SAY IT SEXY BY VIRNA DEPAUL Reviewed by: Deb Lyons Genre: New Adult Heat Level: Hot

This is a great easy read!! I really enjoyed the alternating first person narration. I felt very connected to the story and characters. When I finished with Say It Sexy I went right to look for the next book in this series. I will definitely read this author again!

ENTHRALL BY VANESSA FEWINGS Reviewed by: Jo-Ann Genre: Erotic Romance Heat Level: Erotic

This is an enchanting story, that keeps on the edge of something. This is the story of Mia, Richard and Cameron, all of them were hurt and are hurting at some part of the story. Mia wants to be loved by Richard and he can’t commit to loving her because it hurts too much Cameron is the shrink with the answers to their issues. The story is a beautiful tale of love fought and lost of acceptance and sharing. Beautiful, erotically charged with sensuality. Once you finish reading book1, you can’t stop yourself for reaching for the rest of this tale.

ICE CREAM MAN BY EILEEN DREYER Reviewed by: Patty Nobles Genre: Contemporary Romance Heat Level: Mild

The Ice Cream Man, is the latest book by talented author Eileen Dreyer which is a rerelease of a previous novel she wrote under the name Kathleen Korbel. The Ice Cream Man is a delightful tale of two people who have been beat down in their lives, but somehow over melting bomb pops they find a way to heal each other. This book is a funny fast paced read, and I recommend it highly.

SINNER’S GROVE BY A.B. MICHAELS Reviewed by: Avonna Kershey Genre: Romantic Suspense Heat Level: Hot

Sinner’s Grove is the first book in A.B. Michael’s Sinner’s Grove contemporary romantic suspense series. Plotted with the past interwoven with the present and a mystery that spans generations as well as present day sabotage and criminals. I cannot say enough about this book. It was hard to put down and I never truly knew which way the plot was going to twist. The writer has a plot that is interesting in the past and present story lines on all levels. The romance was very believable and the sex was not gratuitous.

PERSEPHONE’S ORCHARD BY MOLLY RINGLE Review by: Chantal Grosse Genre: Paranormal Romance Heat Level: Hot

Brilliant take on a Greek myth. Once I started to read it I wanted to know how it ended and to see the authors take on an age old myth. Can’t wait to read the next book to see what trouble they can get in to.

THE COWBOY BY VANESSA VALE Reviewed by: Patty Nobles Genre: Erotic Romance Heat Level: Erotic

The Cowboy by Vanessa Vale has heat, intrigue, and high stakes emotion all wrapped up in this incredible novel. Emily has come to the Montana Territory as a mail order bride with the hopes of finding a safe place in the world. Wyatt Blake is a hardworking rancher who has married Emily sight unseen, but he knew what he asked for when inquiring about a bride, and upon meeting her he was not disappointed. The sparks begin to fly between man and wife immediately and Wyatt quickly learns that his wife only has one skill which pleases him immensely.

The complicated love story of Mary and Dante was so believable and enticing that I couldn’t put the book down! I found Dante’s complex character so interesting and remarkable. The struggle with Dante’s family, especially at the end, had me sincerely stressed with how things would work without destroying Mary’s career and reputation. Great story that I will definitely read again after I have checked out the other books in her Club series.

This book was such a whirlwind of a read that I couldn’t put it down and had to finish it the same night I started. From the very first page, I was instantly drawn in and could tell that I was in for a good one. Elaine and Dr.Vincent have such an intense connection with such dark pasts that the story was about both of them finding the path to be healed. It was such a steamy, intriguing read that I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next books!

EXPOSING JUSTICE BY ADRIENNE GIORDANO & MISTY EVANS Reviewed by: Marianne Genre: Romantic Suspense Heat Level: Hot

I just finished Exposing Justice by Adrienne Giordano and Misty Evans. What a great read! It has all the elements of a good romantic suspense. I found myself really falling for Brice. He was such an unexpected alpha male. His relationship with Hope really brought out all the great character development that I have come to expect (and enjoy) from Adrienne Giordano. Hope was very likable and her office situation was more than relatable!

THE HIGH BRIDGE BY ELIZABETH HAYSMONT Reviewed by: Rebecca Smiles Genre: Paranormal Romance Heat Level: Hot

Their paths cross in a small Colorado town when she comes to expose a haunted hotel room. After more bad luck all around Sandra learns to Believe and Monty learns to open is heart. There is plenty of yearning and learning, you feel the emotions for each of them and I couldn’t put the book down. I would highly recommend this book for any fan of romantic suspense who is looking for a different twist on the ghost story.

SHARE THE MOON BY SHARON STRUTH Reviewed by: Sarah Lindert Genre: Contemporary Romance Heat Level: Mild

The story is definitely a “second chance” at romance, but that is just a small part of the plot. Great characters, who all in their own way all play important parts in the main and secondary stories. Most importantly, the characters are relatable and not contrived. Sophie is one of the best fictional characters I’ve read about in a long time. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Looking forward to read the next book in the series!

A very sweet and warm heart felt love story that began with a marriage due to pregnancy and eventually the loss of a baby and depression on the way & stubbornness which in turn the marriage started to crumble. The author has successfully written the story with such clarity & many interesting events in the book that makes readers like me not to lose interest or site of the story. This is the first I have read from Sierra Avalon and have to say though it was short it was really interesting. I loved the whole aspect of Nic Rayne and what he shows to people. On the outside he is your typical rock star yet when a woman like Harper gets close is so different. The chemistry between them starts as love/hate yet there is so much more. Sierra did such a good job in hiding his real feelings there was a point where I was like ugh disgusting. Can`t wait for the other stories in the band they definitely have something going there. 14

FEVER: A BALLROOM ROMANCE, BOOK ONE BY TONYA PLANK Reviewed by: Nicole L. Genre: Contemporary Romance Heat Level: Mild

Loved the story that I stayed up until I finished it that night and bought the next one in the morning. Rory is such a developed character that I feel like I know her, like a reader should. I cheered for her when she left her idiot boyfriend so she could continue prioritizing her passions. I hoping she will leave her job next because she doesn’t receive any satisfaction from that. I love how dancing helps her feel connected to her dad. I just love her and her story and can’t wait to finish the next two!

