The design proposal is an answer to a competition on demand of a UK registered charity who builds schools in developing countries such as Senegal in Africa. For designing an 8-classrooms school there were requirements listed. Using locally sourced, sustainable, recycled materials, applying construction techniques that do not require any prior technical skills in construction, and adapting to the local climate were among the list to research innovative and low-cost construction techniques in order to replace a temporary school with built structures.
The proposed building is inspired by the vernacular architecture of the local Diola people. Their centuries-old circular houses, called impluvium huts, are made with the natural material at hand, and give valuable lessons on living and building in the tropical climate.
