Sonic Healing Centre At the Sonic Healing Centre people with different types of cancer are being treated with High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HIFU). It is quite a recent and unknown technique and compared to regular cancer treatments it barely does any harmfull damage. This sound-based treatment inspired me to design a flowing spatial experience, as a place for healing, comfort and future cancer research.

neon forest When designing for rivercruise company Scylla my main focus was on making the trip attractive for younger people. In order to do that I looked at the more unusual ways of sleeping and living, such as treehouses. This eventually became the biggest source of inspiration for my design and led me to fully remove the original layout of the boat and replace it with freestanding neon-lit treehouses. They are placed in a floating forest with an interactive LED floor functioning as the river underneath.

C O T T O N PAV I L I O N STATEMENT

With this pavilion I want people to start thinkng about what really matters: making as much money as possible, or a healthy environment for all life on earth? While we could easily transfer to less harmfull energy sources, we still continue to mine oil and gas because it continues to bring in money We produce and cusume more and more but at the same time we create tons of waste. We can no longer continue to live this. Banknotes are made of cotton fibre. This is why I chose to create the pavilion out of cotton. When researching this material I found out that we cause significant damage to the cotton plant, the environment and the workers in the cotton industry. And that's all because we need as much as new c lothing as possible and big corporations can make big money out of it. We continue to damage the earth but at the same time it is all we have. I believe that people, especially in the Western world, should be more aware of this. Nature is real and tangible. We depend on it. It forms our world. Money is a concept invented by man. It is actually nothing. An illusion. Based on this comparison I designed the pavilion consisting of two connected spaces with an identical shape. One space is built up of plate material made of cotton and Paverpol (an environmental friendly textile hardener). The other a network of cotton ropes. But because it is just a framework you are actually not protected at all. This is meant to represent the illusion of money. We often think that money can protect us, from anything. But what if it really goes wrong? What is money still worth?

The main function of a park is finding a moment of relaxation in our busy every day lives. Technology helps us making our lives easier but it can also be a huge source of distraction and sometimes we can forget what is really important. There is a lot of technology around us. Visible and unvisible. For the museumpark and the new, yet to be built, collection building for the Boijmans Museum I wanted to use its mirroring facade by creating a reflection of its invisible surroundings.

To collect the data for my design I used an app called White Spots designed for VPRO Tegenlicht. It measures the radiation in your immediate surroundings and it shows the transmission towers on your screen. I used this data to create the diagrams as shown on the next page.
