I am an 18 year old with a passion for skateboarding. Born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, arguably the skateboarding capital of Europe, it did not take me long to lose myself into this form of self expression. Until recently, a board was a board, and a broken one nearly useless to me. I would never throw any out, due to what I believe was sentimental attatchment - your boards are chapters of your life. Sometimes I would look at the pile of used boards in my room and recall the people I skated with at the time, the injuries sustained, the laughs, and adventures through my beautiful city. At IED’s One Year Global Design Course, when assigned our projects, I realized that I could make my used boards something more than just a fragment of memories - I could create beauty out of something currently destined for a landfill. This fueled me to complete as many projects during my time in IED in relation to the recycling of my old boards. For those of you with shorter attention spans than mine:
i combine skateboarding with design.
what is shade?
Shade is a fictional brand centered on handmade products created with recycled skateboards whose image upholds my views towards skateboarding expressed above. Its logo is used throughout this portfolio to accompany shots of the following projects to advertise them as promotional pictures of products, such as they would be in a legitimate job in the design industry.

BY SKATERS While the smallest of my projects, the most time I’ve spent working was invested into the skate shades. I began this project with no knowledge of working cutting and sanding machinery. Trial and error played a long and tedious role in the development of skill.
15
FOR SKATERS Precision was crucial – one miscalculation in a cut was enough to ruin a prototype. Unsymmetrical cuts and angles of hinges would result in an uneven and crooked pair of sunglasses.

a less painful way of taking a board to the face
18 Several substances were used to aesthetically enhance the appearance of the skateboard wood. Several coats of teak oil were applied to saturate the flattened color scheme from the board’s abuse. When dried, numerous coats of varnish were painted on to create shine.

This project was by far the largest in scale and biggest consumer of my supply of old boards, using four to complete. Taking advantage of the pre-existing holes on skateboard decks, I drilled them into painted planks of wood, making a 90 degree angle at the intersection of the bottom and back support as can be seen with a combination of steel plates, wood, nails, and bolts.
42 I found a broken swivel chair in my house. I dismantled and tossed everything except for the baseplate and wheels. Epoxy was used on the baseplate of the swivel chair to connect to my structure of boards. To give some life back into these beaten up decks, I varnished them, creating a protective layer above the boards while also adding an element of shine. This shine juxtaposes the concept of the appearance of a used board, as they then resemble a hybrid of the two: the scratches of dead board with the glow of a new one. This is a metaphor to Shade’s purpose: making something destined for a landfill seem new again through repurposing.
