TD slams HSE over service to disabled Independent Deputy Michael Fitzmaurice reacted angrily to revelations that students with severe disabilities within the Roscommon/East Galway constituency would be without specially adapted chairs on their return to school in September. Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “It has come to my attention that children in this constituency with severe disabilities and who would be starting back to school in Septem-
ber, and who are brought to school by their parents, are being disadvantaged by a lack of efficiency in the HSE. “Three specially adapted chairs for these children were to be ordered on the 1st of June” he said, adding that his information is that “clerical officers in the HSE” did not do their job and that, consequently, the chairs that these children need will not be ready in time.
“The HSE are offering an alternative chairs that are not nearly as good as the ones that should have been ordered. The question that I would ask is why are these people not doing their job?” Deputy Fitzmaurice continued by calling on Minister for Health Simon Harris to take immediate action. “If they (HSE clerical officers) do not do their job there are repercussions for these children and that
cannot be tolerated. The finance is in place for these chairs and equipment and I am assured of that, and everything was in place, and the least we should expect is that these people do their job properly. “I am calling on Minister Harris to investigate what went on here and if there are people who did not attend to the job that they should be doing then they are not fit for that position and the Minister should take appropriate action.”

CALM, RELAXED AND IN PEACE WITH YOURSELF
newsbriefs Fitzmaurice calls for more rural Gardaí Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has called for a stronger Garda presence in rural areas following news this week that Gardaí have broken up a criminal gang behind robberies across rural Ireland. The gang, which Gardaí believe was based in Co. Laois, had been conducting surveillance operations on farms to identify specific items of property, which were then stolen to order. Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “I welcome the news that the Gardaí have broken up a crime gang that were allegedly behind hundreds of robberies in rural Ireland. It is also significant that Gardaí identified a farming insider who was supplying information such as access codes to gates and locks and locations of keys, etc. as a vital member of that gang. “This is what I have been saying all along …that these criminals are getting information locally and that local intelligence is so important when it comes to solving crimes like these. Local Gardaí stationed in rural areas were always able to pick up this kind of information and it is time that we returned to that situation.”

Did you know that 27 people die of heart attacks in Ireland every day? Heartwave Cardio Screening back in Athlone Heartwave Cardio Screening is returning to Athlone with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The Bpro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and non-invasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a health stats
certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the Bpro to the Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone on Tuesday 9th August. Appointments are essential and are available from 10.45 am until late. For further information or to make an appointment, please contact: Anna on 086-4135555 or Jimmy on 0862566422. Email: heartfeltcardioscreening@gmail.com or check out the website: bproheartfeltcardioscreening. com. (Advertorial).
HEARTFELT CARDIO SCREENING BY BPRO About Heartfelt Cardio Screening
Can Save Your Life
Screening is non invasive and is 99.17% as accurate as an angiogram. This device also tests the stiffness of the arteries, (as we get older our arteries get stiff with a build-up of plaque and cholesterol which can prevent the blood from flowing freely). The Screening tests your heart, your arteries and blood pressure, giving you your overall heart health.

I recently returned from my summer holidays abroad and unfortunately I sustained a relatively serious injury at the apartment complex where I was staying. I cut my leg on a sharp tile in the swimming pool and I was hospitalised for a number of days. I booked my package holiday through a tour operator and whilst their representative was very helpful she did not offer me any advice regarding compensation for my injuries. Given that the incident occurred abroad am I obliged to issue legal proceedings abroad? If you booked your holiday as a “package holiday” through a tour operator you may be able to make an injury compensation claim against the tour operator for your injuries and any related financial losses. A package holiday is defined under the Package Holidays and Travel Trade Act 1995 (the “Act”) as a combination of two or more of the following, when sold or offered for sale at an inclusive price:- (i) transport; (ii) accommodation; (iii) other significant elements of a tourist service nature. Under the Act a tour operator may be held responsible for all of the services provided as part of a package holiday including holiday accommodation. Consequently, the tour operator may be liable if the accommodation fails to comply with the standards of health and safety in that country. Legal proceedings may be brought before the Courts in the country where the injured party resides or where the incident occurred. Obviously, it is preferable to bring proceedings in one’s own country. It is important to engage a Solicitor as soon as possible to advise you on the best course of action to take. Please contact Byrne Carolan Cunningham dedicated Litigation Department in confidence for expert advice. This column is prepared by Dolores Gacquin, Solicitor. €5m betting coup in Roscommon < PAUL HEALY
B
ookmakers were hit for an estimated €5m on Tuesday when what has been described as “a well orchestrated betting coup” was pulled off at Roscommon Races. Three horses trained by the same man and all ridden on the evening by Davy Russell all won at short prices after their odds had dramatically changed during the course of the day. Charles Byrnes trained all three horses and Davy Russell duly rode all three home to victory. The odds on the three winning have been calculated at about 3,300/1. There was a special atmosphere at the Roscommon Racecourse as speculation mounted throughout the day about the impending coup. The fact that the odds on the three horses in question had drastically fallen sparked a frenzy of interest in their races. The drama unfolded with the 6.40 race, the Paul Byron Shoes Maiden Hurdle. The winner, ‘War Anthem’, finished at 6-1 after being 16-1 on Tuesday morning. The second winner was ‘Mr Smith’ in the next race of the evening, the JF Hanley Handicap Hurdle. Earlier in the day this horse had been available at 12/1, but it returned as 7/4 favourite after keen betting interest. In the 8.10 race, sponsored by Class Grass, ‘Top of the Town’ won to complete the extraordinary treble. That horse finished as 5/4 favourite, having been available earlier at 16/1! Mr. Byrnes told the media that the coup “had not been a long time in the planning” and that it was “needed” after his experiences at the recent Galway Festival. “It’s just the way it turned out. I won’t say that I planned this. I just had a bunch of six or seven horses that hit form and I thought, to hell with it, I may as well throw three or four of them in together and we only put it together in the last couple of weeks.”
Horse trainer Charles Byrnes (far right) pictured with family and friends in Roscommon on Tuesday, moments after ‘Top of the Town’ won to complete the extraordinary treble. (Local sponsor, Padraic Cuddy of Class Grass, fifth on left, makes the presentation).
‘It was meant to be a quiet evening…’
P
addy Power’s Paul Bin-
field said his firm was “praying for a miracle” after Russell’s first two victories. “Even though we were onto the treble quite early, we’ve paid out well into six figures between the three of them,” said Mr. Binfield, who added: “Well done to Charles on a well orchestrated gamble!” Betfred spokesman Matt Hulmes added: “Charles Byrnes
and Davy Russell have had it off in grand style on what was expected to be a quiet evening. “We managed to just stay on top of the liabilities early doors but it is still a hit in the satchels and coming on the back of Goodwood it’s certainly the punters who are in clover at present.” Boylesports’ Liam Glynn said: “Alarm bells rang early on Tuesday morning with every
housewife across the country having their fivers on the three horses. Our wounds are sore but you have to admire Mr. Byrnes on his training performance.” William Hill’s Jon Ivan-Duke added: “It was an industry-wide move and all bookmakers, especially online, have been stung. “Our traders were on top of the move early and mitigated the gamble but it is still a hard pill to swallow, especially given the

previous form of the horses.” Ladbrokes’ David Williams said his firm had been hit for “much more than pocket money”. “The onus seems to be on bookmakers to have the best systems in place to limit their exposure to scenarios like the Roscommon gamble. “We are happy enough with how we managed it, despite shelling out much more than pocket money.”

Aisling hoping to bloom in Tralee!
Domnick
Roscommon Rose Aisling McNeill was given a wonderful send-off by her supporters in P. Kelly’s Bar in Roscommon town last Sunday evening. Aisling will head to the Dome in Tralee on Wednesday, August 17th as she attempts to make the televised selections on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd. She will be among 65 Roses from all over the world who will be at this year’s extended festival which will include parades, a funfair, circus, 70 hours of free and affordable entertainment, a fashion show and fireworks displays. Aisling, a schoolteacher
from Roscommon town, said: “I’m proud and privileged to say that I am the 2016 Roscommon Rose. I’m proud of all things Irish and all things Roscommon and I can’t wait to embrace all that The International Rose of Tralee has to offer in what I know will be an experience of a lifetime.” The format for this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival has changed to allow every Rose travelling to Tralee to enjoy the event in its entirety. The Communications Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, John Drummey, said: “For the past 11 years a qualifying event was staged
in the midlands at the end of May at which 32 Roses were selected to appear on TV in August and ultimately get to enjoy all the fun of the Festival. The good news is that every Rose who is selected will travel to the Festival in Tralee. The Roses will still take part in a qualifying process, as RTE can only accommodate 32 Roses on live TV with Dáithí Ó Sé.” Roscommon Rose Aisling will find out on Sunday, August 21st whether or not she has made the televised selection. The televised selections will be broadcast as usual at 8 pm on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd August on RTÉ One. Roscommon Rose Aisling McNeill is preparing for the International Rose of Tralee Festival later this month.
Dr. O’Mara launches carers’ support group Dr. Gerry O’Mara, Consultant Geriatrician, officially launched The Carers Support Group for Families living with Dementia. The event took place on Tuesday, July 26th in The Melting Pot in Roscommon town. This support group is a joint initiative by Family Carers Ireland, The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland, Western Alzheimer’s and the HSE. The prevalence of the number of people living with the condition has increased from 47,849 in 2011 to 55,000 in 2016. Dementia is a condition that can place high demands on family car-
ers and the support group is a vital place for carers to support each other. Dr. O’Mara was delighted to support this initiative and wished every success to all involved. Support Group meetings will take place on the last Tuesday of every month. For further information please contact Family Carers Ireland at 090 6627698. Meanwhile, Marian Harkin MEP donated €2,500 to Family Carers Ireland Roscommon. This is part of Marian’s Oireachtas pension which she has not claimed since she went to Europe. This year Marian donated her full pension to
different offices of Family Carers Ireland. Marian has been and is a strong ambassador for family carers and has always been a champion of their cause. She is part of an interest group in Europe for Carers. This group was established by Kathy Sinnott and is being continued by Marian. Each year Marian gives family carers an opportunity to visit Brussels for a weekend. This is a great break for carers and a unforgettable experience as they have the privilege of being able to attend the European Parliament and also sit with an interest group and offer their views. This
October Marian is giving four carers an opportunity to travel to Brussels. This will take place from the October 17th to 19th. If
you are a family carer and would like to be considered for this trip please phone Family Carers Ireland Office at 090 6627698.

Famore School Reunion in Hodson Bay Hotel
Halal Wedding at the Landmark Hotel
T
he Landmark Hotel in
Carrick-on-Shannon recently played host to a very special Halal wedding celebration as Khaleeq Nazir from Ballyhaunis celebrated his marriage to Sabah Tahir from Man-

There will be memories aplenty at the Famore National School Reunion in the Hodson Bay Hotel on Saturday evening, August 13th. Famore NS Kiltoom opened on July 1st, 1837 and closed in July of 1981 when a new central school was opened at Ballybay, Kiltoom. Famore was mainly a two-teacher school for most of its school life. Some 200 plus invitations to past pupils have been extended for the reunion and a big number have responded in the affirmative. This will prove to be a wonderful opportunity to meet once again with old school friends over finger food, sandwiches and drinks. Food will be served in the hotel after the annual August Cemetery Mass in Kiltoom cemetery on that Saturday evening. Donations of €15 are being requested of past pupils towards overall costs. There will be a display of photographs, articles and memorabilia associated with the life of the school up until its closure in July of 1981. Past-pupils who have old photographs or other items of memorabilia are requested to post them to: Tommy Dolan, the PP Reunion Secretary, 7 Willow Road, Connell Drive, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, prior to August 13th. They may also bring them along with them on the evening of the function.
Irish celebration of their marriage. With their own chef in tow it was a full Halal wedding with traditional menus and formalities. A spokesperson for the Landmark Hotel said: “Sabah’s gown and head piece were stunning
– beautiful, delicate pieces of art. Weighed down by thousands of hand-stitched jewels, Sabah was elegant beyond words. It was an exquisite event, beautiful from beginning to end.”

