CONTEXT UNDERSTANDING OF URBAN MULTI TRANSPORTATION HUBS TOD PROECT PRECIDENT PROJECTS PROPOSED MASTER PLAN PROPOSED TRANSPORTATION INTERCHANGE STATION

What is Urban design... Urban design is the process of designing and shaping the physical features of cities, towns and villages and planning for the provision of municipal services to residents and visitors. In contrast to architecture, which focuses on the design of individual buildings, urban design deals with the larger scale of groups of buildings, streets and public spaces, whole neighborhoods and districts, and entire cities, with the goal of making urban areas functional, attractive, and sustainable. Urban design is an inter-disciplinary field that utilizes elements of many built environment professions, including landscape architecture, urban planning, architecture, civil engineering and municipal engineering.

What is TOD... In urban planning, a transit-oriented development (TOD) is a type of urban development that maximizes the amount of residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of public transport. In doing so, TOD aims to increase public transport ridership by reducing the use of private cars and by promoting sustainable urban growth. A TOD typically includes a central transit stop (such as a train station, or light rail or bus stop) surrounded by a high-density mixed-use area, with lower-density areas spreading out from this center. A TOD is also typically designed to be more walkable than other built-up areas, through using smaller block sizes and reducing the land area dedicated to automobiles. The densest areas of a TOD are normally located within a radius of 400 to 800 m around the central transit stop, as this is considered to be an appropriate scale for pedestrians, thus solving the last mile problem.

rOTTErdaM CENTral sTaTiON Location : Rotterdam, Netherlands. Area : 46000 m2 Year : 2014

It is one of the most important transport hubs in the Netherlands. It is also connected to the light rail system, Randstad rail.It is larger, brighter and more orderly than former. It beautifully complements both efficiency of the high speed stop and the Rotterdam city’s bold ambitious for urban development and renewal.

Rotterdam Central is the most important station in Rotterdam and was opened in 1847. Rotterdam Centraal station is equipped with 13 platforms .Trains that pass through this station are bound for Breukelen, Amsterdam, Utrecht, Zeist and Rhenen and all are operated by Dutch railway company. Before World War II, Rotterdam did not have a central railway station - instead there were four stations in and around the city centre: 1. Rotterdam Delftsche Poort: for westbound trains towards Schiedam, Den Haag HS and Amsterdam CS and eastbound trains towards Dordrecht 2. Rotterdam Beurs: towards Dordrecht, connected to Delftsche Poort 3. Rotterdam Maas: terminus for eastbound trains to Gouda and Utrecht 4. Rotterdam Hofplein: terminus for the Hofpleinlijn, an alternative line to Den Haag HS, also going to Scheveningen.

To the south of central station there are public recreational spaces like museums, movie theaters. The city square is in front of the station. To the north is resedential area.

Approach To the north of the station is the residential area. Facade for a modest, transparent hallway that blended with the character of the late nineteenth-century Proveniers district. Here, we avoided any major expansion and focused on improving the existing landscaping in the immediate vicinity of the station. To the south of the station has a public space i.e city square. The facade of this side is showing a huge scale which welcomes people. And thers is a connecting tunnel which connects both north and south side beaneth the station.

Bicycle Station plannner provides 5200 icycle parking in station structure.

Bicycle

Parking Station planners provided parking for 750 cars and 5,200 bicycles in structures hidden underneath the esplanade, and additional bicycle parking on the north side. There is limited street parking on the north side of the station, but access to the western side is via bus and taxi only. As a result, the station can be experienced as a remarkably carfree environment. Many people access the station by bicycle, especially on the northern side, Car parking is equally restricted around the station.

If planned at the right scale, even a very-high volume HSR station does not necessarily need to overwhelm or destroy the quaint character of a residential neighborhood, located immediately adjacent to it.Barrier effects can be diminished by key physical design features, such as a façade designed to blend into the area, and a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel that gets residents to the other side of the tation in minutes, without even having to enter the station itself. Businesses do not necessarily need to suffer during the construction process, as long as care is taken to diminish disruption, and temporary uses are offered that may attract customers. The station’s iconic architecture, and in particular its striking southern façade, not only landed the station on a long list of prestigious architectural magazines, but also presented a real opportunity for image- and identity-building in the city, creating a new reason for civic pride in a city that was already known for its knack for modern architecture.