THE LAIR (A SINNER’S GROVE NOVEL) BY A.B. MICHAELS Reviewed by: Laura Nelson Genre: Romantic Suspense

What follows is one of the best romantic suspense novels I have read in a long time. The subject matter makes for uncomfortable reading and is not for the faint of heart but you’ll not be disappointed. The author captivated me with her writing and I felt as if I was in Italy with the characters. Just when you think you have it all worked out another layer is uncovered and blows that theory out of the water! This was the first book I’ve read by this author and will certainly not be my last!

e stepped forward, but hesitated to touch her. Instead, he pushed down on the bumper to make his car bounce slightly beneath her. “Hey! What are you doing in here?” Her eyes opened, light blue and eerily familiar, they focused on his face, rounded in surprise. “Oh!” She scrambled into a sitting position and used her arms and legs to push herself into a corner. He stepped back, not wanting to terrorize her.“Who are you? What are you doing in here?” “Oh, shit.” He raised an eyebrow. “Get out of my car.” She looked around, looked at him, took in the rows of neatly organized camping gear lining the shelves on the wall. Two bicycles and a motorcycle were parked in the garage space to her right. A rake, shovel and broom were hung up by pegs on the wall to her left. He wanted her out, and she appeared to be taking inventory. What was she looking for? “Get. Out.” She looked straight at him. “I’m a time traveler.” “Not funny. Just get out of the car.” She moaned and wrapped her hands around the sides of her neck, clearly upset. “Look. I’m sorry, Luke. That came out wrong. I know this sounds totally crazy, but you have to listen to me.” “How do you know my name? Have you been following me?” “Ummm, yeah. But I swear it’s not what you think. I’m not some crazy stalker. Uh, well, I guess I was, technically, stalking you today. But I don’t normally do that.” Her cheeks turned bright pink. Was she blushing? “Get out.” “No, no, no. Listen. This is real. I told you. I’m a time traveler. I came from the future. Well, no, actually, I’m from the past.Which sounds confusing.” She moved her hands from her neck to her temples, rubbing there as if that was going to help her convince him. “Ugh. Look. Whatever. It doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters 24

is that I was sent here specifically to find you. Luke Lawson. They sent me here to find you.” Great. She was a real nutjob. “Get out of my car. Now. Before I call the police.” “Listen to me. I’m here to stop a global disaster, and I need your help.” “Yeah, right.” He backed toward the door that led to his kitchen. He could lock her in the garage and call the police. They would come get her and take her to a psychiatric hospital. Somewhere she could get help. She obviously needed help. She lifted one arm to beseech him to listen to her, but didn’t move from her position in the corner.“Please. Listen. I really do need your help.” “Okay.” She wasn’t bloody or hurt. No obvious beating. No scrapes or bruises. Her hands were clean, her skin flawless. Her eyes were clear, her voice soft. She didn’t look like she was in danger, hurt, or in trouble. Which left crazy. Shaking his head, he pulled his cell phone from his jacket pocket and dialed 9-1-1. The operator answered immediately, her voice calm and commanding, like a fifty-year-old mother who’d been around the block a few times and had survived everything from childbirth to cancer. “This is 9-1-1. What is the nature of your emergency?” “There is an intruder in my home.” “Are you in danger?” “No.” “Is the intruder armed?” “I don’t think so.” “Just one? A single individual? “Yes.” “Do you know who the intruder is?” “No.” “Are you in the home now?” “No. In the garage.” “Do not go into the house. Do not approach the intruder. I want you to go to a neighbor’s house. Somewhere safe. I will dispatch a car to your location. What is your name and address, sir?” Luke stared at the woman who had scooted forward, her knees bent

over the fender, her small feet dangled a solid two feet from the garage floor. She was probably all of five foot two. She didn’t look dangerous. Or crazy. She looked completely sane. She wasn’t panicking or running. She just looked up at him with those big blue eyes and whispered so the operator wouldn’t hear her. “Please, Luke. Don’t.At least listen to me first. I know about M-6. This isn’t a joke. I’m not crazy.” Did she just say M-6? “Sir? Are you still there?” The 9-1-1 operator’s voice was calm but insistent in his ear. “Yes, I’m still here.” The woman scooted out of his vehicle, stood and turned to face him. Holy shit. She was smoking hot. But her expression was serious. Too serious. “Your number is blocked. I need your name and location so I can send a car.” He looked into a pair of pleading eyes and knew he couldn’t do it. “Never mind. I’m sorry I called. False alarm. It’s my cousin. I didn’t know she was coming over.” He hung up before the operator could badger him for details. His number was always blocked. The GPS, permanently disabled. He didn’t like the idea of being tracked like a prisoner with an ankle monitor. “Thank you.” She smiled and put her hands on her hips. Her pale blue T-shirt read, Never Tired, Always Wired and featured a cartoon coffee cup. She was small, as he’d suspected, and barely reached his shoulder. She looked like she’d just come from the gym, complete with yoga pants that hugged a small but nicely curved backside. Not exactly a dire threat to someone of his size. “Don’t thank me yet.” He turned to face her, arms crossed, and blocked the doorway into his home. “Who are you and why were you in my car?”

vanessa VALE INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR:

1

. Why do you write in this genre? What drew you to it?

