IDEAL DAY

14 AZFOOTHILLS.COM

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF DENNIS WILENCHIK % " $$ " & "$ ##

I need no alarm clock. My beautiful orange-and-white freckled English Setter, Lizzie, wakes me up like clockwork every morning by sticking her head on my bed in my Paradise Valley home.

As I sit up in bed, my English Bulldog, Lily, wakes up as well. Both my dogs insist on me taking them out in the backyard. Lizzie loves to run around the grass and the ponds—and sometimes in them. Lily loves to just do her business and get back in to rest.

I go into the kitchen to feed and water the dogs. They are always excited even though I feed them pretty much the same thing every day and night. Pretty much the same with me, actually. Creatures of habit.

I microwave and toast my waffles with fresh strawberries and blueberries. I have Naked fruit juice and coffee with no-sugar vanilla creamer and stevia. I try to sit down to enjoy the morning news on CBS, as I have been loyal to the network since I was lucky enough to be a page at the CBS studio headquarters when I was a young man growing up in New York City.

I take my numerous vitamins in a GNC Pack and then various supplements. I take my daily sniff of Flonase to clear my head and then a daily shot of insulin with a Levemir FlexPen. I have been very lucky and overall very healthy. I then try to work out with some pushups and barbells.

The dogs growl and want their chew bones. Lizzie gets a rawhide bone, and Lily gets a busy bone. I watch them fight over them every day and then settle down to their daily treat while I finish breakfast while watching the news.

I will usually go to lunch with my son or someone in the community at Avanti, Durant’s, the Phoenix Country Club or University Club. I really love Italian food but have to watch my diet. My favorite is eggplant parmigiana and ravioli with spinach. I love extra sauce and baked mozzarella on top. Durant’s has the best apple-chicken-walnut salad. ! In my ideal day, I would be flying to San Diego. We used to have our own jet, but it was damaged in a storm and so we had to sell it to the insurance carrier. I miss it. Now, I fly Southwest. I would go to home right off the beach in La Jolla, which is my safe haven from the world. I usually will go to my boat, “The Volante, a wonderful Chris Craft Corsair I keep at the Hyatt dock in Mission Bay and listen to music and read. Then, I will stop at the Mission Bay Yacht Club, work out and swim at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.

! I love to eat at a little Italian cafeteria on a corner near the club. After a glass of wine, a salad and some spaghetti with meatballs, I go home contented. When in Paradise Valley, I will go to the Sanctuary Spa at Sanctuary on Camelback and then have a drink at jade bar or at the Phoenix Country Club.

! I catch up on work and e-mails with friends on the computer or mini iPad while watching TV—usually with a Western or James Bond 007 movie in the background—and then head to bed. I have no idea how to use Twitter or Facebook or any of that stuff. I kneel by my bed and say my prayers for a wonderful life and all my family and terrific people who make it such a joy to be alive, and think of my next trip to somewhere exotic and fall asleep happy, waiting for the next morning.

I shave and shower and then read my iPad for e-mail messages and news from azcentral.com, Wall Street Journal and New York Times. I head to the master closet to dress for the day. Usually a suit and tie.

Get into my new metallic dark blue Maserati convertible, which is now my car of choice. I head to our office building in midtown Phoenix. Have coffee at work, and review e-mails, paperwork and schedule with my assistant, Lisa.

I see my son at work. He is a terrific young lawyer who handles many pro bono cases because he has a heart of gold. I am always amazed at how good a lawyer he is with very little training from me. Both of our kids are the pride and joy of my life. [Daughter Caitlin is a former Face of Foothills winner.]

I will generally return e-mails and phone calls or have meetings with clients or associates at our law firm, Wilenchik and Bartness, P.C., throughout the day, if I do not have to be in court. I try to then keep up on any reading as there is a lot of it in practicing law and handling court arguments, depositions or trials.

