For each issue, as we begin to pore over real weddings submissions, talk with local vendors, and dream up ideas for the pages of Weddings in Arkansas, I find myself thinking, “Wouldn’t it be fun if I could do it all over again?” My patient husband listens to this nonsense, all the while offering a host of reasons why renewing your wedding vows after two-and-a-half years isn’t really a thing. For current brides-to-be, there is an exciting—albeit overwhelming, at times—selection of venues, menus, gowns, stems, cakes, paper goods, and any other element you could possibly want for your ceremony or reception. We’ve filled this issue with some of the latest trends for both classic celebrations and more whimsical fêtes, along with good-to-know advice from wedding industry experts and real brides. No matter your style, there’s so much fun to be had when planning a wedding, and we are here to make sure you are fully informed—and inspired. As for me, in hindsight, I don’t know that I would do it ALL over again, but there a few parts I would go back to in a heartbeat. For instance, many of the brides featured in our Real Weddings section mentioned how their mothers were heavily involved in their wedding planning and even offered jewelry, shawls, and other treasured pieces for their daughters to don on their wedding day. For me, spending time with both my mom and dad during the planning process is an irreplaceable memory. I will always remember being in a dressing room with my mom and finding the perfect gown, and I will definitely never forget the night my dad insisted that we all “brush up” on the steps to the electric slide in our living room. These are things you want to relive, so savor these precious planning moments and hold tight to the memories, as they’ll give way to new ones before you know it.

Happy Planning!

ROSEMARY AARON

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SHANNON STURGIS 30 Weddings in Arkansas | Fall/Winter 2015

ROSEMARY + AARON hallmark nichols NOVEMBER 8, 2014 HONEYMOON DESTINATION Nizuc Resort & Spa ~ Cancun, Mexico

Dancing the Night Away Three leading men got the opportunity to dance with the bride. First, Rosemary and Aaron shared their first dance to Otis Redding’s “That’s How Strong My Love Is.” Next, her father stepped in for a sentimental slow dance to “Stand By Me.” Finally she shared a very special dance with her 95-year-old grandfather, Clelan, who taught her how to two-step for the wedding.

HIS-AND-HER COCKTAILS Aaron: Whiskey Sour Rosemary: Blackberry Mojito Punch “I was very proud that I managed to create a signature cocktail that perfectly matched my bridesmaids’ dresses,” Rosemary laughs.

LITTLE ROCK

Just DIY After searching for footed, gold vases to use on the reception tables and only finding a few, Rosemary had an epiphany—she could create them. She rounded up candlesticks and glass bowls from local vendors and then spray-painted the candlesticks gold. After gluing the bowls on top, she had the perfect centerpiece containers and the entire project cost less than $30.

THE LOOK OF THE DAY

Flowers of Choice Ranunculi David Austen roses Hanging Amaranthus Anemones

Rosemary and Aaron wanted their celebration to feel sophisticated and minimalist, yet they valued a wooded setting. Rosemary liked the idea of the bold dresses and décor being juxtaposed against the greenery of the natural landscape. The pair even joked that their wedding theme was “J.Crew in the Woods.”

MOTHER’S BEST Rosemary wore her mother’s diamond earrings on the big day, and she also donned one of her vintage mink shawls when the chill of fall air arrived at the reception.

Rosemary on Her Favorite Things About the Experience “One of the things I loved most about our wedding was that it was a way for us to showcase the talents of our many creative friends and family members. My best man, Cody, is a singer, so he performed during the ceremony. Our good friend, John Willis, and Aaron’s brother, Steve Hudleston, were our ceremony musicians, and Aaron’s 13-year-old niece Sydney accompanied me on her violin, as I walked down the aisle. My good friend Autumn made the groom’s cake, my good friend Shannon was the photographer, and another friend, Angela, did my hair and makeup.”

A Tasteful Proposal Aaron proposed to Rosemary on February 23, 2013, the day after her birthday. He woke her up by bringing her breakfast in bed, including pancakes made from scratch, and asked her to be his wife.

