LGET Alan Tuten The term "a cut above" comes from a dated practice whereby contestants in a race, or in tryouts, would be ranked on a board. A line would be drawn, the cutoff line, separating two groups - those that could continue on in competition and those disqualified from further consideration. Those above the line were "a cut above".

Fellow Toastmasters, it's hard to believe that we are 75% of the way through another year. With only three months remaining, I want to challenge you and your clubs to complete the year "a cut above". Consider some examples: If you are on track to have four CCs in your club by year end, why not canvass your members and strive for a fifth.

If your goal is to recruit eight members, giving you two points in the DCP, why not recruit ten.

If as a member you have not yet held a club leadership role, why not make next year the year you serve, just as you have been served.

Perhaps as a club, this would be a great time to reinforce the use of the CL manuals, and bring in more than two leadership awards this year.

Whether you finish the year with more than 20 members or fewer ... whether you complete five points in the DCP or not ... I think you'll agree that you still have some goals that you can not only reach but exceed. Why not do so, and finish the year "a cut above"?

LGM Daphne Hill We are coming down the home stretch and we’re racing to the GREEN! This year we’ve adopted an overarching concept of moving clubs from red to green.

We’re infusing the District with new clubs and we’re coaching clubs with less than twelve members to reach for distinguished status. If we each stand true to the Toastmaster’s Promise, each club CAN achieve Distinguished status by June 30, 2011.

Achieving Distinguished Status

We’re a club with fewer than 20 members. Can WE be distinguished? YES YOU CAN! Here’s how: Get your club dues in – do it now!

Each club member commits to bring a friend, coworker, or family member to each meeting. If four members bring four guests to every club meeting, that’s potentially eight opportunities per month to increase membership. You’re on your way to charter strength or a net gain of five members.

Set goals ≈ Who will receive CCs between now and June? ≈ Who will receive CLs between now and June? ≈ Who will receive ACs between now and June?

Set the schedule so each person selected can reach his/ her goal on time.

Come to each meeting prepared to present (in case there’s extra time or someone is unable to present – you will be prepared to work on your goal).

Schedule a speech-a-thon where you focus on giving speeches (with evaluations) so goals can be met.

Visit another club and look for ideas to make your club meetings more engaging.

You will probably already have heard that the next six months dues are to be paid to World Headquarters by April 1, 2011. Unless those fees are paid for you by your employer in a corporate club, your club’s Treasurer should have asked you for a check. If he or she has not, perhaps it would not hurt to remind the Treasurer of the fact. Paying dues on time is one of the points for your Distinguished Club award.

Eastern Division Governor Peter Moyer One area that I hear the most complaints at work and even at Toastmasters is in the area of communication. Wow, Toastmasters are supposed to be great communicators? Sure they are! Have you ever asked someone to fill a role only to get no response? Did you ever get a positive response to fill a role and have that person not show up to the meeting? Have you ever been this person?

I have a couple thoughts on communication to share. Communication can be helpful and can be hurtful. Communication is helpful

when it is prompt, honest and clear. Communication can be hurtful when it is not prompt, not honest and not clear.

We are in Toastmasters not only to overcome our “fear of public speaking� but to be better communicators, right? Start being a better communicator by following the three simple axioms of good communication: 1. Be Prompt 2. Be Honest 3. Be Clear

do. Be a better communicator at work, at home and even with your own Toastmasters club. When you are prompt, honest and clear in your communications you will benefit by being respected by all those you communicate with.

Start by practicing this with your own Toastmasters Club. Toastmasters is a safe place to practice your communications skill. Build the habit of good communication at Toastmasters and see your skills translate to productive results at work and home. ENJOY!

Western Division Governor Linda Davis Spring 2011 is in the air. This marks a time of refreshing, growth and vigor. The Western Division is flowing into this season with an attitude of winning by increasing club membership, speech contest victories and accomplishing club goals.

We started this year winning the Traveling Trophy at the District Executive Club Meeting. Our schedules are filled with events to increase membership and we are sharing Toastmasters with everyone we meet. The Blue Ridge Toastmasters Club hosted an Open House on January 25th and Best Part Toastmasters had a membership event on February 23rd. Piney Mountain and Franklin County are planning membership growth events soon.

There have been several well attended, motivating part 2 Officer training sessions throughout the Western Division which has sparked clubs to focus on their goal of

finishing the year distinguished. Many clubs have held their club International and Table Topics Speech contests and we invite you to join us at our upcoming speech contests.

Mechanic .vs. heart Surgeon Author Unknown

A mechanic was removing a cylinder-head from the motor of a Harley motorcycle when he spotted a wellknown cardiologist in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the Garage.

"Hey, Doc, want to take a look at this?"

The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and ask, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its'

heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in, and when I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $40,000 a year and you get the really big bucks ($1,500,000) when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

The cardiologist paused, smiled and leaned over, then whispered to the mechanic..."Try doing it with the engine running."

It’s Election Time Alice Blake, DTM, PDG, Nominations Committee Chair During the Business Meeting at the District Conference, new officers will be elected for the Toastmaster year starting July 1. The nomination process has started and the committee is working diligently to interview and certify eligibility for the following positions: The District Governor has the responsibility of directly overseeing and managing the District’s day to day operations, finances, and human resources. At the time of taking office, the District Governor must have served at least six consecutive months as a Club President and at least twelve consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor, Division Governor, or a combination of the two.

The Lieutenant Governor Education and Training is responsible for all aspects of education and training within the District. This includes supporting quality club programming efforts, promoting the Distinguished Club Program, coordinating the training efforts of the District, and planning and executing the District conference. The Lieutenant Governor Education and Training must have served at least six consecutive months as a club president and at least twelve consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor, Division Governor, Area Governor, or any combination of these.

