To the Most Beautiful & Caring Community Ever. Damien, Daine & I would like to thank each & every one of you who have come together to help us through this terribly difficult time. You have all made it so we could concentrate on Damien & family time, instead of stressing over other things. I would like to thank you all for making it possible for us to go away on a family/honeymoon and allowing us to make memories that we can treasure in such a difficult time. Thank you Harmoni, Allison & to all the Businesses & everyone who came together to help with the Black Tie Sausage Sizzle. Damien has said to me on many occasions that “living in this beautiful Community gives him reassurance that Daine & I will have the support we need” I thank you all for giving him this reassurance & for supporting a local family in the most difficult times of their lives. We thank you all for the bottom of our hearts ♥️
Thank you to Rosana Kersh Photography for the Beautiful Wedding Photos

For those who are getting their contributions in on time we appreciate your efforts and thank you.
On Saturday 24 August, the ladies from the Herb Society of Townsville came out to the hall and showed a group of us how to grow and look after herbs. We learnt which herbs help our vegs to grow and which ones repel insects and so much more. It was a lovely morning for those who attended. We thank this enthusiastic group of ladies for their time and expertise and we are looking forward to doing another group soon……..Deb

Clients are not turning up to be seen by our Vet until after mid-morning. Margaret is sitting doing nothing until her first visit around 10am and as Margaret starts her mornings’ consultations at 9am she is losing 1 hour that she could be busy seeing clients elsewhere. Margaret advised yesterday that if this continues, she will be cancelling her visit up here because she is far too busy on a daily basis to be wasting precious time when she could be fully involved seeing other patients in other areas. Each of her days is extremely busy. We are pleading with you to resume arriving at 9am or we will lose this service which has been in place now for 13-14 years and that would be a real shame. This is VERY IMPORTANT. We can ill-afford to lose any service for which we’ve worked so hard to establish!
Special Thanks To All who sent Cards and Condolences on the recent passing of Bruce Urquhart (Snr) from his Partner Terri, Son Bruce and Families. Please accept our Warmest Thanks

Thank you as well for the donation of assorted herbs to our own herb garden up here at the Community Centre. Many groups and organisations are coming together to present this event including: the Country Music Association Musicians and Performers, The Lions, RaDCA, and many other volunteers. It is great to see everyone rolling up their sleeves to help members of our community in need. Thanks to Matt Fiddes for our up and coming School Holiday Activity in September. There has been a wonderful response to the call for Expressions of Interest from the Community to establishing a Martial Arts activity here. On the back of School Holiday Activity success, plans will be made to provide Martial Arts classes up here in Rollingstone. We are planning a Carboot sale for 26 October under the trees in Pace Park. Call Mark or Deb Calder for the dates and times, if you would like to help out please. As always - Keep yourself safe………….You are the only one who can!!!………………..Cheers Chris “Who’s behaviour can I control?”
2019 Townsville City Council Seniors Luncheon Friday the 23rd August saw 45 Seniors travel by a free bus supplied by the Townsville City Council to the Luncheon for Seniors Week. The Theme was Country and Western and prizes were given out for the Best Dressed. Our Councillor Marg. Ryder was fully decked out as Dolly Parton, a sight to be seen and flittered amongst the tables and we even had Woody from Toy Story. Country music was played by ‘The Gottani Sisters’ and ‘Dustier Than Ever’. Several of our Ladies got up and Line Danced to the music together with the Line Dancers on Stage. The meal was Provided by Michelles and was the BEST. Congratulations from some of our Seniors was passed onto the Michelle Staff. The meal was served by Students studying Hospitality at Kirwan State High School and also by some American Marines who were at Lavarack Barracks. THANK YOU! Townsville City Council for the wonderful luncheon and an enjoyable time with other SENIORS. Len & Wendy Clark P4