I have also written romantic comedy and romantic suspense, but I enjoy writing erotic because of the intensity of the emotions between the characters. I chose historical westerns because I lived in Montana for five years and love the Wild West. 2. What is your usual writing routine. I write when my kids are in school. I love sprinting— writing for a solid thirty minutes without stopping. That’s the way to get the word count in and it always surprises me what I write when I’m not thinking about it, just ‘being’ the characters. I’m a VERY fast typer, so I try to get over 1000 words in thirty minutes. My record? 1300. It doesn’t always come out that fast, but when it does, I know the characters really well! 3. Do you have any pets? I used to have a dog, Fred. I got her (yes, her!) in college and she was my sidekick for fourteen years. She’s gone now and I’m now an empty nester where a dog is concerned. My son does have a hamster, Nibbles. I’m content with a hamster! I have enough personalities in my house as it is! 4. When was the moment you finally started admitting to other people that you were an author and actually feeling the truth of that statement?

tenuous because many people don’t understand that just because you write menage doesn’t mean you ‘live’ menage. I write about the Wild West, but I don’t live in the 1880’s either. It’s fantasy, even as an author, so I think many people can’t make that leap. 5. Where have you been and where’s your favorite place to travel? I’ve been lucky in that I’ve traveled tons this year, perhaps more than I even expected. I went to California with family, South Korea with my mom, my high school reunion in Maryland, a Vale roadtrip to Canada, NYC for RWA, even Milwaukee! If I could get on a plane today? A place I’ve never been- Australia. A place I want to go back to- Kauai. 6. If you could meet one person who’s gone now, who would it be? My great-grandmother. She was able to cook breakfast for eight, lunch and dinner for fifteen. No microwave, No boxed macaroni and cheese. It all came out of the oven hot and from scratch. I would like to pick her brain about recipes and how she was able to multi-task like that. I think I got my multi-tasking abilities from her, but she wins, hands down. 7. Erotic AN EXCERPT FROM ROSE:

T

he kitchen at six in the morning was akin to what I remembered of busy Chicago intersections— crowded, loud and slightly dangerous. With ten women in the house, there was never quiet, never any peace. It was the same, day in and day out. Dahlia bickered with Miss Esther about how the bacon should be cooked. Poppy stood behind Lily and styled her blond hair in another inventive creation. Marigold set the table with a loud clatter of dishes, eager for her meal. Hyacinth sat at the large table humming placidly to herself as she sewed on a button. Iris and Daisy were most likely still asleep or at least taking their time in dressing as to avoid morning chores. I paused and watched the hubbub, shaking my head at the claustrophobic feel in the room. Nothing had changed. The room had not changed since the first day we’d all arrived from Chicago sixteen

years before. Besides being older, no one had changed; our personalities were as varied as ever. Except me. I’d changed. Why did everyone irk me? Why did the house suddenly seem so small? Why did my sisters seem so grating? Why did I feel like I was being suffocated? Wanting to escape, I dropped the armful of wood into the bin beside the stove and walked right back outside, and started across the grass to the stable. I took deep breaths of the cool morning air in an attempt to settle myself. It was too early to be riled, especially from just the normal morning routine. “Rose!” Miss Trudy’s voice carried all the way to me. There was more than physical distance between us; there was an emotional separation as well. I stopped and turned back with a sigh, tucking my unruly hair behind my ear. The woman who’d raised eight orphan girls, myself included, held up a folded cloth. “If you won’t eat at the table, at least take something with you.” Her hair was up in a simple bun at her nape of her neck, the gray in her red hair bright in the sun just breaking over the mountains. She was still beautiful, even with the fine lines that showed her age. As I mounted the steps to take the food, I saw concern in her green eyes, but refused to speak of it. I smelled the biscuits and bacon and my stomach rumbled. “Thanks,” I replied, with a semblance of a smile on my lips. “Where will you be?” she asked, her voice calm and placid. She never shouted, never raised her voice. No one went off without sharing their whereabouts, for dangers abounded the ranch and all of Montana Territory beyond. “I’ll follow the fence line to look for any sections that might need repair.” There was no damaged fence line. I knew it and so did Miss Trudy, but she only gave a small nod, allowing me to escape. Not sure what else to say, I turned to head towards the stable. I couldn’t tell her I was unhappy, although I was sure she knew. Uttering the words would make me seem ungrateful. She and Miss Esther had provided a stable, loving home for all of us girls. I would have grown up in a large city, never knowing the open expanses and big sky of Montana if they hadn’t claimed us all and brought us west. The thought had me rubbing the space above my heart, guilt and a restlessness pressing heavily.

Erotic Erotic No matter the depth of her caring or the closeness I had with the other girls, I needed more. I needed to escape. *** “Whatever that fence post did to you, it sure is sorry now.” The deep voice that came from behind me was such a surprise that I hit my thumb with the hammer. I was a mile from the house when I’d decided to work out some of my frustrations on the fence. The post had had a loose nail and I’d begun to pound it in, continuing to strike even after it was lodged back in the wood. I was still hammering when he caught me unawares. I sucked in a breath at the searing pain in the tip of my thumb, holding the base of it in my other hand. I let a few less-than-ladylike words slip out as I winced, walking around in a circle. “Chance Goodman!” I shouted, my anger and pain loud and clear. “You don’t sneak up on someone like that.” The man was ten years older than I and lived on the nearest ranch. His parents had died a few years earlier and with much success, he’d taken over the spread, adding more cattle and even studding out his prized bulls. The latter made me flush every time I thought of it, for I knew what happened between a man and a woman—Miss Trudy and Miss Esther were former brothel owners and had given each of us girls a special talk—and I’d always pictured Chance’s face in my mind when I imagined such acts. I’d seen one of his bulls and the...the thing that hung down from beneath its belly and it had me wondering what Chance would look like. Would he be large himself? Would he be just as aggressive when he mounted a woman? My nipples always tightened into hard points and I felt slickness between my legs every time I imagined such a scenario. There was no other man for fifty miles who was so fine a specimen of manhood as Chance Goodman. I’d thought so when I was nine, and I thought the same now at nineteen. His hair was a chocolate brown which he let run toward the overly long. He towered over me; I only came up to his shoulder and made me feel...feminine. There were eight women in the house who cared about ribbons and lace when I was more interested in saddle leather and branding. But Chance often made me wish I’d combed my hair or worn clothing that made me appear more comely, at least 3434