MEANINGFUL VENUE “The first time I ever went to Wildwood Park I said, ‘This would be an amazing place to get married.’ It was outdoors, there was a lake, woods, and a tented pavilion for the reception, so we didn’t even consider any other venues,” says Rosemary. “It was really the perfect place and had everything we needed. My family and I are big supporters of the arts and we were happy to be able to support a place that we loved.”

FAYETTEVILLE

A WEEKEND ENGAGEMENT FLOWERS OF CHOICE Ranunculi Peonies Fresh Greenery

Showered with Love

Andy woke Amy up early one Saturday and surprised her with breakfast on a tray—an engagement ring was also on the tray. She immediately said “Yes.” Andy also planned a special celebratory weekend in Kansas City. The couple, who had been dating for a year and a half at the time, spent the weekend relaxing in the city and attending a baseball game— one of their favorite pastimes.

“I knew I wanted a spring wedding. I really wanted everything to be very simple and pretty. I didn’t want a lot of glitz and glam but mostly wanted to highlight the beauty of the venue.”

WEDDING MUST-HAVE

First Dance Song

“For me, it was definitely having so many people we love in one place; it was amazing.” —AMY “Turning around and seeing my bride for the first time and the excitement we both had at that moment.” —ANDY

A fraternity brother of Andy’s, who is a pastor, united the couple in marriage. They say having him pronounce them as husband and wife was a really special element of the big day.

— Amy

The couple made their grand exit down an aisle of well-wishers who tossed rose petals as they passed by.

FAVORITE MEMORY OF THE DAY

A “Well-Known” Officiant

“Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran

HOUSE CALL “Micah of Early Bird Catering came to our house and let us sample an array of dishes; everything she cooks is delicious, so it wasn’t easy to choose,” Amy says of the caterer.

HANDMADE PIECES

“I’d highly recommend getting a ‘day-of’ planner to alleviate stress where at all possible,” says Amy. “Carolyn [Lee, of The Wedding Lady] was great and took care of everything, so I didn’t have to worry.”

Wooden boxes for the cakes and the centerpieces on the tables added to the natural, garden-like feel of the reception. These wooden pieces were handmade for the occasion by Andy’s dad, Danny, and his brother, Chris.

Honeymoon Destination

Confection Perfection When it came to the bride’s cake, Amy envisioned having a variety of different styles and flavors. So, rather than one large cake, she opted for three different cakes in three different flavors—vanilla, raspberry, and chocolate-and-vanilla marble.

KENADY + JORDAN neal ghent JULY 25, 2014

NAUVOO, ILLINOIS + BENTONVILLE KENADY’S SOUND ADVICE

FAMILY TREASURES Kenady’s mother made a sequined tablecloth for the head table at the reception, the better to showcase the bride’s grandmother’s collection of solid brass candlesticks.

Double the Fun The bride says she has known from the time she was eight years old that she wanted to be married in the Nauvoo temple in Nauvoo, Illinois, which sits on the banks of the Mississippi River. To make her childhood vision a reality, the couple were married there and celebrated with a larger gathering of friends and family the next day at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, in Bentonville.

“Take your time when dating to really get to know each other and prepare for marriage. It’s great to have a beautiful wedding, but it’s more important to have a beautiful marriage.” HONEYMOON DESTINATION ~ PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO

Where are They Now? The couple lives in Rexburg, Idaho, where they are both completing their final semester of study at Brigham Young University-Idaho.

AN EVENTFUL HOMECOMING The groom’s parents had been working as missionaries in Quito, Ecuador, for three years, and the couple set the wedding date for just two weeks after their return.

Declaration of Intent Mutual friends introduced Kenady and Jordan at a party. At the end of the evening, Jordan announced to the entire group that he would like to take Kenady on a date. She said yes, and they have been together since.

PETAL PERFECT “I knew I wanted white flowers and a Southern feel,” Kenady says of her floral priorities. The bride and bridesmaids carried arrangements of white roses, anemones, and magnolias, wrapped in gold satin ribbon. At the reception, calla lilies added a touch of glamour to the tables.