BUZZ travel. WINTER PARK SUMMER VILLAGE

STORY BY DAVID M BROWN HEN THE SKIS GET STOWED, the Rockies offer numerous summer opportunities at and around worldfamous resorts and areas like Winter Park, Powderhorn Mountain Resort, Purgatory Resort, Aspen Snowmass and Telluride. Quality accommodations are available at the resorts and in the nearby cities and towns, restaurants of every kind are a draw themselves, all areas have nearby airports and are easily accessible from the Valley by direct or scenic routes. Winter Park Ski Resort, about an hour-and-20-minute drive from Denver, is celebrating its 75th season and the 100th anniversary of nearby Rocky Mountain National Park, whose west entrance, and famed Trail Ridge Road, is 45 minutes from Winter Park and nearby Fraser. The 3,000-acre resort—in an area monikered Mountain Bike Capital USA for its 600 miles of trails—has the fastest growing lift-serviced mountain

bike park in the United States, Trestle Bike Park at Winter Park Resort. Other activities await: Colorado’s longest Alpine Slide, hiking, children’s zip-line, human maze, scenic chairlift rides, putting course, bungee-trampoline jump and a kids’ bouncy house, says Steve Hurlbert, director of public relations. Purgatory Resort, the former Durango Mountain Resort, is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this winter, 2015/2016, in the sublime San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado, just 20 minutes from historic Durango, which offers many vernal activities and a diversity of accommodations and dining. New for this summer at the resort is Purgatory Park, with stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, peddle boats and fishing in the lake and an ADA-accessible playground and trail system, just across Highway 550 from the resort, says Kim Oyler, director of communications. Two hours from Durango, and

about an hour from Montrose, Telluride Ski & Golf Resort is set in the highest concentration of 13,000and 14,000-foot peaks in the state, so hiking, biking, paddle boarding, trail rides, fly-fishing and whitewater rafting are extremely popular. “Telluride’s unique setting allows for hiking right out of town, or even your hotel door, eliminating the need to drive to a trailhead, says C. Pepper Raper, assistant communications manager for the resort. “A favorite activity is the 4x4 or Jeep tours offered throughout the old mining roads crisscrossing the Northern San Juans. They offer a glimpse into Telluride’s rich mining history and lead to some of the most beautiful vistas in the state. Mountain biking is big, as is wine, in the Powderhorn Mountain Resort area: It’s Colorado’s wine country with 22 wineries. Here, enjoy 300 lakes; golf at five beautiful public courses; and shopping in downtown Grand Junction, says Dusti Reimer, marketing and sales coordinator for the resort.

Colorado National Monument features the remarkable 23-mile-long Rim Rock Drive, and Grand Mesa Scenic Byway, over Grand Mesa, is the largest flattop mountain in the world at 10,000 feet and the home of Powderhorn Mountain Resort. And, at Aspen Snowmass, events and activities include scenic gondola and lift rides, ballooning and paragliding, golf, tennis, rafting, free outdoor music and yoga and more. And, the glam town of Aspen offers cultural events like the Aspen Santa Fe ballet, the summer music festival and Aspen Ideas Festival. Near Glenwood Springs, Aspen Snowmass comprises the town of Aspen, the four mountain ski areas of Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Snowmass and Buttermilk as well as Snowmass Village. “We honestly have more going on in the summer compared to the winter,” says Tucker Vest Burton, public relations assistant manager for the Aspen Skiing Company.