in his eyes. It wasn’t his broad shoulders or thickly corded forearms that had my heart pounding whenever I saw him. It wasn’t the way a dimple dented his cheek whenever he smiled. It wasn’t the strong jaw nor the big hands so much as his dark eyes that attracted me. He was the only person who passed whatever facade I raised to hide my true self. It was as if I were constantly exposed, every emotion and feeling I had was clear as spring water to him. I couldn’t hide from him, even when, like now, he stood right before me. “Here, let me see.” He took my hand as I turned toward him. Before I could step away, he lifted it up so he could look at it, then, to my complete and utter surprise, slipped my injured thumb into his mouth. My own mouth fell open in utter surprise. My thumb was in Chance Goodman’s mouth...and it felt good. His tongue flicked over the injured tip, sucking on it as if withdrawing the pain as he would venom from snakebite. His mouth was hot and wet and my finger pulsed—among other places—and it wasn’t from the hammer. “What...what are you doing?” I asked, my words tumbling out in a confused rush. Chance had never even touched me before. He’d given me his linked palms to use as a step to mount a horse, but that was nothing compared to this. The way his dark eyes captured mine as his tongue flicked over my thumb was new. Gentle, possessive, hot. God, this was the most carnal thing I’d ever experienced and it was just my thumb! What would happen to me if he took even greater liberties? At that enticing and very scary thought, I tugged my hand back. He could easily have kept it, for his strength was so much greater than mine, but he released me of his own choosing. “Better?” he asked. His voice was deep and rough, reminding me of stones in the river. I could only nod in response, as I was still flustered. “I think this is the first time I’ve made you speechless.” The corner of his mouth turned up and his dimple appeared. I put my hands on my hips, ignoring the pain. “What do you want?” I asked, my tone acerbic. His gaze raked over my body, assessing. He sighed. “Right now? I want to know what’s wrong.” “Besides my thumb?” I held my hand up. “Nothing,” I grumbled. “Rose,” he said, his voice raised in that irritating warning tone.

Erotic “What? Can’t a girl have some secrets?” His dark eyebrows went up. “Since when do you consider yourself a girl?” He glanced down at the pants I wore instead of the skirt or dress of every other female. The barb stung, for it only validated my earlier insecurities. He didn’t think of me as a woman. He thought of me as...Rose. Plain Rose in pants. What man could ever be interested in a woman who’d rather wear pants than ribbons and lace? What man could desire a woman who hammered fence posts? “Since....” I clamped my mouth shut. “Oh, bother.” I turned away from him and stomped off. “Is Dahlia pestering you again?” he called out. “Or did Marigold eat your breakfast?” I knew he was toying with me, for he’d never poke fun at the other girls. He was too much of a gentleman. It didn’t keep him from poking fun at me. When Miss Trudy and Miss Esther found us girls, orphaned after the great Chicago fire, they hadn’t known our names. Why they gave us all names of flowers, I’ll never know. Moving to the Montana Territory had been a way for all of us to start over, especially Miss Trudy and Miss Esther. Well off from their years running a big city brothel, they’d wanted a new life and found it outside the town of Clayton. We were infamously known as the Montana wildflowers and were always considered as a group of eight, not as individuals. “Everyone is the same. Nothing’s changed.” “Are you wanting something different then?” He leaned a hip against the battered fence post, relaxed and at ease with himself while offering me his complete attention. I saw his horse in the distance, head lowered and nibbling grass. A bird flew overhead, its wings still as it rode a wind current. “Something different? Of course I want something different!” I waved my arms in the air as I spoke. “I want to be independent, wild. Free! Not stuck in a house full of women who gab all day long about hairstyles and dress sleeve length. I want to do what Miss Trudy did— strike out and discover a whole new life in a far off land.” He patiently let me vent my spleen. “What do you plan to do?” “I don’t know, Chance, but I’m about to burst out of my own skin. Don’t you see? I don’t belong here anymore.” I lowered my head with that admission, for I felt shame and guilt press heavily on my heart. Miss Trudy and Miss Esther had done so much for me, for all

of the girls, and I was tossing all those years, all the love aside. I pressed once again to that spot on my chest as I felt tears well. Lifting my head to the sky, I sniffed and forced the tears back. I didn’t cry. I never cried and I was mad at Chance for making me feel this way. With his long stride, he walked toward me through the tall grass and tilted my chin up with his fingers, forcing me to look at him. My hat fell off my head to dangle by the long cord around my neck. His scent, a mixture of warm skin and pine and leather was something I associated solely with him. “No. You don’t belong here anymore.” I couldn’t believe that he agreed with me. The one person who I expected to fight for me—my friend— agreed with me. He wanted me to leave. I tore my chin from his hold and stomped over to my horse, quickly mounting. Using the reins to turn the animal, I gave Chance Goodman one last look. It was time to move on; he’d just confirmed that for me. My heart hurt, knowing I’d never see him again. I settled my hat back on my head, gave it a little flick with my finger in farewell and rode off. Not only did the tip of my thumb ache, but also my heart.

ava SINCLAIR EXCERPT FROM STAKING HER CLAIM:

I went to see the magistrate this morning.” Cody pulled the paper from his shirt pocket. “I know you don’t want to see your brother’s claim mined by someone else, and you can’t leave here without giving up your rights. So I’m going to let you stay. But you need legal protection. “I know you’re in mourning and can’t marry either one of us, and I hope to marry another anyway — if she’ll have me. That just left one option.” Cody paused. “You’re our legal ward now, Jenny.” The inside of the cabin became quiet as she regarded him, the only sounds coming from the bustling camp outside. “Your…ward? You mean like your … child?” “It’s for your own good,” Cody said. “You need protection, and the protection of two is better than one…” “That was the only way?” she asked. “To reduce me so?” “We’ll think no less of you, Jenny,” Cody said. “If anything, it will make you only more important to us.” Jenny chewed on her lip as she considered their words. “Well, if that’s what it takes,” she said. “But I’m not really a child, and don’t either of you go thinking this means I have to listen to you, because…” “I beg to differ.” This time Nigel spoke, his cultured, gentle voice adopting a firm tone. “If you’re under our protection, then it stands to reason that you’re also under our authority, young lady. It seems that you now have two very good reasons to do as you’re told.” “Or what? You’ll punish me, too?” Jenny asked, rising from the table as her eyes flashed fire. “If it’s necessary, yes,” Nigel replied, and Cody watched the exchange with interest, pleased to see his usually quiet friend joining him for a united front. “And make no mistake; while I may be a patient man, my patience has its limits,” the Englishman continued. “I’m no stranger to using a hand or cane to correct a young lady. Having attended schools where corporal

punishment was employed, I know firsthand the benefits of discipline – especially the cane.” Cody felt a moment of pity as Jenny’s eyes welled up with tears. He knew within her small frame was a fighting spirit; how else could she have weathered the trip to Coloma? But he also knew that curbing that spirit — demanding her obedience — was the surest way to keep her safe.