Take the Cake Neither Kenady nor Jordan is a big fan of cake, so they let their guests enjoy the chocolate and white, raspberry-filled, three-tiered confection, which was offered in addition to a buffet of their favorite desserts: apple muffins with cream cheese frosting, pecan bars from the Green Bean Café, Krispy Kreme donuts, sugar cookies from the Green Apron, and petits fours from Rick’s Bakery.

Kenady says she trusted Barbara Tillman and the Crystal Bridges culinary team one hundred percent, when it came to the reception menu. In addition to a full carving station, they served catfish cakes, fingerling potatoes with dipping sauces, and a variety of breads and vegetables. “The food was beautiful and tasted outstanding!” Kenady recalls.

OLIVIA JOE

PHOTOGRAPHY BY BENJAMIN KRAIN

OLIVIA + JOE hussman ramsey SEPTEMBER 20, 2014 COLOR CODED Romantic shades of pale pink, gold, and deep purple set the tone for this sophisticated celebration.

On a Personal Note The music was the most highly personalized part of the evening, the couple says. The string quartet played the bride’s favorite song—Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California”— during the ceremony, and the groom specified the entire playlist for the band at the reception.

KICK UP YOUR HEELS “We knew the secret to a great reception was a fun, solid band, so we got the Atlanta Showstoppers, who played Motown nonstop. Our reception was just one gigantic dance party.” – Olivia

LITTLE ROCK

“We only dated for eight months before Joe proposed. People always tell you, ‘When you know, you know,’ which I didn’t understand until I met my husband. When you meet someone who you know you’re going to marry, you don’t want to wait.”

Cake Tasting

— Olivia A Blank Canvas

The bride and groom met on a blind date at the Arkansas Arts Center in the spring of 2013.

TAKE THEIR ADVICE “Hire a videographer! We just celebrated our one-year anniversary, and we got to re-watch the most special moment of our lives, see our friends’ and families’ faces as we were getting married, watch ourselves saying our vows to each other, and relive the happiness we felt that day.”

The bride’s cake was a classic white cake, decorated with sugared gardenia flowers. The groom’s cake was a tribute to his favorite sports team, the St. Louis Cardinals; a cardinal perched atop a baseball bat and little cake “baseballs” for the youngest guests were special touches.

Destination Paradise

HOME SWEET MATRIMONY Olivia had always pictured her wedding outdoors at her parents’ home, which has a stunning river view; Joe agreed, and together the couple decided that a sunset ceremony would create exactly the atmosphere they wanted for their special moment.

The couple honeymooned in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii.

FIRST DANCE

A Fortunate Proposal When Olivia gets a happy prediction from a fortune cookie, she keeps it. As Christmas of 2013 neared, she happened to get two hopeful fortunes back-to-back. One read: “A pleasant surprise is in store for you soon.” The other said: “A small lucky package is on its way to you soon.” Olivia’s sister secretly swiped these fortunes and gave them to Joe. One evening, as the couple was departing for a Christmas party, he returned them to her, along with a third fortune that foretold, “Joseph Ramsey is going to ask Olivia Hussman to marry him tonight.” Olivia said, “Yes!” and they celebrated afterward with friends and family at the party, which was, in fact, a surprise engagement party.

The couple took their first dance steps as husband and wife to “You Send Me” by Sam Cooke, a song title which is also an inscription inside Olivia’s engagement ring and Joe’s wedding ring.

BETHANY hayes + ROWAN ledbetter NOVEMBER 1, 2014

LITTLE ROCK

KEEPING THE FAITH Soon after moving from Ohio to Arkansas, Bethany met Rowan in passing a few times, because they had mutual friends. But it wasn’t until they were both serving as small group leaders for high school students at their church that they made a connection. The couple’s shared religious practice and beliefs have continued to be part of their relationship; on the day Rowan proposed, he gave Bethany a bible inscribed with her married name as an engagement gift.

Just Desserts The couple did cut a cake for the classic photo op, but the true dessert showstopper was pie. Bethany explains: “I insisted on having pie instead of cake, because pie was just a staple in the fall at my house, growing up. [Rowan and I] both prefer it.” The groom’s cake was made in the shape of a basketball, a nod to his time as a basketball player at Ouachita Baptist University, and it sat on a gym-floor-inspired hardwood base. S’mores fixings were also available as a nod to the camp setting.