The Lieutenant Governor Marketing is responsible for of all aspects of marketing, club-building, and member and club retention efforts within the District.

This includes defining an overall marketing strategy for the District, developing outreach and retention efforts with existing community and corporate clubs, and penetrating new markets. Additionally, the

Lieutenant Governor Marketing will support challenged clubs and help them to become distinguished clubs. The Lieutenant Governor marketing must have served at least six consecutive months as a club president and at least twelve consecutive months as a Lieutenant Governor, Division Governor, Area Governor, or a combination of these.

The District Treasurer has responsibility for the fiscal oversight and management of the District. The District Treasurer works closely with the District Governor and Lieutenant Governors to ensure that the District is making cost effective decisions, within policy, that result in effective fiscal management. The District Treasurer should have knowledge of accounting and be acquainted with the handling of financial matters. The District Treasurer is eligible for reelection or reappointment for one succeeding term only.

The Division Governor is responsible for leading and supporting the Division through the supervision and support of the Area Governors. For the Division to be successful and implement the District goals, the Division Governor must work closely with their team of Area Governors. One of your primary goals as Division Governor is to ensure that each club achieves its mission and fulfills its responsibilities to its members. To achieve this, the Division Governor should set Division goals, and assist in the training of area and club officers. The Division Governor must have served at least six consecutive months as a member of a District Council.

Dancing develops various skills on social and professional levels incorporating body language, confidence and marketing; advantageous skills for the LGM to encourage growth in clubs and members.

I chartered Tower Toasters and served as President during my first year of Toastmasters. We earned the Select Distinguished Award and assisted with the charter of Toasters on Track. I also served as an Area Governor and earned my ACB, ALB. Remember, the more you give to Toastmasters, the more you benefit. Let's share our benefits.

Linda Kennedy I have served in most club offices since joining Toastmasters in 2007 in Brussels, Belgium and was awarded Toastmasters Lifetime Achievement Award, Areas B1/B2, D59. Since becoming a member in D66, I have served as VPM and Area C21 Governor.

Each of these leadership roles has enhanced my communication skills and strengthened my leadership abilities. I understand the challenge and opportunity of meeting the goals of the DCP and, as Central Division Governor, I will use my knowledge, energy and passion to serve and support the Area Governors of the Central Division and D66.

Eureka F. Collins I realize that servant leaders create environments conducive to learning and growing, therefore, I will passionately serve the District with my talents and skills.

As a member of Virginia Beach Toastmasters Club, I have served as VP of Education (two terms) and earned the CC, CL and ALB awards. I currently serve as Area 26 Governor and I’m committed to the service and success of all Toastmasters.

Professionally, I am an Award-winning author, inspirational speaker, Trainer and Presenter. I recently launched an audio book entitled, Effective Public Speaking in 90 Minutes and hold a Master’s degree in Training and Leadership.

Kathy Reynolds Kathy Reynolds co-chaired the wildly successful 2010 Fall Conference. Her creative vision resulted in a sellout of nearly all of the events and garnered more than $10,000 in contributions – a first for District 66. She loves Toastmasters! For the past six years, Kathy has served as club president, VPE for three terms, VPM, VPPR, Area Governor and currently is a Club Coach. Under her leadership, her home club earned President’s Distinguished twice. She has demonstrated her commitment to our next generation of Toastmasters with adult communication and leadership training and by teaching public speaking to local high school students.

Andrea Morgan Andrea Morgan is a resident of Norfolk, Virginia and has been a valued member of Toastmasters since 2007. She is a member of three Toastmasters clubs: Titan Mix Masters Club, the Three Letter Club and the Words of Knowledge Club. Within the organization she has achieved the highest level a Toastmaster can obtain, the Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM).

Andrea has served District 66 two consecutive years as an Area Governor, two consecutive terms as club president and one term as club Vice President Public Relations. She is a charter member of two of her clubs, and has founded and sponsored one of her clubs.

When asked, Andrea accredits her leadership confidence to the reassurances she has gained through the educational programs.

Ian D. Henry I joined Blue Ridge Toastmasters Club in Charlottesville in 2000 with dreams of becoming an after dinner speaker, instead I discovered a talent for storytelling.

I thank my wife for the inspiration and Toastmasters for the opportunity to develop as a storyteller.

I have been President, VPE, SAA, the club’s videographer and Treasurer. I am currently District 66 Treasurer. One reason for standing is that I feel it takes a year of service to align the Treasurer with WHQ’s way of doing things but the prime reason is to provide continuity of service. Pia Guerin "I'm Pia Guerin, a 11 year member of City Talk Toastmasters who has served in a majority of Club Officer roles. I am the current Area 17 Governor. With more than twelve years of accounting experience, I have served District 66 during 2010-2011 by providing Treasurer training multiple times in all Divisions.

Who Can Vote?

Voting members are the club presidents and vice presidents education.

The district executive committee: district governor, lt. governor education and training, lt. governor marketing, the immediate past district governor, public relations officer, secretary, treasurer, division governors and area governors.

Who Can Be A Proxy Holder?

Either the club president or the club vice president education may designate, in writing, any active member in good standing of the club to act as a proxy or proxies and cast one or both of the club’s ballots at the district council meeting. If one of those officers is not at the meeting and has not designated, in writing, an active member of the club to act as proxy or proxies of the club at any council meeting, the other officer in attendance may cast two votes. The intent is to assure that every club will be able to cast two votes. No other proxies are valid at any such meeting.