Lots of “sickies” this month – mostly with some viral infection which everyone calls “the flu” but which isn’t the regular variety but a bastardized version of an upper respiratory tract infection. Too many to name and anyhow, I’d probably miss most there’re so many. Let’s just hope they all get well sooner rather than later. Otherwise, there’s the usual rash of debilitations and ongoing indispositions which are horrible, horrible, horrible and we wish you all speedy and successful recoveries. • The Rollingstone Community Association AGM is on September 12th. Perhaps a good time to come along and have your say? • We’re working diligently on getting a bigger Op Shop. • Would like to say the same about a new bus, but the cost is prohibitive. We’re a bit up against a brick wall, but we’ll keep on keeping on. • PLEASE DON’T USE THE GRASSED AREA OUTSIDE THE BIG HALL (between the old Railway building and the Lions’ Den) AS A VEHICLE THOROUGHFARE!! • Clients are not turning up to be seen by our Vet until after mid-morning. She is sitting doing nothing until her first visits around 10am. She starts her mornings’ consultations at 9am. She advised last week that if this continues, she will be cancelling her visit up here because she is far too busy on a daily basis to be wasting precious time when she could be fully involved seeing other patients in other areas. Each of her days is extremely busy. We are pleading with you to resume arriving at 9am or we will lose this service which has been in place now for 13-14 years............and that would be a real shame. • PLEASE KEEP YOUR DOGS CONTAINED WITHIN YOUR OWN YARD and when you do take them out, PLEASE PUT THEM ON A LEAD. • And for Back-Yard Breeders (not that anyone will take any notice): Don't do indiscriminate out-crosses!! An injudicious out-cross can produce an aggregation of every imaginable fault in the breed. • The number of locals attending the service at the Beach Cenotaph on Long Tan Day was really disappointing. I counted 21 civilians and of that, most were visitors. I wonder why more people aren't prepared to honour our Vietnam Vets? This year was the worst numbers I have seen for this ceremony. And, yes, it was published in the “Rag”. • And that’s the next problem: I have been reminded lately that not that many people actually read the “Rag”. And, of course, that explains why so many questions are asked on social media that could be answered if the “Rag” was read. That is primarily what the “Rag” is for.............to promote local information. Perhaps we don’t need to keep printing our little newsletter – would save us a lot of money! I’ve also been strongly advised that the majority of people these days prefer the digital variety when broadcasting information. Well, the “Rag” is available online!!! Profuse swearing is generally associated with a low IQ, a limited vocabulary and uncontrollable hostility. Live well, love much, laugh often....................... “Sancho Panza”.

Rollingstone State School Hi Community, The year is flying! We are halfway through Term 3 already. In preparation for the transition to 2020, we are asking all parents/carers who may have a prep student for next year, please contact the school on 47707313. At this stage, we are only chasing approximate student numbers for planning processes. Over the past couple of weeks, Year 3 & 4 have been busy writing. Their English task was to write a retell of the Lorax from a different perspective and present to the class. I hope you enjoy Andrew Stallman
THE LORAX Years ago, I was flying around happily singing songs to the Brown Bar-ba loots from the tippy top tops of the Truffula trees. I watched the Bar-ba loots all day long while they jumped and danced, wiggled and jiggled and climbed up the trees to share the fruits. One early morning, I saw from my tree, dust fly up behind a wagon. The man, named the Once-ler, was super fascinated with our trees. Our home was never the same….the same again! After unloading his wagon, he cut down one of the trees that I was Brown Bar-ba-loot flying to. I screamed in surprise and horror because I’ve never seen anyone try to destroy our home before. Then I heard a guzzump as a little man I’ve never seen before popped out of the stump. I heard the man say; “Hey you! Yes you! What is that weird thing This is me! Swomee Swan in your hand?” The Once-ler didn’t answer. He kept on making weird things and cut down more Truffula Trees. He invited all of his family to make weird and whacky things with our tree tops. Then he invented a four-tree cutting machine. He was working all day and night. We could not sleep at all. It was horrible. Would you like to be me? Seven months passed and trees continued to tumble. The Lorax sent the Bar-ba loots off because they had no food in their tummies. I waved them good bye and gave them the best of luck. Several months passed and we could not sing anymore because there was too much smog in the air and in our throats and our wings felt like they were never there. We had to leave, so that’s what we did. We got our things and flew away. We were so upset that we had to go! We said bye to the Humming Fish then we left, we were heart broken. The Lorax checked every now and then on our old home. One day he came back smiling. We were so happy when he told us the good news that we could all return to our old home. The Humming fish were happy when we told them the news and so were the Brown Bar-ba loots. We lived happily in fresh air, clean water and free from people who want to get rid of our home. Mia P

