You Should Buy an iPad Tablet. This is a bit of a rant; I have developed an abnormal interest in this device and openly advertise it to my readers. This review is primarily a means by which I am venting about how sweet this thing is, punctuated occasionally with a gripe about how Apple and I diverge on how to create a flawless gadget. Make no mistake about it: the iPad is sexy, and remarkable, but it is not flawless. It is substantially flawless, however, which makes it good enough for me to recommend to you! Having spent countless hours testing and experimenting with Apple's iPad since its release, it is easy to see how the gadget has stirred such a commotion. My observation is that there are basically two camps of iPad users - those that cannot be more excited with their long-awaited toys, and those who are actually disappointed for one reason or another, with the tablet. These people strangely tend to either love it or hate it. I am hopeful that I can enlighten you with a sober review and give you some practical input on the product, as opposed to what I have seen out there thus far (people who do not even have it, yet are producing bold, illucid, sweeping and arrogant claims). My goal is to outline the features and benefits, and downfalls and flaws for you, so you do not make an uninformed, or worse yet, a misinformed decision, about your purchase of the iPad tablet. Prior to the launch of the iPad, foul rumors circulated that the product would be based on the operating platform that both the ipone and/or itouch both used. That was a fright. Apple knew however that would simply be a bit of an end to their image. Although the iPad still seems very similar to these gadgets, you will see the difference once you get up close and personal with it. Only four more apps are capable of running on the iPad (24 total) than with the iTouch (which permits only 20, total). Though the iPad is not without flaws, and though it is not a complete laptop or desktop substitution by any stretch of the imagination, this gizmo far supercedes the stigma of "the glorified iTouch". Test it out, and you will instantly see the difference. This device is remarkable and breathtaking. One more point of clarification - the iPad is also NOT a "laptop killer," nor is it "Kindle killer" however, it is a fantastic e-reader that will have an longlasting influence on the existence of digital books and electronic publications. Consider the iPad more of a "better option" with more functionality than the Kindle, and other e-readers, like the nook, etc. The first time you remove the iPad from the box, and peel back its protective wrapper, you will not be able to resist yourself. As an owner of several ipods, an iphone, an iMac, and a MacBook Pro, I know - this gadget was by far the most irresistible I have encountered, by far. The iPad is the most addictive and intoxicating of all the toys that Apple produces, and maybe, overall in the consumer-electronics market. When you remove it from its box for the first time, you'll find yourself peering into unlimited possibilities - the reflection of yourself in the glossy wrapping of the most innovative consumer
electronic gadget on the market. Handling this product will feel like you are handling an infant: delicate and precious; you will notice the scent of the tablet - likeness to a new car smell, only for electronics: the smell of possibility, opportunity, and creativity. The Company has done well to entice and entrance your senses with their addicting gizmo. Weight Taking it into hand, immediately you will feel the weight of the tablet. It's likely several ounces heavier than you had imagined, especially for such a slender piece of hardware. The iPad feels luxurious, demanding, powerful, and sturdy. Does it not? It has been said that the tablet weighs as much as a 400-page magazine. The reason the iPad is so heavy: its batteries. The iPad has a remarkable 10 hour lifespan, with wifi. However, there are some exceptions; for example, the demanding act of streaming video will reduce the life, slightly. Additional weight factors: the iPad's glass screen. This adds a fair bit of weight, but does a tremendous job of preventing scratches. Gosh it's nice to look at. Once you do start to smother your iPad with affection however, it will show. Your finger prints will probably smudge all up and down sideways, so be sure to keep some cloth wipes nearby to prevent a dirty accumulation! The iPad comes equipped with an Oleophobic coating engineered to combat smears, streaks and oily fingerprints. (While it works great at first keep in mind it is not meant to last forever!) You will see though, that Apple's repellant is no match for your dirty hands unfortunately; that is, if you were as addicted to the device as I was and could not put it down. Comparatively speaking, the iPad handled my greasy paws far better than the iPod Touch, but the iTouch does not have the feature. If you wanted to wash your hands several times an hour to reduced the natural oil present on your fingertips, you would probably completely dry your skin out, but you iPad will be less grimy. Ultimately, it will not be too noticeable regardless. Beef Perhaps one beef I do have with the the development of this beaut: the greed pertaining to the pursuit of their minimalist theme. Look at this thing; it's got 75% of it's room free once opened! To start, let's nix the whopping margin around the perimeter. It's a complete waste, and if properly used, could improve efficiency to the nth degree. Furthermore, look at the mileage in the console between the apps themselves. This is referred to as padding, and it is absurd. We are limited to 24 apps, and this is because the iPad is laid out foolishly. The reason this bothers me: the apple iPad could have been an absolutely productivity powerhouse if it allowed more action in the way of further apps. Moving on; regarding the apps, an update released in the fall brought n interesting new feature: will "folders". This allows you, basically, to group relate apps into a folder. Ie: social, music, or travel. You can't access the app with one tap anymore, but you can in two, and they're organized; net, net, it's okay by me. The apple iPad is, strategically, a bellwether for apple. In other words, it has provided a platform upon which the mammoth tech company can again swallow a few more competitors and add another billion in annual revenues (because let's not forget about the advertising capabilities this facilitates; of course this is another story altogether). It is a wildly popular handheld device which has again transformed Apple and the consumer electronics market. Sales are up and the stock soared months following the release. You have to wonder however, where the company was aiming in their release. Were they trying to kill the
Kindle or the netbook. The answer: neither. At first apple meant for us to turn away from the netbook given the iPad'a ability to easily browse the web, email, watch videos and view photos however, you can not even engage in basic word processing with the stock iPad model. You need to download the iWork app separately! Alternatively, the same goes for the kindle. You need to download the buy an iPadiBook app separately as well. Frankly, I'm a little confused myself on this. I cat figure out wait apple wants their product to be exactly. If you do have intentions of using the iPad for work, and plan to be typing extensively, you will want to get a real keyboard. The virtual keyboard is somewhat limiting and is not ideal for this type of work. The keyboard dock is superb however.
