President’s Report

You may be aware that at the end of September this year, Porsche demerged from Volkswagen to become a separate Company, although VW still retains around 75% of the new Company’s shareholding. Porsche has now become the number one European automotive manufacturer in terms of capital value. The listing of shares in Porsche is intended to help VW raise money to invest in electric vehicles and its push into developing software as it tries to match Tesla. There was also an acknowledgement from Porsche that the 911 will be the only car in its line-up not to turn electric. Andrew Dalton has prepared an article on the demerger that is included in this magazine. Looking ahead, the 50th anniversary of the formation of the Porsche Club Queensland will be celebrated in 2024. Next year, planning for the event will begin in earnest. To make the anniversary a success, ideas and suggestions will be sought from members so that we can develop an appropriate celebration for this milestone. Our Awards night will be held on Saturday 4th February 2023 at The Emporium Hotel in South Bank. The evening will consist of a recap of the events of 2022, Motorsport and Concours Awards’ presentations, Club Person of the Year, and the award of Life Memberships, interspersed with a laugh or two, fine food and drinks, and possibly a guest speaker or maybe two. The November committee meeting will hopefully finalise the main components of the evening, allowing members to register for the event from November onwards. From a personal point of view, my 1986 Porsche 911 is currently being restored by David Stirling and his team at Styling Automotive and the engine refreshed by Don Munro. After 36 years of life, the car was due for a make-over. It started off as a strip to remove the existing paint and panels, repair any minor damage and rust, paint and reassemble the car. There is always “a however”; the right-hand side of the car had suffered damage that had bent the front and rear frame which required straightening. The result was that nine panels on the damaged side and the front of the car were replaced. As for the motor, which had powered the car for 240,000 kilometres, it was still in good condition with the pistons and liners still within tolerances. The motor is remaining standard as per the factory settings. A new 180-amp alternator has been installed to cater for an electrical air conditioning unit which will reside at the front of the car.

There has been a marked increase in the number of articles submitted by members for this issue of the magazine. The Committee greatly appreciates this effort, as our diligent editor is not hounding, sorry requesting, numerous articles from the rest of the Committee.

WORLD’S No. 1

A world of experience makes the difference

From the Editor’s Desk

That’s it. Another year done and dusted although it can be argued that none have been tougher and not only for our club. It proves the old adage, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Covid and wet weather couldn’t deter our dedicated track addicts, and thanks to the hard work of all our committee we enter a new year in great shape with lots to come including the Christmas (in February) party. In this edition a new member tells us of his Porsche journey, the Brisbane Motor Museum takes us through the Motorclassica held in the Melbourne Exhibition Buildings with some only dreamed of cars on display. Justin Clarke invites us to join him on his journey to Phillip Island, and who missed the distinguished Gentlemans Drive? A couple of members share their projects with us including the electric 928. We’ll keep you posted on how many AA batteries that it’s going to need or maybe there’s other plans. Gav is actually keen to get inputs so it’s a project to follow. I also received a letter from the original owner of a 1973 911S who is willing to pass on the original documentation. Hopefully the owner is one of our members and can benefit from his information. May you all have a wonderful Christmas and new year and may the fuel prices drop 50%!

Dear Editor, I am the original purchaser of a 1973 Viper Green 911S, ordered from Scuderia Veloce Motors, Lindfield under the Tourist Delivery scheme at the time. Chassis No. 29684.68 … Order Date 7th Jan 1973 I understand that the current owner is resident in Queensland, and possibly could be known to you. I also believe that this car has recently been refuirbished/restored. I write to say that I have found a trove of original documents relating to this purchase and other matters both here and in the UK. If in fact, this gent is known to you, feel free to pass on this message. Many thanks. Brian Budd. bb999@bigpond.com Women with Drive I was born into a family

Natalie Dugdale of motorsport enthusiasts in Christchurch New Zealand, where my father and uncles were involved with the Canterbury Motorsport Club. My father always joked I was conceived at Lady Wigram Annual Car Race in 1966, as I was born exactly nine months later. Every year the family attended Lady Wigram and travelled the length of the South Island to attend motorsport events. At the age of 15, I got my driver’s licence and highjacked my mother’s purple Ford Escort MKII and the rest is history… My involvement in motorsport has mostly been on the track and my first official track day was with the Porsche Club Queensland at Morgan Park Raceway in 2019. I attended the entrée category and had our Motorsport Director – Kevin Vedelago as my mentor. From this point I attended most PCQ track days and ICC events, up until I went overseas in August 2021. In 2020 I registered for my first tarmac rally, Targa Great Barrier Reef – Tour, but due to COIVD-19 I couldn’t attend. Next, I had my sights on Targa Tasmania – Tour, but in 2021 I was fully committed to sail racing and couldn’t afford Targa, so I decided to leave the car at home and volunteer as an Official. At Targa Tasmania I was the start line official and at Great Barrier Reef I was a Deputy Stage Director. Targa is an amazing community, and I will return as an Official in 2023. I love taking my 718 Cayman to the track as it is a safe environment and at first it was about driving faster than what is legally allowed on the road. Then the competitive monster came out in me and I had some coaching with Josh Hunt @ Volante Rosso. I started to learn about techniques and developed better driving skills and my times started to improve considerably. I like the friendly rivalry of the other drivers within my category, while we are all playing for sheep stations, everyone is willing to help each other. At the end of each round, we all congratulate each other on a great drive or great times achieved. Moving forward to 2023, my focus will be sailing and the Sydney to Hobart campaign on New Zealand registered boat, Silver Fern. I will continue to attend track events with PCQ as time allows in 2023 and hopefully return fully to motorsport in 2024.