Keeping Touch with Community As the Member for Hinchinbrook, it’s important for me to get out and about to meet with Constituents and listen to their concerns. Recently I joined local Councilor Margie Ryder for a Community Meeting at Balgal Beach’s Fisherman’s Landing, where locals discussed ideas to help better their area and I talked with residents about where I could assist at a State level. Elsewhere, Cr Ryder and I are working with Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to address the incredibly frustrating issue of careless rubbish disposal at Christmas Creek rest stop along the Bruce Highway. Only last month was a photo sent to me of rubbish sprawled across the area, despite TMR having bulk bins there for the convenience of motorists who make a rest stop along the highway. This is not a dumping point for locals or travelers’ household waste and large rubbish items. Cr Ryder and I met on site to discuss the issue with officials from TMR to look at solutions going forward. The fact of the matter is when people abuse services like these, it puts the future of those services in jeopardy. A little further south, I have also called for TMR to do an assessment of the benefits an overpass between North Shore Boulevard and nearby Shaw Road could have for motorists making the morning commute into town. A piece of infrastructure like this would make life on the road easier for residents living on the northern beaches, including Rollingstone. The State Government needs to move swiftly on this before it becomes a major issue. Collecting the required data gives us the opportunity to have an evidence based discussion on build this road infrastructure upgrade the north side of Townsville so badly needs. On a more cheerful note, I know the community is looking forward to the annual Rollingstone Pineapple Festival on September 21. This is a wonderful Community event at Pace Park with plenty of fun, food and entertainment for the whole family. Have a great September! Nick Dametto MP Member for Hinchinbrook

People with asthma have sensitive airways in their lungs which react to triggers. When people react to these triggers it causes a “flare-up” to the muscles around the airway. The airway squeeze tight, the airways swell and become narrow. These things make it harder to breathe. What are triggers? • Animals Cats Dogs Rabbits Mice, rats and Guinea Pigs Birds Horses • Sprays Deodorants Strong scents Perfume Incense • Heating and cooling Overhead fans (dust on blades) Air conditioning (filters cleaned regularly) Evaporative and refrigerated air cons ( increased risk of mould or house dust mites) • Pollens and Thunderstorms Grasses Weeds (which are wind pollinated) Tress • Thunderstorm asthma events are thought to be trigged by an uncommon combination of high grass pollen levels and certain types of thunderstorms resulting in large numbers of people developing asthma symptoms over a short period of time.
• Bushfires and reduction burns Asthma well managed = a full and active life. Keeping control of your asthma means • You have symptoms on no more than two days a week • You need your reliever medicine no more than two days a week or not at all • Your activities aren’t limited by your asthma • You don’t get any symptoms at night or when you wake up. • Knowing what your triggers are and how to control them. Eg. Bushfires/ controlled burns – stay inside with the windows and doors closed, avoid exercise while smoke is in the air, leave the area for the day. • Have an asthma action plan with written instructions from your doctor. Asthma well managed = a full and active life. In an emergency please call 000 If you have any questions in regards to Asthma please contact your local Pharmacist. The team at Balgal Beach Pharmacy

Musings from a New Wallaby Father…….. This year is my first Father’s Day. I never thought being a Father could be so rewarding and emotional. I first met my partner around 10 months ago after I heard her telling a friend how she was bought up in a foster home after her Mother was killed and her Dad taken away. As I listened I knew I had to have her for my partner and have our own family. Not long after, she told me I was going to be a Dad as she pointed to what seemed like a little bug. I looked closer and tears filled my eyes as I could see it was our baby making its way up into my partners pouch to develop into a Wallaby. I didn’t know if it was a boy or girl and frankly, I didn’t care, I was going to be a Dad. Around three months, my Son poked his head out of the pouch. Yes; I said my Son. I have a son and I am so happy to be a Father and my partner a Mother. It is going to be a great Father’s Day, Two reasons to celebrate....being a Daddy for the first time and showing my Son off to the Mob and second, my partner has her own family.... Our Son is out of the pouch these days and rather a handful...he is fascinated by my tail and keeps pulling it when I’m not looking and jumps all over his mother, but we wouldn’t change a thing...I love being a Dad. HAPPY FATHERS DAY.....See you in the great outdoors.......Chris
