I have worked in the home design industry for over 20 years, and I have seen so many trends come and go. But none seem to change so quickly as kitchen and bath trends. As I have mentioned many times before, I am not a cook and spend as little time in the kitchen as possible; however, I do enjoy watching new trends emerge and seeing how they bring these highly used spaces to life. I have even noticed that the different regions within our own state have unique views on current trends that may not be apparent unless you are in those areas. The Kitchen and Bath issue is a great way for us to showcase some of the current trends and give you an insight into many of the latest designs that are being used around the state. Shayla Copas of Shayla Copas Interiors shares her talents with us as we feature her own newly remodeled kitchen. Bathed in a soothing palette, her kitchen is as warm and welcoming as she is, and one that has been intricately designed down to the smallest detail. I love how elegantly stylish this kitchen feels yet still functions as a utilitarian space. Sean Shrum, a relative newcomer on the design scene, gave us the best excuse to visit one of our favorite towns, Jonesboro, and showcase his creative eye by featuring a newly re-designed kitchen and bath. Sean shared this project with us along the way as the decisions were being made and the final result was one that we could not resist sharing with you. Then, for those in love with all things European, a newly built Alexander home is brought to life by Tuscan-style touches and a wealth of past experiences that make this kitchen the perfect fit for its new owners. Then finally, we share with you the innovative kitchen and master bath from the 2016 Arkansas Symphony Designer Showhouse. These two spaces were completely gutted and given new life. Because we loved the results so much, we thought it was fitting to share these projects with you, which reveal all the thought and planning that came to be a major hit at this year’s showhouse. You will find enlightening ideas for kitchen and bath designs as you read through these features, and I hope they will inspire you to create your own kitchen and bath trend.

CORRECTION We want to correct a mistake from the August issue. The art from pages 52 and 53 was by Ashley Saer. We apologize for this error.

SHAYLA COPAS INTERIORS

Offering a full range of timeless and classic design services focusing on the originality of each client

what would you consider your specialty regarding kitchen and bath design ? We have a knack for space planning and for getting the

most out of the space presented on each project. We are talented at figuring out how to make room for essential items but take less space in the end. what makes a great kitchen/bath designer ? The ability to listen to the client is the number one quality that a designer should possesses in order to accomplish a functional, yet beautiful design that is pleasing to the client. All clients are different, and it is important that not all projects look the same, but rather become a reflection of each individual client. what does your firm provide that others do not ? We have started using an intake process that is in-depth and allows us to quickly asses the needs of each client. The process is referred to as “Design Therapy.” Design Therapy, uses psychological analysis to understand the personality of each client. Understanding psychological reasoning behind each of our homeowners saves time, money, and enables us to “read” our clients. what is one item you cannot live without in your own kitchen ? There are so many wonderful design resources on the market right now it is hard to pick one item. However, I would have to say, that I get most use out of my “hidden” storage in my kitchen; such as corbels by my range that also serve as spice storage, columns by my sink that also serve as storage for our trash bags, detergent, pot scrubbers and much more. We also, have hidden pantries in our cabinets that provide an immense amount of storage for canned goods. Storage, storage, storage..that is what great kitchen space planning is all about.

ART EXHIBITION IN EL DORADO

VESTA’S TO OPEN SOON IN ROGERS

Asheville artist, KATHRYN B. PHILLIPS, who grew up in the Delta of Arkansas, will show her watercolor exhibit “Contraptions” in El Dorado. The exhibit will include 20 to 25 large-scale watercolor paintings of machinery parts reconfigured to create a contraption full of personality. “I find real freedom in redesigning a perfectly fine tuned machine with specific function into an expression of humor that hopefully delights the viewer as much as it does me to create it. I choose for the most part agricultural equipment to launch my ideas, simply because that subject speaks of my home and my familiarity. My contraption series embodies this concept.” The exhibit will be displayed at the South Arkansas Arts Center (SAAC) in El Dorado, September 3 - September 30, 2016 with a reception on September 30 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visit saac-arts. com for more information; kathrynbphillips.com