Failure rate of septic tanks remains high < EOGHAN YOUNG-MURPHY
The failure rate of septic tank inspections has remained very high in Co. Roscommon recently, with 64 per cent of the tests conducted over the past year found to be substandard. Roscommon County Council, which conducts the inspections on behalf of the Environmental Protection Agency, has released the latest figures under the Freedom of Information Act. Of the 42 inspections carried out between July 1st, 2015, and June 30th, 2016, 27 failed, while 15 passed. Twenty-eight of the tests were conducted in the final six months of last year, with 19 failing and nine passing. Fourteen were conducted in the first
half of 2016, with eight failing and six passing. In many cases, there were multiple reasons for non-compliance, with the most common being ‘operation and maintenance’, ‘leakage from the system’ and ‘risk to human health or the environment’. Co. Roscommon’s failure rate has consistently been one of the highest in the country since the inspections were introduced in 2012. After failing an inspection, the householder is issued an advisory notice that instructs them to bring their tank up to standard within about six months. Grants of up to €4,000 are available, but local councillors have said that householders often face bills of up to €15,000 to rectify or replace their tanks.

Roscommon County Council has urged the Government to ban the use of wild animals in circuses because of recent “appalling” and “inhumane” incidents. Sinn Féin councillor Michael Mulligan made the proposal at the recent monthly meeting of the local authority. It was seconded by Orla Leyden, of Fianna Fáil, and agreed by members. “Some of the sights that I have seen on Facebook over the last few days are absolutely appalling regarding the treatment of wild animals in the circus,” Cllr. Mulligan, from Ballaghaderreen, said.

Cllr. John Keogh, of Fianna Fáil, said that he fully supported the proposal. “Any party that would treat animals in an inhumane way…should certainly be banned,” he said. He also noted a welcome reduction in the number of animals being put down in Roscommon Dog Pound recently. “It is great to see that Roscommon Dog Pound has moved from a position where it had one of the worst records in the country for treatment of animals, in relation to euthanizing, to being a model by which other local authorities could and should be operating,” Cllr. Keogh said.

John’s Croagh Patrick Climb
J
ohn Tobin (29) from Williamstown, Co. Galway is well-known throughout County Roscommon. John attends Brothers of Charity Cherry House Special Needs Centre in Roscommon as he has Cerebral Palsy and is a wheelchair user. This September, John is taking on a major and exciting challenge – he is planning to climb Croagh Patrick. John says: “I have had a dream for some time now to climb Croagh Patrick in Co. Mayo. I have a brilliant team of people behind me who are helping me to achieve this goal. I hope that the climb will take place in September of this year. I am very excited about this!” John’s connections with Roscommon are well established. Speaking of the Brothers of Charity Cherry House Special Needs Centre – and of his links with the county – he says: “I am very happy in this Centre and if you happen to be in Roscommon town you can usually see me driving around in my motorised wheelchair.” John is an avid Galway GAA fan and also loves country music. Now he is looking forward to his Croagh Patrick challenge and grateful to everyone who is helping with this exciting project. “I receive excellent support from family, carers and friends. They are always focussed on my ABILITY, rather than my DISABILITY. I want to thank everyone for their support to date and I look forward to your continued support in the weeks leading up to September!”
Members of the Climb With John team were in the Bank of Ireland on Friday last promoting the attempt to climb Croagh Patrick. Roscommon People Editor Paul Healy said: “John is very well-known in Galway and Roscommon and throughout the region. People know John and they can’t but be inspired by his infectious good humour and positivity. “When we were asked if we could assist with John’s Climb, we were delighted to offer our support. It promises to be a remarkable event in September and we
wish John and his team every success. No doubt it will be great fun too! The other aspect of this which appealed to us is the fact that the fund-raising element will help some excellent local and very worthy causes. “The Roscommon People is fully behind John’s Climb and we urge the public to support the campaign at every opportunity.”
Roscommon native on Provincial Council of Congregation
Pictured in Emmaus Retreat House, Swords, Co. Dublin are Fr. Fergal Maguire, Fr. Michael Ruddy and Fr. Ultan Naughton.
Roscommon town native, Fr. Ultan Naughton, was elected to the Provincial Council of his religious order in Ireland and England in Emmaus Retreat House, Swords, Co. Dublin on June 9th. The meeting, called a Provincial Chapter, requires all the brothers and priests in Ireland and England to attend to elect a new leadership team to steer the order in its charism and mission for the next three years. The new provincial elected was Fr. Michael Ruddy, originally from Co. Mayo; Fr. Fergal Maguire from Dublin and Fr. Ultan were elected as
his councillors. Fr. Ultan is the son of Michael and Anne Naughton from Correal, Roscommon. He was ordained in the Church of the Sacred Heart in Roscommon over three years ago. He is currently based in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Acton. The order that Fr. Ultan belongs to is the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. It is a missionary order spread all over the world and has a number of other County Roscommon priests. These include Fr. Matt Shanley and his brother Fr. Gerry from north Ros-
common, currently in Fairhaven and Texas, USA, respectively. Fr. Michael Kelly from Roscommon town is currently on the island of Molokai. Fr. Ultan has previously been in Indonesia, Philippines, Spain and the USA. Currently he is raising funds to help renovate and extend churches on the island of Flores in Indonesia and in Alanjury, India. The order is continually looking to hear from people interested in a vocation to religious life and they can be contacted through their website at www.sacred-hearts.net.

From My Kitchen Table MIRIAM KERINS
Why I’m concerned about Pokémon app’s series of unfortunate events I
love technology just as much as the next per-
son; I love my phone and I love that it keeps me connected to my family, friends and the rest of the world; however this bloody Pokémon Go app lark – a game users with too much time on their hands are downloading to their phones – is really getting on a very sensitive part of my anatomy! You see folks, since its release to around 38 countries last month, we’ve had dopes of every description dropping everything to risk their lives in a bid to engage in this game. However, for those of you who’ve been living under a rock and don’t know what I’m talking about…let me enlighten you. In order to get involved in the Pokémon Go phenomenon, players must first download the app, which taps into your mobile phone’s GPS and camera to make Pokémon cartoon characters appear as if they are literally part of the background of the user’s surroundings…do try to keep up with me here…and then, like zombies, the users physically wander aimlessly around real-life world locations in search of the little virtual monsters. Now, I know this initiative is a great way to get couch potatoes and those with absolutely nothing to do with their days to increase their overall movements, encouraging otherwise sedentary individuals to get up and get out into the fresh air; and that’s great. And sure didn’t the Irish Mirror report that Wicklow man, David Brennan, who says he travels nearly 50 miles a day up to the big shmoke to play the game, impressively manage to shed nearly half a stone in
one week, explaining: “On the Monday I spent about six hours (walking around), Tuesday – five, Wednesday and Thursday four each, Friday about six again then Saturday three.” Well done to him. However, the fact is, there are major drawbacks to this game and I’d advise parents to please keep an eye on kids who may be spending too much time getting absorbed by the new-fangled, nine-day wonder, and, for obvious reasons, never allow them to drift off alone. Since its launch, I’ve been reading about (to quote author Daniel Handler under his nom de plume Lemony Snicket, and his most famous book) ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events’ associated with users. Things like muggings, injuries and car accidents have been linked to many players who take to the streets and get distracted, showing a total disregard for their own and other people’s safety in their bid to catch the little cartoon characters. In
one of the worst incidents, an 18-year-old teenager from Guatemala was actually shot dead as he and a mate were reportedly playing the game when, I suppose thinking it was okay to trespass on someone’s property, they broke into a home in a bid to catch one of the virtual monsters. Now how utterly tragic is that? Last week, while driving slowly through Roscommon town, as I passed by Boots pharmacy on my left, a male teenager, hand-held mobile device up to his face, totally oblivious to his surroundings – even more engrossed that he would possibly become while texting some cute girl in his class – without any warning, in a remarkably close shave, eyes glued to his Pokémon prey’s location, dashed straight into the path of my car. Luckily I had spotted him out of the corner of my eye and had slowed down to a complete stop; however, the car coming in the opposite direction hadn’t and the dozy kid was nearly struck. I can tell you he got a right mouthful from both me and the other driver who nearly hit him. His reaction? Too absorbed by the game, he cursed us for making him fail to catch the elusive Pikachu. Now I don’t know about you folks, but hunting down these fake monsters in an augmented virtual reality has got me concerned about certain safety issues associated with the real world; so while players may meet friends, lose a bit of weight and get fit, at this rate they mightn’t live long enough to enjoy the benefits.
A brutal crime committed by cowardly sleazeballs I know the Ninth Lock Road in Dublin quite well; it’s a busy, bustling road linking Lucan with Clondalkin and the popular Mill Shopping Centre where, for four years, myself and himself – often under severe threat – as volunteers, ran a nightly mobile veterinary clinic for pet owners who were unable, for whatever reason, to afford private veterinary care for their fur babies. It was a public service for those who needed it and we were happy to provide it. It was on this Ninth Lock Road last Thursday that a young woman, in the early hours of the morning on her way home, was attacked by three thugs who lay in wait to ambush, violate and savagely rape her. The close-knit community, I won’t lie, has its fair share of, let’s say, social problems, i.e. a few scumbags prowl locally. But there are also good decent people there, and sure what community doesn’t have its share of colourful characters and hard
nuts? In fact, a couple of times, when treating sick animals, and within view of the Garda station, we were actually threatened at gun-point by plonkers looking for drugs and syringes…they got nothing! However, the decent people living in the Clondalkin area are rightly repulsed by this horrendous, forceful,
sickening, highly intentional attack on a defenceless young woman. It is this local repulsion and anger that’s proved invaluable to investigating officers and calls began to quickly flood the Ronanstown Garda Station information line, where within hours, detectives arrested persons of interest and I have no doubt, given the CCTV footage from the nearby Esso service station, DNA and other forensic evidence it won’t be long before the perverted, deviant, cowardly sleazeballs ressponsible for this crime get their comeuppance. In the meantime, I hope this young woman receives all the help, love and support she deserves in her bid to deal with the heartache and torture of her trauma. Her feelings may run from anger to fear, to guilt and to self-persecution. However, this was not her fault, she did absolutely nothing wrong, she did not deserve this brutal attack and degradation; she is entirely and wholly innocent. I wish her light and healing.