FUN FOR FAMILIES RENEWAL FOR ADULTS “I think what makes Aspen so special is the concept ‘Mind, Body, Spirit’ that was introduced by Walter Paepcke back in the 1940’s,” Burton says. “It’s the idea that when visitors come to Aspen their whole daily life and routine is thrown out the door and replaced with a deeper sense of self and in a place that brings out pure happiness.” Mind? “That could mean attending a local film at the Wheeler Opera House meant to spur discussion or enjoying a play at Theatre Aspen.” Body? “That could mean mountaintop yoga or participating in mountain biking for the first time.” And spirit? “That means enjoying the outdoors on a deeper level that renews the spirit. It all ties together to make Aspen a special place as we still believe in imbibing the mantra of Mind, Body, Spirit every day. It’s what makes this place so special.” Summer offerings include the Pro Cycling Challenge, Aug. 19−20 (for the Aspen Stages); Wanderlust, July 2−5; JAS Aspen Snowmass, Sept. 4−6; and Tough Mudder, Sept. 12−13. Families will also enjoy activities like Camp Aspen Snowmass, private camping trips, climbing wall, horseback riding and mountainboarding. “My favorites are

the free mountaintop yoga on Aspen Mountain, visiting the iconic Maroon Bells [two fourteeners in the Elk Mountains, about 12 miles southwest of Aspen], free Snowmass music concerts and classical concerts on top of Aspen Mountain and mountain biking at Bike Snowmass,” Burton says. Telluride is small, with an all-year population fewer than 3,000, but every summer weekend is a festival, many involving music. These include the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Telluride Jazz Celebration, both 35-plus years running, as well as the 21st Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival, the Telluride Art + Architecture weekend, July 18 and 19, and, new this year, the Telluride Festival of Cars and Colors, Sept. 24−27. Connected by a free gondola, the area consists of Mountain Village, where visitors can play Telluride Ski & Golf Club’s 18-hole public course and the historic town of Telluride. “Coming from Phoenix, it’s easy to get to via direct flight and is a great place to beat the heat, enjoy some of your favorite activities, and try some new ones,” Raper says. “There’s art, food, wine, adventure and the simple enjoyment of the outdoors in the heart of one of the most beautiful settings in the country.”

BIKING ZIPLINING AND THE LINKS TOO Overlooking the Grand Valley near Grand Junction, Powderhorn has just started building a high-speed quad chair lift that will take skiers, mountain bikers and hikers to the top of the mountain in six and a half minutes as well as cutting mountain biking trails. “Grand Junction is a different side of Colorado, a land of majestic mesas and soaring sandstone monuments shaped by geology, wind, and water,” Reimer says. In July, events include the Webe Dirt Bike Race Series, July 11 and 12; The Mud, The Bands & The Beers Festival, July 25; Western Slope Uncorked, a wine and music event, Aug. 1 at the resort; the 24th annual Colorado Mountain Winefest in Palisade, Sept. 17−20; and Color Sunday, Sept. 27. Summer activities at Purgatory Resort started in the late 1960’s with a scenic chairlift ride, and today Purgatory Resort is known for its family-friendly

activities. And the Durango area offers hiking and mountain bike trails, river sports, the historic train ride from Durango to Silverton, downtown shopping, restaurants and galleries, scenic byway, and more. Purgatory Resort features exciting events all summer: Music in the Mountains Festival, July 18–Aug. 2; Muck & Mire Mud Adventure 10k, 5k and Kids Mud Run, Aug. 8; and the Mushroom Festival, Aug. 22. And, at Winter Park Resort and the town of Winter Park, visitors can enjoy Fraser Tuesdays Picnic in the Park, through August; High-Note Thursdays, through August; Mountain Bike Capital USA Weekend concerts, July 11 and 12; Winter Park Jazz Festival, July 18 and 19; Colorado Freeride Festival and Village Bike Fest, July 23−July 26; SolShine, Aug. 1; and Winter Park Music Festival, Aug. 15. Winter Park is the only resort in North America with three lifts dedicated to mountain bikers. With a summit of 10,800 feet, Trestle Bike Park offers 1,800 feet of vertical drop. In addition, Winter Park Resort also offers familyfriendly activities like the two-track Alpine Slide, Colorado’s longest, and the Zephyr Express Scenic Chairlift: Ride to the 10,700-foot summit. And, at Granby Ranch, the scenic 18-hole golf course accommodates players of all abilities. “The weather is absolutely perfect,” Hurlbert says. “Highs during the day range in the mid-70’s and nights are cool and clear. The scenery is beautiful. There is a great saying locals have here in Colorado: ‘They came for the winter and stayed for the summer.’”

