We at H.R. College are extremely optimistic about the potential of our faculty and students to make the institution a centre of global excellence in the years to come. In keeping with this objective, academia-industry interaction was the area of focus. HR invited various dignitaries from around the world to interact with the staff and students. The speakers were from New Jersey City University, NYU Stern School of Business, Rutgers Business School, Deakin Graduate School of Business, Milgrad School of Business and Bocconi University, Milan. There were other speakers from the industry in India. Meritorious students have received international scholarships at St. Catherine's, Oxford; Westminster Business School, UK; Warwick Business School, UK; and Deakin University, Australia. O.P. Jindal Global University, Sonipat, Haryana; offered 50 scholarships to the junior and degree college, outstanding meritorious graduates. We continued with our industry visits with students visiting Amul, Gujarat to understand how the milk co-operative functioned. Inter-collegiate Events H.R. College wins the All India Inter - University Squash Championship January 20 - 22, 2014
The Sports Council of H.R. College organized the All India Inter - University Squash Championship 201314 at the Bombay Gymkhana Squash Courts. The opening ceremony at HR College was graced by the esteemed presence of Chief Guest, Mr. Charu Sharma, a famous commentator and quiz master; and Guest of Honour Dr. Kendre, Sports Director, University of Mumbai.
20 universities from all over the country battled it out. Winners were 1 st - Punjab University; 2nd - Delhi University; and 3rd Chandigarh University. In the finals our very own Mumbai University team including 3 H.R. College students emerged on top and won the Championship! It was an extremely competitive tournament, played in the true spirit of sportsmanship.
BLAZE 2014 Annual Inter-collegiate Finance Festival January 24-25, 2014 Business Luck Ambition Zeal Entrepreneurship - BLAZE 2014 fulfilled its promise of bringing to all an inter collegiate finance festival promoting the theme of “Changing Corporate Culture”. This two day festival was a mix of fun and great learning coupled with the notion of excellence. Having commenced on January 24, BLAZE 2014 for a third successful consecutive year. Split across two days with six events per day H.R. College reverberated with the sounds of cheer, hard work and victory. Nearly 26 Colleges showed eagerness this year at BLAZE participating under Contingent Names which represented global indices like our popular SENSEX, NIFTY and others like DAX and BOLSA.

Intra College Events PSDS: 'Off D' Cuff' - An Inter-Collegiate Extempore Speaking & Debate Competition January 11, 2014 The Public Speaking and Debating Society of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics organized its flagship event 'Off D' Cuff' – An Inter-Collegiate Extempore Speaking and Debate Competition. Around 62 Participants across 14 colleges in Mumbai participated in this competition. The Annual Satya Narayan Puja was held on the HR College terrace to commemorate the forty-third Death Anniversary of our beloved Founder Principal Shri HC Malkani. President and members of the HSNC Board, faculty, students, associates and guests participated in a
‘Shanti Paath and Havan’ which was conducted by Prof. V.N. Sharma, Director Admn., HR College. This was followed by a delicious lunch, also enjoyed by the visiting Family, Friends and Faculty and Students of the NYU Stern delegation.

Annual Sports Day January 23, 2014 The Annual Sports Day of H.R. College organized by the Sports Council was held at the M.S.S.A. Grounds. The event began with a March Past of the FYJC classes, degree college students and various clubs of the college. Principal Dr. Indu Shahani declared the annual meet open after taking the sportsman's oath. The club relay was won by the NSS unit and Students' Council was the 1st runner up. RCHR won the award for Largest Contingent. The sports day ended on a note of grand display of Sportsmanship!
Industrial Visits Amul- the Taste of India February 19-23, 2014 Second Year B.M.S. students visited the oldest known business towns in India; Anand, Gujarat. The objective of this trip was to understand the Cooperatives and the business model of Amul as a part of the subject, Cooperatives and Rural Markets. The three main takeaways from the entire industrial visit were: 1. That to be a Great Leader, having a vision to work for people 2. That dedication of the entire community to work towards the same cause for community well being

Universal Business School Visit February 22 – 24, 2014 Students of Third Year from different courses went on a visit to Universal Business School, Karjat. During the course of the visit, the students attended interesting Seminars by Founders Mr. Gurdeep Anand and Mr. Tarun Anand. ‘Being a Global CEO’, ‘Thomson Reuters terminal’, ‘Importance of team-building’, ‘Control your own destiny’ were some seminars that enlightened the students. The trip also included fun & adventurous activities like trekking, campfire which were thoroughly enjoyed by the enthusiastic students. The students were accompanied by Prof. Atul Sathe, Prof. Bharti Jethani, Prof, Navin Punjabi, Prof. Shubhada Kanchan, Prof. Geeta Sahu and Prof. Rani Tyagi.

