UNLOCKING THE POTENTIAL OF THE FOREST INDUSTRY IN NORTHERN ENGLAND Growth Strategy and Action Plan for the Forest Sector in Northern England
Our Vision
02
Roots to Prosperity is a blueprint to unlock the potential of the forestry and forest products sector across Northern England to maximise its economic potential. A detailed action plan showing how an investment of around ÂŁ23m could unlock in excess of 1,000 jobs and ÂŁ37.5m GVA will follow1.

04
Northern England has a globally competitive forestry and forest products sector with real potential for growth and jobs.
With substantial recent investment and the ability to call on a growing forest resource in Northern England and Southern Scotland the sector is uniquely able to deliver substantial low carbon growth and contribute towards sustainable economic development across rural and urban communities. The sector is also in an unrivalled position to provide additional benefits such as flood alleviation whilst creating an attractive setting in which to live, work and play.

THE FOREST RESOURCE Northern England benefits from a productive forest resource which provides high quality feedstock for the many primary processors in the region. There is a significant area of forest which is currently under-managed creating an opportunity for the sector to increase production and satisfy growing demand from processors and end-users. Northern England is home to many of the UK’s most popular forest-based recreation and tourism attractions. In Kielder Water and Forest Park over £6m has been invested in facilities in recent years and visitors now spend over £7m in the local economy every year.
CARBON The woodlands in Northern England are a significant store of carbon and each year they sequester more. Timber provides a sustainable low carbon building material and renewable fuel which can effectively displace fossil fuels.

tonnes CO2 net contribution to greenhouse gas emissions reduction each year from woodlands in the Lake District National Park.
On average, building a house in timber instead of brick reduces carbon emissions by 10 tonnes. Replacing 1 cubic metre of concrete or red brick with the same volume of timber can save up to 1 tonne of carbon dioxide emissions. 1 hectare of newly established mixed woodland will sequester on average 4.5 tonnes of CO2 each year.
ECOSYSTEM SERVICES The value of ecosystem services provided by our forests and woodlands are estimated at ÂŁ122m per year . 3

DELIVERING ON LOCAL ENTERPRISE PARTNERSHIP AND EU PRIORITIES Growth Strategy and Action Plan for the Forest Sector in Northern England
Delivering

Our Action Plan will show how the forestry sector has the ability and commitment to deliver against key priorities for LEPs as identified in their Strategic Economic Plans and supporting European Structural and Investment Funds Strategies. Taking Cumbria as an example, forestry delivers against ‘The Four-Pronged Attack’ set out in the draft Cumbria Strategic Economic Plan 2014-2024. Forestry and processing industries help achieve three of the four strategic investment priorities identified:
1 2 3
Advanced manufacturing at large-scale processors such as Iggesund in Workington.
Energy excellence is clearly demonstrated by the dramatic uptake of woodfuel at both industrial and domestic scale across the county.
Forestry supply chains support a vibrant rural and visitor economy through the provision of jobs and the backdrop of beautiful and resilient woodlands. Growth Strategy and Action Plan for the Forest Sector in Northern England
