A large crowd, which included Minister for the Environment Denis Naughten and local TDs Eugene Murphy and Michael Fitzmaurice, was in attendance on Monday night in St. Ciaran’s Hall in Castlecoote for a public meeting to discuss possible wind farm development in the area. The meeting was organised by local councillors Orla Leyden and Ivan Connaughton in response to a recent Coillte advertisement seeking “interested parties for sustainable commercial development” on its lands in the area. Cllr. Connaughton claimed that local farmers have already been approached. Cllrs. Connaughton and Leyden urged local farmers to stick with the community and resist offers. Minister Denis Naughten confirmed that he had made his views known to Coillte while intimating that no new subsidies were currently available for wind energy projects.
