From The Editor in Chief

“Family is the most important thing in the world.” The sound of young feet running back and forth, the squeal of high-pitched laughter, noisy sibling spats, and the silence of a mid-day naptime: all sounds that we can imagine in a bustling household. Of course, families come in all ages, combinations, and sizes, but the images conjured by these sounds of a vibrant family home are what, for many of us, says “family.” Of all the issue themes we explore each year, the Family Homes issue is our readers’ favorite—I think because home life and family life is so relatable. For a family, a home really has to “work”—to foster a sense of belonging and peace in the midst of the constant coming and going. In this issue, designer Kim Brockinton brings to life a French country-inspired home in the Arkansas countryside. Her personal fondness—as well as her clients’—for all things European infuses this gorgeous home and surrounding property with an Old World warmth and elegance. Another home, designed by Kimberly Harper of Springdale’s Harper Howey Interiors, is full of airy, open spaces. There’s plenty of room for a family of six to roam about freely and enjoy time shared in the common spaces, and there are also cozy nooks, where each person can take a break for some quiet time alone. I have no doubt that this beautiful West Little Rock home will inspire you to bring some of its surprising design details into your own home. And we certainly couldn’t forget about those newest (and tiniest) members of the family! Melissa Haynes of MH Design shares with us the perfect space she has created for her newborn daughter. It’s a room that’s sure to delight those in love with all things pink. And, finally, a member of our own staff gives us a peek into her newly created, handsome nursery for her infant son. From a play zone for the youngest member of the family to a private space for the master of the house, the rooms we bring you in this issue are some of my alltime favorites, and I know you’ll find a few to add to your list too!

THE WALMART MUSEUM

SARA KATHRYN’S LTD.

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS

Home to the University of Arkansas, a number of thriving industries, and a vibrant art, music, and cultural community, this corner of the state is as much of a hub for weekend getaways as it is for family living. Check out a few of our favorite stops in the area.

AREA ATTRACTIONS From athletics to art, Northwest Arkansas is home to a wide variety of events, museums, and recreational spaces. Perhaps none is better known than The Walmart Museum (479-273-1329, corporate.walmart. com), located on the town square in downtown Bentonville. The museum’s interactive exhibits tell the story of the small-town dime store and how it became a leading global retailer, and it is all housed in the original location of Sam Walton’s famous 5 & 10. Be sure to stop in at the Spark Café Soda Fountain for an old-fashioned treat.

While you’re in town, head to the offices of Bentonville USA (479-2719153, bentonville.org) on East Central Avenue. Their friendly chamber staff can help to make your trip to the area enjoyable and memorable. Whether you’re en route to Bentonville or onthe-go, their website will give you the latest community information. For specific events and happenings, check out Downtown Bentonville (479-2540254, downtownbentonville.org), which is “at the heart of the city’s social scene.” Visit the website or contact their office to learn more about upcoming festivals, appearances by live entertainers, and the downtown farmers’ market.

LOCAL FINDS The area is also home to a number of unique clothing and home décor boutiques, including Fayetteville’s Sara Kathryn’s Ltd. (479-444-9991, sarakathryns.com), which recently relocated to 1160 North College Street. Carrying fine home lines such as Lampe Berger, Vietri, Annie Glass, Pine Cone Hill, and Bella Notte bedding, the store is a must-visit for all your home and gift needs. They also offer a well-stocked selection of bridal registry items, as well as the latest and cutest in Razorback tailgating wares. August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 27

THE WINNER

IS...

After reading this excerpt from homeowner Curtis Chatham’s entry letter and seeing the desolate pictures of his front yard, we longed to make it a place where the entire neighborhood could gather.

“We bought our old Hillcrest home just a year ago. We had to do MASSIVE renovations and updates, inside and out. We ended up going WAY over budget leaving little for landscaping. She is an absolutely gorgeous house but she doesn’t have a shred of landscaping…I have a 5 year old that can’t even play in the yard because it is nothing but mud.” —CURTIS CHATHAM

THIS SPRING, THE EDITORIAL TEAM OF AT HOME IN ARKANSAS AND CHRIS H. OLSEN REVIEWED HUNDREDS OF ENTRIES TO OUR SECOND-ANNUAL CURB APPEAL CONTEST. THIS MONTH, WE’RE EXCITED TO REVEAL THE WINNING ENTRY AND ITS NEW DESIGN. S T O R Y: T I F FA N Y A D A M S P H O T O G R A P H Y: R E T T P E E K ST YLING: CHIP JONES

CHRIS’S INITIAL IMPRESSION

“This house was screaming for help! When I saw the images, I knew I had to rescue it. From the start, it had great potential. I believe every home has its own life and personality, and this one just needed to be revived.”