karen DOCTER HERO CHARACTER INTERVIEW ~ JAKE STEFANI, COP ON HER DOORSTEP 1. What is your name? Do you have a nickname? My full name is Giacobbe Marcos Stefani, but only my traditional Italian mother insists on using it, usually when I’m doing something that provokes her. Giacobbe is Italian for Jacob. My friends call me Jake. 2. Who is your best friend? What kinds of things do you do when you’re together? My best friend is my partner, Ramón. We both joined S.W.A.T. a year ago and ride together when we’re on regular shift. When we’re not working…well, I’m always at the precinct or training in some way. I don’t have much to go home to, but Ramón is married to the love of his life and has four children. They’re great about inviting Uncle Jake to do family things with them. I recently bunked in their basement for four months after my ex-girlfriend kicked me to the curb. I only hang with Ramón at work now that I’m moving into my new house. I’m too busy unpacking, remodeling, and getting to know my luscious new neighbor, Carrie, and her eight-year-old son, Eric. 3. If you have a family, how do you get along with them? If you don’t, are there people in your life you consider family? How do you get along? I’m Italian, but I don’t have a huge family in the States. My dad died shortly after I graduated from the academy. I’m Mama’s only child and sometimes that can be a pain, especially since she’s determined to marry me off so I can start making all the bambinos she wants. She’s traditional and has definite ideas about her duties...and mine...to the family name.

But, I love her. She lives about an hour and a half away since I moved to Riverton, Colorado seven years ago to work in the same precinct as my Uncle Jules. It’s just enough distance to keep her from showing up with potential wife material, not that she doesn’t sideswipe me occasionally. Mama’s set her heart on my ex-girlfriend. I’ve yet to convince her it’s over, that I’m pursuing my own woman who, luckily enough, lives two doors down across the street. When I joined the Riverton Police, my uncle wasn’t my superior. Now, he’s my captain. We’re close but work at keeping our personal and professional lives separated. My uncle isn’t Italian. He met Mama’s sister when she came to the States for my parents’ wedding. He was my dad’s Best Man as well as his partner. I have two cousins my age, Gino and Lorenzo. We spent a lot of time together growing up, camping and fishing. The rest of the Mazzotti-Stefani family lives in Italy. I met a bunch of them several years ago when I took Mama there for my great-grandfather’s funeral. Just thinking of going back makes me shake in my boots. If I thought Mama was bad with her incessant matchmaking, she is a neophyte compared to the rest of them. There were more single women at my great-grandfather’s funeral than lived in the nearest four villages. I won’t go back there again until I’m safely married with half a dozen kids in tow! 4. Do you have a secret? If so, who do you need to keep the secret from and why? I don’t normally keep secrets. However, I do have one I’m keeping from Carrie until she gets to know me better. She knows I’m a police officer. After all, I did bring her son home after I captured him in my

CONTEMPORARY CONTEMPORARY it up before I climb back up that ladder. I’ll wear black jeans, a blue cotton shirt, and my black leather moto jacket tonight when I take Carrie out to dinner. 6. If you had to make me a meal right now, without going to the store, what would you find in your refrigerator to feed us? I’ve been living in Ramón’s basement for months and taking on more than a few double shifts, so I’ve been eating out a lot. I’ve only been in my house three weeks so my kitchen is bare. I make a mean ravioli when I have time to stock up my freezer. Come back in a few weeks. If you’re really hungry, we could drive to Mama’s house in Colorado Springs. It’ll take us an hour and a half, but it will be worth the drive. She always makes plenty of her famous spaghetti and meatballs. She loves to feed friends and family. Um, you’re already married, right?

backyard making mischief. But she’s got a bad history with cops, especially S.W.A.T. cops. I need to work on her perception of my uniform before I spring on her that I’m also S.W.A.T. like the officer who killed her husband. Once she accepts my uniform, I’m confident she’ll get past the rest. 5. Look down. Describe what you’re wearing. Is this the way you’re normally dressed? If not, what do you normally wear? I’m on vacation so I’ve hung my police uniform in the closet for the duration. It’s what I wear when I’m on shift. You caught me in the middle of my house renovation. I’m stripping wallpaper off the walls in one of the spare bedrooms. Why anyone would hang wallpaper on Spanish stucco is beyond me! Anyway, I’m wearing my favorite jeans, a faded black t-shirt with chunks of wallpaper paste and dust, and tennis shoes. Hmm, one is loosely tied. I’d better tighten

7. What’s the one thing you’re afraid of losing? I’m afraid of losing another kid to gang violence. Ever since a ten-year-old kid from my old neighborhood died in my arms, I’ve been doing everything I can to get rid of the SKL gang that has taken hold on Riverton’s west side. They killed Mateo Reyes, his older brother Julio has gone missing, and I’ll be damned if I’ll let them destroy any more lives. I’m afraid I’ll never find Julio and bring him back to his grieving mother. I’m afraid I will find him and have to give him back to her in a box to lie alongside his brother. I’m holding tight to my mission...maybe too tight, if my superiors were right to force me on vacation. But I won’t rest until I find Julio. 8. You’re doing intense spring cleaning. What’s easy for you to throw out? What’s difficult to part with, and why? I’d have a hard time getting rid of anything right now. My girlfriend kicked me to the curb four months ago, remember? She took damned near everything with her, including my self-respect and my dog, Riker. I guess it was easier to walk away from everything than to fight for it. The only thing that mattered when our relationship imploded was that I’d lost Mateo and Julio. The few basic things I kept were stored in Ramón’s garage until