Life/Local Talent

Meet... MARK CHARETTE EXQUISITE HAND-CRAFTED BOWLS ARE A WORK OF ART CREATED BY THIS ARKANSAS RESIDENT PASSIONATE ABOUT WOOD

YOUR BOWLS SEEM QUITE POPULAR, HOW DID YOU COME TO MAKE THEM? I have an engineering background, and I’ve always been creative and inventive. I’ve always worked with wood, acrylic, metals and built things, but I am enjoying wood turning right now. A local cardiologist and friend introduced me to it a couple of years ago and I really loved it. To me, it’s a more artistic outlet than just making tables, and benches, and desks. Turning is just a little bit more unexpected because you don’t know what you’re making when you start. I’ve made bowls, vases, planters, candlesticks, and I am about to start some lamps. I had no idea it would grow into such a passion. WHAT EXACTLY IS WOOD TURNING? Turning is an advanced and specialized skill that all woodworkers eventually consider. It’s different from other types of woodworking because the wood is constantly moving while you are shaping it. I’m still learning, I’m still exploring what I like the most with it. It’s literally limitless.

I NTERVI E W: SUSAN DARCE Y P H O T O G R A P H Y: M AT T H E W M A R T I N To purchase, contact designer Mara Malcolm, Lamb Interior Design, (501) 813-0202, lambsinteriordesign.com. 26 At Home in Arkansas | September 2016

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO MAKE THESE BEAUTIFUL BOWLS? I work full-time and coach youth athletics, but my kids are growing out of that stage so for me it’s a way to connect with friends. It’s nice to be able to connect with people with something as simple as a bowl or a nice vase. If there’s one consistent theme I think that I’m gravitating towards, it’s making pieces that consistently remind you it was a tree. If there’s an imperfection, some ingrown bark, bark around the edge, or worm holes, I try to incorporate that into the pieces. The most fun pieces I do are for friends...I have a friend who grew up in Russellville and his parents still live in the house he grew up in. I’ve made him several pieces from a tree they cut down that he played in as a kid. It doesn’t get any better than that.

For Ben Brainard and his wife, Jamie, nothing stands in the way of a good party. Not even a renovation. The couple embarked on a whole home renovation of their mid-century Heights bungalow last year, finishing just in time to move back in on December 21 and host 65 guests for Christmas Eve. “I love to make my life as difficult as possible,” Brainard laughs. He admits that, aesthetically, the redesign was mostly his wife’s vision. But as a chef and part-owner of Little Rock’s Local Lime and Heights Taco & Tamale Co. restaurants, Brainard had a list of must-haves for the kitchen, including an open floor plan for entertaining, a large kitchen island, and a Wolf range. The couple went with a light, marbled Quartzite countertop both for its look and durability. “We loved this countertop when we saw the material,” Brainard says. “We entertain and we have kids. If we’d chosen marble it would’ve already been destroyed.” Entertaining has become an art for the Brainards, who host friends and family about three times a month. “Mexican is easy for entertaining,” Brainard says. “Tacos lend themselves to big group gatherings because people can create their own and toppings are abundant, so there’s something for everyone—even picky eaters or people with dietary restrictions.” Tacos also allow Brainard to serve dinner family style instead of chaining himself to the kitchen, plating food while the party is happening elsewhere. When serving spicy food, however, a cool drink is mandatory. It’s also Brainard’s go-to entertaining tip. “Take the time to make a cocktail,” he says. “It sets the mood and takes the stuffiness out of the night when someone walks in your house and you hand them a drink.”

O verlooking the A rkansas R iver in Little Rock stands a quintessentially French maison, complete with a copper Mansard roof, climbing ivy and trademark formal gardens. The French Revival-style home was the first of its kind in Cammack Village, and the adjoining gardens designed by renowned Arkansas landscape architect Neil Hamill Park are acquisitions of the Smithsonian Institute’s Archive of American Gardens. When the current homeowners moved in, they began restoring the gardens to their former glory with the help of Scott Connerly at Landscape Architects. JARDIN À LA FRANÇAISE The philosophy behind formal French gardens encourages symmetry and clean lines—the imposition of order on nature. The result feels both traditional and modern, with symmetrical allées, or walkways, juxtaposed against bloomfilled parterres. The lead sculptures that dot the property are original to the home, and the homeowners took great care to restore and retain them during the renovation.

