TREE PAVILION THIRD YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT TWO
Concept project for Caeserstone Student Competition. The open brief allowed for a choice of site and program. The idea of the tree pavilion is to provide a space which acts a break from the metonony of daily life and is able to host meetings and events for the creative community. The pavilion will in turn increase the connectivity of the creative industry and provide a platform for collaboration.

PROJECT FIVE
The design of a boutique hotel and spa in the Tsitsikamma National Park. The core issues explored include designing with the landscape and the experience of architecture in nature. The design process started on site with a photography exercise limited to five exposures. A poem written on site developed the idea of transition. This theme was explored and refined through drawing and model making. The building acts to transition the guest into the natural environment allowing a full experience of the place. Form Inspiration

CO_MODULAR SECOND YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT FOUR
The design of a mixed-use building in the urban environment Port Elizabeth. Sustainability sits as a core concern and the idea of the prefabricated modular unit was explored. Place making manifests itself over the ground floor as a public space for a market with a cafe and a park to the South. A concrete core connects the vertical circulation and acts as the community hub. The structure holds an arrangement of offices on the first floor and residential units on the second floor.

CREMATORIUM
SECOND YEAR DESIGN | PROJECT THREE The design of a new crematorium in Victoria Park, Port Elizabeth. The project seeks to explore the atmosphere for an ecumenical place of funeral and cremation. The concept revolves around the idea to raise the coffin as a symbol of celebration. This set up a vertical arrangement of spaces. The chapel sits in the ground with the cremation chamber above. A strong visual connection to the park in the north ensures a peaceful environment.

AFRIKABURN SECOND YEAR DESIGN

Initial Tree Concept
PROJECT TWO
The social experiment atmosphere of the AfrikaBurn arts festival provided an opportunity to become a contributor in the form of a sculpture. The design process began with individual ideas from the class. Parameters were set up to keep the ideas within the field of architecture and in the spirit of phenomenology, the sculpture became an interactive work. Through model making, material constraints and the limit of mobility, the ideas were refined into one. The result being a light weight wall construction, dealing with the issue of separation and gathering. A cluster of paper tubes defining the separation. After the burn and subsequent collapse, the fire creates the gathering of the community. Tectonic Development

SCULPTOR’S STUDIO SECOND YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT ONE
The design of a high performance studio space for a multi-disciplinary sculptor. The project seeks to explore the process of making and uncover the nature of the spaces required. In order to remain subdued and following principles of sustainability, a naturally vegetated roof is proposed. The ‘living pod’ is suspended over the assembly space and allows new perspectives of the sculptur’s work as well as providing views of the adjacent nature reserve.

COMMUNITY LIBRARY FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT SIX
The design of a community library to enrich the rural Moravian Mission Settlement of Clarkson. The form of the buidling is in response to the context of the site and a new courtyard is proposed including a small amphitheatre, allowing for community events to take place. The urban corridor remains open between the sea to the south and the mountains to the north. The building seeks to reconnect the community of clarkson to its history and uplift the community through education.
17
CULTURAL CENTRE FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT FIVE
A public exhibition space for the enrichment of culture within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan is proposed. The concept of this project revolves around a central courtyard and pays attention to the historically sensitive areas. The exhibition space focuses on natural lighting in order to evoke a neutral atmosphere and improve sustainability.
18
URBAN INFILL FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT FOUR
The Urban Infill project addresses the in-between spaces and the site seeks to connect two different streets. Vertical circulation was carefully considered and informed the layout of the floor spaces. The ‘brise soliel’ or sun control was incorporated as part of the building’s response to sustainable architecture.
19
BAAKENS VALLEY HOUSE FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT THREE
A small, single storey house adjacent to the Baakens Valley and Settlers Park Nature Reserve. The project follows linear architectural principles and allows for future additions. The design seeks to embrace the surrounding natural environment and follows principles of passive design.
20
MODERN HOUSE STUDY FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT TWO
The project addressed composition related to the themes and rules that have founded the discipline of architecture from antiquity. The modern house studied is Casa Del Punte by Amancio Williams. This bridge house was completed in 1945 in Mal del Plata, Argentina. The project explores the method of ink hand drawing, model making and compositional studies.
21
PALLADIAN VILLA STUDY FIRST YEAR DESIGN
|
PROJECT ONE
The first research theme investigates the work of the Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and in specific the Villas, which demonstrate clearly Palladio’s research project on “the house’, as the Villas are variations on the same themes taken from Antiquity of Rome and masterfully re-invented. The project explores the method of pencil hand drawing, model making and compositional studies.
22
MANDELA UNIVERSITY GATEWAY PERSONAL IDEA PROJECT
The design of a new gateway for Nelson Mandela University. The project seeks to improve pedestrian movement, introduce bicycle lanes and instill a new identity along with the recent university name change. The entrance sits at a critical position where it greets the visitor and daily user, therefore a small intervention can produce a big impact.
23
HIGHWAY CONVERSION IDEA COMPETITION
A department competition project to “Imagine the future of Port Elizabeth”. The idea follows the example of the Highline in New York and adjusts to the context of South Africa. The scheme seeks to revive the city centre while responding to the issue of sustainability.
