Course Description

Organizational Development (OD) is a conscious, planned process of developing an organization’s capabilities so that it can attain and sustain an optimum level of performance as measured by efficiency, effectiveness, and health. Through the process of OD, we attempt to bring about successful change efforts in individual employees, groups and teams, inter-groups, and organizations as well. At any of these levels, when we use the process of OD we are essentially asking: Where are we? Where do want to be? How do we get from where we are to where we want to be? To achieve a competitive advantage in a global marketplace, contemporary organizations are in a continuous state of change. Within such a complex system as an organization, change has a rippling effect. For instance, technological innovation is not limited to hardware and software. It has an impact, sometimes quite dramatic, economically, politically, socially, legally, organizationally, and even personally. Given the magnitude of change taking place, it is important for HR, OB, and Evaluation professionals to examine the theories and models, and methods and processes related to organizational change. In this course, we will focus on those methods, models, and processes specifically related to diagnosing and planning for organizational change. II

Rationale

Organizational development is considered as a multi-step process that may involve a wide variety of interventions. Interventions from those involving basic human processes to those requiring planning at the strategic level are considered in this course, with a particular emphasis on selecting appropriate interventions based on thoughtful diagnosis of organizational issues. Studies organization development as a process of planned change to improve an organization's problem-solving skills and its overall effectiveness within a changing and complex environment, including behavioral effects of power and authority, formal organizations, structural variation, leadership, motivation, and organizational change. Objectives


At the end of this course, students should have acquired sufficient knowledge of the field of organization development that they should (1) understand the basic theories upon which the field of OD is based, (2) have developed an understanding of the challenges of leading a planned change initiative and methods to increase the likelihood of success, (3) have developed a working knowledge of all aspects of the OD intervention process including entering and contracting, data collection and diagnosis, intervention methodologies, implementation, and sustaining change, (4) understand the unique challenges of attempting an organization transformation, (5) understand the roles that consultants, internal or external, can play in the OD process, and (6) have improved their own facilitation skills through a team facilitation assignment.
