Wood Type & Print Institute Chi c a g o , IL P rof es s o r : C ar o l Ross Barn e y F a ll 20 1 1 SF : 31 , 0 00 A village is described as a clustered settlement of people with a common occupation. Villages are typically set in mostly rural atmospheres where its inhabitants depend directly upon the land to survive. The proposed building reflects the same ideals of a village. Similar to the mechanism of living in a village, the common goal of the patrons of the building is to teach, produce and evangelize the art of wood type. In response to this realization, this building was designed to reflect the richness of a village - naturalistic decorum. These characteristics were used in sustainable and educational ways. Visitors of the museum are carried through a “forest which represents wood, the seed for producing type faces. Users then pass through the galleries which have been arranged in the order of traditional production machines, finished type faces and prints made with the type faces. Rotating resident artists are accomodated atop the canopy of the building away from the activities of the building allowing them work without interruption. 4

West Whitney Museum N e w Y ork , N e w Y or k P rofe ssor: Rob e rt McAnu l t y Fall 20 12 S F: 50,000 West Whitney is a small museum located in the Chelsea Gallery District and rests against the Highline in New York, NY. The museum houses a portion of the Uptown Whitney collection; it featuresv both paintings and sculptures in addition to more intimate spaces for new media. The design is essentially a block, wittled away at instances to create programmatic space. Its experimentation both in form and function results in a marriage between the West Whitney Museum and vibrant highline community. The physiology of the building is fun but subtle. There are dramatic changes in height throughout in conjunction with varying depths of horizontal spaces. The change in depth and height allows the audience to transverse transitions of air, light and scale.

Twifo Hemang Library (Design) Ce n tra l Re g i o n , Ghan a Pr of es s o r : F r an k Flury Sp rin g 2 0 1 3 SF : 2, 000 Students in rural areas have substantially lower test scores in the Basic Education Certificate Examination, as compared to students in bigger cities. And this was simply due to a lack of books and places to properly store them. Also absent, was a congenial atmosphere for study after normal school hours. This hindered students from pursuing any supplemental education. With this issue at hand a library was in demand. The project has a footprint of 1000 sq. ft. of covered indoor space plus an additional 1000sq. ft. of covered outdoor space. The program consists of a library room with space to study. Additional open, covered spaces provide additional space to study or meet. Utilizing passive solar strategies, rainwater collection, natural lighting and ventilation were fundamental tools for the sustainable design.

Twifo Hemang Library (Built) C e n tral Re g ion , G h a na P rofe ssor: Fran k Fl u r y S um m e r 20 13 With a shortage of funds and familiarization with the available resources in the village, we had to redesign to make the best use of what was available to us. The new design still took into consideration the climate, users and needs of the area. The use of cement screen blocks was adopted to not only serve aesthetic purposes but to also allow cross ventilation, sunlight and provide a semi open covered area which students had access to after hours. The project made use of rural concrete building techniques and several improvemtns implemented by the team. The building process was a chance to get hands on experience while practically applying the knowledge from school to a real life situation.

Furniture Design After studying the Red and Blue Chair designed by furniture designer and architect Gerrit Rietveld, I refocused the construction methods of the Red and Blue chair to design the table. The table uses reclaimed wood and glass in the vein of sustainable living. The table’s construction features 1 inch lathes and uses 1/8th inch dowels to connect the joints. The intent is to create furniture that is economical in both ingredient and process.