HONEYMOON DESTINATION PLAYA MUJERES, MEXICO

Favorite Moment: Groom “I loved seeing Bethany for the first time and realizing that I am going to spend my life with this amazing woman by my side. It all just hit me at once, and it was the most exciting, wonderful feeling in the world.”

Favorite Moment: Bride “My favorite part of the day was absolutely the ceremony, particularly when we prayed together and focused on what the day was about. It was such a sweet moment, and I’ll never forget it.”

WEDDING DAY RESOURCES Bride’s gown: Low’s Bridal and Formal, Brinkley Bridesmaids’ attire: David’s Bridal, locations statewide Cake: Sweet Love Bakery, Little Rock Catering: Excaliburger Food Truck, Little Rock Ceremony and reception location: Camp Aldersgate, Little Rock Floral design: Tipton & Hurst, locations throughout Central Arkansas Groomsmen’s attire: Jos. Food Truck Fare A college buddy of the groom’s is the owner and operator of a food truck—Excaliburger—and it felt like a natural fit for the couple’s style. Guests chose from four panini and soup combinations. The bride’s favorite? An apple, brie, and bacon panini with chili.

JONESBORO

HOMETOWN CELEBRATION Holly and John both grew up in Jonesboro, and both of their families still live there today. When it came time to select a place for the celebration, they knew they wanted to return home (from Dallas) to be married there. They were also set on having an outdoor wedding in a unique location. “When my parents’ home was suggested, we fell in love with the idea,” Holly says. The couple were married on the property near the family’s pond.

Holly and John were in Fayetteville for his best friend’s wedding. The night of the wedding John tried to talk Holly into going for an early morning hike the next day before they were scheduled to meet their parents for brunch. John was persistent but Holly continued to refuse. The next morning he came to her room, woke her up, and eventually talked her into a hike at Devil’s Den State Park—the place where he had asked Holly to be his girlfriend. “I could tell he was starting to get nervous and moving quite a bit before he got on one knee and asked me to be his wife. I said “YES” as we hugged and was overjoyed at this moment. I couldn’t believe that he pulled it off without giving any hints, but he did so good at keeping this secret,” Holly recalls. They celebrated with friends and family afterward at brunch.

FIRST DANCE SONG “AT LAST” BY ETTA JAMES

Family Ties The bride’s uncle, Stephen Dickinson, who serves as senior pastor of Cabot’s First United Methodist Church, married the couple, which made for an especially memorable ceremony. “My uncle Stephen made the ceremony so personal to John and me, as he shared how the grace of God brought us together,” Holly says.

FEBRUARY 7, 2015 LAKE VILLAGE Something Old, Borrowed & Blue

Advice for Engaged Couples “Get a great photographer; it’s worth every penny!”

The groom’s 95-year-old dear Aunt Izzy loaned Leigh diamond-andsapphire earrings to wear on her wedding day. This accounted for three of the attributes from the time-honored English rhyme that many brides still follow today.

LEIGH’S THOUGHTS ON HER GOWN “I knew I wanted a long sleeve, special cathedral gown. I wanted it to match our catholic wedding. I envisioned something classic and somewhat old school.”

WEDDING DAY RESOURCES Accommodations: Lake Chicot State Park, Lake Village Bridesmaids’ attire: Proposals, Little Rock Catering: Delinda Vaughn, Lake Village Groom’s and groomsmen’s attire: Ted Thompson, Paul Morrell Formalwear, Dumas Music—ceremony: Jana Mayo, Texarkana; Jim McMurry, Little Rock, and Ann Brigham, Dumas Photography: Benfield Photography, Fayetteville Rings: Sissy’s Log Cabin, Jonesboro, Little Rock, and Pine Bluff Venue—ceremony: Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, Lake Village Venue—reception: Paul Michael Company Headquarters, Lake Village Wedding coordination and floral design: Ron Pepper, Little Rock

A Family Affair

THE FLOWER TRADE

Leigh and Jake were fortunate to have an arsenal of supplies and furniture when it came to setting up their reception site. Leigh notes, “Most everything from our reception came from Jake’s parents’ store [Paul Michael Company] and was built by Jake and the Paul Michael crew. Jake even made our stage for the reception out of old tin ceiling tiles from a building that had been torn down.” Additionally, the groom’s aunt made both the bride’s and groom’s cakes. The location of the reception—a Paul Michael warehouse—was also unique. It has only been used for small gatherings and family weddings.