February 13, 2014 At the visit to FLAME, TYBMM students accompanied by Ms. Parsheen Irani and Ms. Nidhi Thanawala, were exposed to various post graduate options in Media and Communication at FLAME. They received hands on experience on professional cameras and visited the studios on campus; and also attended a lecture on Screen writing.
February 20, 2014 SYBMM students & faculty Ms. Parsheen Irani visited the RED FM studio. At the studio, they gained knowledge on the functioning of a radio station and its different departments; acquired real time experience in the recording studio and interacted with RJ Malishka and RJ Rishi on career opportunities at a Radio station as well as scripting and production of radio shows.

February 20, 2014 The FYBAF and TYBFM students visited the Bombay Stock Exchange to understand the functioning of the Financial & Equity Markets and to acquaint themselves with the governance pattern adopted by BSE.
February 14, 2014 Dr. Paromita Chakrabarti led her FYBMM, literature students to the American Consulate, for a lecture by the American Consulate Officer and a documentary screening on American Independence. Students spent time in the American Consulate library and signed up for a free membership.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS SAURABH TRIPATHI The Betty and Donald Keating Scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for an academically brilliant student to experience studying at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. Saurabh Tripathi of the SYBMS is the recipient of this years scholarship selected by Naomi Freud, Fellow and Director of Studies for Visiting Students of St. Catherine's College, Oxford for a duration of 8 weeks. He will learn Strategic Management and Photography at the Oxford Campus. KHUSHAAL TALREJA Khushaal (TYBMS) received the Capacity Building Scholarship this year. This full Scholarship Award for the academic year 2014-15 is for pursuing a Masters in Marketing & Communications at the Westminster Business School, UK.
NIHAL DASWANI Nihal Daswani, a teaching assistant with the Unaided department, received the Full Academic Fee Scholarship Award (£31000) to pursue a Degree of Master of Science - Accounting & Finance at Warwick Business School, UK. AAKASH MEHTA Deakin University, Australia offered the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships of 100% tuition fee waiver to 2 students for pursuing further studies at Deakin U n i v e r s i t y. R e c i p i e n t s o f t h e scholarships, Aakash Mehta of TYBBI enrolled for a combined course of MBA & Masters in International Finance (2 years) and Aatish Jaisinghani of SYJC enrolled for Bachelors in Commerce (4 years). These students were selected on the basis of their overall academic and extra-curricular performance.
Seminars & Guest Lectures Seminar on Soft Skills Development by KPMG January 9, 2014 Students of H.R. College attended a seminar on Soft Skills Development organized by KPMG. The seminar was divided into four sessions. Effective Communication by Deepika Dev, Human Resources. The session was very interesting as she spoke about the way one must communicate during an interview. Careers, by V. Venkataramanan, Partner – Audit; spoke about career guidance and also his own career. He advised the students to choose a field of interest. Corporate Etiquette by Anupama Lal, Assistant Manager - Human Resources; taught about dress code to be followed for an interview. Skills for Success by Neeraj Shrivastava, Associate Director, Advisory Management, KPMG. Mr. Shrivastava taught two skills for success: Professional skill and Personal skill.
Development & enhancement of soft skills for HR Students
The KPMG seminar was a platform for development & enhancement of soft skills along with a tour of the real corporate world. It was a great learning and enriching experience for the students.
ENACTUS Training Sessions January 13 & 15, 2014 Session On Leadership
IT training session An IT training session was organised by ENACTUS at H.R. College, conducted by Mr. Swapnil More, IIT Mumbai on Jan. 13,2014. Mr. More has been working in the field of spoken tutorials for computer literacy, which is a project under the HRD Ministry of India in collaboration with CACR (Citizens Associations for Child Rights) and IIT.

Mr. Arup Basu, TATA Chemicals, answered questions about entrepreneurship in general and business model development strategies through an interactive question and answer session. Activities and games held at the training session enabled team work.

Seminar about the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants January 22, 2014 Members of the Chopras Institute of Professional Education visited H.R College of Commerce & Economics to conduct an interactive seminar informing the students about the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) which is the global body for professional accountants offering the Chartered Certified Accountant qualification. Students of SYBAF and FYBCOM attended this seminar in which the members of ACCA acquainted the students with the paper pattern and syllabus.