THE DANCER’S

CIRCUIT STORY BY LISA ROBINS

With some dedication and consistency, look forward to creating long, lean lines from your hips, all the way down to your toes. If you are longing for long, lean legs that dancers are famous for, shake up your current lower-body training regimen and incorporate some isolation moves that will strengthen and lengthen your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves. These exercises can be performed while holding a ballet barre or even a sturdy chair for balance. For more of a challenge, try a no-hands approach by using your core for balance. Want more? Grab hold of a light set of dumbbells to increase the overall intensity of the work. To truly benefit from the stretching and toning results of the dancer’s circuit, hit it at least three alternating days per week, completing three to four rounds of the entire circuit per session. These exercises are recommended to be done barefoot to additionally strengthen the joints in the ankles and feet. LEG SWEEPS: Perform 30 repetitions per leg and then switch

to the opposite side. - -

-

-

Stand with your left leg in front, right leg crossed behind it. Standing tall, press up onto your left toe, lifting your left heel off the ground as you kick up your right leg to the side directly from your hip, toe pointed. As you return the right leg down, drop your left heel to the floor and cross your right leg behind your left. Bend both knees and squat into a plié with both legs. Repeat the exercise by raising the right leg back up again.

- -

GLUTE RAISES: Perform 30 repetitions per leg and then switch to the opposite side. - - -

CROSS JUMPS: Perform 30 jumps at a time. - - - -

Stand tall with right leg crossed over left. Bend your knees into a plié. Jump up with toes pointed and open your legs. Before landing back down, cross the left leg in front of the right leg and bend your knees back to a plié. Repeat and continue to cross and plié, so the front leg alternates for each repetition.

Slowly sweep your right leg around toward the front of the room, maintaining a straight, long extension in the leg. Bend your right knee and place your right ankle on the inside of your left knee and stand tall.

-

Stand tall with your heels under your hips. Drop your upper body, keeping your chest square to the floor and reach back with your right leg, toe pointed. Bend your left knee and raise your straightened right leg and squeeze your glute. Straighten your left knee and simultaneously lower your right leg so it is a few inches off the floor. Lift and lower, repeating the exercise on one side at a time until all required repetitions are completed.

You can find Lisa Robin’s Power Barre program at The Village at Camelback or train with her at Orangetheory Fitness, McCormick Ranch.

REVERSE FAN KICKS: Perform 30 repetitions per leg and

then switch to the opposite side. - - - -

Stand tall with both heels under your hips. Slightly bend your left knee and lower your upper body so your chest is square to the floor. Reach back with your right leg straight and a strong pointed toe. Rotate your right leg so the top of your foot is now facing the front of the room rather than the floor.

VAN DYKE LASER & SKIN VANDYKELASER COM

From daily skin care to spa treatments, Dr. Susan Van Dyke discusses how to repair sun-damaged skin during the summer months.

I

LOVE SKIN. I have to; I am a dermatologist, and skin is my life. I have to say that it breaks my heart to see beautiful skin laid out under the summer sun—frying, getting old, growing skin cancer. One of my sons once asked if I was afraid of putting myself out of business by singing the praises of sun protection and sun-damage prevention. One look at the pool at any Arizona resort and I think we all know that my business is secure for some time to come. Sun damage happens. This is not going to be a lecture on the evils of our lifestyle choices. This is going to be an uplifting, optimistic and happy look at what science has given us to remedy the damage that is done as well as the damage that is still going on. (I do draw the line at tanning beds, though: no indoor tanning.) An ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure, but thank goodness we have a pound (or more) of cure.