Seriously folks, I once interviewed George Clooney via satellite and re-homed a shelter dog with Bono’s missus, so perhaps their people will call my people because if having a scant association fifty times removed from a celebrity makes you eligible, I should be a shoe-in for next year’s line-up. Mary McAleese officially opens ‘The Courthouse’ in Ballygar < DAN DOONER
The community of Ballygar gathered in the beautiful sunshine on Sunday, July 17th to celebrate the official opening of ‘The Courthouse’ the Ballygar Tidy Towns centre for community endeavours. The building served as a Court of Law from 1850 to the 1940s, a Parish Hall from 1908 to the 1990s and a Credit Union from the 1990s to 2007. In 2014 Ballygar Tidy
Towns committee purchased the building and restored the premises. The former President of Ireland, Dr. Mary McAleese, officially opened the building in Ballygar’s Market Square, accompanied by her husband, Dr. Martin McAleese. Michéal Naughton, chairperson of Ballygar Tidy Towns, welcomed the McAleeses on behalf of the community. Michéal thanked all in attendance for coming out on the day
and also highlighted the hard work and commitment of the volunteers who contributed to renovation works. Secretary of Ballygar Tidy Towns, Tomás Kenny, acted as Master of Ceremonies on the day, while vice-secretary, Diane Davies, led the Prayer of Blessing. The Athlone music group ‘The Bize,’ provided the the music, playing some of Dr. McAleese’s favourite pieces. A poem was commis-
sioned especially for the day. It was composed by Margaret Hannigan, a Ballygar native. The poem was entitled ‘The Spirit of Ballygar’. Dr. McAleese presented an inspirational keynote address where she emphasised that “nothing was impossible.” She was later presented with gifts crafted by Christy Galvin, vice-treasurer of Ballygar Tidy Towns and Gary Mannion, Tidy Towns volunteer.

In the past, it was labelled by Tidy Towns judges as “bland and bleak looking”, but recently a landmark stone wall at Ballyleague was overhauled. Located at the Roscommon town side of the picturesque village, €5,000 was set aside for its refurbishment. “We always wanted to do something about the wall,” Jimmy Hudson, the chairman of Ballyleague Village Renewal and Tidy Towns, said. The project was part-financed by the Community Benefit Scheme that was
established by Coillte as part of the wind farm being developed at Sliabh Bán. The work was completed by Tom Fitzmaurice, from Donamon. It was officially unveiled recently by Cllr. Tony Ward, the Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council. Jimmy Hudson, Chairman of Ballyleague Tidy Towns holds a chisel for Cllr. IFA urges Minister to act on flooding < DAN DOONER
At a recent meeting with OPW Minister Sean Canney, IFA President Joe Healy said farmers expect significant efforts will be made to alleviate flooding, which has become more frequent in recent times. Mr. Healy said: “The consultation on the recently published Draft Shannon
CFRAM is an opportunity to put in place measures that will address the flooding issues, which previous governments have failed to tackle.” The IFA President also pointed out that “environmental designations must not be allowed to hold back necessary work that needs to be carried out to alleviate flooding. The
public good must be paramount in decisions on the protection of households, farmland and other businesses along the river and surrounding areas.” At the same meeting, IFA Flood Project Chairman Padraic Joyce highlighted the ongoing problems with water levels: “Some turloughs in the west of Ireland have not sufficiently
gone down. There are still instances of houses flooded and roads impassable in some areas.” Mr. Joyce continued: “Turloughs must be part of a flood management strategy and he called for the necessary expertise to be employed in these areas to find a solution to the problem.” The Flood Project Chair-
man also pointed out that there are still works being held up in areas where money has been allocated under the minor works scheme. He added: “It is up to Minister Canney to ensure that all impediments, whether by local authority, NPWS, or any other agency, are tackled so that flood relief measures can go ahead”.

IFA Rural Development chairperson Joe Brady has insisted that Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed must ensure that farmers who are now making their claims for TAMS payment are paid quickly. Mr. Brady said delays in payments and approvals have left a very sour taste in farmers’ mouths and the Minister must now clearly demonstrate his commitment to this vitally important farm investment scheme. He said: “The approval rate for TAMS applications must also be speeded up as it is clear that some counties are falling behind in approvals to commence work.” The chairperson added: “In the case of the Sheep Fencing grant, introduced in the third tranche which finished on June 24th, immediate approval is now necessary as the window to carry out work in 2016 is narrowing.”

Ministers ‘turning a blind eye’ to plight of patients – Fitzmaurice < DAN DOONER
Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice has accused various Ministers of “turning a blind eye” to the failing health system after recent ambulance shortages caused a patient in the Roscommon/Galway constituency to miss out on important hospital appointments. Deputy Fitzmaurice described the plight of the patient who has
missed recent appointments after being recently released from a 14month hospital stay. “For one appointment the ambulance was late and when the man arrived at the hospital the clinics had ended. This man has another appointment next Thursday for Roscommon Hospital but he has been told to call on Wednesday to see if there is an ambulance available.
“What sort of a situation is this? Here we have a consultant waiting, an ambulance is booked a week in advance but now there is no guarantee of that appointment going ahead. It’s completely unacceptable. Is Finian McGrath, the Minister for People with Disabilities, Simon Harris who is the Minister for Health, and Minister Helen McEntee who deals with mental health issues aware that
this is going on? This was brought to the attention of the previous Minister many times, so they should know. They have stood up in the Dáil many times criticising the health system and what needs to be done but as far as I’m concerned they are turning a blind eye to what’s going on. Do these Ministers live in the real world or are they worried about these people at all?”
Murphy still in tune with radio…
Eugene Murphy, Fianna Fáil TD, is pictured with John Purcell, the chairman of the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland, and Denis Naughten, the Minister for Communications, at the unveiling of a plaque in Dublin to celebrate 100 years of radio in Ireland.
Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has hailed the role of local radio, an industry he worked in for over twenty years. Deputy Murphy attended the unveiling of a plaque on O’Connell Street, Dublin. He said the plaque, erected following cooperation between the Independent Broadcasters of Ireland and RTÉ, “marks 100 years of Irish radio and also the 25th anniversary of Independent radio in Ireland.” Deputy Murphy said that radio and particularly local radio was a powerful medium in connecting with the public. “Figures show that some 83 per cent of Irish adults tune in daily and listen for almost four hours a day, so the quality and reach of Irish radio is very powerful.”
Fears of internet overload! < DAN DOONER
Great news kids! Your long, boring summers of XBOX and gripping television might be at an end. Roscommon County Council has come up with an innovative idea which should significantly reduce the amount of screen time in homes across Roscommon. Last week councillors discussed the possibility of streaming meetings from the civic offices live on the internet. Senior relationship manager with Public-i, Matthew Jellings, gave a presentation in the Council Chamber to promote his company’s webcast services and it was enthusiastically received by several councillors. Listening to the debate, it almost seemed as if there are fears that such a stream wouldn’t be able
to cope with demand! Cllr. Paschal Fitzmaurice was the first to raise such fears: “If a large number of people log on to watch some controversial or contentious issue, will the system be capable of taking that? What kind of (numbers of) people will it be able to take?” Mr. Jellings quickly assured the Council that large audiences could be catered for. He said: “The live stream is served from a provider that can deliver on demand to an inordinate amount of people – 10,000 people. We have exceeded 10,000 people and it didn’t fail when it had that audience. It was for Bill Clinton speaking at the Labour Party conference in Blackpool that year. 10,000 viewers viewed that broadcast.” An ex-US President is
one thing, but only time will tell whether the server can cope when sitting

oscommon County Council looks set to stream its meetings on webcast – at a cost of €10,000 to install the equipment required and a further €20,000 a year to stream the content. At a recent Council meeting, Matthew Jellings, the senior relationship manager of Public-i, gave a presentation on webcasting, at the request of the Council. Public-i streams meetings on webcast for four councils in Ireland – Fingal, Dún Laoghaire, Dublin and Donegal. These are the only local authorities in the country that provide such a service to the public. Many councillors spoke in favour of the Roscommon County Council following their lead, but several queried the cost involved.
“The initial outlay will be around €10,000,” Mr. Jellings said. He said that the ongoing cost was dependent on the amount of meetings that were streamed. Eugene Cummins, the Chief Executive, spoke strongly in favour of providing the service, saying it was vital for transparency. “This is a must-do and we should do it with some haste,” he said. “The costs, I don’t think they are huge. The final costs will be subject to market forces and it will be subject to procurement as well.” Cllr. Ivan Connaughton, of Fianna Fáil, proposed that the Council go ahead with the project. This was seconded by Cllr. Nigel Dineen, an Independent, and agreed by members.

Local hoteliers concerned about Brexit Roscommon hoteliers have welcomed the continued growth in overseas visitor figures announced this week by the CSO, which show a 13% increase in trips to the country during the first half of the year. Sounding a note of caution, however, Brian Pierson, Chair of the Roscommon branch of the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) warned that risks due to the Brexit referendum decision could jeopardise continued recovery of the sector. Mr. Pierson said: “We are in uncharted territory, with sterling having dropped by 16% against the euro compared to this time last year, reducing the spending power of visitors from Britain and Northern Ireland. A sustained weakness in sterling would present a serious challenge for our local tourism industry as we compete to attract visitors and holidaymakers.”

Roscommon on Tuesday. The new €50 million facility is expected to employ up to 50 people in the area. The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise, and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor, joined Chief Executive of Jazz, Bruce Cozadd, Global Head of Life Sciences of IDA Ireland, Barry Heavey and Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Environment, Denis Naughten to mark the official opening of the facility on the 17-acre site in Monksland. This is the first directly owned, managed and operated manufacturing facility built by Jazz and the com-
pany has invested approximately €50 million in its development, which commenced in February 2014 and was supported by IDA Ireland. The facility has recently secured full regulatory approval from the United States (U.S.) Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and the Health Products Regulatory Authority in Ireland. The company expects to employ up to 50 people within three years. Jazz is a global pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland where it employees approximately 100 people. Speaking at the event, Chief Executive, Bruce
Cozadd said: “We were encouraged to come to Roscommon because of the excellent track record of this community in supporting the pharmaceutical industry and the pool of local talent available. We would like to acknowledge the local community, the Roscommon Country Council and IDA Ireland for their continued support and collaboration, and note the remarkable pro-business environment in Ireland that facilitates investments like this one.” Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor said: “Having a global pharmaceutical company of this calibre establish such a facility in
Co. Roscommon is hugely significant, demonstrating serious commitment by the company to the region. The jobs created when the facility is operating at full capacity will be of great benefit to the local area and economy.” Minister Naughten said: “Today’s opening and significant investment by Jazz Pharmaceuticals is hugely important for Monksland. It is a testament to the talent and expertise of the people of Roscommon. We welcome the new facility and greatly appreciate the investment and loyalty to the region shown by Jazz Pharmaceuticals and to the people of Roscommon.”
Local engineers invited to enter Excellence Awards Ballaghaderreen Bypass success last year Entries are now being invited from County Roscommon for the 2016 Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards held in association with ESB. These annual awards are chosen and presented by the 23,000-strong membership organisation in recognition of the achievements of engineers who have demonstrated exceptional engineering skills through their work. Last year Roscommon talent was to the fore in the
awards, with Ballaghaderreen Bypass winning the ‘Geoscience Ireland award’. (Roscommon County Council, JB Barry & Partners Ltd). The bypass is approximately 13.5 kilometres long, commencing in the townland of Currinah, and terminating in the townland of Rathkeery. Exhibiting a high standard of engineering that resulted in the award, the purpose of the scheme has been to reduce congestion, journey times and improve road safety along the N5 as well as providing a strategic corridor-link passing through Longford, Roscommon and Mayo. The deadline for entry to the 2016 awards is Friday 2 September. For further information on the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards, which will take place in the InterContinental Hotel, Dublin on Friday November 4th, and details on how to enter, log onto www.engineersireland.ie.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor
paul@roscommonpeople.ie
Paul Healy on Hillary and Donald in the race for the White House; Tipp, Mayo and others in the race for Sam; Musing on who Ireland’s greatest ever sports person is…and on enjoying August, the silly – but super – season… Thursday/Friday I saw more of the speeches from the recent Republican and Democratic conventions in America than I should perhaps admit to. Tonight/ this morning, I stayed up ridiculously late to see and hear what Hillary had to say. Ms. Clinton’s speech was fine, nothing special, perhaps delivered a bit too sharply (her tone can be a bit off-putting). Still, she’s a very safe pair of hands, indeed more than that, she’s a very accomplished politician, and probably well qualified to occupy the Oval Office. Donald Trump? Well, I don’t think he’s mad, but he might be dangerous. Then again, if he does win, he will probably be reined in by ‘his people’ – and the world won’t end. This is likely to be a close election, and a Trump win is very possible. He is becoming the ultimate anti-establishment guy, and voters worldwide are in establishment-kicking mood. Also, Hillary Clinton isn’t particularly charismatic, and is distrusted by millions of Americans. And, while I thought a frail looking Bill Clinton delivered his speech with customary charm and skill the other night, his presence during the campaign could yet backfire. Looking at Bill and Hillary now – effectively presenting themselves as a White House dream team – many