After looking at initial plans, Chris and the homeowners—along with their oldest son—started the design process at Olsen’s newly opened North Little Rock nursery, Plantopia. Here, they looked at shrubbery, including azaleas, for foundational plantings in the beds. Olsen also showed them how to add pops of color with seasonal plantings. Next, they visited Olsen’s Botanica Gardens in Little Rock to find boxwoods for use at the sidewalk entry and along the corners of the home’s foundation. Here, their young son Corey was delighted to help pick the colors for the new outdoor furniture. Finally, it was time to select lighting to accentuate the updates. Olsen and the homeowners visited with Little Rock’s Light Innovations to select path lights and uplighting that illuminate the newly planted areas.

Anthurium planted in terra cotta pots give the look of a flame burning in the outdoor lanterns.

“The finished project is amazing. Not only does our yard look better, but the makeover has fixed several problems we had with the yard. We enjoy it every night from the front porch and have had numerous compliments from our neighbors. What I enjoy the most is being able to watch my 5-year-old son and his friends run around the front yard barefooted—something they could never do before.” —CURTIS CHATHAM

LED garden uplights from Light Innovations are a longlasting option that may save you energy and are suitable for cold temperatures.

One of the biggest transformations was in removing the small, existing walkway and replacing it with a modern-style grid of traditional gray flagstone. This mix of classic and contemporary is a nod to the homeowners’ two different design preferences. This uninterrupted area also provides plenty of turf space for the kids to play. Olsen also extended the length of the front steps that lead up to the house from the street. This, coupled with classic ‘wintergreen’ boxwoods, helped to create a sense of grandeur at the entrance. Three separate seating areas—including a porch swing, dining table and chairs, and Adirondack chairs offer an abundance of relaxation options. The pieces are all from Olsen’s Jhemajang (hem-a-jang) furniture line, which encourages mixing different designs for chairs, benches, and tables.

Little Rock-based interior designer Kim Brockinton shares how she created a European-inspired country home that lives up to its own grandeur yet maintains a welcoming sense of warmth. By layering refined and rustic elements and allowing the natural evolution of the property’s character to enhance its beauty, she has guided the homeowners to an ample and amiable home place that stands a world apart.

40 At Home in Arkansas | August 2015

In the kitchen, layers of natural textures, from the terra cotta floor tiles to the limestone countertops and vent hood, give the room an earthy feel. Above the range, a hand-painted bucolic scene introduces art in an unexpected place. Facing page: A custom mix of mustardcolored stucco gives the home a sun-faded, Mediterranean look. The dappled effect of the roof is created by multi-colored slate tiles.

At Home in Arkansas: You’ve described the style of this home as French country, or provincial. What are the key characteristics of homes of that style, and where do we see them in this project?

Kim Brockinton: My first love is the European style of architecture—it can be formal or relaxed. And I have always been drawn to the countryside, whether it be Provence, Tuscany, or the Cotswolds in England. So this

project was special—as if I were working in my own home. The home and property have all of the elements typically associated with the French country and provincial style: a soft color palette—in this case a sun-washed yellow hue, a multi-colored slate roof, rustic beams, and natural stone floors (especially the antique terra cotta inside the house), an array of outbuildings, and a lush landscape with both wild and planted flowers and vines. August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 41

In the dining area, Brockinton creates a delicate-yet-rustic space, with feminine chair silhouettes, plush cushions affixed with bows to woven seats, exposed, roughhewn ceiling beams, and ample draperies featuring a rooster motif and finished with pompom trim. Facing page: In the family room, which encompasses a breakfast area as well as a hearthside seating area, the flooring is a parquet of reclaimed alder wood and antique terra cotta tiles. The draperies, which frame the view out to the poolside living area, are navy with a pattern of gold fretwork and are tied back with large, gold tassels.

What were the homeowners’ main requests and how did you satisfy them? What do they now enjoy most about their home?