Life/Garden LOCAL FLAVOR Though the overall style of the gardens has heavy European influences, the homeowners wanted to include a nod to Arkansas by finishing the parterres with plants that had a more regional feel. Jordan Parker of The Good Earth Garden Center customized the gardens with annuals that thrive in the Arkansas heat, including white and yellow lantana, purple scaevola and Angelonia. Though it isn’t native to Arkansas, oak leaf hydrangea was used for its close resemblance to local varieties. “They’re very natural and local-looking,” Parker says, “and they can be used in a more formal design to tie it all together.”

PRETTY PARTERRES In keeping with the French style of the home, the remodeled gardens are separated into seven different parterres, including an apple orchard, an intimate gated courtyard with a geometric cobblestone walkway, and a formal oval garden filled with seasonal blooms. Lead sculptures backed by ivy-covered treillage are placed throughout the gardens to mark the intersections of the allĂŠes. Those fortunate enough to stay in the guest suite get a spectacular view of the third parterre allĂŠe, looking down toward the small wading pool which is appointed with lead swan fountains. At the edge of the property, a steel-framed pavilion with a Mansard roof overlooks the classic oval pool.

“I

“I believe in trying to get the most out of a space” says Shayla Copas of Shayla Copas Interiors. And she left no detail unattended during the years-long renovation of the Little Rock-area home she shares with her husband and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Roxie. “We’re empty nesters and I run my design business out of our home, so our needs are little different,” she explains. They turned an unused bedroom into a closet and dressing space, and added a carriage house to accommodate her design business, but one of the most drastic changes came in the kitchen. “Before, it was dark and cramped, but now it is light, airy, and open,” Copas says. To accomplish this, a former hallway was narrowed allowing room to widen the kitchen, and the layout was adjusted to add more storage. Copas replaced dark wood cabinets with new WoodMode cabinets from Distinctive Kitchens and Baths, and then customized with trim, corbels, and columns. Aside from the decorative detail these additions added, they also cleverly hide storage. The corbels

46 At Home in Arkansas | September 2016

next to the stove pull out to reveal hidden spice racks, and the columns that flank the sink hide dishwashing soap and grocery bags to be reused. The wall housing the pantry and refrigerator displays cabinets extended to the ceiling for storage of less-often-used items. “Through my business I have learned that it is often the woman who makes the final decision in a home, and what does every woman want but more storage,” she says. A new Wolf range, pair of warming drawers, and an additional wall oven allow for easy entertaining with large crowds. Copas further brightened the space by layering new lighting above, below, and even inside the cabinetry. Pale yellow walls and creamy white cabinets exude a warm and bright ambiance, while the natural wood tone on the island and new mahogany flooring ground the space. Copas chose a tile mosaic from Walker-Zanger with tones of yellow, gold, and aqua for the backsplash, which is repeated on the wet bar next to the breakfast table. “I love color,” Copas explains, “but I like to keep it light and fresh.” A butler’s pantry connects the kitchen to the formal dining room, and Copas outfitted it with a full-sized Sub Zero wine refrigerator and beverage drawers. “The renovation was long, but in the end we gained a more functional and open, airy space to enjoy with our family,” Copas says.

