An Unexpected Friend By Romy Smithson
Once upon a time there was a mouse called Twinkle, who lived in a little house on top of a pile of hay. One day she asked her big sister Sparkle if she could play outside. Sparkle said “yes, but don’t get lost and be careful of the wolf that lives in the woods”
So Twinkle went to play outside. She tried to stay near the house, but she couldn’t help exploring the nearby woods and soon she was lost.
Twinkle walked though the woods and soon came to a crossroad. She knew that one way would lead home, but which one? She saw a house down one of the roads and decided to ask the owners if they knew which way home was.
It was Mrs Hedgehog’s house, she was outside sweeping up the leaves. Twinkle asked her if she knew where her house was. Mrs Hedgehog said “I’m sorry dear, but I don’t know where your house is. Be careful in the woods on your own, a wolf lives nearby.”
Twinkle was a little worried about the wolf, but she saw another house with a squirrel outside and ran to her. “Do you know where the little house on top of the hay is?” asked Twinkle “I have no idea, sorry. Watch out for the wolf though. Wolves eat little mice like you”
There were no more houses and Twinkle was getting very scared. All of a sudden she bumped into a rabbit who was on her way back from shopping. Twinkle asked her if she knew where home was. “I don’t know.” said the rabbit “You’re so small, you shouldn’t be this far into the woods alone, there is a wolf you know.”
Twinkle was cold, scared and lonely. She was sure she would never find her way back home and she was afraid that the wolf would come and eat her.
Meanwhile a little wolf was walking down the path after visiting her grandma. She spotted Twinkle crying and wondered what was wrong.
“Hello? Are you ok?” asked the little wolf. Twinkle was frightened when she looked up and saw the wolf, but she wasn’t a scary wolf. She seemed nice. So twinkle told her what had happened.
“You poor thing” said the wolf “my name is Fluffy and I go past your house on the way to mine, I can take you if you want.” Twinkle was happy that someone could help her get home.
Fluffy and Twinkle walked together and were soon best friends. Twinkle was surprised that the wolf she had been warned about was really very nice and not scary at all.
The two friends arrived at Twinkle’s house. Sparkle was waiting for her and the sisters ran to give each other a big hug. Twinkle told her sister all about Fluffy and her adventure in the woods. The next time Twinkle went to the woods, she made sure to bring her best friend.
Twinkle, the mouse wants to play outside. Her big sister warns her to be careful of the Big Bad Wolf. When Twinkle gets lost in the woods, she seeks help from the friendly woodland creatures, but in the end, help arrives in the form of a very unexpected friend. “An endearing and engaging book” Romy’s mum