The owners had a clear vision when they started. They love the outdoors, so plenty of space was the first order of the day. They also love the style of large European properties—particularly the multiple living spaces, indoor and out—so the architecture is consistent with their vision. It’s a spectacular Arkansas country estate. The outdoor living spaces are wonderful: the plastered pool is surrounded by native flagstone, and the covered cabana has pitched wooden beams. The unique terra cotta pieces atop the chimney are very consistent with what you would see in the Old World. I like to vary the sizes and shapes, to give the impression of an old home that has been added to through the years. And in truth, the project has evolved over time as we have introduced the elements that were most important to them, including having many

42 At Home in Arkansas | August 2015

diverse settings for social gatherings. The couple shares a real passion for music, and the living room of the main house is used for that purpose—so it’s a real drawing card. They are also a family, so it was important to remember that, while the living spaces were elegant, they also had to be relaxed and inviting. What patterns, colors, and textures drove your design choices?

We brought the soft, muted colors of the home’s exterior inside to create a warm and inviting backdrop. The interior walls of the main house are plastered in stone and flesh tones, and the floors range from flagstone and antique terra cotta tiles to parquet and reclaimed wood. This backdrop allowed us the freedom to use pattern and color liberally. We used variations of brown (chocolate and truffle), yellows and golds, terra cotta and brick reds, and Mediterranean blues. As for the fabrics and textures, there are cottons, chenilles, wools,

and linens—all of which work beautifully together in various combinations of classic patterns from room to room. How do you create a balance of contrasting elements in your designs—for instance, masculine/feminine, rough-hewn/refined?

The goal is always—and especially in this home— to create timeless and classic interiors worthy of the setting and architecture, and a lot of that work happens in finding an appropriate mix. For instance, I used pillows made with Cowtan & Tout wool on a sofa upholstered with Pierre Frey denim and combined aged gilt accessories with a farm table. Dressing it up to dress it down (or vice versa) is the way I usually think of it. Much of the work I do is for couples or families, so I am accustomed to using design elements that have both masculine and feminine characteristics. In the end, you want everyone in the family to feel as though it reflects their personality.

The master suite was part of a remodel of the home, which also included a large master closet and dressing area for the homeowner. The floor and vanity countertop of the master bathroom are limestone, and the bathtub surround is tiled with Walker Zanger tile. An antique chest and mirror is situated on one side of the bed, which is dressed in multiple patterns and textures of bedding in a palette of peach, goldenrod, and celadon. Facing page: A blue and white guest suite features an eyecatching cowhide chest, above which hangs a mirror framed by a wreath of antlers. The wall color in the bedroom is Benjamin Moore’s Navajo White, and the carpet is by Stark. In the guest bathroom, the floors and vanity countertop are chocolate travertine, and the walls are covered with a Ralph Lauren wallpaper.

When you’re designing for your own family, you have the benefit of not only knowing their personal taste, but—oftentimes— how they interact with their home and what spaces will be of the greatest importance. For Springdale-based designer Kimberly Harper, both of these were true. When her sister’s family began to build their dream home in West Little Rock, Harper was called on from the start to help with space planning and architectural details. However, it’s the interior decoration of three distinctly different yet coherent spaces where Harper’s true talents shine. THE FAMILY SPACES With six people living under one roof, common areas for rest, eating, and gathering were high on the priority list and their spatial organization was key to the flow of the home and to the family’s everyday routine. “From the beginning, there were rooms we focused on—the family spaces where they would be living every day—and then we have eventually August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 51

worked our way through the entire home,” Harper says. A large family room with multiple seating nooks accommodates a number of activities for both the parents and the children, who range in age from 10 to 18. “There’s usually always a puzzle going at the table. When we have friends over, the kids will be watching TV and can spin around in the chairs to see both sides of the room,” the homeowner says of the furniture organization and the activities enjoyed there. The kitchen is equally accommodating, with a large island that works as well for food prep as it does for serving a quick afternoon snack. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry ensures everything has a place and that no space is wasted. Appliances as well as a television are concealed behind cabinetry panels for a streamlined look. “She had seen pictures of things she liked; and she’s a detail-oriented person,” Harper says of her sister’s vision for the room. “She wanted something that had a lot of detail when it came to the tile and millwork, and she loved that the range hood would match the fireplace in the breakfast area.” This adjoining breakfast room connects to the U-shaped kitchen for an easy flow and convenient service from one room to the other. The family eats most of their meals in this space, which has a laid back—yet refined—appeal much like the rest of the home. A larger, more formal dining space is used for holidays and entertaining. The last room to be designed in the house was a study located just off the front entry. After employing a “light, airy palette” throughout the rest of the home, Harper was ready to venture off course for this design. “It’s the one room that doesn’t belong. But she has all this light, so we wanted a place that was dark and secluded, so it could be used for napping or reading,” Harper says. The result is a chic, navysaturated space that’s as sophisticated as it is comfortable. 52 At Home in Arkansas | August 2015

Details such as the repetitive ‘X’ pattern on the island’s base cabinetry millwork and the mullions on the door panels of the ceiling-to-countertop cabinets, the patterned tile backsplash above the range, and the blue beaded-board ceiling give the kitchen character. Facing page: A French countrystyle table pairs with antique caned-back chairs and an open-shelf hutch for easy elegance.

