Budget for a Puppet Event Proposal I want to create a puppet making workshop for adults. The workshop will be based around the idea of junk marionettes. The workshop will last around 7 hours with an hour break during which lunch will be served. [First 30minutes] Participants will be invited to select two or three items from a chest that they engage creatively with, taking into account particular elements of the human form (Would this lightbulb create an interesting head?) [Next 30 minutes] When objects and their purposes have been decided upon, participants will draw (to scale) front and side views of their puppets. The objects they have chosen will be incorporated into a design and they will be encouraged to expand on the aesthetic they have begun filling in elements they lack. Eg. Drawing in hands and arms, a head design or feet. There will also be a selection of pre-made generic torsos, arm sections with joints, leg sections with joints and pelvises. [1hour and 30 minutes] Super Sculpy will be dived between the adults and they will be helped to realise their designs by sculpting. I, as the workshop leader, will help them transfer their two dimensional images into realised, three dimensional elements for their puppets.
Lunch [30 minutes] (Their sculpted elements will be fired as lunch is served.) [30 minutes] I will give a demonstration of puppet joints and how to create them, these puppets will likely have simple sting necks although for wrist, elbow and knee joints I will probably incorporate ideas gathered from John Robert’s workshop, using leather, dowel and string. I will have prepared a range of body parts and their respective joint pieces that the participants will be able to select, simply construct and then decorate with various materials. [1 hour] Participants will lay their objects and made items over their initial design and think about what they now need to create a finished puppet. They will select arm, leg and torso pieces as necessary and assemble the pre-prepared joints. [1 hour] Entire puppet bodies with working joints will be assembled by the group. I will assist and problem solve at this stage. [1 hour] The puppets will be painted and decorated by the group with screw eyes added in strategic places ready for stringing.
[1 hour] I will begin by briefly outlining things to consider when stringing a puppet (information gathered during a workshop with Eric Wright.) I will then hand out pre- prepared crosses and help the group string up their puppets, thinking always about weight distribution, balance and movement. [30 minutes] The group will present the puppets they have created to one another. If anyone’s puppet is left unfinished I will give advice on how it can be completed at home.

Total Cost when both Budgets combined: $457.60 The preparation for this workshop will conservatively be two days. I will then have to work for a day leading the event. If I assume I will have 6-8 people per session, In order to cover costs alone I will need to charge: 6 people……………$77 per person 8 people……………$57.20 per person
When I worked with Caroline Bowman and Nick Barnes on the firebird I learned that her daily rate was £120. We worked very long hours and so if I fixed my day rate at $120 per day (working slightly shorter hours.) and factored this into the budget I would be paying myself $360 for the entire workshop process, Prices for costumers would then need to be raised to. 6 people……………$137 per person 8 people……………$102.20 per person I have looked at other workshops on the website I would become a member of. No-one offers anything puppetry related however the price I would be charging falls into the lower end of mean prices across workshops of a similar length. If I find I need to spend more time preparing for the event I could afford to charge a little more and still be within a range people seem willing to pay. If I need to earn more money per session I could also encourage more people to come and hold classes for up to 12. This is manageable for one person. In this case I would only need to adjust the lunch budget. In the event that the sessions were popular I could expand, invited 22 people per session to take part. In this case I would need to employ an extra person and factor that into my budget. I would also perhaps search for a bigger venue through the website I outlined. The lunch budget would need to increase and materials budget would change. Ie. More sculpy and potentially objects would be needed. Depending on the drain on resources this could prove more or less profitable. Progression I live very near an arts space called ‘the living gallery’. This is available to rent and so I could potentially develop this project, if it were successful, hire the gallery and use to run workshops and display art I had created. http://www.the-living-gallery.com/Rentals-.html Information on what is included in rentals. This could be removed from my budget… Al ipod/mp3 speakers