voters may think ‘we don’t want to go back to the past’ and ‘we don’t want a cosy coronation of another Clinton.’ Still, this particular trump card is such a wild card, you’d expect Hillary to win.
Saturday/Sunday On Sunday, the team gracing Croke Park with a style of football which was reminiscent of what Roscommon were producing in this season’s league, was wearing blue and gold; unfortunately it wasn’t Roscommon. Tipperary ignited the All-Ireland Football Championship at the weekend, and, God knows, it needed a bit of spark. They could have scored six goals against Galway; as it was, they won by nine points, pulling up. Clare came to the end of a great journey, but weren’t able to trouble Kerry. The Kingdom, as ever, have lots of class, but I’ll be surprised if they see Sam this September. I saw some of Cork against Donegal
on Saturday. Donegal are some championship warriors at this stage. Usually they are liable to squeeze the life out of a team; on their day they can also score freely. I didn’t see the full game, and others who did, say that Donegal weren’t particularly impressive. I will still be surprised if they don’t give Dublin lots to think about this weekend. Mayo beat Westmeath, but not very convincingly. I would love to see Mayo win the All-Ireland. They haven’t inspired confidence this season, but they will still take beating. I think they can take Tyrone.
Monday August rolls in today, and somebody, somewhere, is (quite understandably) saying ‘I can’t believe it’s the 1st of August, this year has flown.’ As I have noted before, the year never actually picks up speed or goes faster than a previous year – I think the problem might be that we live our
lives with undue speed, seldom stopping to pause. That, I imagine, is one of the reasons why mindfulness – and such techniques or approaches to living – is now ‘all the rage.’ August is a lovely month. The kids are still off school. There’s usually time to enjoy the countryside, to do a few day trips, to take a breather. In the newspaper business, it’s generally a very quiet month. Hence, the ‘silly season’ label. Courts and state agencies effectively close down. Politicians go on holiday, or at least ‘cease fire.’ If you do happen to see Enda or Simon or Leo in the coming days and weeks, they’ll be wearing a casual jacket (no tie). They’ll be photographed at football matches, festivals, race meetings and street parties. The Six-One News is already no longer stretching to 7 pm. Instead, we’re reeling in the years. The top radio presenters, some of them at least, disappear. We are left with the stand-ins. Here at the Roscommon People, PR companies
bombard us with press releases about ‘Staying safe in the sun’ and ‘How to host the perfect Barbeque’. I’d email them back and tell them there’s no sun in Roscommon just now, but most of them don’t know where Roscommon is. The Olympics will loom large this August. I detect a distinct lack of public enthusiasm. The once-great Games have been tarnished by a culture of cheating. Doping has sullied everything, stealing our faith. It is such a shame. Still, we should think of the thousands of clean athletes who have prepared for the Olympics. I think once the Games start, interest will grow. In fairness, London 2012 was tremendous. I will try to forget about the doping and await the great sporting stories that are about to be told. August gives us a chance to kind of slow the year down, certainly to smell the roses, and maybe even the rosé. Soon enough it will be time to make the school lunches.
‘Evocative reminder of Padraig’s class’ Sunday Further proof that ‘form is temporary and class is permanent’ this weekend via the great Padraig Harrington, who I can forgive for anything, including chronic loss of form, collapses around holes surrounded by water, and his (admittedly kind of endearing – and probably therapeutic) tendency to over-analyse where his game is at any given time. Many years ago I would have debated for some time if asked who is the greatest sports person Ireland has ever produced. Sonia O’Sullivan, Roy Keane, Paul McGrath, Mike Gibson, all would have been on my short-list. If you go north, then George Best majestically glides into contention. O’Sullivan’s claims are very strong. I thought she was wonderful, a truly marvellous athlete, a world class ambassador too, and all the more compelling because she wore her heart on her
vest sleeve. Her career had its dramas too; falls, injuries, disappointments, heartbreaks. The lows made her many highs all the more glorious, and the nation was with her every step of the way. And yet…when Brian O’Driscoll and Padraig Harrington came along, any debate on Ireland’s greatest surely had ‘new information’ now. (I am not discounting all our GAA greats, not to mention the fact that we produce the greatest jockeys on the planet). O’Driscoll graced the rugby stage for many years, and while it was his
attacking flair that established him as a superstar, his defensive strength and sheer courage ultimately defined his great career. Even towards the end of his playing days, his body ravaged by battle, he was always brave and often brilliant, with magical, inventive interventions in games reminding that ultimately, and simply, he was a genius. So, on the ‘Ireland’s greatest sports star’ debate, I think of all our greats with pride and I single out O’Sullivan and O’Driscoll. But then I make a special place in my mind for Padraig Harrington. And I give him my vote. And yes, it is surely true that a golfer can never really thrill us like a rugby star or athlete can. As a moment in time, Harrington sinking a tournament winning putt cannot compete with the sight of O’Sullivan or Eamonn Coghlan (another favourite of mine) passing opponents on the final bend, or O’Driscoll slicing through a powerless defence through a perfect marriage of body
swerves, pace and vision. However, the scale of what Harrington achieved at his peak cannot be overlooked. He was the first Irishman to win any of golf’s four majors. He went on to win two more. For decades, we lauded great Irish golfers like Christy O’Connor (Senior and Junior), Des Smyth and Eamonn Darcy. Harrington took it all to a new level. At his peak, he walked in the company of Tiger Woods. Harrington conquered the golf world three times. Over the years, he has had many other triumphs. He does it all with a smile, and is a supreme gentleman. This weekend, in the latest major (the PGA), Harrington finished six under par, not far from the top of the leaderboard, a quietly evocative reminder of the permanence of his class. And, despite the passing years, I have a feeling there are more big moments to come in Padraig Harrington’s great career.

NewsPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION We are born of the faith of our fathers, descending from a great cloud of witnesses whose faith is attested to on every page of Scripture (see Hebrews12:1). We have been made His people, chosen for His own inheritance, as we sing in this Sunday’s Psalm. The Liturgy this week sings the praises of our fathers, recalling the defining moments in our ‘family history’. In the Epistle, we remember the calling of Abraham; in the First Reading we relive the night of the Exodus and the summons of the holy children of Israel. Our fathers, we are told, trusted in the Word of God, put their faith in His oaths, convinced that what He promised, He would do. None of them lived to see His promises made good. For it was not until Christ and His Church that Abraham’s descendants were made as countless as the stars and sands (see Galatians 3:16-17,29). It was not until His Last Supper and the Eucharist that “the sacrifice...the divine institution” of that first Passover was truly fulfilled. And we now too await the final fulfilment of what God has promised us in Christ. As Jesus tells us in this week’s Gospel, we should live with our loins girded – as the Israelites tightened their belts, cinched up their long robes and ate their Passover standing, vigilant and ready to do His will (see Exodus 12:11; 2 Kings 4:29). The Lord will come at an hour we do not expect – will knock on our door (see Revelation 3:20), inviting us to the wedding feast in the better homeland, the heavenly one that our fathers saw from afar, and which we begin to taste in each Eucharist. As they did, we can wait with “sure knowledge,” His Word like a lamp lighting our path (see Psalm 119:105). Our God is faithful and if we wait in faith, hope in His kindness and love as we have been loved, we will receive His promised blessing, be delivered from death. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory.com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon)

FRANK BRANDON’S UNIQUE TAKE ON LIFE ...
Marooned in the big city I
t’s Sunday morning of the Bank Holiday
weekend and after my usual bout of will I, won’t I, I find myself on the nine o’clock bus from Athlone heading to Croke Park in the company of my two sons, Paul and Mark. The media had been telling us all week about the road works that would be disrupting the traffic in the city centre but in fairness there didn’t seem to be any major problems and it certainly had little impact on the different forms of public transport that we used over the weekend. Anyway, we made it into the city well before eleven, left the gear in Mark’s apartment, put on my Galway jersey and cap and headed off for the big breakfast in Eddie Rockets - sometimes I think that’s the main reason I go to Dublin at all and as always it didn’t disappoint. I know they have recently opened in Athlone but eating the breakfast there wouldn’t have the same impact. Anyway, with Eddie’s done and dusted, we started off on a leisurely stroll to Croker, ticketless as of yet but on the way we met the living Galway legend that is Gerry Rushe from Mountbellew and he showed us where to go to get them. As it turned out we might have been better off if we never got them - but we didn’t know that at the time! Gerry was staying in accommodation close to the pitch and to educate some of the locals he had brought a sod of turf with him, which he strategically placed outside the front of his
Galway manager Kevin Walsh.
hotel. It was strange to see it sitting proudly on the footpath, in the middle of our capital city. On we went and we met one of Galway’s most loyal supporters, Larry Donoghue, and took our very good seats in the lower Hogan Stand well in time for the start of the KerryClare encounter. In fairness the attendance was so small we could nearly have sat anywhere we wanted. Just below us was Glinsk native, Micky Lundy, a top footballer in his own right and whose son, Michael, was one of Galway’s top performers last year but who is presently away in America.