Rollingstone & District Seniors Greetings once again, this Rolly Rag seems to come around quicker each month. We had a stall at the Seniors Expo yesterday for the NQ Wildlife Care and saw a few familiar faces there. I don’t know if being behind a stall made a difference but I did not think there was as many people there this year. Could be wrong. Was still a good crowd with plenty of information for all. We had a great day and met some lovely people. The outing to Ingham went famously, a great morning had by all who went, great entertainment, great laughs and super full bellies. The ladies of Ingham and district do themselves proud with some of the yummiest home made food you would ever eat. It was so hard trying to fit all the different foods in. A little of a lot makes your plate overflowing. Our Karen did very well with the raffles, good on her. We then hit Solly’s and that lightened a few wallets but hey once in a blue moon it’s worth it. I do love that shop. We are once again doing a lamington drive as this was very popular last year and we plan to be bigger and better this year. We do not do as much fund raising as we would like as we understand the tough economic climate we are all in so we try to only do a few good ones a year and this is one!!! There will be an order form available from any of the committee members so c’mon buy up large, same price as last year. After a lot of deliberation the Committee has decided that we are willing to donate the $500 to the Lions for the Parade for the Pineapple Festival. We feel that as this day benefits the Community, it is the right thing to do as we are for the Community and try to help in any way. There were hiccups at the start, as you all know, but these got sorted out and it is now full steam ahead. So now it is each and everyone’s opportunity to recoup the money spent. We are HAVING A STALL at the Festival and are hoping for a pineapple theme, so trying for cakes, biscuits, scones, jams etc along the pine line. Plants are always a good seller as are sweets and such. So please, we ask you all to get behind us, the Seniors and make this a great stall for 2019. If anyone would be willing to give some time on the stall please contact us. Many hands mean less time for a few. We all like to be able to go around and have a look at the other stalls and grab a bite to eat. Magnetic Island trip is limited to 30 so if you want to be in, put your name down for October 15. Our invite to PCYC has had to be postponed until a later date due to conflicting events. Hopefully it will be rescheduled to end of October but will let you know once the date is settled and plan to invite Ingham and district also. Ok, brain has fogged up so time to go…….ciao 2019 PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL BAKING COMP. This year we are changing our regular Comp. slightly and opting for entries of pineapple decorated CAKES, COOKIES, CUPCAKES/ MUFFINS and SCONES only! Decorate them up and or the plates the scones are on for example, pineapple style! As the entries are sold after the Comp. to support local projects, it became apparent last year that most folk found it difficult to take home entries that included ingredients such as jellies and creams and cheesecakes that require refrigeration. So this year please avoid using cake coverings that require such refrigeration, as most people don't attend manned with eskies!. Normal icings are fine! The Comp. will have two judges and will offer a 1st Prize of $100, 2nd Prize of $50 and 3rd Prize of $25. The prizes are not for different categories but for the over all Comp. So...have some fun with your unique artistry and intuitive and join in the Comp.! Bring your entry straight to the demountable office, near the Hall and make sure your plate is marked with your name and number by 10am! Festival is Sept 21st. R.S.L.NEWS Rollingstone RSL hosted a service to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day on Sunday 18 August at the Balgal Beach Cenotaph. On this day we honour and commemorate all those who served in Vietnam, including the 521 Australians who died and more than 3,000 people who were wounded, injured or became ill as a result of the conflict. Rollingstone RSL would like to thank 9 Transport Squadron, 3rd Combat Service Support Battalion for supplying the Catafalque Party and to the bugler, Musician Joshua Young from 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment whose presence very much appreciated at the service. Vietnam Veterans Day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan. The Australians prevailed, but only after fighting in torrential rain for four hours. They were nearly overrun, but were saved by a timely ammunition resupply, accurate artillery fire from the nearby Australian base, and the arrival of reinforcements by armoured personnel carrier. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded, the largest number of casualties in one operation since the Australian task force had arrived a few months earlier. On 7th September RSL Rollingstone Auxiliary members will be holding a Members General Meeting commencing at 10.30 at Mystic Sands Golf Club. A committee will be elected so more news from the Auxiliary Committee in the near future. Coming soon - Rollingstone RSL Social Calendar! Commencing in September the club will be hosting events such as visits to: Mates4Mates and the Army Museum, golf days and a Christmas function. More information will be available soon. Fisherman’s Landing Fishing & Social Club News Hello Members and welcome. As I was not present at the July End of Month Club BBQ, I cannot relate any gossip or misdemeanours’ that occurred. I can report however, that Robert Pratt cooked for which we are grateful, Col Pace did his usual very much appreciated donation of food stuffs, the Ladies did great salads and all present had a fun night. The Members’ Draw did not go off again, number 49 was drawn owned by Clay Hutchinson and Chey Hinds who were not present so they missed out on the $75.00. The Jackpot is now $100.00 and it will be won at the Annual General Meeting/ End of Month BBQ on Friday 30 August. We will continue to draw numbers until it is won so be sure to be there to win the cash. Market Day on Saturday 3 August was not very well supported by the local community, probably due to other activities in the region including the festival in Ingham. Let’s hope the next event on Saturday 7 September is better supported. The results of a recent survey by Assistant-Secretary Kim Love of a sample of Club Members are in and sorted. Some of the results from a small number of Members are: Preferred location for weekends away, Cardwell 7, Lucinda 5, Ayr/Alva Beach 7, Kurrimine Beach 5 and Bowen 4. Other suggestions were: Honeymoon Bay WA, National Parks, Wunjunga, Balgal Beach, Mission Beach and Airlie Beach. An organized crabbing competition resulted in 10 for and 10 for a species-specific fishing competition. With guest speakers at the End of Month Club BBQs, 9 said Coast Guard, 9 said Fisheries and Wildlife, 5 said local tackle shop demos and 6 said demonstrations for children. 2 want a representative from Council, one wanted The Spice Girls and one wanted the Marine Park Authority. Premises for local Club functions, 4 said Golf Club, 1 said anywhere but the Golf Club with other suggestions being Fishermans Landing, somewhere with dancing and somewhere in Balgal. To the person who suggested my residence, that is a definite sorry NO! With Courses, 10 wanted First Aid/CPR, 3 wanted Boat Licence, 5 wanted boat trailer maintenance, 6 wanted navigation course. Other course suggestions were knot tying, fishing locations, use of radio, sounders and GPS. An interesting result and something for your Committee to consider. Thank you, Kim, for your effort and thanks to those Club Members who bothered to respond. Err, one question, who are The Spice Girls? By the time this edition reaches our Members, the Club Annual General Meeting will be over and hopefully a new Committee with many new faces who will carry the Club forward with new and exciting ideas for the next 12 months. We welcome new Club Members, Shannon Jenkins and Mark and Cheryl Currie. On behalf of the Committee and all Members, we wish you a warm welcome to your Club. The Annual Member for Hinchinbrook Inter-Club Fishing Challenge commenced on 1 August and will conclude on 1 September. So far, the weather has not been conducive to much fishing but we are still hopeful for a good result. Most Important! Write this down on the scrap of paper behind your dunny door. Saturday 28 September (NOT FRIDAY 27th) Club End of Month BBQ and Presentation Night at The Landing. This is a closed Club event, free for Members and all accompanied children. No visitors please but guests of Members are welcome and will be charged $20.00 per adult. A free courtesy bus will operate on the night. The event sponsor, Mr. Nick Dametto, MP, State Member for Hinchinbrook has accepted our invitation to attend and will do some of the presentation of prizes and trophies. The function will be in the form of our normal End of Month Club BBQ plus some extra food goodies. The Fishermans Landing Management has agreed to our request for a 9.30 pm bar closure on this night only. I know there have been some rumblings from Members who object to the venue closing rather early on our normal BBQ nights but your Committee does not run The Landing so cannot dictate to The Landing Manageress closure times which are at her discretion. On Saturday 12 October we shall again conduct the very popular Kids Fishing Classic which will be followed at lunch time by a sausage sizzle. This event has been supported by Townsville City Council through the Council Councillor Discretionary Grant Scheme organized by Councillor Margie Ryder who will be in attendance to award prizes. We thank Councillor Ryder for supporting this event and for her continued interest in promoting our little piece of Paradise. Dan our Fishing Events Coordinator has been on the hunt for some exceptional prizes and said he has picked up the scent of a few that will delight any child. This is an open competition which means Cyril that you do not need to be a member of any fishing club, anywhere; any child can come from beyond the Black Stump and still enter. This event is open to all children up to 16 years of age but the children must be accompanied and supervised at all times by an adult.
