Is your PC is slowing down to a near standstill with the smallest tasks and activities taking far too long to complete? Or maybe you are noticing that every so often your PC is not responding as quickly as it used to? Here are 4 simple steps to help you speed up your computer and save you time, without the need for you to become a technical expert. Whilst you have always have the option of learning a few tricks of the trade from computer experts or friends with more technical knowledge if you follow these 4 simple steps you will be able to speed up your computer and to keep it up and running at a higher speed. These steps will work for Windows 7 and Vista users as well as Windows XP users. 1. Free up Disk Space Whenever your PC is running slow, the first thing to check is whether this could be caused by your disk space being overcrowded. Freeing up your disk space is one of the quickest and easiest ways to speed up your computer and make it perform at an optimum speed, and the best way to do this is to use a disk cleanup tool. Although disk cleanup tool works differently for different operating systems, the basic parameters for working with a disk clean up wizard are very similar in all of the Windows 7, XP or Vista operating systems. The utility can be accessed using any of the methods listed below. * Click Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup * In Windows Explorer or My Computer, right-click the disk in which you want to free up space, click Properties, click the General tab, and then click Disk Cleanup. * Click Start > Run and in the Open box type cleanmgr and click OK Once the utility is open, use the drop down menu arrow to select the drive you want to clean and Disk Cleanup will analyze the selected drive to find out how much space can be freed. Once the analysis of the drive is complete, you will be presented with a list of file categories that you can select to delete files, which will free up space on your hard drive and improve the speed of your computer. 2. Speed up your access to data The process of disk defragmentation can abruptly slow down your system. Whenever any file is fragmented, the computer takes more time to search for files on the hard disk. As the time required to find files takes longer this slows down your PC speed. You can use the Disk Defragmenter tool in System Tools to defragment your files and folders,
which essentially means tidy them up and store them in one place so that your computer can find them more quickly and efficiently. 3. Use the Error Checking utility In addition to running the disk clean up and disk defragmenter tools you can also use the Error Checking utility that comes together with your Windows 7, Vista or XP operating system. The Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) utility checks volumes for problems and then attempts to repair any that it finds. To use the Error Checking utility you need to be logged on as an Administrator and you can run this from My Computer, from Windows Explorer or by using the command line prompt. 4. Check for Spyware Spyware is a constant threat to your computer and can easily slow down your speed just when you need it the most. You should consider installing a PC safety scan from Windows updates, or use another type of anti-virus and anti-spyware program to protect your personal information from being hacked. This will protect your information and will also speed up your computer by stopping and removing unwanted programs from your PC.