If I had one regret, it was losing Riker. We were buddies. I miss training him, but what was I supposed to do with a dog? I didn’t have a home. I was working all the time. If I had to do it all over again, I’d have kept him. I didn’t want to impose on Ramón any more than I had to, but we could have worked something out somehow. 9. Has anyone broken your heart? Who was she? After hearing me go on and on about my ex-girlfriend, you’d expect me to say she broke my heart. The truth is we were in trouble even before I moved in with her. When she traded me in for a better cop model, I was more pissed than anything. Removed from the situation, I quickly realized I was too stubborn to accept that I’d made a mistake, that I’d let Mama’s matchmaking and my need for a family of my own get in the way of my good sense. I think Carrie could break my heart...if she doesn’t accept my uniform. 10. What makes you laugh out loud? Carrie’s boy, Eric He’s a great kid who has definite opinions and isn’t afraid to tell you. For instance, when I asked Carrie to help me organize a barbecue so I could meet the neighbors, he didn’t want her to invite the Lawrences. When I asked him why, he told me I’d know who Mrs. Lawrence was right away because I’d be throwing up all over the place. After meeting Kitty and experiencing one of her creations firsthand, I knew exactly what he meant. The kid might only be eightyears-old but he’s fun to be around.

nancy HERKNESS EXCERPT FROM THE CEO BUYS IN, WAGER OF HEARTS BOOK 1

At this hour of the night, I’m betting it’s a woman.” Nathan looked up to see who the dark-haired man at the bar was talking to. “I know what his problem is.” The bar patron tilted his head toward the blond man in the corner. “He threw an interception with five seconds to go against the Patriots.” The alcohol had lubricated the connections in Nathan’s brain, so with that hint, he could identify the broad-shouldered drinker as Luke Archer, longtime quarterback for the New York Empire. You couldn’t go anywhere in New York City without seeing his face on a billboard. Archer ignored both of them. The bar stool occupant took another swig of his bourbon and brought his gaze back to Nathan. “So am I right?” “I don’t see that it’s any of your business,” Nathan said. The other man laughed. “Everything’s my business. I’m a writer.” Nathan scowled. The last thing he needed was to appear as an item in some gossip column. He relaxed when he remembered this was the Bellwether Club, where the dress code was laid-back but confidentiality was strictly enforced. A lot of high-level business deals got done within the thick walls of the club’s tall brownstone. Probably a lot of government deals too, but he wasn’t privy to those. Didn’t want to be. “What do you write?” he asked, to turn the conversation back on his overly talkative fellow drinker. The man’s posture went tense. “Novels.” “You’re Gavin Miller.” The quarterback spoke, a noticeable Texas twang in his voice. “I read your Julian Best books on planes. When’s your next one coming out?” Miller stared down into his glass as he swirled the bourbon around. “My original deadline was three months ago.” He looked up with a mocking smile. “I 46

missed it. My deadline extension was today. Missed it too. Writer’s block.” “So what happens when a writer misses the deadline?” Nathan asked. “The same thing that happens when a quarterback throws a bad pass. The coach isn’t happy. And I get no royalties.” He took a swig of bourbon. “But there’s nothing they can do about it, because I don’t have a backup.” “No ghostwriters?” Nathan asked. “Don’t think I haven’t considered it, but I have enough respect and gratitude for my readers to believe I owe them my own efforts.” He shook his head. “The truth is, I could keep myself in style on what I earn from the Julian Best movies for the rest of my life and beyond, but good old Julian has become a small industry in his own right. The editors, directors, actors, film crews— hell, even the movie theater ticket takers—all depend on him.” He grimaced and looked at Nathan again. “So we’ve established who two of us are. What about you?” “I’m just a businessman,” Nathan said. “Not if you belong within these hallowed walls,” Miller said, gesturing with his glass to the dark wood paneling that lined the room. “Frankie Hogan doesn’t allow ‘justs’ in her club.” Nathan shrugged. “Nathan Trainor.” “Computer batteries,” Archer said. Miller saluted the quarterback with his glass. “So you’re not just a dumb jock.” Despite the slight haze the scotch had cast over his brain, Nathan was shocked at Miller’s bad manners. Archer, however, ignored the near insult. “I’m considering an investment in Trainor Electronics stock,” the quarterback said.“No one has ever figured out how to make a computer battery as long lasting as yours.” “We’ve diversified,” Nathan said. “Just in case they do.” The truth was he no longer knew what products his research-and-development department had in the works. His job as CEO was to read endless reports and go to endless meetings. He didn’t hear about new products until the paperwork hit his computer.

Another problem, right up there with Teresa. It struck him that he hadn’t thought about her since Gavin Miller had started this odd conversation. “Why don’t you all join me?” he asked, pointing to his table. “That way we won’t have to shout at each other.” “Don’t mind if I do,” the writer said, staggering slightly as he eased off the stool. Archer rose to an impressive height and strolled across the room, glass in hand. This was the guy Nathan had hated in school: the tall blond jock whom all the girls swooned over, while he and his fellow nerds were invisible. He allowed himself an inward smirk of satisfaction at meeting on an equal footing now. Then he considered Teresa and her kind and decided that maybe the Archers of the world weren’t so lucky after all. The high school girls had wanted Archer for the status of dating the star athlete, just like Teresa had wanted Nathan for his wealth or power. Neither was a good basis for a relationship. “It’s the beginning of a bad joke.A writer, a quarterback, and a CEO walk into a bar,” Miller said, slouching into a chair and setting his glass down on the table. “What’s the punch line?” Archer asked, an undercurrent of amusement in his voice.

urning her back to the room, she unbuttoned her jacket and hung the garment on the back of the wooden rocking chair. The room they occupied tonight belonged to Jamie’s son, Jake. The furnishings consisted of a double bed with an iron head and foot boards that were painted white, a small light wood dresser, and a commode of matching wood. Next she took off her skirt and actually sighed. The release of pressure around her middle felt amazing. She’d expanded to the point of barely fastening the buttons at the waist and she’d redone the waist band and button as many times as she could. She would have to start wearing her blouses untucked. “Gideon, I don’t have any clothes to wear as I increase. Will you be embarrassed if I wear my blouses untucked so I can hide the fact that my skirt does not button all the way to the waist?” She felt heat in her cheeks and her hands were getting moist. “No, but why don’t we ask Mama if she can’t help. Maybe she can show you how to move the buttons so you have more room.” Having already made those changes, she knew that wouldn’t work but talking to his mother did seem like a good idea. Ruby removed the remainder of her clothes, crossed her one arm her belly, one arm over her breast and ran for the bed. Gideon caught her and brought her flush with his also naked body, her back to his chest. He turned her in his arms so he could see her. “Don’t hide from me. I told you I want to know you. Especially since you are increasing, I want to see you. I want to know the baby and watch him or her grow within you.” She swallowed against a dry throat. His member was rigid between them and Gideon was very well formed. John had not been as endowed.

