Welcome Welcome to Lincoln! Maybe you’re looking for a university experience that is quiet and intimate, or perhaps you prefer funfilled and action-packed? Lincoln is all of these things and more. The city of Lincoln is unique. It feels more like a beautiful, quaint town than a city. There’s none of the hustle and bustle and high crime rates of larger cities, such as London or Manchester. Lincoln feels much friendlier and is incredibly beautiful. At the heart of the city is the Cathedral Quarter, with its stunning Tudor buildings; the castle

grounds and the awe-inspiring cathedral. The cobbled streets are brimming with fascinating independent shops and boutiques. Steep Hill is precisely that… you may need a breather half-way up! Those preferring peace and quiet will find many places to walk or sit and relax. Not only are there a plethora of historic buildings to explore, the university is situated on a picturesque wharf, surrounded by restaurants and bars. For the more extroverted students, we have countless clubs and societies to join and make friends; bars, nightclubs and pubs-a-plenty. Of course, it won’t all be play; there will be some work! Rest assured that here at Lincoln, your learning experience will be second to none. You can take advantage of the best facilities and top-rate student accommodation. You’ll find plenty of info in this magazine to help you decide if Lincoln University is for you and to help you make the most of your time here. If you have any more questions, give us a call. We’d love to hear from you.

Happy Birthday University of Lincoln Happy Birthday University of Lincoln This October marks The University of Lincoln’s 20th anniversary. On the 11th of October 1996 the Queen officially opened the university saying ‘it’s good to be here again on a huge occasion for the city and county. We are making history, as well as the examiners, who will be your judge.” The opening of the university made a “dramatic change in the dynamic of the city.” The campus has since been dramatically extended and with a £113 million investment and the opening of the Sir Issac Newton building planned the university is better than ever. Paul Banton the Lincoln Area president of the Chamber of

Commerce says “what students spend locally has benefited hundreds of companies across Lincolnshire. The university is also actively involved in the business community through training people and sending out graduates into the community for employment.” The university is placed in the top 10 in the UK for overall student satisfaction with several of its courses ranked number one for their subject areas. Here’s to 20 more successful years of the University of Lincoln.

Cathedral One of Lincoln’s best known attractions is the twelfth century Gothic style Cathedral. At 83 metres high it is no surprise that it took over 100 years to build, from 1185 to 1311. The Cathedral is a stunning building, with three towers and 20 bells spread across them, plus it is the third biggest Cathedral in the country after St Paul’s Cathedral and York Minster. Visible from miles away, it truly is an awe-inspiring sight; especially as you get up close and take in the full majesty of the place. Even if you don’t want to pay to look around, you can

An awe-inspiring sight still visit the gift shop and walk in the grounds, craning your neck to look up at the fascinating stainedglass windows and interesting gargoyles. The cathedral is opposite the castle grounds, so when your family come to visit, there will be plenty of places to take them to sightsee. Your graduation will even take place within the cathedral. A beautiful and impressive backdrop for your special day, to celebrate your achievements.

Steep hill Steep Hill really is a must-see part of Lincoln. It has won two prestigious awards; Britain’s best place in 2011 and great street in 2012. Whilst it was formerly known as Ermine street, it’s easy to see why it is called steep hill, at 420m long with a gradient of one in seven (14%) at it’s steepest point it isn’t the easiest of climbs. In fact the steepest part of the hill is only assessable on foot as it is unsuitable for any kind of vehicle. It is certainly worth the climb though, boasting an array of independent shops, tea rooms and pubs, plus the opportunity to purchase a range of souvenirs bearing the praise “I climbed steep hill” at the tourist information shop at the top. In July 2016 an event was held where steep hill was transformed into a giant water slide for the day. The top of the hill is the Bailgate area, with the cathedral and castle, and the bottom is The Strait, which leads to the city centre. Steep Hill has a lot of history; it was built by the Romans to connect the growing parts of Lincoln and you can even see parts of old buildings in the shops dating back as far as the Norman times.

Steep Hill really is a must-see part of Lincoln.
