duane michals • Born 2.18.1932 – McKeesport, PA • Became interested in art at age 14 while attending watercolor classes • Received BA from U. of Denver • Spent two years in the army • Started at Parsons SoD studying graphic design but left after a year
duane michals • Started taking pictures with a borrowed camera while visiting USSR in ’58 • Self-taught photographer • By ’69, was shooting commercially, though never owned a studio • Works featured in Life, Vogue, NY Times • Has done work for Gap and Microsoft
duane michals • Employs technique of double and triple-exposure • Writes poetic text by hand on photos • Sometimes paints on photos • Has surreal, almost cinematic style • Has been shown at MoMA and many other galleries
philip-lorca dicorcia • Born 1951 – Hartford, CT • Studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA • Received Masters of Fine Arts in Photography from Yale University in 1979
philip-lorca dicorcia • Alternates between informal snapshots and iconic quality staged compositions • Some call it a “baroque theatricality” • Work has been described as doc photography mixed with the fictional world of cinema and advertising • Work looks spontaneous, but is usually carefully staged