Prof. Fredrik Galtung, Chief Executive Officer and Co – Founder, Integrity Action encouraged the staff & students to present their opinion about integrity and whether in their opinion is it easy to live a life of integrity and values. He explained the concept of Exit, Voice and Loyalty proposed by Albert O. Hirschman. He added how people when facing too much corruption are left with combinations of responses namely Exit, Voice and loyalty. i.e. a person who cannot stand corruption may exit the country, or he may voice his opinion in a country or remains loyal to the law of the land and accepts corruption-the dilemma of most middle class Indians.

Seminar on “Python Language” February 12, 2014 The Math Club of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics organized a seminar on “Python Language”. Presiding over the meet was Dr. Jayant Kirtane, Professor of Computer Science and Engineering; and a member of the Electrical Engineering R&D Lab at Keshav Memorial Institute of Technology Hyderabad. Dr. Kirtane initiated the lecture with “Scratch” a basic computer language that ensured that all the students with or without a computer programming base would grasp the extremely feasible language. In an hour, Dr Jayant Kirtane convincingly explained the benefits of “Python Language” and provided proof of his beliefs.

LECTURE ON TELEVISION PRODUCTION HOUSE & BROADCASTING CHANNELS March 1, 2014 Mr. Ranjit Phatak, Senior Creative director at Bindass was invited to judge Organisational behavior projects for SYBMM students. He conducted a session on the working of Television production house & broadcasting channels like Bindass. The half a day session comprised of various topics like TRPs, working of popular shows like Roadies, Bakra, Coke Studio Reality TV & its future, encompassing Indian audiences in global trends etc. the session was followed by Q & A round.

Harvard Club of India held an Alumni Meet at H.R. College. The students of H.R. College got a rare opportunity to interact with the Business Leaders of the country and speak to them about Career Aspirations of the Youth, the topic of the evening.
Want?'; moderated by Anshul Arora and Vibha Kagzi. Panelists for this session included various students representing H.R. College and Enactus; Mallik Arjun Patil, Shoumi Mittra, Pratic Dugar, Avnish Barjatya and Ritika Sachdev, This session expressed the entrepreneurial spirit amongst the youth. It encouraged the young thinkers to find a motivator, be it money, social problems, their own passion to succeed ahead.
There were three Panel Discussions after which, students could talk to the alumni in smaller groups, much like mentoring sessions. The first panel discussion was about 'Managing Aspirations of the Youth'. The esteemed Panel consisted of Richard Rekhy, CEO, KPMG India; Akhil Gupta, Chairman, Blackstone India; Mini Menon, Executive Editor, Bloomberg TV India; (Moderator) Ganesh Natrajan, CEO, Zensar Technologies and Dr. Indu Shahani, Principal of H.R. College and former Sheriff of Mumbai. The panel emphasized the importance of following dreams with confidence and preserving a thirst for knowledge. They reiterated the importance of keeping humility in the process and believing in one's passion. The second panel was the Youth Panel where five distinct young leaders were invited to speak about aims of the youth and this session was about 'What the Youth Really
The third panel was about 'Managing a Successful Career' and the respected panel included Ipsita Dasgupta, CMO, GE India and Greater China; R. Mukundan, MD, Tata Chemicals; Pramo Selvaratnam, Executive Director, Investment Banking, Goldman Sachs; and (Moderator) Uma Ganesh, CEO, Global Talent Track. It highlighted various aspects like choosing the right mentor, having the right energy, grabbing the right opportunity, always keeping up the cycle of learning and contributing and living upto your own values. The fourth session was the highlight, when students got a chance to directly interact with the guests and get mentored.
Lecture on Hot Capital and Sliding Rupee by Dr. Farrokh Langdana January 21, 2014
Dr. Farrokh Langdana, Professor of Finance & Economics and Director Executive MBA Programme, Rutgers Business School, Newark, USA gave a lecture on Hot Capital and Sliding Rupee. He gave the students an in depth knowledge of three main factors that determine the emergence of a growing economy. He spoke about how decreasing exports and
increasing interest rates are detrimental to a growing economy. He compared the economies and economic policies of USA, China and India. He also spoke about a very interesting phenomenon named 'Bernanke Bubble'. Dr. Langdana demonstrated and related vital economic concepts to daily life activities.
Lecture by Dr. Michael Cohen, Senior Lecturer in Finance, Faculty of Business & Law, Deakin Graduate School of Business January 27, 2014 Dr. Michael Cohen, in a lecture for the first year students of Banking and Insurance provided a detailed overview on the opportunities available for further studies in Australia. Dr. Michael Cohen talked about the different fields of Masters programs provided at Deakin University. The MBA programme ranges from specializations in Finance, Economics, Insurance, Retail business, Management, Marketing, International Relations and many more. He enlightened the students on the various skills they can acquire at Deakin and the way students could learn effective communication, identifying, gathering, evaluation information, understanding problems and different cultures and new kinds of technology in the banking sector.