Local politicians welcome Jazz opening Local politicians have been quick to welcome the opening of Jazz Pharmaceuticals’ new manufacturing and development facility in Monksland, Co. Roscommon. The official opening was attended by a number of local politicians with Independent TD Michael Fitzmaurice and Senator Maura Hopkins among those hailing the news as a boost to the region. Deputy Fitzmaurice said: “I attended the official opening of Jazz Pharmaceuticals in Monksland this week and the 50 jobs that they are providing over the next three years are very welcome and it is another valuable addition to the pharmaceutical hub that exists in the area. I am now calling on Enterprise Ireland and the IDA to redouble their efforts to attract more jobs to this region.” Senator Hopkins meanwhile, praised Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Mary Mitchell O’Connor. “It is very clear that Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor has a strong interest in job creation in this region having visited the constituency four times in recent weeks. Working closely with the Minister and her officials, there is a clear focus on developing further job opportunities within this area and across the constituency”. The new facility cost €50 million and is expected to provide 50 jobs in the area within the next three years. (See page 18).
SPEAKING
The most bizarre story to make the news last week was the story of the woman in Dublin who was living in an unsuitable oneroom flat with her two children aged 16 and 10 and she was offered a new two-bedroom townhouse in Cabra. She refused the offer because she wanted to get a three-bedroomed house in a different area so that she could live near her mother. Now everywhere we look we are being told of homelessness and a lack of social housing and yet it seems that people all over the country are being offered sometimes brand new houses and are turning them down for all kinds of reasons. Some houses aren’t near enough to the shops, others are too far away from other family members, some are too big or too small and it all seems totally ridiculous to me - if you need a house, and are lucky enough to get offered one then it should be compulsory that you accept it! If you refuse, you should tumble way down the waiting list, and maybe, the
next time you get an offer you just might take it. Sticking with housing, and a new survey out today has confirmed what a lot of us have thought all this time; that two thirds of tenants have difficulty getting back their deposits from landlords. It’s a few years now since my children went through third level education but I can remember the same difficulty cropping up every single time - no matter how good a state the place was in when it came to leaving, the landlord always found some reason to renege on repaying the deposit. There is a new service available now, called Deposify, which effectively is there to adjudicate on disputes between landlords and tenants and it seems a great idea to me. I don’t blame landlords because some tenants are a nightmare, and wreck their accommodation, but some tenants don’t cause any problems and now that there is a body to help both sides I think it is a good idea.
The two games were most disappointing; Clare, after their win over the Rossies last weekend, just never got going and the less said about Galway’s performance the better. What happened them is a mystery but then again when we look at their record in Croke Park since 2001 maybe it’s not so surprising. Tipperary played a fabulous brand of football that the Connacht champions couldn’t live with and I hope they do themselves justice in the semifinal in a few weeks time. The big question it posed really was; how good or bad was the Connacht Championship? As for us, we are good losers being well used to it and we went off for a few around the city pubs. If you met us later in the night you wouldn’t be able to tell whether we won or lost - come to think of it, we mightn’t have been too sure ourselves! I’ve said it before, but the once or twice a year that I socialise in Dublin makes me realise that it’s a totally different world to the one that we inhabit and I can definitely confirm that if the recession hit Dublin at all, it’s well disappeared by now. Lisa, our daughter, joined us after the game so we had a most enjoyable few hours before I headed off for a relatively early night and the rest hit Copper’s; where I know they missed my renowned dancing skills! Anyway, that’s the first of the match-ups with Tipperary over and done with; we can only hope that the same fate is not awaiting the hurlers in a couple of weeks’ time.
No more midnight ‘doughnuts’! Last Friday night I had the good idea of having an early night and was just settled into a lovely deep sleep, shortly after midnight, when I suddenly thought I was in Mondello Park; the sound of what seemed like Formula One engines nearly had me jump clean out of the bed and I just made it to the window in time to see what I think were three cars doing what I’m told are doughnuts, right outside the house. They then roared off into the night before coming back for more at about 3 am and, on the evidence of the local roads, corners and junctions they spent a busy night drawing their doughnuts all around the area. It’s a prac-
tice that seemed to have died down over the last few years, which was no harm, so if you were the one who woke me from my slumber, maybe think twice about keeping up this dangerous practice and settle for a different type of thrill.
Unfortunately it wasn’t these doughnuts which were keeping Frank awake last Friday night!
AMERICAN TEA PARTY FOR SENIOR CITIZENS Finally for this week, I’m asked to remind you all of the American Tea Party in aid of the senior citizen’s Annual Christmas Party, which will take place in Kilbegnet Hall on Friday, 12th August at 8.30 pm sharp. Music will be provided by our own local dub, Paul Browne, admission is only €10 and you are all invited to come along and have a great night’s craic. It’s all to help fund the Senior Citizen’s
Christmas party, which is one of the great parties of each and every year and a way of saying thanks to the older generation for their lifelong contribution to the parish: don’t forget August 12th, come if you can at all, and if you can’t make it a little contribution would be gratefully accepted.
‘Till next week, Bye for now

Eimear to launch her debut album Rooskey singer’s big night in Backstage Theatre ‘Say the Words’, the debut album by Rooskey native Eimear Reynolds is due for release this month and according to the songstress, it’s got something for everyone. The title track was co-written by Eimear and will join a range of traditional favourites, haunting hymns and popular, modern tracks to form what is bound to become an instant hit. ‘Black is the Colour’ and ‘Voice of an Angel’, appear side by side with songs made famous by chart sensations Ellie Goulding and Christina Perri. “They’re all songs that, over the years, I always went back to singing,” Eimear revealed. “If I connect with a song, I just enjoy it. I wouldn’t sing a song if I couldn’t find some sort of connection with it.” The album, which has been in the making since February 2015, was recorded with
Mark Cahill at Crooked Wood studios in Slane and will be officially released on Thursday, August 11th, as Eimear takes to the stage for her first ever headline concert. Though thoroughly excited to release her work, Eimear, who was classically trained and studied Music in DIT, is hoping that those who have seen her perform before will enjoy her change in direction. “It took me a couple of years to find my sound but everyone was so used to seeing me in the Church setting so when I wavered off that it took me a while to gain confidence. “I don’t consider myself one genre and that’s kind of something I’ve struggled with the past year,” she continued. “It is going to be a shock but I’m really confident about the album and I’m really excited about it.” Celtic Woman Star Chloe Agnew, the daughter of Twink
and renowned musician David Agnew, will join Eimear onstage, with the two even coming together to perform a duet. “It’s like a dream come true to me,” laughed Eimear, a long-time fan of Chloe and her work. “It’s still a bit surreal!” Eimear is also a founding member of the popular Roscommon Solstice Choir, which she credits with providing many great memories, friends and contacts, but it’s to her family she reserves the most praise. “Without them I’d be nowhere,” she said. “They’re there 100% to support me.” Eimear will launch ‘Say the Words’ with a performance at the Backstage Theatre, Longford on Thursday, August 11th. Tickets are now on sale from the Box Office at 043 3347888 or online at www. backstage.ie. The album will be on sale on the night and will also be available for download on iTunes and Spotify.

JJ Harlow’s at The Square, Roscommon town is gearing up for another busy weekend of live music with three nights of entertainment planned. On Friday night it’s the very popular ‘Open Mic Night’, so get down and show us what you’ve got! On Saturday evening Into The Blue and Martin O’Hara return to Roscom-
mon town’s prime live music venue. The band plays a mix of acoustic and country-styled blues and features keyboards, guitar and harmonica for an authentic sound. Members include Martin O’Hara on guitar and vocals, Terry Benson on keyboard and vocals and Eamonn Hatton on harmonica and vocals.
On Sunday night, Ciaran, Conor and Gary (CCG) will once again provide the music as we wind the weekend down in style. JJ Harlow’s is once again the place to be in Roscommon town this weekend so come on down, pull up a stool and choose from our wide range of craft beers while enjoying a weekend of live music.
‘Roscommon in the 1980s’ photography exhibition Roscommon Arts Centre is delighted to announce that an exhibition of photographic prints by world-renowned British photographer Martin Parr titled ‘So Near & So Far – Roscommon in the 1980s’, will be unveiled in the arts centre gallery on Thursday, 11th of August. The images selected
present a typically wry Parr-esque view of Roscommon and the wider region. Known for projects that take an intimate and satirical look at aspects of modern life, ‘so near so far’ looks at the effects of wealth and Americanisation of the West of Ireland. Martin Parr was born in Surrey, England in 1952.
When he was a boy, his budding interest in the medium of photography was encouraged by his grandfather George Parr, himself a keen amateur photographer. Martin Parr studied photography at Manchester Polytechnic, from 1970 to 1973. Since that time, Martin has worked on numerous photographic
projects. He has developed an international reputation for his innovative imagery, his oblique approach to social documentary, and his input to photographic culture within the UK and abroad. Martin Parr has published over 90 books of his own work and edited another 30. This is a wonderful op-
portunity for photography, art and history lovers to witness and appreciate an exhibition that allows the audience to peer closely into our culture. The exhibition preview takes place at 6 pm on August 11th and all are welcome to attend. The exhibition continues until 11th October.

Ballaghaderreen is once again preparing for a magical and mystical weekend as the town plays host to the 4th annual ‘Secret Village’ festival this weekend. The Secret Village is an arts, culture and music festival, described by organisers as ‘The Electric Picnic of the west’, and it will take place this Friday and Saturday in a secret location in woodlands in close proximity to Spell’s Bar. The scenic location was once used as allotments for many of the town’s residents, however nowadays the unused land transforms into a roots music extravaganza once a year. The beautiful setting brings to mind Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire and this fairytale setting

Village Festival Ballaghaderreen will play host to 40 live bands on three stages across the two days. This year’s festival promises to be “bigger and better than ever” according to the organisers with great music, arts and old trade demonstrations taking place over the two days. Last year, wood-turning and blacksmith demonstrations proved to be very popular with visitors to the festival. The event will also be popular among younger visitors with a wide variety of old-style amusements and treasure hunts as well as other traditional and educational games on offer. The amusements will once again be built on-site specifically for this weekend’s festival. With something for everyone, people of all ages are once again expected to converge on the northwest Roscommon town for the festival which will run from 4.30 pm until late tomorrow (Friday, August 5th) and 12.30 pm until late on Saturday (August 6th). For more information see ‘The Secret Village Festival’ on Facebook or contact Spell’s Bar, festival co-organisers, on 094 9860144.

I was very happy to work with this group this year assisting them in making a successful application for funding under the Community Diaspora Fund. “The festival, now is in its fourth year, has proven to be a big event in the calendar for the people of the town and surrounding areas. The weekend hosts over 30 acts and showcases some of the local talent. There are also traditional crafts and
stalls as well as workshops, storytelling and traditional West African music and dance. The organisers are committed to keeping the ticket price as low as possible to leave the festival accessible to as many folks as possible. “This festival brings a huge amount of our young people back to the area, with in the region of 1,000 people attending last year over the weekend. It also brings new people into our town, which creates spinoff to the community for the weekend. A festival like this is really unique and has received hugely positive feedback to date. The age group it taps into is very important in creating an image of our rural areas as a great place for our young people and families to enjoy a festival.”