Teresa and R eggie Clow are no strangers to creating custom homes. As the owner of Sharlow Builders and Developers, Reggie has built numerous houses throughout central Arkansas, including the couple’s current home in Alexander, which sits on four acres. However, for this kitchen, they were eager to include more intricate finishes and details that would set the design apart from their previous residence. “We really paid more attention to the common spaces in this house,” Teresa says. “We wanted a more ornate style than we had in the past.” Working with a floor plan similar to the one they used previously, they incorporated a few new features with custom millwork and decorative tile as well as a unique glaze that is seen on the all of the cabinetry. “As you live in a home, you figure things out and realize there are details you might have done differently,” Teresa says of the changes they made to this design as compared to their former kitchen. Four zones comprise the kitchen space, which Reggie refers to as “traditional with heavy Tuscan influence.” These zones include the main cooking area, a coffee bar, a central island, and a larger dining peninsula. The Clows are both avid cooks— with Teresa noting that Reggie is often her “sous chef in the kitchen”—and spend a good deal of their time at the six burner range along the back of the wall. This area also features a built-in pot filler for additional cooking convenience. The couple sketched the design for the hood based on similar ones they had seen and admired and then had it custom built for their own kitchen. The coffee/wet bar, located along one of the kitchen’s side walls, features design details such as a tumbled marble backsplash that is inset with medallions and a dark granite countertop that the Clows chose specifically to set it apart, and offers plenty of room for them to get their morning cup of java. “Even if you put the food in the bedroom, the kitchen is inevitably where guests gather,” Teresa laughs, “so this area has really given us a great place to serve when we entertain.” Finally, an island combined with a bar-height peninsula offers room for casual dining as well as a food prep area. The exquisite corbels and intricate millwork featured throughout the kitchen are designed to make each piece of cabinetry look more like a standalone piece of furniture. These pieces are further defined with a glazed finish that is the work of Angelfish Studios, which Reggie frequently works with on his custom home projects to individualize them.

This Spring, the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild held its bi-annual fundraiser, the Symphony Designer Showhouse, a collaboration among designers and vendors across the state. Meridith Ranouil of MLH Designs along with Bill Wrape and Alissa Oates of Distinctive Kitchens and Baths collaborated on the remodel of the Chenal home’s kitchen. “The house was built in the 1980’s so there were a few features that really dated it,” Ranouil says. “We wanted to make it more functional and current, and give it a very classic and timeless feel.” Centrally located in the home and open to the den, the team wanted to give the space a neutral, universally-appealing makeover in preparation for the house going on the market. “This project was a little different because we wanted to appeal to nine out of 10 potential buyers,” Wrape, who has been

designing custom kitchens and baths for 17 years, explains. Ranouil disguised the Palladian-style window (a popular feature at the time of the home’s construction) with a custom Roman shade. To create a more efficient work triangle and make the space more conducive to entertaining, the team replaced the peninsula with a freestanding island. “Now, guests can sit at the island without interfering in the workspace,” Ranouil says. They also closed off an awkward entrance to the laundry room, which created wall space for a floorto-ceiling pantry cabinet with shelves that roll out when the doors are opened. “The WoodMode cabinetry is outfitted with every feature that homeowners are looking for: corner turn-outs, pull-out trash cans, and big drawers for pots and pans,” Wrape says. “Everything is designed to be easy to use and to make things easy to find.” The

cabinets extend to the 10-foot ceiling, offering valuable storage space, which is “always a selling point,” Ranouil notes, but also contribute to the kitchen’s timeless feeling. A large refrigerator is disguised behind cabinetry panels, and a professionalgrade range and hood by DCS are a home cook’s dream. Ranouil and Oates chose a light glaze to warm up the white finish on the Shaker-style recessed-panel cabinets, which contrasts with the island’s on-trend green-gray washed finish. Above, a custom lantern has classic roots, but is updated to reflect current style. The Quartz counters were provided by Wilsonart and are dark on the island, and light on the perimeter cabinets. “The backsplash is one of my favorite features,” Ranouil points out. “The arabesque shape is very on-trend right now, and the muddy tone complements the rest of the finishes in the space nicely.”

A BATH DESIGN DREAM TEAM BRINGS A CHENAL HOME INTO THE 21ST CENTURY WITH A NEW LAYOUT, CUSTOM STORAGE, AND ON-TREND COLOR SCHEME