August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 53

The family room is a gathering space with multiple seating areas, meaning a variety of activities can be accommodated at the same time, from watching television to reading. Facing page: The master suite follows the light, airy palette of the rest of the home with a number of distinguishing details, including the lighting and accessories. 54 At Home in Arkansas | August 2015

THE PARENTS’ SPACE The master bedroom and bath are a private retreat for the homeowners. “They wanted something they could close the doors to and get away,” Harper says of the initial goals. “We did a seating area, and—since it’s a large room—it breaks up the space and allows for a great view of the neighboring golf course.” Additionally, a private entry connects the couple’s bedroom to the pool and back terrace. In the bathroom, details once again give the design polish. An intricately tiled mosaic gives the appearance of a contemporary rug on the floor, while ornate sconces and a chandelier mix in traditional flair to create a room that is refreshing and elegant. THE KIDS’ SPACES Since the house is home to four children— one boy and three girls (one of whom is currently away at college)—it was equally important to have private and functional spaces for kids. Harper shares a special relationship with each of her nieces and her nephew, and knowing them well helped to make the process of designing August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 55

rooms they would love all the more enjoyable—and easy. For example, the second oldest daughter in the family requested blue walls with a pop of pink, giving Harper a solid starting point. “She is very interested in makeup and photography,” notes the designer, who created a dedicated vanity space using a clean-lined Parsons table. A custom headboard is upholstered in a chevron fabric for a graphic addition. This bedroom connects to a bath that is shared between the two sisters who currently live at home full-time. Whimsical and vibrant—the bath is covered with a Thibaut wallpaper that is appealing to both girls, one of whom is 10 and the other who is 16. “We wanted something that would 56 At Home in Arkansas | August 2015

tie the two spaces together and is youthful, but not too young,” Harper notes. In the younger sister’s bedroom, twin beds, covered in a mix of Company C and custom bedding, were a must-have for sleepovers. Harper covered the walls and the ceiling with a girlish shade of pink to seamlessly blend the two. After living in the home for six years and allowing the design to evolve and come together over the time, the result is a comfortable yet sophisticated space that allows the family to live at their best. “After being here as long as we have, I wouldn’t change anything. And I think making the decision to hire a professional designer on the front end saves you so much time,” the homeowner says.

Soft pinks and green abound in the youngest daughter’s bedroom. The bath, which is shared with her older sister, features a Thibaut wallpaper. Facing page: At her request, the couple’s sixteen-year-old daughter’s room is a mix of blue and pink. A pair of Ashley Saer paintings hangs over the Parsons desk-turned-vanity.

“ I A LWAY S T H O U G H T— B E FO R E I E V E N knew I was expecting—that I would do a neutral nursery for a baby boy or a girl,” says Northwest Arkansas interior designer Melissa Haynes. However, almost immediately after finding out that she and her husband Hunter’s new arrival would be a girl, Haynes fell hard for a blush-hued design. “There was a Mary

McDonald for Schumacher fabric I had pinned, thinking someday it would be perfect for a project. I returned to that immediately, and it was the starting point for the entire space,” she says of the “Chinois Palais” drapery panels, which now grace her daughter Harlowe's room. With the palette set, Haynes opted to accentuate the light blush hues of the drapery with an equally girlish wall color—Benjamin Moore’s Queen Anne Pink. “I wanted to try something in the blushy pink family for the walls, but as soon as that was painted, I walked past it and thought ‘this is way too bright,’” she says.