Going for an outdoor, lodge-like feel, the couple opted for fresh greenery rather than traditional blooms. They cut cedar trees and brought these into the reception hall, along with tons of branches and limbs, 200 strands of lights, berries, greenery, and moss.

MAY 30, 2015

FAYETTEVILLE

Beachside Proposal While on a trip to San Destin, Florida with friends, Alex casually suggested the two have dinner at the Henderson Park Inn on a night when all of the couples were going out on their own. He had actually been planning to take Ashley there for a long time and had coordinated travel plans for both sets of their parents to be there for the big event, asking Ashley’s father to capture the moment on camera. The couple dined on the beach where two tables were surrounded by Tiki torches and rose petals. Timing his proposal for sunset, he popped the question, and Ashley said “Yes.” Their parents came outside to surprise her shortly thereafter, and they spent the rest of the night celebrating.

FLAIR FOR THE PAST “My ‘something old’ was an original 1920s bracelet given to me by Alex’s mother as an engagement present. I’ve always adored the 1920s and this really set the tone for our wedding, as Alex also enjoys jazz music and things of that era,” Ashley says.

Meant to Be in May INTIMATE CELEBRATION Ashley and Alex envisioned a day they would truly be able to enjoy without feeling rushed. “Neither of us wanted to spend the whole time trying to say ‘Hi!’ to everyone; we wanted to sit and soak up the experience,” Ashley says. To help accomplish this, they kept the guest list to 50 close friends and relatives.

Several of Ashley’s family members celebrate anniversaries in May. Since the month had been lucky for all of them, Ashley and Alex decided to join the club and chose their own date— May 30th.

WEDDING DAY RESOURCES Photographer: Alana Damron, Miss Alaneous Photography Venue—ceremony and reception: Autumns Ridge, Fayetteville Bride’s gown: Tesori Bridal, Formal & Occasion, Fayetteville Cake and Catering: Mermaids, Fayetteville Entertainment— ceremony and reception: Luda Jazz, Fayetteville Flowers: Shirley’s Flowers, Bentonville Groom’s and groomsmen’s suits: Men’s Warehouse, locations statewide Hair and makeup: Marisa Samavati, Solange Salon, Fayetteville Rentals: ASAP Rent-A-Tent, Springdale; Eventures, Fayetteville Rings: Romance Diamond Co., Fayetteville

NOT YOUR TRADITIONAL WEDDING CAKE Neither Alex nor Ashley cares for cake, so they opted for different desserts for the celebration. Alex chose a strawberry cheesecake, while Ashley selected a chocolate ganache with a raspberry reduction sauce. Both were sprinkled with real 24kt gold leaf to dress them up for the occasion.

The Full Moon the expert: Casey Finch, Owner and Operator of the Full Moon knoWn For: Central Arkansas’ go-to place for creating a unique bridal registry, along with great ideas for hostess and bridal party gifts background: Casey’s first job was working at the Full Moon at age 15. Now, she has owned the popular hillcrest shop for over a year. she spent time living in st. Louis, where she worked in retail management at both Neiman Marcus and harold’s. With her retail background, and having worked at the Full Moon off and on for almost 25 years, she has a firm grasp on what is important to a bride when going through the registry process. she has also been able to see the transitions and identify trends when it comes to what the modern couple wants on their registry.

