Magazines make the best reading material for travel. They’re lighter than books, more pliable than e-readers, and shorter in content, which means they’re easy to digest on the go. As a teenager, I’d camp out in the back seat of my parents’ car with one in hand, bending back the corners of pages featuring clothes I coveted or stories about girls like me. That habit has stayed with me today, and I can hardly leave Little Rock without tucking the newest issue of my favorites into my backpack or carry-on. While whatever you’re reading might get tossed to the side when you reach your destination, some travel plans invite a more leisurely pace. For me, nowhere is this more true than at the lake. Ah, the lake! There are plenty of reasons so many Arkansans live at the lake in the summer, and the slower tempo is certainly one of them. With the to-do lists left back at home and no agenda except to relax, I feel lighter after a weekend there. And, after one of these trips, it’s likely the magazine I’m reading is a little bit waterlogged from all that time on the dock.

This month, our Summer Living issue features three stunning retreats with ideas you can incorporate into any living space—it doesn’t have to be a lake house. Along with tips for entertaining on the water and must-haves for the season, it’s a perfect issue to pick up while soaking in the slower pace of summer.