Dickie’s Fishing News
Well folks, we have finally had some good boating weather this last month which has allowed a goodly number of vessels to get out to sea, especially on the weekends plus those taking sickies during the week when the beautiful, calm seas were too much of a temptation. First of all; the whales have arrived in great numbers and there would hardly be a day when out boating around the islands or reefs that you don’t observe them. Just remember the boating rules in regards to these beautiful animals. We also had a couple of pods of whales in close to the shoreline just off the outer marker with one having 2 adults and a calf. What a great sight to behold. Okay, the good reports have been coming in of great catches of Bream and Winter Whiting being landed in Cattle, Ollera, Crystal and Rollingstone Creeks using live bait but also strips of squid or mullet. A great catch of Black Bream being boated on the bommie just to the south of Rollingstone Creek entrance. There have been various reports of Doggie and Spotted Mackeral being boated on the shoals out from the Microwave Tower and water treatment plant on the lower hills to the north of Balgal just to the north of Scrubby Creek. Excellent catches of legal crabs being potted in Crystal and Taylors Beach Creeks with the usual reports of crab pots being stolen or robbed. Some people just cannot help themselves, especially when some of these pots cost $40.00 or more. Good boating conditions have allowed great catches of Spanish Mackeral and Queenfish out around Rattlesnake and Herald Islands using floating pilchards or trawled wolf herring, also, orange and white plugs trawled at around 5 or 6 meters deep at 4 to 5 knots. Havanah, Fly, Esk and Brisk Islands are producing good catches of Coral Trout and Sweetlip with a couple of GTs being boated and released. The shoals out from Justin Street camping area and Mystic Sands also have produced good catches of Grunter and Nannygai using live and dead baits. Winter Whiting and Bream are being caught off the local beaches using Yabbies or Mantis Prawns. Well, that is it for this month, hope you all have safe boating and tight lines. Don’t forget to put in a trip sheet to Townsville or Ingham Coast Guard or at the least tell someone responsible where you are proceeding to and what time you will return. You can leave your out of date flares and EPIRBS at The Landing for safe disposal…….Regards, Dickie. P21 Thank you, Dickie for another great insight into our local area fishing, if that doesn’t get our local fishos kicking their boat trailer tyres in preparation for an outing then nothing will. Finally, Cyril, what is a Shiatzu? No, not a breed dog, it is a zoo withP21 no animals…..Thanks Billy……..Until next month, Ninger

Gidday Rollingstone, Every 12 months or so they run this 2-day meeting called an “Officer in Charge Conference”. It’s a thing where all the OIC’s of the stations in the Townsville Police District get together and talk shi… no not really. We meet and compare notes on issues that effect the District as a whole and other issues that are specific to each Station. And then there are guest speakers on different topics as well. The whole thing is chaired by our Chief Superintendent – he’s a good man – not all powerful, but he does get consulted by God for any tricky policy matters. And he’s perfected that stone-wall, hard as concrete, dead-pan look that’s been known to make grown men lose control of their bottom lip and eventually their bladder – doesn’t have to say a word, just stares at you – the sort of bloke who commands a room just by being in it. Anyway…part of the Conference involves each OIC addressing the audience and giving a factual run-down on 4 or 5 specific topics relating to their stations and divisions – requires a little bit of research, some facts and figures (it’s the Government – they LOVE figures and statistics) and then the ability to answer a few questions from the Chief. I’d forgot about that bit. In my defence, I’d had a pretty torrid couple of days leading up to the Conference – but no excuses. Then it was my turn. Standing at the lectern in front of 60 other coppers (who WERE prepared) and staring at the one man who looked like he could turn me into a pillar of salt, I did the only thing I could think of – I threw myself under the bus and confessed that I had nothing. They all laughed…except for one. And with bum puckering, hands sweating and mouth as dry as an Arab’s sandal, I did the only other thing I could – I waffled on like a maniac. I prattled on with all sorts of dribble from crime trends to traffic movements and budget considerations to station maintenance. And the whole time, he sat…motionless…and stared at me – didn’t flinch, smirk, nod, blink, burp, fart…nothing. He knew what I was doing. Once I’d finally exhausted my knowledge of almost completely useless and irrelevant information, I looked back at our fearless and intimidating leader…and again, nothing. Then he slowly leaned forward and instead of giving me the rebore that I knew I deserved, he threw me