What are some oF the First steps a bride and groom should take beFore coming to register? First, they should consider the color scheme of their home as newlyweds, and ask themselves if they need any items to help tie together their existing home furnishings. they should also think about what they like to do as a couple. do they enjoy hosting parties, cooking together, watching the razorbacks, or any other number of activities? this can help them determine what to put on the registry list. What are some oF the essentials you recommend For a registry list? 1. dinnerware that is functional yet gorgeous! 2. Unique barware and serving pieces. 3. specialty items that the bride and groom can remember fondly and recall who gave the piece to them. 4. Items of all price points to give guests and well-wishers plenty of options. What are some oF the trends you are seeing on registries? Brides

are getting away from having formal china plus a set of everyday dinnerware. Instead, they are registering for beautiful dinnerware that is functional, timeless, and easy to clean! Also, more and more grooms are coming in to register with their fiancées. We love that! What can a bride and groom expect When they register at the Full moon? We like for the bride to walk around and get an idea of what interests her, and then a knowledgeable associate will guide her through creating a wellrounded registry. No appointment is necessary; and they can expect our undivided attention throughout the process. Every registrant also receives a special engagement gift. In addition, we now offer a discount on one fulfillment order of the couple’s dinnerware and a one-time hostess or bridal party gift discount. We offer free delivery for gifts purchased for the couple, or they may pick up at the store. Wrapping is free of charge, and we ship every day.

In 1984, a russellville location followed and 22 years after that, a bakery—known as pattiCakes—was added there. WHAT CAN A BRIDE & GROOM EXPECT WHEN WORKING WITH YOU? We strive to be extremely professional and thorough during the entire process. We do our best to make the cake tasting and design experience a fun and relaxing time. planning a wedding can be stressful, but we want the bride to look back on her experience with fond memories! WHAT SHOULD THEY BRING TO AN INITIAL CONSULTATION? We gather a lot of information by looking at a bride’s pinterest boards. She can also bring color swatches and inspiration pictures (either of cakes or the overall details of her wedding); this will give us a feel for the type of celebration she wants and how the cake fits into that. WHAT SETS YOUR WORK APART? We strive for perfection with our wedding cakes. not only is it important for the cake to be pretty and taste fantastic, but it also needs to be symmetrical and well built. It’s also important to note that we have never been late for a wedding cake delivery! WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR SPECIALITIES? We are a full-service bakery, so we have many cake flavors from which to choose.

And many people come to us because our scratch-made buttercream icing is really, really good. We also offer a variety of other desserts if the bride and groom choose to have a dessert table. Our mini cheesecakes, pies, tiramisu, and cookies are very popular.

HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD A COUPLE PLACE AN ORDER? As soon as possible—especially if the wedding is in April, May, June, September, or October. We can usually squeeze in a last-minute wedding cake in the other months, but during those five months we book very quickly. ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS A COUPLE SHOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SELECTING A CAKE? The venue is the number one consideration. Will the cake be in a temperature-controlled environment? If not, consideration needs to be taken if the temperature will be above 72 degrees. Buttercream and heat don’t play well together!

Best Western Inn of the Ozarks THE EXPERT: Cathy Handley, Sales Director at Best Western Inn of the Ozarks KNOWN FOR: Creating beautiful reception settings with the help of a friendly staff that offers amazing service BACKGROUND: The Best Western Inn of the Ozarks is Eureka Springs’s largest resort. Surrounded by the Ozark National Forest yet still within walking distance of the city’s historic downtown area, the location truly offers the best of both worlds. What’s more, it’s just eight minutes from the area’s best-known ceremony site, Thorncrown Chapel. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE TOP CONSIDERATIONS COUPLES SHOULD TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN SELECTING A VENUE? First, create your budget; this will help to guide you in terms of selecting the size of the event and the elements you want to include—both of which can be greatly effected by your venue selection. Second, be sure to choose a venue that can truly host your event properly. This goes back to the size restrictions and elements that you want to include (an outdoor setting, restrooms for guests, parking, etc.). Finally, you want to make sure the staff at the venue can provide the service that you deserve on your special day. Ask as many questions as you need to when meeting with a venue to ensure the service will be impeccable. ARE THERE ADVANTAGES TO CHOOSING AN INN OR HOTEL VENUE AS THE SITE OF YOUR RECEPTION? Not only can the Inn of the Ozarks offer rental facilities for indoor or outdoor events— including rehearsal dinners, luncheons and receptions—hosting your event at the Inn means guests won’t have to travel to offsite accommodations; they’ll already be at one of the finest lodging choices
