a small group they were accommodated in the rental houses in the village.

Natures Notes - Roy Mackay Here today and gone tomorrow: the story of most animal and plant life on earth over millennia. I have been asked to find a Velvet Worm for local photographer, Brian O’Leary. I am trying. It is one of those animals that evolved from life in freshwater to life on earth many millenia ago. I hope to be able to get a photo of it to publish here later. Many of you readers will have seen the Attenborough film ending with this animal. When we had the earthquake a month or so ago, like other earthquakes under the sea, they disturb the sand and debris lying on the bottom. There are areas where much of this material gathers together and is termed Turbidite. There are several areas of this material among the reefs of the Great Barrier Reef and further out. At times of earthquakes these areas are often disturbed (called turbidity) to such an extent that they float up and often distributed on the reefs, the coastal beaches and rocky headlands. That is why we get so much more debris, shells, bones, bits of coral and different coloured sands on the beach after a cyclone. From the middle of September I have been receiving many reports of the sighting of snakes around Paluma. Most of these reports are of Red-bellied Black Snakes, Carpet Pythons, Amethyst Pythons and Brown Tree Snakes. So, Spring has sprung and we should be seeing more from now on for a while. Take care. At the same time we can enjoy the new leaf growth on the trees and the flowering of a great number of tree species. P 23

A Husbands Lament: My wife is a wild life carer, do you honestly know what that means. There is simply no time for cooking, I'm living on bacon and beans, my wife is a wildlife carer always mixing with creatures of fame, while I sit at home every evening without a clean shirt to my name. It IS NOT that she isn't domestic she can sew and even make bread. But when she is thinking of wildlife there is no other thought in her head. There is meal worms again in the cornflakes and womparoo stuck on the bread and it is not entirely unusual to find a possum tucked up in the bed. The telephone never stops ringing, it's a rescue for this and for that, while I sit at home in the evening having a serious talk with the cat. I just cannot cope with the housework, my books are unread on the shelf. I think in sheer desperation I might take up caring myself‌... Anon

Well, how about that Pineapple Festival? Like everyone else, I think we were all blown away by the amount of people who turned up. This also meant that, like everyone else, we were totally unprepared for the demand of the crowd. We were selling soft drinks and water and we sold out on more than one occasion. I must give thanks to those who helped us restock our drinks, including the team at the BP Servo (who were happy to sell us some of their stock at cost) and Narelle and Jacko (who went out of their way to help). We also had hot-dogs going for a while until they also sold out. I really have to express my sincere thanks to Leo Jye, Leo advisor Kristie and her husband Troy plus Trish, Harley, Chelsea, Joshua, my mum Sue and Gordon and his wife for helping us man our otherwise understaffed stall on the day. You guy’s rock... We literally could not have done it without you all!! Despite the troubles we faced on the day, it was a massive and incredibly successful Pineapple Festival. By far the biggest in its eight year history! Congratulations and thank you to everyone involved in making the day what it was! Jake Thompson Leo V/President & Assistant Leo Advisor

2016 MEMBER FOR HINCHINBROOK FISHING CHALLENGE I attended the presentation night for the 2016 Member for Hinchinbrook Fishing Challenge at Toomulla Beach. I have sponsored this fishing competition amongst fishing clubs on the Northern Beaches of Townsville for the last 10 years. Overall, the winning Club with the most points for 2016 was the Toomulla Beach Fishing Club. Congratulations and we hope to have more people fish next year. Individual awards were as follows: Champion Junior Angler - Jack Jones - Fisherman's Landing, Champion Female Angler - Debbie Wellington - Toomulla Beach Champion Male Angler - Don Cumming - Toomulla Beach As always, we enjoyed an outstanding meal put on by the Toomulla Beach Fishing Club. Thanks to all those who helped make the competition happen. It's a pleasure to be able to support local community groups on Townsville's Northern Beaches. 2016 ROLLINGSTONE PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL I attended the 2016 Rollingstone Pineapple Festival. The crowd was huge and the festival was bigger and better than ever! Rollingstone State School was out in force, the parade was fantastic and judging the 24 entries in the pineapple desert competition was a very tough job. So many people and organisations in Rollingstone helped this event come together again. It is a great community to represent and they should be proud of their achievements. I've no doubt next years' Rollingstone Pineapple Festival will be bigger and better again, but everyone will have to work really hard to top this one! P 27