With his hands on her shoulders, Gideon guided her to the bed. “Lay down, please.” He whispered the request in her ear. She tried to ignore her racing heart and the way her breathing seemed shallow. “What side of the bed do you want?” “What?” “The side of the bed you sleep on will determine where I lay.” “Lay in the middle.” He sounded a little exasperated so she moved quickly.

EXCERPT: JAMIE BY CAROLINE CLEMMONS

hat night when Olivia and Jamie were in their room, she slowly undressed. All day she’d thought about what she would say. How naïve to think she could trust this man so easily. How stupid she’d been not to ask more questions before surrendering her body to him. Somehow, Olivia had the sense of having been cheated in the marriage bed. She had no real experience to go on because she had no one in whom she could confide. Judging by the novels she’d read, though, there should have been talk after their coming together. She faced him. “Jamie, why did you go through with the wedding?” He sat on the bed holding the boot he’d just removed then set it on the floor. “No choice.” What a maddening answer. She wanted to plant her fist on his handsome chin. Instead, she took a deep breath before speaking and exhaled slowly. “Of course you had a choice. You’re the head of the family and could have refused and sent me back where I came from or set me up in town so I could meet someone else. Barring that, you could have paid me off and sent me to Denver. There’s always a choice.” He shook his head as he started on his shirt buttons. “Not in this case. Any of those options would have caused talk. After you’d been here several nights, your reputation would have been compromised.” “If I weren’t here, why would that matter to you?” His hands stilled.“Ah, well, because Mama’s reputation would also have been damaged, as she pointed out to us brothers.” He removed his shirt and hung it on the bedpost. As she unfastened the ties of her petticoats, a horrible thought occurred to her and she froze. “Do you mean you don’t want more children?” His powerful chest muscles rolled with a shrug. “Wouldn’t mind, now that we’re wed, but I was content with Jake and Cat. Matter of fact, earlier today I mentioned how nice life would be with us brothers taking our kids to visit with their cousins.” He stood and unbuttoned his pants.

She turned her back and slid off her clothes then quickly pulled on her gown. “Weren’t you lonely?” Her back was to him and she couldn’t see his expression, but his voice sounded hard, “Look, Olivia, you seem like a nice enough woman, attractive, and intelligent. Sorry as I am you were brought here under false pretences, I don’t know what you expected to find.” Again, she froze for a moment. He thought she was attractive? When she turned around, he was sitting up in bed with the sheet at his hips. How could she concentrate on the conversation with all those rippling muscles and skin in sight? Despairing of the situation, she admitted, “I wanted a husband who would grow to love me and who’d love the children we’d have together. From the letters I thought were from you, I wanted to be a mother to your children, to be your partner and friend as well as your lover.” “I’ll love any children we have and you’re stepmother to my children. As for love, sorry but you’re out of luck there. You’ll have to be content with us being partners and friends. I’ve tried love and found it lacking.”

than glanced at her, his eyes flashing with annoyance.“Just why did you come to Colorado?” Now even Ethan was beginning to have contempt for her. Soon he would hate her like the others. “I told you, I was running from a wedding.” “Did you even consider what you were getting yourself into? Beth this is our life. This is what you can expect every day. Nothing more. No fancy parties. No theaters or socials. Just hardworking folk taking care of the ranch, day in and day out.” Obviously, she hadn’t contemplated what kind of life she was getting into. All she could think about was leaving before her father forced her to marry a man who didn’t want her. Just her trust fund and a hostess for his parties. “Thanks for telling me,” she said, pain gathering like a storm in her chest as she turned and walked away to the kitchen to help Milly and Clara serve the noonday meal. Then she would help Clara skim the cream and churn the butter and slowly die inside. As she went into the bunkhouse the men were already at the table scarfing down the food put in front of them. She entered the kitchen. “Milly, where’s the cake we made?” Milly smiled sadly at her and an uneasy feeling settled in the pit of her stomach. “Beth, baking is an art and for some people it takes several tries for them to feel comfortable in the kitchen.” A sense of foreboding overcame Beth. “Where’s the cake?” Laughter roared through the dining room and she heard someone say, “Beth’s first cake.” Milly’s eyes widened. “Oh no. I’m going to take a broom to their hide.” Together, she and Beth ran to the dining room door where Spunky Barton, one of the hired hands, was holding the disastrous desert up for everyone to see Beth’s ill-fated creation. The men were laughing and slapping Ethan on the back. “You’re going to starve if that woman ever has to cook for you,” Spunky declared. She’d suffered enough at the hands of everyone on this ranch and refused to take it anymore. Enough already. With her head held high, her heart crying inside and 56

her feet carrying her, Beth stoically walked over to the man, took the pan from him and smashed the desert in his face. “You try to make a cake and see if you can do any better.” She’d had enough of being the brunt of everyone’s joke’s. She was doing the best she could. Stunned, Spunky stood there with yellow cake dripping off his face. Beth turned and walked out of the dining room, her head held high, her back as rigid as the Rockies with tears brimming her lashes. To hell with the whole bunch, the husband who was ashamed of her and trying to change who she was. She was Elizabeth Worthington, debutante, heir to one of the richest fortunes in Chicago, and she was returning to where she belonged. Today, right this minute, if possible. She was done.