Sr. Kathy Kettle, from Perth, was one of the many people with Irish roots who arrived on these shores to attend the commemorations of the 1916 Rising. More than 260,000 attended the main state ceremony in Dublin on Easter Sunday, and around 20 of Sr. Kathy’s family were present. They had travelled from Australia to pay respect to their ancestors – the Kettles from Artane in Dublin – who were staunch nationalists and highly educated people. Sr. Kathy arrived in Ireland four days before the commemorations and stayed with friends in Athleague, John and Moira Burns. It was only by chance that she discovered her family’s nationalist roots. “My cousin Seán was doing the family tree about ten years ago and he said: ‘Did you know that your granduncle has got a bust in St Stephen’s Green?’” Sr. Kathy said on a visit to Roscommon town. The bust is of Thomas Kettle. A man of high intellect, he was born in Artane in Dublin, and was a versatile man: an economist, journalist, barrister, writer, poet, soldier and Home Rule politician. He fought during the First World War, “fighting for the rights of small nations”, believing that assisting British forces would hasten Home Rule. He made the ultimate sacrifice, however, dying in 1916, not during the Rising, but in the Battle of the Somme. During her recent trip to Dublin for the centenary, Sr. Kathy made a visit to Glasnevin Cemetery and was delighted to hear Thomas referenced. “The tour guide spoke about him,” she said. “I went up to him later and told him that I was related. He was taken away with surprise.” Sr. Kathy, a Sister of Mercy, only discovered the depth of her family’s Irish heritage on a visit to Ireland in 2008. During that trip she discovered that Thomas had a brother, Laurence. Laurence, who lived far longer than his sibling – he died in 1960 – was also a high achiever. A founding member of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, he was held captive by the insurgents in the College of Surgeons during the Rising. Laurence and Thomas’s staunch nationalism was instilled in them by their
father, Andrew, a Parnellite politician and founder of the Land League. From speaking to Sr. Kathy, it is evident that she is of a similar mindset. “It’s unfortunate the way some things ended up: it would have been nice had Michael Collins lived and continued fighting for a united Ireland,” she said. “I think that would have been a great achievement.” In the early 1960s, her parents, Elizabeth and Michael, lived near the Falls Roads in Belfast, with their four young children – Gerard, Marie, Michael and Don. They were tense times in Belfast. In 1963, the family emigrated to Perth. “Mam and Dad were just thinking things weren’t going well,” Sr. Kathy said. “They didn’t want to have the boys, never mind the girls, involved with any sort of violence. The opportunity (to emigrate) arose and they took it.” At the time of their departure to Australia, Elizabeth, who died three years ago, was expecting Kathy. “I was conceived in Belfast and delivered in Perth,” Sr. Kathy quips. Having joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1988, Sr. Kathy has been based in the Nairobi, the poverty-striken Kenyan city, since 2002. Tenement life in Dublin one hundred years ago would be paradise compared to the conditions she works in at Mukuru Slums. Mukuru, where around 500,000 people live, is a place of absolute destitution. People’s homes are huts of corrugated sheeting; there are no toilets or running water. Sr. Kathy’s vocation is to lessen their plight. “It’s pretty awful,” Sr. Kathy said. “The population of Kenya is 14 million. Sixty-five per cent of them are living in the slums, on about €40 a month. “Out of that, you have got to feed people, pay for their rent, then send them to primary school.” Primary school is free under the country’s Constitution, but the reality is far different, Sr. Kathy said. “Because of the corruption, you have got lots of people in the school trying to make a substitution for their own salary,” she added. “You would love to be able to put a stop to the corruption.” One hundred years after the Rising, Sr. Kathy is, like her ancestors, campaigning to improve a country’s conditions – Kenya’s, not Ireland’s.

New Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé arriving soon at Michael Moore Proof of Mercedes-Benz’s determination to overtake its rivals and increase its global presence is seen in the launch of yet another new model – this time a coupé-styled version of their all-new GLC, the mid-size SUV that launched in Ireland last December. Not due here until early-September, the new GLC Coupé opens up more new ground for Mercedes-Benz, taking its place alongside the GLC – their first ever mid-range SUV in right-hand drive – whilst expanding the portfolio of models built on the C-Class platform – namely the C-Class saloon, estate, coupé and cabriolet. Following a route already taken by the GLE Coupé – introduced as a sporty edition of the new GLE, the new CLC Coupé is said by Ciaran Allen, sales manager for MercedesBenz passenger cars in Ireland, to be a ‘niche model that will appeal to those seeking an even more sporty version of the GLC itself’. From reaction received from dealers, Allen expects it to capture the interest “of those who rate style just as highly as substance.” Just a few short centimetres longer
and lower than the GLC, the new Coupé is strikingly similar to it in terms of its outer appearance, save for its sloping roofline, short rear overhang and single-louvre grille with star inset and sparkling diamond-finished backing panel. A discreetly-positioned rear under guard reflects its SUV heritage. Though price, range and specifications relating to models sold in Ireland have yet to be ‘locked and loaded’, it is likely that the new Coupe
will launch with a price tag around €60,000. The new Coupé will be manufactured by Mercedes-Benz in eight engine variants – 4 petrol and 4 diesels – all EU6 emissions standards compliant. Of these, the GLC 200d Coupe and GLC 220d Coupe will be most suited to the Irish market. In terms of specifications, models sold here will come highly equipped with a wide range of standard items consistent with the policy now being pursued by Mercedes-Benz. Included will be all of the driver and passenger comforts and high-tech gizmos owners have come to expect in this class of vehicle. In addition, safety and driver assistance systems now common across the MercedesBenz range will form part of the standard offering, supplemented by a comprehensive selection of optional items. Contact one of our dedicated Mercedes-Benz sales team at Michael Moore Car Sales on 090 640 3000 for more details.

Brigid’s to edge tight affair Who’s in Action? Roscommon Gaels v St. Brigid’s (Group A) Where and When? On Sunday in Ballyforan at 3.45pm The Story So Far: Roscommon Gaels are through to the play-off stages after wins against Clann na nGael and Castlerea. St. Brigid’s have one win (against Boyle) and one loss (against Padraig Pearses) on the board. Prospects: This is a very interesting game in prospect. Roscommon Gaels are in bonus territory now after two wins and they can have a go against St. Brigid’s to test themselves against the best without any fear. But the town side will have to
improve from their display against Castlerea. Brigid’s have got their act together after a woeful start against Pearses and a lot of their star players are back from injury. Neither side will want to lose this with an eye to later in the year. When the sides met last year in Strokestown it was a cracking game which Brigid’s won narrowly. They might just have the edge this Sunday but it will be close. Prediction: St. Brigid’s
Pearses too hot for Boyle Who’s in Action: Boyle v Pádraig Pearses (Group A) Where and When? On Sunday in Tulsk at 2 pm. The Story So Far: Boyle started with a good win against Castlerea but were brought back down to earth with a bang against St. Brigid’s in round two. Pearses started with an excellent display and win against St. Brigid’s but they were poor against Clann na nGael in the second round. Prospects: The loss of Conor and Ronan Daly is a severe one for Pearses and if Boyle can get their best team out they have a chance here. The performances of Donie Smith (who is doubtful) and
Enda Smith will be crucial to the Boyle chances. The carrot is that a win would probably be good enough for either side to progress to the play-offs. Pearses are the form side and I’ll give them a hesitant vote. Prediction: Pádraig Pearses
Yes, they Clann! Who’s in Action? Castlerea St. Kevin’s v Clann na nGael (Group A) Where and When? On Sunday in Ballyleague at 3.45 pm The Story So Far: Clann started with a narrow loss to Roscommon Gaels but they put the train back on the tack with a good win against Pearses in the second round. Castlerea are struggling as they have lost both games so far against Boyle and Roscommon Gaels. Prospects: Clann are very keen to show that last year’s success was no flash in the pan and if the likes of Fergal Lennon, Jack Connaughton, Cathal Shine, Ultan Harney and Donie Shine play to their ability there can be only one winner here. Castlerea held Roscommon Gaels until the last few minutes in the last round but a shock looks unlikely here. Prediction: Clann na nGael
Elphin’s luck to change! Who’s in Action? Michael Glavey’s v Elphin (Group B) Where and When? On Saturday in Ballinlough at 7 pm The Story So Far: Elphin need a win having lost twice - to St. Faithleach’s and Strokestown. Glavey’s lost to St. Croan’s but they bounced back to shock St. Faithleach’s in the last round. Prospects: At home Glavey’s will not be easily beaten. If Andrew Glennon hits top form they are in with a chance. But Elphin’s need is great and they don’t want to lose again and get involved in a relegation scrap. It will be a battle, but Elphin might just edge it. Prediction: Elphin
Strokestown player power to prevail Who’s in Action? St. Croan’s v Strokestown (Group B) Where and When? On Sunday in Enfield at 3.45 pm The Story So Far: St. Croan’s began their campaign with an impressive win against Glavey’s but they were well beaten by Western Gaels in round two. Strokestown have lost heavily to Western Gaels but they
won narrowly against Elphin in a highscoring second round game. Prospects: Croan’s are a hard-working outfit and they will be determined to cause an upset here. Strokestown have plenty of very good players but their potential has been unfulfilled over the past couple of years. If they turn it on they have the players to win this one. Prediction: Strokestown
Strong Gaels forecast for Frenchpark Who’s in Action? Western Gaels v St. Faithleach’s (Group B) Where and When? On Sunday in Frenchpark at 6 pm The Story So Far: Western Gaels have been impressive in their two wins so far against Strokestown and St. Croan’s. St. Faithleach’s lost to Michael Glavey’s in round two having won their first game against Elphin. Prospects: There will be a lot of county players on view here. Western Gaels have been very impressive so far and they look strong in every department. St. Faithleach’s will be looking to the Murtaghs to supply the scores but they may be in trouble in defence. Western Gaels should be good enough. Prediction: Western Gaels