T

The original bath in this year’s Arkansas Symphony Orchestra Guild’s Designer Showhouse left a bit to be desired. Planning later to put the home on the market, the owner knew that the step-up jacuzzi tub, fluted columns, and too-small shower weren’t putting the home’s best foot forward. Meridith Ranouil of MLH Designs, Alissa Oates, and Bill Wrape of Distinctive Kitchens and Baths, and Debi Davis of Debi Davis Interior Design came on board to give the bath more appeal to potential buyers and bring it up to date. First, the layout was addressed. The dated corner tub unit was replaced with a glass-enclosed shower. Where the shower previously stood, Ranouil, Oates, and Wrape collaborated on a cabinet designed to look like an over-sized piece of furniture. On the opposite wall, Davis created a dressing area with a console and mirror from her line of reproduction furnishings, Reborn Relics. “I like to mix old with contemporary,” she says. “To make it work, we stay away from dark wood tones—washed and bleached finishes work really well in transitional spaces.” In the shower, what appears to be marble is actually a large-scale porcelain slab from Acme Brick and Tile. Ranouil chose hexagon-shaped tile for the floor, which extends just beyond the shower’s glass doors. “The room already had new hardwood floors, but hardwood and water are obviously not a good combination,” Ranouil explains, who designed the shower to slope gently toward the linear drain in the center. “A designer is only as good as the installers, and here, they did a beautiful job executing my vision,” she says. The marble-look tile inspired the room’s color scheme of gray and white. “Gold and champagne tones are very popular right now, and they can really warm up a cold color scheme,” Davis says of the brushed bronze fixtures by Delta. The adjoining master bedroom—designed by Davis—is awash in whites, ivories, and blush, so she sought to bring a hint of that femininity to the en suite. “Meridith’s design for the bath definitely had a transitional edge, so I want to make an impact with just a few key pieces,” she says.

JONESBORO DESIGNER SEAN SHRUM CREATES A STUNNING KITCHEN THAT IS NATURALLY APPEALING

RUSTIC REVIVAL

S

Single level homes are not easy to find, especially on the golf course, but that’s exactly the type of home this homeowner and her husband had been hoping for, so when the only single-level home in their neighborhood went up for sale, they didn’t waste any time purchasing it. A NATURAL DIRECTION The homeowner worked with Sean Shrum of Sean Shrum Studio in Jonesboro to help transform the darker décor throughout the home into lighter shades complemented with natural elements. “The kitchen started off with a very contemporary feel,” Shrum says, even though it was outfitted with traditional elements such as the cabinets and granite counter tops. “Since her taste is more organic, and natural, we shifted gears.” AGED AND TIMELESS Leaving the cabinets in place, Shrum took the existing oven hood down and redesigned it by rebuilding the mantle on it and then raising the hood up to the ceiling to accommodate the new gas cooktop. In contrast to the cabinets, the metal hood was fabricated to be reminiscent of weathered zinc patina and accented with antique wood corbels dating back to the 1800s. The hood, which takes center stage in this kitchen, is set off by the backsplash of marble tile in a herringbone pattern behind the range. “The marble has a mirrored effect of the island and the surrounding countertops are a weathered quartzite and give a soft feel in contrast to the dark black accents that were in the house,” Shrum adds. REFINED TOUCHES Shrum chose a darker shade for the island, painted in Sherwin Williams Griffin, and flanked it with matching antique wood corbels from the 1800s, painted with a dark finish to better complement the island. A trio of hanging lamps centered above the island adds an aged aesthetic to the kitchen. “I wanted it to look as if it had been there for a long time so I went with the antique brass rod and the black and bronze finish,” Shrum notes. The open island houses three sling back counter stools with distinctive features of cowhide and Kilim rug cushions by Lee Industries, which add a rustic element to the kitchen and offer a relaxed area for dining. “We really wanted to keep an indoor/outdoor relationship,” Shrum concludes.

DESIGNER SEAN SHRUM TRANSFORMS A DARK, OUTDATED MASTER BATH INTO AN ORGANIC RETREAT S T O R Y: S U S A N D A R C E Y P H O T O G R A P H Y: R E T T P E E K ST YLING: CHIP JONES