a bone. “Goughy, we all know you’re retiring soon. What advice have you got for an officer who wants to work in a small station?” He asked me a question that he knew I could answer – so away I went. “There’s a bit more to it than meets the eye Boss. You can’t go into a small station or a small community and expect to just “police” it. That’s obviously part of it but you have to be prepared to do a lot more. A community is entitled to look for leadership from their police, counsel, advice on just about everything, whether it’s related to police work or not. They want confidence from you – not only that you know how to do your job but that you can keep their confidence – that they can confide in you and feel safe. And to do that, they have to know you – you have to let them know you. If all you want to do is “police” a community, don’t waste your time in a small town. A good partner is a big thing. You need someone you can trust and who trusts you. Someone you can confide in and discuss things with openly and honestly. Someone who has faith in you. You need to be able to communicate with that person – it won’t work otherwise. You need to KNOW your partner has your back – and won’t stab you in it. It’s not an easy ask, but it’s important. They’re hard to find. And it’s about ownership. In a bigger station you can probably afford to turn up and do your job and then go home. That doesn’t work out there. I’ve always tried to own just about everything in my Division – my highway, my roads, my creek and my beach, all the scrub is mine. But more importantly all the people are mine too – every grandparent, auntie and uncle and mum and dad, especially every kid there – I like to think I can pull on responsibility for all of them – to keep them safe, to make them feel safe – to be there if they need me. That’s why my mobile phone number is probably the worst kept secret in the history of ‘worst kept secrets’. Anybody who needs it, has it. That’s the other side of “ownership” – to a large degree you have to let the community own you. That’s what I’ve tried to do with Rollingstone. And I’ve been criticised for it – I get that it isn’t everybody’s way of doing business – but that’s how I’ve done it – and I wouldn’t change a thing And I think you have to be prepared to step out of the box sometimes. Police work isn’t seen as a ‘soft’ profession. We’re not known for handing out hugs – well maybe you guys aren’t – but I think maybe I am. Being a copper in a small place means giving a kick in the arse if that’s what’s needed – but it also means putting your arms around someone who desperately needs it…letting them cry or grieve or just complain…then dusting them off and getting them moving again. It’s working by yourself, getting called out a 2am, asking your family and friends to just ‘understand’, being part of where you live and work and raise your family…and trying to remember that most people are just trying to do their best. A few seconds of silence that felt like an hour…“Do you really believe that Goughy…are people just trying to do their best?” “Yes Boss, I think the majority of people are.” And with the slightest of smiles…“Nice work mate…...Who’s next?”…..Stay safe…..Goughy Simply this is Alcoholics Anonymous Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with others that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism. Paluma in the Clouds - Colwyn Campbell Signs of Spring are all around us. After some bleak, wintry days the early morning mist clears to mild, sunny days. Faint perfumes of flowers, unseen in the rainforest waft in the air. Many birds are nesting: others such as Satin Bower-birds are still in courtship mode, their noisy activities being heard in many gardens as they construct their Bowers. The calls of migratory birds. not heard for nearly a year are now mingling with the songs of the locals. Trees are erupting with bright new leaves: a hundred hues of green are everywhere as bright, light new growth mingles with the older, darker leaves. The new growth appears in all shapes, colours, sizes and forms. Some pale soft leaves droop in tiered clusters like chandeliers while other are upright, like candles. Cascades of colour, reds, pinks, salmon, bronze, copper and pale green denote the new growth on other trees. Vibrant colour is returning to Paluma gardens as azaleas bloom profusely with shrubs covered in pink, red, mauve or white flowers, while tea-trees also are densely covered in their dainty pink, red or white flowers. Hibiscus and lateflowering Tibouchinas add to the colour. Townsville City Council’s Water Smart initiative has been welcomed by Paluma gardeners and many have taken advantage of the offers of water-saving devices, sprinkler systems, worm farms, mulch, drought-tolerant shrubs and trees and other means of managing healthy gardens with minimum water usage. Bird-watching visitors to the famous Golden Bowerbird site near Birthday Creek have been delighted to see the bird at his Bower, decorating it with tiny flowers and sprigs of moss. Nearby, the Tooth-billed Bowerbird is busy