This fantastic prize will be popular with ladies across the country and its anticipated that it will bring many entrants from the fashion conscious. So ladies if you fancy a trip to the Big Apple get out your Sunday best and head along to Kilbeggan this Saturday evening.
The going is expected to be soft, soft to heavy in Sligo and good in Leopardstown on Thursday. Friday at Tipperary the going is expected to be yielding, yielding to soft and good at Kilbeggan on Saturday perfect for jump racing. With only the entries to peruse the one horse that catches the eye is Tony Martin’s Jeremy’s Jet who disappointed on the level in Galway last week but could go in the first if he runs. His only danger looks to be Gordon Elliott’s Tajseer who is due a bracket with a run of 3 seconds. Nulife, in the bumper, for the inform Denis Hogan yard finished 4th behind Dan Mcgrue in Lenebane on Tuesday and could collect if he turns out again.
Lenebane Review The layers fell foul of a massive gamble in Roscommon on Tuesday as Limerick trainer Charles Byrnes and jockey Davy Russell gained some compensation for the big losses in Galway last week on Sea Light and Crystal Pearl. On Tuesday they combined to land a treble in Lenebane when the three horses were all backed at fancy morning prices singly and in combinations. In the third race War Anthem, 6’s from 16’s in the morning, won the Paul Byron Shoes Maiden Hurdle
by 3 ¾ l. Then in the next race John F Hanley Handicap Hurdle Mr Smith, 12’s to 7/4, tanked up by 4¼l, two singles and a double up. Finally in the Class Grass Handicap Hurdle Top Of The Town, 12’s to 5/4, came home 5l’s clear of the field to complete the treble, 3 singles and 3 doubles. The treble at morning prices paid nearly 3000/1, lovely pickings. We’ve paid out well into six figures between the three of them,” said Paul Binfield of Paddy Powers. A figure of €5m was being bandied about as the possible return across the board. Elsewhere on the card racing opened with the first 3-Y-O hurdle of the season where Martin Brassil produced Auld Brig, steered by son Conor, to win by 2¼l and a neck from Trespassed and Mizen Master. The second went to the fav Hallmark trained by Joseph O’Brien for JP McManus who skated in by 3¼l and the same from Pateen and Aretesone. The 5th went to the Liam Cusack trained Lasoscar by 7l and 6l Graney Town and Drive The Bus. In the closing bumper oncourse bookmakers got some relief as 20/1 outsider Dan Mcgrue, proved very dangerous for the punters, touching off the fav Grind It Out and Mac Cennetig. Onto the next meeting in Lenebane on 15th August is Family Evening featur-
Bryan Cooper and Tiger Roll part company between the final two fences
ing the Most Stylish Hat Competition and The Donnellan & Co sponsored Best Dressed Man Competition.
General News Bryan Cooper is out for at least a month following his horrific fall between the last two fences in the dip off Tiger Roll last week and his crash into the final fence. Winner alright! With all the excitement of Galway I missed that Corrina Har-
low was the winner of the Dundrum Town Centre and Wineport Lodge Best Dressed Lady competition at Kilbeggan’s meeting on the 15th July. Well done Corrina, who hails from The Square in Roscommon town. Galway Races Review The opening beginners chase on Thursday provided another shock for punters with 66/1 outsider Scamall Dubh trained by Mouse Morris holding on to beat the renewed effort of the fav Marinero by neck with Don’t Tell No One a further head away. The punter’s choice went down again with Bryan Cooper parting company with Tiger Roll at the penultimate jump. Davy Russell and Don’t Tell No one were left in front but were caught and passed by Xsquared who was completing a 5 timer for Pat Fahy. Racing on the level started with a handicap over 1m and produced another double figure priced winner as J Larkin’s Total Demolition beat Marshall Jennings and Dream Walker at 10/1. In the Listed Corrib Stakes Andrew Slattery continued his good run with Planchart winning from the fav Rayisa and Ibergman. In the Novice Hurdle
Ruby Walsh replaced the injured Bryan Cooper on Bel Sas which ended up fav. and beat the gambled on local hope Champagne Harmony and Exactoris was back in third. In the feature, the Galway Hurdle Ruby Walsh, laid a ghost to rest winning it for the first time at the age of 37. The Willie Mullins inmate Clondaw Warrior, a Royal Ascot winner, carried Ruby to victory over the fast finishing Hidden Cyclone trained by John “Shark” Hanlon with Princely Conn in third for Tom Mullins and ridden by top lady rider Rachel Blackmore. The 9-Y-O gelding, backed into favourite at the death, won by ½l and ¾l. Ironically Clondaw Warrior was bought of the Shark’s yard in 2013. Tara Dylan won the penultimate at 7/1 for Tom Mullins and the bumper provided one of the biggest shocks of the week as John Neilan’s Kilcolgan trained
Poorman’s Hill, left punters there, won at 50/1. On Friday Tony Martin, following up last year’s win in the race, and Donagh Myler got punters off to a perfect when winning the opener on the 3/1 fav Heartbreak City. The 6-Y-O gelding won by from Automated and Mighty Concorde. Lost In Silence had the punters roaring as he won the 2-Y-O 7f race. On Fiddlers Green kept up the favourites record in the Blazers Chase winning from local hope Aranhill Chief. Tony Martin’s Gold Spear made up for the disappointment in The Hurdle collecting the €59,000 first prize in the feature Guinness Handicap. Ivan Grozny made it 5 favourites on the trot skating in by 16l in the Guinness 1m 6f race. Local rider Leigh Roche had his festival winner aboard M D O’Callaghan’s Intrepid Prince, a well supported 7/1 shot. The finale went to another fav, Aidan O’Brien’s Triplicate.
On Saturday 4 of the 7 favourites collected with the feature race, the Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle, going to the 3/1 fav. Westerner Lady for W P Mullins and ridden by Ruby Walsh. On Sunday, the final day, the featured EBF Stallion Farms Handicap Brian Ellison’s Baraweez winner for the last two years could only finish 5th but the stable made 3 in a row as Dream Walker under Chris Hayes prevailed at 7/1. In the opener Camlann ran for the third time in the week and made it lucky winning from Afatcat and Dollar and A Dream. Plate 2nd Alelchi Inois won the At The Races Chase and Devils Bride, 4th in the Plate added the Lord Hempill Memorial Chase making it a double for Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh. This left DKW needing 2 wins and a 2nd from the last 3 races and while Tarazani did win the first of these and First Figaro was 2nd in the closing bumper Mounira

disappointed in the fillies maiden. Dermot Weld dethroned as the King of Galway Festival’s after 18 years, a title last held by Aidan O’Brien in 1997 until Willie Mullins eventually took the title this year with 9 winners. Ruby
Walsh retained the top jump jockey title with seven winners and Pat Smullen regained the top flat rider with six winners. The points system has been used in the trainer’s competition and nearly gave it to DKW who was still alive with 2 races
to go trailing by 3 winners. It is definitely now time to reassess the scoring format and use minor placings decide only in the event of a tie. That’s all folks from the Ballybrit Festival 2016 and onto more ordinary fare in September and October.

Dan’s SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER
Tipp and Clare a breath of fresh air! THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner Long gone are the days when the exhausted but victorious hero of the county team would lean against the dressing-room door and give a colourful account of what was said at halftime by his irate manager. Something along the lines of “He absolutely ate the sh*** out of us!” has been replaced with a far more sterile and family-friendly assessment. In the modern era players are protected from the evils of the media and the outside world as they battle their way through provincial championships, back-door qualifiers and All-Ireland tussles. Media and alcohol bans go hand in hand with a county player’s summertime existence it would seem.
Not so in counties Clare and Tipperary however, as representatives from The Banner spoke freely to the media over the past few weeks and the Tipp lads were allowed to get a little ‘Tippsy’ after their impressive win over Galway. I’ve long believed that the increased professionalism within the GAA has taken away some of the magic surrounding our beloved games. It has also taken away the authenticity and replaced it with Premier League style analysis and media trained sound bites. All in all, the summer championships have become a little too clean-cut and bland. Where are the stories of dressingroom ‘disagreements’ or social nights involving ‘naked pool’? Now it seems that most county managers prefer their stars to be in bed by 10 pm after a protein shake. This has taken away part of the GAA’s identity in my opinion.

This weekend in the sporting world Olympics opening ceremony Tipp of the cap! Tipperary’s footballers performed brilliantly last weekend to dump Connacht champions Galway out of the All-Ireland Quarter-Finals.
These guys are supposed to be local heroes who farm, teach or bank when they’re not representing their county. They should be allowed to
give their take on the intercounty experience and enjoy a couple of social pints during extended periods between games. Tipperary and Clare may
have been blow-ins to the latter stages of the All-Ireland Championship, but the fresh air has blown in with them and lifted an otherwise stale summer.

There were plenty of winners in Athlone last week with John McDermott taking the Pro Golf Open and Ned Broughall clinching the Dubarry Open for men while Rhona Fitzgerald and Mary Hynes took the ladies’ equivalent. In Roscommon, Peter Geraghty took Francis Ferguson’s Captain’s Prize with a score of 137 ahead of Ian Gannon with 139. The ladies’ 18-hole competition was won by Mary Pender with 35 points with Margaret Egan in second place on 34. N. O’Grady won the senior ladies with M. O’Connor in second place. Up in Strokestown, Seán Collins won this year’s Captain’s Prize ahead of Declan Coyle and Tommy Reilly. Paul Taylor took the
seniors’ prize ahead of Paddy Murray and Bernie Taylor claimed victory in the ladies’ competition. Lady Captain, Brid Connellan, also presented her prizes to Rose Lally who won the ladies’ competition and her husband, Pat Connellan,
who won the men’s. Finally for this week we go to Castlerea where Paraic Casey beat Lorcan Cribbin and Tony O’Keefe to the Captain’s Prize. Dara Bruen took the gross while Celia Mulligan was the best of the ladies.

Good news story of the week Shiven Rovers Football Club of the Roscommon & District Football League were celebrating yet another win this week. This time, however, the club received an award for their work off the field of play as they were presented with an Aviva ‘Club of the Year’ award in the facilities category at the recent FAI awards at the Minella House Hotel in Clonmel. The award caps a successful season for the east Galway club following their senior side’s Division 1 success this past season. Things are certainly looking up in Shiven!

Handball
Egan too hot to handle Michael Egan did the double over his doubles partner Cathal O’Connor when he won the 60x30 County Minor title in St. Coman’s last Sunday afternoon. Having beaten Cathal in a thrilling 40x20 match earlier in the year Michael was expected to win this, as his style is very much ‘big alley’ oriented and Cathal had taken time off handball in order to complete his Leaving Cert. The standard was not as high as would normally be expected by these two as Michael led from start to finish and other than the start of the second game the result was never really in doubt, Michael winning 21-10, 21-13. He plays the Connacht semi-final against Mayo’s Patrick Murphy this weekend.

No Royal pardon for plucky youngsters All-Ireland Ladies Minor ‘B’ Football Final MEATH
4-9
ROSCOMMON
3-1
< SEAMUS DUKE
A first half blitz - during which they scored four goals and five points to Roscommon’s one goal - saw Meath storm to the All-Ireland ‘B’ title at St. Loman’s Mullingar on Saturday last. A brave second half display that saw Roscommon outscore their opponents by 2-1 to 0-4 was not sufficient and Meath had done enough in that impressive first half display. On a perfect pitch and in front of a very healthy crowd, Roscommon never got going in the first half and they paid the price. Meath on the other hand were very impressive. They played some lovely attacking football and with full-forward Marion Farrelly on fire, they took the game to Roscommon from the opening whistle. As early as the 2nd minute Roisin Commins was footblocked in the large square. Courtney Mulhall made a great save from Marion Farrelly’s penalty although the Meath forward put the rebound over the crossbar. Emma White followed that
up with a point two minutes later and in the 10th minute the Royals got their first goal. Aoibhin Cleary made a strong run and Kelsey Nesbit supplied a smart finish, low and hard. But Roscommon were back in the game in the 16th minute. Caoimhe Lennon (Roscommon’s best player) shot for a point but the flight of the ball deceived the Meath goalkeeper and it flew into the net, and now Roscommon were only two points behind. But that’s as good as it got for Roscommon as Meath took over completely. Megan Thynne grabbed a second Meath goal in the 21st minute (another shot for a point that went in) and less than a minute later Marion Farrelly was in again for a third goal, and her second of the game. Further Meath points from Marion Farrelly (2, 1 free) and Megan Thynne extended their lead further. In the 6th minute of first half injury-time Meath struck again and Marion Farrell completed her hat trick when she easily got through an overworked Roscommon defence. Half
-time score Meath 4-5 Roscommon 1-0. All credit to Roscommon in the second half as they dug in and played much better. In the first minute Niamh Shanagher was fouled by the Meath goalie Laurie McClean (who got a yellow card) and sub Heather Payne converted the resultant penalty. But Meath kept the scoreboard ticking over and points from Aoibhin Cleary and Emma White (free) kept them comfortably ahead. Rachel Brady popped up to score Roscommon’s only point of the day in the 49th minute and two minutes later Roscommon got their third goal when Caoimhe Lennon was again fouled in the large square and Heather Payne tucked away the spot-kick for another Roscommon goal but this was to be their last score of the game. Time was running out for Roscommon and Meath finished with points from Megan Thynne and Marion Farrelly. It was a good second half display from Roscommon but Meath were just too strong and they deserved their win. Best for a gallant Roscommon were Rachel Brady, Caoimhe Lennon, Sinead Farrell, Niamh Shanagher and sub Heather Payne but they had

O’Brien: “This bunch will win All-Irelands!” A very disappointed Roscommon team manager Grace O’Brien acknowledged after the game that Roscommon never got going. “It’s very disappointing and I feel for the girls. We just didn’t perform today and in fairness to Meath we had no answer to them in the first half. We gave it everything in the second half but it wasn’t enough. Meath got a run on us
and once the few goals went in we had a mountain to climb after that. But I am so proud of the way we fought back in the second half. On another day it would have been a different result but Meath were just too strong today. We have a very talented bunch of young players here in Roscommon and they will win All-Irelands in the future I’m sure of that,” she concluded.

