One of the original purebred dog breeds in the modern world is the American Bulldog. Since the 1500's they have been a symbol of England with their forbearing and brave nature. Puppy training can be quite a job if your dog is especially stubborn or adventurous, as American Bulldogs are also known to quite often be stubborn. Selecting Your Puppy If you do decide you would like an American Bulldog puppy a thing to note is the amount of time and energy needed for this breed. There is a high mortality rate amongst newborn puppies and they are vulnerable to many health problems. When choosing a puppy it should be at least eight weeks old before it is removed from its mother. Assess its temperament as friendly and not aggressive. Bring your new puppy to the vet for check up to ensure it is in good health and is not suffering from any number of puppy health issues particularly ears and noses. Begin your training regime the second you get home. This should begin with socialization to people and other dogs. This will help avoid aggression issues in the future. At 10 weeks puppy training can begin. American Bulldog Puppy Training Basic house training is the thing to begin with as soon as the puppy is old enough. Crate training is strongly recommended, as this breed can be willful at a young age. It is advised to be at home with your pup as much as possible during this initial stage. House breaking will take slightly longer but once trained you will have a dog that will respect it home environment. Once the basics are in place you can begin creating and establishing the fact that you are the alpha pack leader. Refrain from allowing your pup to sit on the sofa and definitely do not let your pup sleep in your bed. Training not to bite is essential and this begins with giving them lots of toys to chew. When they do bite or nip make a clear whining sound as this teaches them that it hurts. Use your crate as much as possible and lengthen the time your puppy will stay in there. At approximately 6 - 12 months the training should move into the obedience phase. Commands such as coming back when called, sitting, staying, and not pulling on the lead are the focus now. American Bulldogs are intelligent animals and will pick up this commands quickly, however they may be resistant to them as they are stubborn natured. Using Training To Protect Your Puppy
Puppies will investigate and explore everything they possess an innate curiosity. It is imperative that you train your puppy not to chase cars. Teach them to wait at the curb before crossing the road and not to run away from you in public. Be sure it is safe to do so before taking them off the lead and that they are trained to return when called. Defiance within this breed needs to be addressed, as there are many risks associated with them. To train an American Bulldog properly may seem much more difficult compared to other dog breeds but the rewards are massive. They are one of the loyal and attentive dogs you will ever own. Establish who is boss early on and they will stubbornly be at your side following your commands for a very long time.