Well, October has arrived and hopefully we will see lots of rain come this way. Apparently from all reports we are going to receive above average rainfall for the upcoming wet season! Sadly, Peter Kesteven passed away in September. Peter who was a long time resident here had not long sold his house on Herald Street, and moved into a retirement village to be closer to family. Peter was a member of the Community Association and the Coast Care Group. He also loved going along to the Markets at Balgal having his stall and selling his pieces of bric-a-brac, trinkets and books etc. Our thoughts go out to his family. Congratualtions to the four winners of the Fathers Day raffle prizes. 1st Prize: Fathers Day Surprise Package - Graham c/o Margie Gallagher 2nd Prize: $50 Bunnings Voucher - John Grady. 3rd Prize: Penfolds Club Port - Mick c/o Kiwi Dave. 4th Prize: Red Wine - Debbie Stone c/o Liza Waters. Thank you to all those people who helped sell raffle tickets and to those who generously donated prizes toward the raffle. Melbourne Cup Sweeps will be selling toward the end of October for ‘the race that stops the nation’ each year for about 3minutes….. Australia’s most prestigious horse race at Flemington on Tuesday 1st November. There will be $1, $2 & $5 sweeps. Money prizes will be paid for 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings. All money goes back to prizes. There is no refund for scratchings. Good Luck ! Dave & Sheree Eberle who have lived in Toomulla for around 15 years (with their two sons Hayden and Trent now live in Victoria) are leaving us to go on an adventure in their beautiful big motor home. Sheree & Dave are very well known in the community for their kind generosity, support and friendship toward people & the community association for many years. Very generous people indeed. Have fun guys and safe travels. We look forward to you both coming back to visit and to hear many funny & interesting stories from Davo. We will keep in touch throughout your travels. Happy birthday to those lucky people celebrating in October. Have a wonderful day. And guess what…… Santa will be here in twelve weeks…..Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way!! Cheers…..Rhonda.

TOOMULLA BEACH FISHING CLUB NEWS The weather has not been so kind to us this year and boss's weather has again prevailed allowing the retirees more fishing time during the week than us mere workers on the weekends. On the clubs's recent weekend trip to Lucinda, the larger boats were left at home due to the weather forecast and we were restricted to creek, bank, and jetty fishing. No fish were caught to weigh in but a couple of nice mud crabs were caught by Marcus Bell, and Jayden Leo Wason, well done boys. We also met an interesting gentleman sailing a large ketch from Townsville to Western Australia that had engine problems and tied up at the boat ramp pontoon for urgent repairs. In typical ‘aussie' fashion we invited him to join us for dinner and breakfast and listened to his interesting yarns. The weather may have been ordinary, however the food, drinks, and most importantly the company, were absolutely fantastic. We also recently held the presentation night for the 2016 Member for Hinchinbrook Fishing Challenge at Toomulla Park. Thank you Andrew Cripps for your support over the past 10 years, this is greatly appreciated. The overall winner was Toomulla Beach Fishing Club, Champion Junior was Jack Jones (Fisherman's Landing), Champion Female Angler was Debbie Wellington (Toomulla), and Champion Male Angler went to Don Cumming (Toomulla). Don was unable to attend the presentation as he was '' Bogged in Birdsville '' on his current adventure travelling across Australia. Thank you to Rhonda and Debbie for running the bus to pick up and drop off the crew from Fishermans Landing. Thank you to President Di (FLFSC) and your club members for your support of this great night, once again good food, cold drinks, a couple of raffles, and very good company was the recipe for a terrific night. PS. And very nice sweets ! Have not heard of any recent catches, except from the master, Eddie Rouse, caught a brace of grassies in the old secret spot ! Have fun fishing…………...RUDEONE.