Lecture by Mr. Shahrokh M. Saudagaran, University of Washington January 27, 2014 In an informative, yet interactive session, Mr. Shahrokh M. Saudagaran, Gary E. and James A. Milgard Endowed Dean, Milgard School of Business, University of Washington, Tacoma; spoke about the various courses like B.A.B.A, MBA, MCL, AACSB and MAcc offered at the Milgard School of Business and the varied placements offered in companies like KPMG, Ernst & Young, Russell, Boeing, Weyerhaeuser, Expedia, Deloitte and Costco. He not only explained the admission process but also threw light on the scholarships offered based on academic grades at the competitive examinations of the applicants. He gave students a few tips on application to any university.

Workshop on "CSR" by MISB Bocconi at Powai January 29, 2014 50 students of BMS, BBI and BFM courses along with faculty members of H.R. College of Commerce & Economics visited the MISB Bocconi (Mumbai International School of Business) at Hiranandani Knowledge Park, Powai. The students attended a workshop on CSR, led by Italian Faculty Prof. Veronica, a subject matter expert from Bocconi Campus Italy. The lecture focused on an innovative concept called "Impact Investing", where businesses attempt to solve society`s problems through business solutions (Social Entrepreneurs).
Adhering to its vision "Classrooms -> Careers -> Communities", HR College is making efforts to enable such exposure to more students across fields like CSR & Social Entrepreneurship.
TEDx@H.R. March 20, 2014 TEDx Live event was a live video stream from the TEDx 2014 Conference which was held in Vancouver. The theme was simply, "The Next Chapter". It was a unique opportunity to see live content straight from the curators of TED. This conference celebrated TED's 30th Anniversary and its mission ‘Ideas worth Spreading’.
SCREENING OF MOVIE ‘LAXMI’ FEBRUARY, 2014 A special screening of the film “Laxmi” was organized for BMM students. The cast & crew of the film- the lead actress Monali Thakur, Director Nagesh Kukunoor, producer Elahe Hiptoola & others interacted with the students. The team spoke about the making, challenges & the ‘experience of the film’. Minors caught in human trafficking & sex trade being the central theme of the film, it was significant for media students studying subjects like Contemporary Issues, Journalism Ethics etc.
Exploring Global Dimensions Workshop on Growth Coaching January 6, 2014
Ms. Jan Alen, Consultant with Growth Coaching International, Austalia conducted a workshop “Growth Coaching” for faculty. Jan is the Foundational Director of Programs at the Queensland Education Leadership Institute (QELi). It was designed to build the coaching skills of faculty members so they can effectively support the development of others, address performance management issues and enhance levels of motivation and commitment.
University of South Australia January 9, 2014 Ms. Daljit Rao, Lecturer Department of Management, University of South Australia visited the campus. She addressed the students on the Social Environment of Business. She discussed the hospitality business and strategic issues hoteliers would encounter and prepare for if they set up business there. Ms Rao also shared her insights on Education and life in Australia
The Business History of American Film January 16, 2014 “The Business History of American Film” challenged students at the HR College to consider business history as a prominent engine of change in the U.S. film industry. Rather than focusing on changing artistry or cinema techniques, this talk featured the business history of film technology, studios, the Production Code, and unions as they shaped the industry over time. At the close of his talk, Dr. White drew connections to the concentration of Bollywood film production within Mumbai.
Dr. Timothy R. White has been an Assistant Professor of Urban History at NJCU, USA. Using what he learns, Dr. White will Dr. Timothy White offer a summer class at NJCU entitled “From Hollywood to Bollywood: the Business History of Film in L.A., NYC, and Mumbai”.

A 90 minute creative workshop on Design Thinking for students was conducted by Indian School of Design and Innovation, Parsons Mumbai to connect with what they are passionate about and find profitable ideas for Entrepreneurship. Soumitra Bhat, Leader Creative Entrepreneurship and Poonam Mishra, Leader Fashion Business Management were the facilitators of the programme.