he opened the door to the library and peeked outside, Mr. St. Regis hovering above her shoulder so closely, that she could feel his warm breath. The hall was empty, but it wouldn’t be for long. The guests would be departing soon. She closed the door again and turned around. “Now, where’s your bedroom?” Jason gave her a smile worthy of the devil himself. “I thought you’d never ask.” She pursed her lips together. There was a number of guest rooms in the home and she wasn’t about to knock door-to-door looking for an empty one. “Hardly the time Mr. St. Regis, now which bedroom does my mother have you in?” “On the third floor at the end of the hall.” She thought for a moment. “On the left?” “My left or yours?” She rolled her eyes. “I suppose we’ll find it, let’s just hurry up and get upstairs before we’re seen.” “I love a woman who gets right to the point.” “Enough!” Rose hissed, poking a finger into his chest. “If you don’t stop this, I’m going to drop you off in the middle of the drawing room and let you fend for yourself. I promise, in your state, you’ll find yourself betrothed in a matter of minutes.” It took everything she had not to crack a smile. The truth was, she enjoyed the banter. It was easy to see why he had the reputation he did, words came easily to him. She’d never been much of a flirt, and had never really been the target of such flirtation either. Truth be told, when a gentleman approached, she sought refuge. But there was something about this man that made conversation come easier. Too easy. “I’ll consider myself warned.” His words were at odds with the devilish glint in those light blue eyes of his. He inclined his head slightly, a promise that he wasn’t quite finished yet. Rose led him out the door, and St. Regis followed more closely behind than she deemed necessary. Not that she minded. She peered around the corner, checking 58

for stray girls seeking out their prey, then signaled for him to head upstairs first. Once she saw him round the landing, she bounded up, taking the steps as quickly as possible given the confines of her gown. She reached the third floor hall right after he did, gasping for air from her quick ascension. She wasn’t much of an athlete, preferring to curl up and read rather than take any sort of brisk walk out of doors. This was the most exercise she’d had in weeks. “Looks like we’ve made it without incident,” he looked over the bannister. “So we have.” He bowed deeply. “Until we meet again,” he said with a flourish of his hand. “I shall count the moments whilst we are apart.” Rose rolled her eyes. “You’re ridiculous.” “Believe it or not, some women are actually flattered by my attention.” “I’m sure they are. Some women are also completely gullible and don’t have the good sense God gave a flea.” “Good night.” And with that, St. Regis started to walk down the hall, stopping suddenly after just a few steps. “Um, Miss Tisdale?” “Yes?” “Would you mind helping me find my room, I’m afraid I don’t quite remember which door is mine.” She frowned. Escorting him upstairs was one thing, escorting him to his room was quite another. She

Historical Historical imagined there were still young women wandering the house looking for the poor man, just waiting to be found in some dark, desperate corner. “Follow me, then. It’s most likely the last door on the left. Mother prefers to set up her gentleman guests down there, more masculine décor I suppose.” It had a giant canopied bed and just as many frills and flounces as any of the other rooms, but she’d chosen green as the palette, so she supposed that made it fit for a man in her mother’s mind. They arrived at the end of the hall, and cautiously opened the door of the room she suspected was his. “Here you are.” She turned, finding herself quite close to his chest, enveloped in his scent, a combination of sandalwood and drink, leather and smoke. It was as if there was a charge in the air surrounding the man. She felt her spine tingle, the sensation surging down the backs of her legs. She looked up, discovering his carefree grin had transformed into something more sinister. “Do I disappoint you?” he asked huskily. At that moment, she would have sworn her skirts were on fire. “Not yet,” she said, unaware of just how brazen her words sounded. He took a step forward, and she retreated, effectively placing them both within the walls of his bedroom. “I enjoyed talking with you earlier.” He practically purred his words, the smooth tenor giving her gooseflesh. “I don’t usually talk that much with women.” She swallowed, her mouth dry, imagining all too

vividly what it was he did do in lieu of conversation. “Well, women can be quite interesting.” He shook his head, his ice blue eyes piercing into her own. “Some more than others.” Rose looked away, preferring to stare anywhere but in those startling blue eyes of his. She was so confused, her body one giant contradiction. She was warm, yet chilled, her muscles tight, yet threatening to collapse at any moment. “You should go lie down now. I’m afraid you’re quite drunk,” she whispered, making a conscious effort not to look up. She wasn’t sure why exactly, but knew nothing good would come out of making eye contact. “You speak your mind quite readily-” “From your mouth to my mother’s ears.” “And you have no difficulty putting me in my place.” “Someone has to.” “Marc said you were quiet. I think you might have more to say then you’re letting on.” He reached out, tracing the embroidery at the top of her bodice with his index finger, lightly brushing her skin. “You barely know me,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “Then we should remedy that, don’t you think?” He picked up her hand and placed a kiss on the top of her glove. “Call me Jason.” Don’t look up, don’t look up… “Well, I’m still Miss Tisdale.” She was absolutely powerless to pull her hand away. “Really, it’s getting dangerously late and I think you should go to bed.” “I’d love to.” His voice was so low she could barely hear it over the sound of her heart pounding. “But I don’t want to go alone.” And after such a forward remark, she had no choice but to look up. Drat! There he was, very close… too close. And then he was cupping her face in his hands, kissing her. She didn’t have time to stop it even if she’d wanted to. Instead, she gave in completely, closing her eyes and moving her hands up his chest, pressing him against the door frame inside the room. His hands moved away from her face, travelling upward, his fingers burrowing in her hair, pulling her hard against him.The kiss deepened, and she moaned against his mouth, the taste of him permeating her senses. He pulled her head back, tearing his lips away from hers. Their gazes met, filled with something dangerous. Her head was spinning, drunk on seduction, her spine melting. Historical neck, the touch of his mouth searing her flesh. The warmth of his breath, heavy and quick, replacing the touch of his mouth. Suddenly he stopped and leaned back against the wall. She stared at him, wanting to continue, but frightened as to what would happen if they did. He pulled her to his chest, his arms enveloping her, the tender desperation of his touch silently communicating that he felt the exact same way. The two remained still for several moments, oblivious to the world around them. Rose kept her eyes shut tightly, as if any movement would thrust her back into reality. But then, something was wrong. Her eyes flew open and she took a step back, out of reach. He was snoring. “Jason!” He opened one eye. “Miss Tisdale, did I kiss you?” Incensed, she grabbed a fistful of his waistcoat and yanked him toward the bed. She turned him around with the ease one would toss around a rag doll and pushed him onto the mattress. “Miss Tisdale!” he exclaimed, his words slurring as he stared up at her. “I don’t think we should do this. You’re hardly in any state to make such decisions.” “Shut up and go to sleep, Mr. St. Regis.” She marched out the room, slamming the door behind her. Once safely on the other side, she stopped and listened, smiling at the rewarding sound of his snores.
