Stress is something that we all get from time to time. Most people associate business stress with people in high profile occupations like doctors or lawyers. However, many other professionals get stressed out and web translators are no exception. Much of the stress that translators feel is similar to other professions, but some of it is unique to the translation industry. Some of the stress that translators have to deal with includes meeting deadlines, finding work, getting paid from delinquent clients, working by yourself, etc. No matter why the stress appears or where it comes from, it's important to realize that translators do indeed face considerable amounts of stress. When translators feel stress, some choose to do something about it, while others, for whatever reason, decide that it's natural and that doing something about it is a sign of weakness. The worst thing to do is to do nothing. Stress can sometimes help motivate us to get a job done and get moving on something, but too much stress, and not doing anything about it, will only cause problems and those problems can be compounded considerably with more and more stress. So what can a translator do to combat stress? The first thing is to recognize what the cause of the stress is. By better understanding where the stress is coming from, it will be easier to take appropriate actions to combat the stress. The next thing to do is take a step back and look at all the options you have to deal with a particular problem, and how different solutions can relieve stress. For example, suppose you are stressed out because you have a deadline that is looming and you're not sure if you have enough time to finish the job. Well, instead of working furiously and continuing to be stressed out, take a step back for a minute and look for other solutions. Can you outsource part of the job to another translator? Can you call the client and get an extension? Looking at additional options will help you relieve stress that can build up. In addition to coming up with different solutions to stressful problems you may face, it is important to remember to take a break from your work on a daily basis. You can't sit in front of your computer all day working on translations without ever taking a break. Take time to exercise, go for a walk, read a book, or call a friend. Doing these types of things will help keep your mind clear and give you renewed energy, while helping to keep your stress levels low.