laying leaves, underside up, as his performance platform. Both birds have an amazing repertoire of calls from sistrum-like rattles to warbling trills. Like ventriloquists, they throw the sound so that it seems to come from all around. The annual Paluma Push cycle race was held on Sunday, 21st July. After a wet start to the week, the day was sunny much to the relief of riders, volunteers and organisers. The newly graded road to the Dam made a very fast track for the first section of the race, but the remaining terrain was rugged going for the 370 cyclists who participated. This year there were no serious injuries, the only incident being the attempted hijacking of a cycle by a kangaroo. The overall winners of the Push were: Nathan Sandford (Competition 70km, male); Laura Dunstan (Competition 70km female); Travis Antoney (Intermediate 53km, male); Meredith Watkins, (Intermediate 53km, female); Cameron Mellifont (Recreation 42km, male); Imogen Blacklock (recreation 42km, female). For other place-getters and winners of various categories, please check the website of Townsville Rockwheelers. Restoration work on Mount Spec Road is now completed. Spraying and seeding of the stabilised slopes was carried out at the end of July and soon tinges of green should appear as the seeds germinate. Engineers are carrying out surveys to determine possible future stabilisation work. Remember to check out our website: Paluma.org. Colwyn Campbell

Avoid paying extra fees for bills you receive in the mail Companies may be charging you extra to send your bills by mail. This fee may be charged by the business to cover their costs to print and post your bill. If you want to avoid this fee, there are some options that might work for you. The simplest way is to receive your bills electronically – by email or via the company’s app. Check the company’s website or contact the company to find out how you can change to online billing. If you are not able to receive bills electronically, find out if you are eligible for an exemption from paper billing fees. Companies have different rules about when they will give exemptions. Some companies will give an exemption if customers: Are seniors Are registered for a concession Receive income support Are on a hardship program Don’t have internet access. Contact each of your providers and ask if you’re eligible for an exemption from paper bill fees, and how to apply. If you have friends or family who may be eligible for an exemption, let them know who to contact and how they can apply, so they can avoid paying extra fees for paper bills as well. If you have checked with a provider that you are eligible for an exemption, but are having trouble getting your exemption processed, please contact your local Fair Trading or Consumer Affairs agency for help. For more information about paper billing, visit www.consumerlaw.gov.au/paperbilling or contact your state or territory’s consumer protection agency

Request an Exemption From Fees
If you are not able to receive bills electronically, you may be eligible for an exemption, so you don’t get charged these fees in the future. To request an exemption: Contact each company that sends you a bill. Ask for an exemption from paper bill fees. Ask about their exemption process - For example, do you need to fill out a form? Can you apply over the phone? Do you need to provide evidence of Centrelink benefits? Follow the process set out by each company. P29
Rollingstone and District Lions Club Inc. G’Day Rollingstone, Well it is less than 4 weeks until the Pineapple Festival. The Committee has been working tirelessly in preparation to the biggest day on our Calendar. As usual it is designed to be great family day. There will be live music throughout the day, plenty of stalls selling everything and a variety of food outlets. Games for the kids and Adults alike all designed to make this a great day. You are more than welcome to invite your friends and rellies from town to enjoy our biggest fun day of the year. As usual, the Pineapple Festival Event is free entry for everyone, however; gold coin donation is optional and all donation will go to the Charity of choice of the Organisers. Come along and enjoy an action packed day. Last Tuesday morning at the Rollingstone School, we provided a healthy breakfast for all the students. The Junior Leos did most of the work in the preparation and serving of the food. It was a great morning and the kids really appreciated all the food. The Junior Leos Program is the brain child of Lion John Muller. It really gives the kids a taste of Responsibility and working as a team. Hopefully some of the Junior Leos will go on to become Leos when they graduate to High School. Our Club is lucky enough to be given the opportunity to cater for clubs and organisations in Townsville itself, this goes to show that Rollingstone Lions is becoming well known outside our Community. I hope to see you all at the Pineapple Festival and remember; where there is a need. there is a Lion, we are there to assist. Don’t hesitate to ring me on 0412 394 450……….Dowie