“I personally like really soft colors, but even my painter loved it, so I decided to keep it. As soon as things started to come together, the other pieces lightened the color, and I loved it.” These other elements include an abstract art piece titled “Stella,” by Christina Baker, which hangs over the crib; a three-dimensional mounting of small, pink sea urchins seen on the wall behind the changing table; and custom bedding made from Elizabeth Hamilton fabric, sewn in panels to allow the crib skirt to remain floor length even as the crib height is adjusted for the child’s growth. Aside from high-style elements, Haynes also incorporated high-function pieces to make the room practical for the new family. In the adjoining bath, a small freestanding tub sits inside a tiled room, which can accommodate splashing bubble baths as the young child grows. Additionally, built-in shelving and a multitude of storage bins help to keep the closet organized, allowing Haynes to focus on the room’s most important feature: her daughter. DURABLE FABRICS My glider is covered with a Sunbrella outdoor fabric that looks like wool and has a soft feel, yet it repels stains and wipes clean. CATCHALL END TABLE There are so many things—books, bottles, burp cloths, etc.—you need when you’re using your rocker. Having a small table by the glider keeps them close at hand.

PROPER LIGHTING A swing-arm floor lamp, which was originally placed near the glider but was soon relocated to the changing table, provides just the right amount of light for latenight diaper changes. GLASS DISPENSERS There are so many lotions and creams and soaps for babies. I put everything in glass dispensers on the counter to make them more accessible and to eliminate the clutter and confusion that can come with having a lot of different bottles.

BASKETS AND BINS There is so much gear that comes with having a baby. These are a quick and cute way to keep it all organized. I keep extra diapers, wipes, products, blankets, and clothing she has outgrown in baskets in the closet. I also have baskets for towels in the bath and ones for toys in the bedroom.

Laura and Jason LaRue’s lives were forever changed eight months ago with the arrival of their first child, Grant. However, long before he came into the world, the couple planned a perfect nursery that would be welcoming for the new baby, as well as functional and comfortable for them as new parents. “We really wanted a simple, classic room that he can grow into and that we can play in and be ourselves,” Laura says of her approach. Thinking first about key pieces, she selected a timeless Jenny Lind crib. “I always knew I wanted the Jenny Lind crib, and we

got it early on. My brother, sister, and I all had the same style [of crib] when we were growing up,” she says. The mobile hanging over the crib, a whimsical piece by blabla is a favorite of Laura's along with the acrylic bookshelves, which help to maximize storage space. Another element—a gliding rocker ordered through Little Rock’s Pickles & Ice Cream—was a must-have for the room. “A friend told me to be sure to get a comfortable glider because I would spend so much time in it. I love this one because it’s cozy and the navy fabric is plain enough that we can use it once he grows out of the nursery,” Laura says. The glider is also a special place for mom-and-son reading time. “On the Night You Were Born′children's book is a tear-jerker and such a sweet book. It's the first one I grab a lot when I sit with Grant to read to him before bed. The very last page says, ‘Heaven blew every trumpet and sounded every horn on the wonderful, marvelous night you were born.’ I love that so much and can't read it without getting tears in my eyes. Life with him has been absolutely wonderful and every bit of marvelous,” she adds. Other accents, including a pair of owls (which remind Laura of a father-son duo) that were needlepointed by Jason’s late grandmother and a framed “Why God Made Little Boys” print, which her mother presented to her at a baby shower, add heartfelt flair to the nursery. Reflecting on the space as a whole, Laura adds, “I know these little moments and time with Grant as a baby are so precious. This nursery is just what I envisioned...a sweet, simple space for him to read, play, and grow into a rowdy little boy.” August 2015 | athomearkansas.com 63

The base of this lamp illuminates for a nightlight that beams tiny diamond shapes onto the nursery's walls. Wooden blocks note the child's milestones. The owl needlepoint was made by Jason's late grandmother.

SHAYLA COPAS INTERIORS Offering a full range of timeless and classic design services focusing on the originality of each client company name: Shayla Copas Interiors owner: Shayla Copas trademarks: I am known for my eye for color, texture, and detail. I do not have a signature style. From transitional to traditional, I believe that a true design should reflect the client while using my design talents to pull the project together. As a team we can make your dream home a reality! history: Shayla Copas has been designing homes and businesses in the South since 1997. She has built her business on integrity, her keen eye for detail, and that bond she creates with each of her clients. Shayla’s projects are full spectrum, from small to large. New construction, remodel, furniture procurement, or a small facelift of a room--she will tackle them all! design advice: First, scale is everything; going too small with furnishings and accessories can often hurt an otherwise great design. Second, put your signature on it! Even when hiring a designer, make sure to convey your taste so that the design reflects it. A perceptive designer will take hold of your favorite elements to make the design yours! Third, be careful not to get too involved with trends. Your key and largest investments should be timeless!