A familiar street, a new house, and a master bath that was not everything this homeowner dreamed about. “It started out much darker. Before, there was lots of black trim, and black granite, and very heavily hand-painted, textured Italian wallpaper. It was much more glam than my client preferred,” says designer Sean Shrum of Sean Shrum Studio. The new homeowner, who is a huge animal lover and rescues animals, desired a simpler, yet refined space that was more fitting to her and her husband’s lifestyle. With the help of Shrum, this master bathroom was transformed into a much lighter, and more natural area that gives the illusion of a small, secluded space in the woods instead of a bathroom. To create this illusion Shrum started with an intricate onyx slab in a pattern that blended with the color palate throughout the home, and then backlit the onyx around the tub with LED lighting to create a central focus point that can be viewed from all areas of the bathroom and bedroom, which are open to one another. “Rather than use a piece of art, we allowed the Onice multicolored onyx to be the art at this terminus,” Shrum says. The chandelier by Paul Ferrante was custom-made to look like a natural branch pattern and creates the aura of being outdoors. “The horizontal nature of the chandelier gives your eyes something to move to but doesn’t detract from the onyx,” Shrum notes. The existing cabinetry by Gilmore’s Custom Cabinetry was refinished with new paint and then glazed to give it a softer, more organic feel. “It was much more slick and refined so we softened it and brought it back to an organic nature,” Shrum says. In keeping with the neutral scheme throughout the bathroom and home, Shrum kept the vanity areas simple but dressed in natural element sources. For “his” vanity, Shrum accented the cabinets with Arteriors horn sconces, inspired by antique Russian hunting horns, to give it a more masculine feel. Since the master bath is open to the bedroom and connected by a walk-through dressing area, Shrum kept “her” vanity area more understated, yet stylish and feminine. “Anything that gets back to nature and natural elements is an underlying theme in their lives,” Shrum says of the homeowners. YOUR GUIDE TO...

KITCHEN & BATH RENOVATIONS

WHERE TO

START

PHOTO COURTESY OF DELTA (shown here is the "Ara" tub filler)

You’ve flipped through magazines or you’ve dropped by some of your neighbors’ renovated homes and you can’t help but notice the incredibly gorgeous kitchens and modern bathroom designs, ranging from contemporary to traditional to rustic—all so chic and up-to-date. Whether it’s just updating the countertops, appliances, and fixtures or removing walls and opening up more space, kitchens and baths have a lot in common. But where do you start?

MAKE AN OVERALL PLAN FOR YOUR NEW SPACE. Think about how you use this space, what you like about it, what works, and what doesn’t work. Make a list of the things you would like to change to make it more functional and visually appealing.

DISCOVER WHAT YOUR OPTIONS ARE by visiting local kitchen and bath shops, appliance shops, and home centers for ideas. Many times they have model kitchen and bath displays to help give you a better idea of how it might look put together. This is the best way to learn what types of cabinet styles and finishes, countertops, backsplash designs, flooring options, appliances, and fixtures are available to help you create the kitchen or bath of your dreams. Have fun at this stage and gather samples—or pictures—of the items you love and start compiling a design portfolio of your project.

FIND A PROFESSIONAL DESIGNER OR CONTRACTOR. Many design and material stores either have their own designers and installers, but if it’s out of their scope they can recommend designers and contractors to you who specialize in kitchen and bath projects. You can search online at the NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association) website for kitchen and bath professionals in your area at nkba.org. You can also ask your friends and neighbors who they’ve used for their remodeling projects—this is always a great source!

FINALIZE YOUR DESIGN PLANS. Go over the design aspects of your project with your designer or contractor. Make sure there is a mutual understanding of the direction of the project and the desired outcome—don’t overlook your budget! Next, go over the install process, particularly the time frame and make sure you and your designer or contractor are on the same page, but keep in mind that no matter how well organized the project may be, problems will occur.

Kitchens for living—and for life. Gilmore’s Kitchens set the standard for quality, style and functionality.

W

hen it comes to kitchens in Jonesboro and all over northeast Arkansas, the word Gilmore’s stands out. It’s a code word for “best” that applies not only to materials, cabinetry and appliances but also to the evolving role kitchens play in today’s homes and lifestyles.

End Notes

They may be known as hearty summer flowers, and a mecca for birds and butterflies, but nothing shows off fall more boldly than beautiful Zinnias with a bounty of colors like bright red, hot pink, purple, orange, and golden yellow. Their vibrant colors brighten up the most tired gardens at the end of summer, make the perfect handpicked bouquets, and mix beautifully slipped in with pumpkins and fall dĂŠcor. Their cheerful blooms continue to inspire us until their last cutting before the first frost.
