HOUSE ONE

2012-2013

In 1982, a house was built, to house a family. On the joint occasion of the youngest’s independence and the oldest’s announcement of engagement, the house underwent its second birth, 30 years later. The house is simply remodelled, and the removal of the pattern-book tyrannies - blind corridor, meagre windows, flat ceilings, lack of light - frees up the parents to inhabit the house more intuitively. A simple language of white walls, hardwood floors and aluminium windows is employed. In essence the house jumps back to a more primitive Irish rural house - living spaces at the centre, pivoting round the hearth and stove, sleeping spaces to each end, quietly enclosed. A house knows that there is inevitably surgery in store for it John Hejduk
