Set in Foshan, China during the Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man vividly brings to life the brutality of the infamous Japanese execution, where once proud men are forced to fight to the death for a precious bag of rice. Defined by courage and humility, one man rises to the fore. Grandmaster Ip Man (played by Donnie Yen): a Wing Chun impresario, whose matchless fighting skill is revered all over China.

project description For project 01, we were tasked on re-designing the Key Art for a previously released movie.

Upon refusing to teach his fighting art to the invading Japanese soldiers, he is forced to fight for the honor of his country in a series of battles that will culminate in a kill-or-be-killed showdown with Japan’s greatest fighter.

The re-design project included designing the type treatment, a teaser poster, and DVD box art. We began our design process by researching succesful key art and deciding which of these campaigns succesful and why? ▼▼

type treatment beginnings When looking at succesful Kung-Fu movie type treatments I noticed that most used a bold condensed sans serif. Knowing this, I explored using condensed bold sans serif typefaces such as Univers, NeutraFace, and Trade Gothic. Option 01 There are two Ip man movies in the series, with both storylines dealing with pitting two countries against each other. This option would have had an icon in the middle that related the countries feuds. Option 02 With this option I wanted “IP” to be the main focus and “Man” to act as a pedestal. Option 03 “Ip man” is an action packed Kung-Fu movie. With option 03 I wanted to play with intersecting type as if it were two entities clashing.

type treatment option descriptions Option 01 This option plays with my icon idea, but instead of using a flag or a symbol that represents a counry. I decided to use a fist, which I felt described the Kung-Fu genre perfectly. Option 02 This option stays close to my research of using a bold condensed sans serif typeface. I used Trade Gothic condensed number 18 and 20 for this option. Option 03 The movie is set in China and how Chinese culture is able to prevail over the occupying Japanese army. I felt it was appropriate to use calligraphy for the type treatment. This option was hand made.

final type treatment concept Knowing how I wanted to treat the artwork for the poster and DVD art, the calligraphy’s organic nature was the best option. The image to the left was a revised version of previous sketches and iterations. This typeface was hand made.

poster options Option 01 IP man is the master of the Wing Chun fighting style. Throughout the movie Ip man utilizes the quickness of Wing Chun’s hand movements to defeat his opponets. This poster would be of many fists “fighting” the type content. Option 02 IP man was the master of the infamous action star, Bruce Lee. “The master of Bruce Lee” was also a major marketing tool for the movie. This option would be a parody of Bruce Lee’s “Enter the Dragon” movie poster. Option 03 The major storyline of IP man is how IP man uses his fists to save his countrymen from the Japanese General. IP man and the General battle to decide which country is supreme. This option would have macro portraits of IP man and the General. Option 04 This option would have IP man having his back turned from us as he stares down the Japanese army and their General. The other Chinese masters found throughout the movie would be surrounding Ip man to showing their support.

concept The final poster showcases Ip man at the forefront. The viewer makes eye contact with the four martial arts masters, who are all looking towards Ip man. For in the movie, all the masters look to Ip man to challenge the Japanese and ultimately win their freedom.

Ip man has his back turned to us, which is reinforcing the tagline of “Defying” against the the “Empire.” He is staring down the Japanese general found in the Red circle at the top of composition. The Japanese general was illustrated within a heavy shadow to represent the terror he is bringing the Chinese people. At a distance the red circle signifies Japan’s flag.

ideas behind concepts With the title treatment I wanted to focus on the “Ordinary” aspect of the title. This lead me to explore typefaces such as Helvetica to express the plain/Ordinary.

final type treatment concept Using the descender of the lowercase “a” as a leader or being “extra” long, this type treatment is a clean option whose primary goal was legibility. “extra” is set in Mrs. Eaves and “Ordinary” is set in Myriad Pro.

poster concepts The client provided inspiration of Struzan compositions and Lichtenstein artwork as a basis to dictate the visual language of the posters. Option 01 In the short film, one of the main characters becomes jealous that he does not have super powers. He begins to try to discover if he has super powers. In the montage there is a point where he references Wolverine from the X-men. This option would parody that scene. Keeping true to the Struzan compositions, the last three options focused on illustrating that visual style.