Skin Care Most women are conditioned to put creams on their faces daily; many men are getting the message too. Skin care has become one of our best tools to repair sun damage and all of the associated bad stuff. The original skin repair cream, Retin A, has come a long way. Over the counter and better tolerated, there is no reason to not make a Retin A product (known as retinols) your nighttime cream or lotion. The benefit: reduced risk of wrinkles and precancers, maybe even skin cancers. Another must-have: growth factors (and peptides). These products stimulate the skin’s desire to make collagen and elastic fibers. Collagen and elastic fibers are casualties of chronic sun exposure. The benefit: firmer, more lifted and stretchable skin. Let’s not forget sunspots. Brightening agents, all the rage in Asia for years, are now appearing in the United States. They contain ingredients that discourage pigment formation. The benefit: brighter, more even-toned skin with a minimum of freckling and age spots (reduced melasma as well).

Spa Treatments Spas have aestheticians and laser techs and can provide gentle treatments for sun-ravaged skin. Light chemical peels with fun names like Rejuvenize, Vitalize and VIP peel encourage increased cell growth while gently stripping away superficial spots and roughness. Mild laser treatments like Clear and Brilliant and Photofacial do the same with fewer treatments but still with almost no downtime.

Medical Spa Treatments With the addition of medical personnel, the lasers available increase with more improvement in sun damage, laxity and skin quality in fewer treatments, sometimes with just one treatment. Fraxel have been popular for years and is FDA-approved for treating severe sun damage like precancers. It also does an amazing job on sunspots and other pigmentation. CO2 laser (frequently referred to as Active FX, Deep FX or Total FX) is the grandfather of all lasers, made popular more than 20 years ago and still the gold standard for resurfacing. Expect that the stronger the treatment, the better the results, the longer the recovery and the fewer the treatments needed. Consider Fraxel to be a moderate procedure: one to six treatments, three or four days of redness and mild swelling. CO2 is a strong procedure: one treatment, a week of downtime and great results. It is always much easier to maintain great skin than to reverse the damage done by lifestyle, but if you were not good to your skin when you had the chance, there are still options. Take the time to consult a cosmetic dermatologist to explore those options. And don’t forget your sunscreen.

FRESCA SHRIMP WRAP Light enough for a summer meal yet filling enough to keep the whole family happy, whip up this easy wrap from Joya Terrace at Omni Scottsdale Resort & Spa at Montelucia. RECIPE 2 C Small peeled shrimp Juice from three lemons Salt, to taste 4 Whole-grain tortillas (12 inches) ½ C Garlic aioli (see recipe) 4 oz. Baby spinach 1 C Pico de gallo 1 Avocado, sliced 1 tsp. Agave nectar Garlic Aioli: 1 head Garlic Olive oil ¼ C Water 4 C Mayonnaise Salt and pepper, to taste

AIOLI Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Cut the top off the head of garlic and place, cut side up, on a piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle with olive oil. Wrap the foil loosely around the garlic, and roast in the oven for 40 minutes and allow to cool. Once the garlic is cool, squeeze the cloves out of the papery husk into a blender. Add the water, and blend until smooth. Mix in the mayonnaise, and season with salt and pepper. WRAP: Put two quarts of water in a saucepan big enough to cook the shrimp. Add a handful of salt and the lemon juice, and bring to a boil. Once the water is boiling, add the shrimp until cooked (four to six minutes). Remove the shrimp, and cool in an ice bath. Warm the tortillas for a minute in the microwave, and lay them flat on the counter. Spread one-fourth of the garlic aioli onto each tortilla about one-third of the way up from the bottom of the tortilla. Layer one ounce of spinach on each, as well as one-fourth cup of pico de gallo. Layer in the avocado slices. Add half cup of chilled shrimp to each, and drizzle with agave nectar. Roll the tortilla like a burrito by bringing the bottom of the tortilla over the filling, and pull tight. Fold in the two sides, and roll into a tight burrito.