Seamus Duke ON SPORT Tipp top performance restores faith in the game When I was looking at the Clare v Kerry game on Sunday I was despairing at what the game of Gaelic football has become. It was surely the most boring All-Ireland quarter-final that has ever been played. You could clearly hear the shouts of the players on the field as the small crowd sat there looking at their watches, willing the final whistle to sound as Kerry went through the motions. It was dreadful stuff. But less than two hours later my faith in our great game was restored by Tipperary who put on the finest display of attacking football that we have seen in the championship for many years. I know that the result against Galway doesn’t reflect too well on Roscommon, but it was a breath
of fresh air watching the likes of Peter Acheson, Bill Maher, George Hannigan, Michael Quinlivan and Conor Sweeney in action. Anyone who saw the game will know that Tipperary could easily have scored at least three more goals. It was incredible to report that Tipp brought about 200 supporters to the game against Derry in Cavan a couple of weeks ago and in Croke Park last Sunday they had hardly any more than 1,500 supporters. Hurling rules the roost in Tipp that’s for sure. I hope that they have more support for the All-Ireland semifinal. They have a team that is well worth going to see. They may not win the All-Ireland title but when 2016 is over that Tipperary display is one that will be remembered
County players in elite club I am all for doing everything possible to make the plight of our county players easier and the deal struck between the GAA and the GPA last week was welcome, but for 95% of players in the GAA, who are the club players, not one thing was done. The fixture list for club players is an afterthought and is geared around what’s happening with the county team. We hear many top GAA officials from the President down making speech after speech about the wonderful association we have when it almost totally ignores the plight of the club player. The GAA last year had a chance to do a couple of things like the abolition of replays in championship games and the moving of the AllIreland finals two weeks forward to facilitate club players but they did not do it. There is no doubt that the GAA is a great organisation but it is only the elite that are benefitting. There is little heed passed on club players.
From the Internet Five time Balon d’Or winner Lionel Messi has been proclaimed the best ever footballer by Pope Francis. Barcelona and Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer Messi has constantly been compared to past greats Pele and Diego Maradona, while going head-to-head with Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo. But Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church and a renowned San Lorenzo supporter, threw his support behind countryman Messi. Messi endured a difficult Copa America Centenario, stunning the world when he announced his retirement from national team duty after Argentina lost to Chile on penalties in the final. The 29-year-old, though, finally returned to the pitch as Barcelona kicked off their La Liga preparations with a 3-1 win over Celtic in the International Champions Cup on Saturday In Dublin. He will be happy with the endorsement of his famous fellow countryman! (the42.ie)
for many years to come. That’s how Gaelic football should be played. Fit, athletic players playing with no fear, letting the ball do the work, leaving forwards in close to the goal where they can do damage. It was a pleasure to watch it. In fact that was the kind of football that Roscommon were playing in the league against Cork and Kerry and Donegal and Down before we changed our style of play. So where do the weekend games leave Roscommon? It’s hard to say actually because every championship game is different but it does not reflect well on the Connacht Championship. We in the media (myself included), were all praise for the Galway full-back line and midfield after they won the Connacht
Tipperary produced one of the performances of the year to beat Galway and reach the AllIreland SFC Semi-Finals last Sunday.
final. They were torn apart by Tipperary last Sunday and remember that Roscommon were beaten by 11 points by Galway in the Connacht final replay. Well done to Liam Kerins who has done a great job with this Tipperary team. Remember too that they have at least four top class players who are either in the USA or Australia. One wonders if those lads were available what Tipp might be capable of. The more this cham-
pionship goes on the more it looks like Mayo were caught on a bad day against Galway and despite their shortcomings are still by far the best team in Connacht. Mayo stuttered once again against Westmeath and they will have nowhere to hide against Tyrone but I wouldn’t write them off. Similarly Donegal were shaky enough against Cork but again they will give Dublin a searching test this weekend.
Rory’s year hasn’t made the cut So Jimmy Walker won the PGA championship after another tight finish last weekend and in 2016 we have had four brand new
major champions. But nothing for Rory McIlroy, who has had a very bad year. It is hard to feel sorry for him too. He made some

outlandish statements over the past year and he dug a few big holes for himself that he could not get out of. He pulled out of the Olympics and then he said he wouldn’t even watch the golf on the TV saying he would watch other ‘proper Olympic sports’. He said that he could win a major every year until he was 45. Not this year Rory. Then he arrived at Baltusrol last week saying that the course suited him down to the ground and that he was confident he would win. He missed the cut. There is no doubt that he is a fantastic talent but he has a lot to learn.
Olympic Games have lost lustre They used to say that the Olympic Games was the greatest sporting show on the planet but I have to say that I am finding it hard to get excited about these games which are starting in Rio on Friday. The widespread cheating that has gone on at the top in several sports around the world and especially in athletics has sullied the name of the Olympics and it’s a pity. When you are watching you don’t know if the people winning medals are on drugs or not and that’s very sad for the ones who are clean.
Return to club action
Katie Taylor will have her eye on a gold medal during the Rio Olympics.
From an Irish point of view I will certainly watch the boxing and we have a great chance in a number of weights and of course Katie Taylor will be the favourite to bring home gold again. After all the codol-
ogy that went on with regard to the golf I would love to see Padraig Harrington win a medal. For an outside chance, how about Dan Martin and Nicholas Roche to win a medal in the cycling?
Last weekend’s games were proof, if any is needed, that the GAA are going to have to take a look at the championship format. This year it has produced a very lop-sided draw. Last weekend there were little more that 25,000 people at the first two quarter-finals while this Saturday the place will be packed to the rafters for Tyrone v Mayo and Dublin v Donegal. Surely the powers that be can even out the draw a bit better.
The club football championship will take over here in the county over the next few weekends and it will be interesting to see who emerges as the favourites in the IFC and SFC. The games are previewed in detail elsewhere this week but there should be plenty of controversy, thrills and spills as the various groups get sorted out. I hope that we see a high standard to football. I am a supporter of the present format and it has led to many close games since it was introduced and hopefully that will be the case this year too.
CHAMPIONSHIP Crystal Ball… All-Ireland SFC Quarter-Finals Mayo v Tyrone on Saturday in Croke Park at 4 pm What a double bill this will be at Croker. Tyrone have to be favourites to advance after a superb championship so far and they are the one team who could upset the Dubs’ applecart. Mayo have been stuttering their way through the qualifiers but they are where they wanted to be at the start of the year. I give them a great chance here but they will have to play better than they have so far. Tyrone are relentless and they have some marvellous players and they might just shade it. Prediction: Tyrone
Dublin v Donegal in Croke Park on Saturday at 6 pm Dublin will be hot favourites but don’t write off Donegal. They might not be the force that they were but they will relish a shot at the Dubs and we will all remember what they are capable of doing defensively over the years. But the Dubs look an awesome outfit with a bench that can swing the game their way. It would be a shock if they don’t prevail after a searching test. Prediction: Dublin
All Ireland SHC Semi-Final Kilkenny v Waterford on Sunday in Croke Park at 3.30 pm Waterford will bring a huge following to headquarters in the hope that they might cause an upset and their magnificent U-21 players will certainly give them a boost after a brilliant win in the Munster final. But it’s just another day at the office for Brian Cody and Kilkenny and they will wear The Déise down and power into another final. Prediction: Kilkenny

Meath finish strongly to end hurlers’ hopes All-Ireland Minor Hurling ‘B’ Quarter-Final MEATH ROSCOMMON Roscommon made a great start to this quarter-final in Navan on Saturday last but they had no answer in the second half as Meath stormed to victory in the last 20 minutes.
2-25 3-9 Meath were the better side in the opening exchanges and they led by 0-4 to 0-1 but once Daniel Glynn scored a goal after some good work from Michael Joe Egan in the
7th minute, Roscommon were back in the game. Michael Joe Egan scored a second Roscommon goal shortly afterwards but Meath were not down for long and Ethan Devine struck for their first goal to leave them 1-8 to 2-2 ahead. Meath led by 1-11 to 2-4 at half-time. There was drama at the
start of the second half. Daniel Glynn scored two frees for Roscommon and then the Padraig Pearses marksman blazed a penalty wide with Roscommon just two points behind in the 35th minute. The sides shared a point apiece after that and a Connall Kennelly point saw the margin down to just a point
with 40 minutes gone. But it was Meath who kicked on after that. Brian Dowling grabbed a second goal for the Royals and they scored six points in a row after that to open up a ten-point lead 2-18 to 2-8 with ten minutes left to play. With seven minutes to play Michael Joe Egan
grabbed his second goal of the game but at that stage it was of consolation value only for Roscommon as Meath finished with a flourish out-scoring Roscommon by 0-6 to 0-1. It was a brave effort from Roscommon but Meath’s scoring power was the deciding factor in the end. Roscommon: C Miley;
O Lyons, K Feehily, P Halpin; O Kelly, E Coyle, S Downey; D Gately, C Kennelly (0-1); J Murray, M Feeley, B Mulry (0-1); MJ Egan (2-0), J Donoghue, D Glynn (1-7). Subs: A Carty for Feehily, B Fallon for Gately, D Staunton for Donoghue, C Tarmey for Kelly, S Clogher for Mulry.

Group A
Oran v Tulsk on Saturday in Rockfield at 7 pm Definitely the game of the weekend in the IFC. Oran were so impressive in round one against Kilmore but they were brought down to earth with a bang against St. Dominic’s. Tulsk were the pre-championship favourites but they were well beaten by Fuerty. This is a toss up between two good teams and the result will depend on the strength of the teams on the night. I’m taking the easy option here. Prediction: A draw
Kilbride v St Dominic’s on Saturday in Kilbride at 5.30 pm Kilbride are desperate for a win having lost their opening two games. Dominic’s had a dramatic win against Oran and come into the game boosted by that great win. Kilbride will be depending on Conor Devaney but Dominic’s look too strong overall. Prediction: St. Dominic’s Kilmore v Fuerty on Saturday in Kilmore at 7.15 pm Fuerty have been very impressive in their two games so far but they will be tested against a Kilmore team who are very hard to beat at home regardless of the opposition. There won’t be a lot in it either way but Kilmore might just

Group B St. Aidan’s v St. Michael’s on Saturday in Castlerea at 7 pm Aidan’s scored their first championship win in a couple of years when they beat St. Barry’s in round two and while they have faded in the past few
seasons, they should be too strong for a Michael’s side who could be heading for a relegation scrap. Prediction: St. Aidan’s Éire Óg v Shannon Gaels on Sunday in Enfield at 2 pm Éire Óg have plenty of firepower up front and that could be decisive. They are unbeaten with a win and a draw so far and they face a Shannon Gaels side finding their feet in the intermediate championship, having lost to Clann na nGael and beaten St. Michael’s. Éire Óg should win this clash. Prediction: Éire Óg Clann na nGael v St. Barry’s on Sunday in Ballyleague at 2 pm Barry’s are struggling this year and Clann are always very competitive at this level and they should be good enough to record their second win of the competition. Prediction: Clann na nGael.
The focus returns to club action this weekend as Senior and Intermediate Football Championships resume.

Hyde Park – A work in progress! < SEAMUS DUKE
Work is proceeding well in Hyde Park with all systems go for the laying of the new pitch in September. Works to clear the pitch have been completed and the next phase will be the implementation of new drainage works. When this is complete the various sub levels will be put in place and finally within the next month the new pitch should be rolled out and allowed to bed in and settle. The development is expected to cost in excess of €650,000 and it is expected that the new pitch will be laid in September and that it should be ready for play by early in 2017. Roscommon senior footballers are on course to play their first Allianz National Football League home game in Dr Hyde Park in February 2017.
Work on Dr. Hyde Park has begun as a new pitch is laid ahead of Allianz National Football League fixtures in February of next year.
