Cessation of Turf Cutting Compensation Scheme

What’s your idea of the perfect night in? I’m always on the go so it would be nice to stay at home with the family! Watching a movie with my daughter Arlene and son Evan and hopefully get to bed a little earlier than normal!

In recent years the Government announced the end of turf cutting on 53 raised bogs designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). The Government later extended the Scheme to include land owners and turbary right holders affected by the restriction on turf cutting on 36 raised bog Natural Heritage Areas (NHAs) The Government subsequently announced an annuity payment scheme for turf cutters in sites where continued turf-cutting is no longer possible for reasons of environmental protection. Qualifying turf cutters may be compensated by way of a once off payment of €500 in the first year of the scheme together with an annual payment of €1,500 (index linked) over 15 years. To qualify for this scheme relevant turf cutters must demonstrate: 1. A legal interest in the site in question, e.g. site ownership, as at 25th May 2010. 2. That you have been cutting turf on the site during the five year period up to 25th May 2010. 3. That no turf cutting or associated activity is ongoing on the property or has occurred since 2011. 4. The turbary on the site must not be exhausted. Alternatively, where feasible, qualifying turf cutters will be facilitated in relocating to alternative non-designated sites to continue cutting turf. The qualifying criteria for relocation will be similar to that of the annuity payment scheme. Qualifying turf-cutters who opt to relocate to an undesignated bog will receive a once off payment of €500 and will be entitled to receive either a payment of €1500 or a delivery of 15 tonnes of turf for each year until their relocation bog is ready to commence turf-cutting. Such an arrangement is designed to facilitate families where more than one household in the same family has sourced its turf from a single bog plot.

I inherited a bog from my uncle in recent years. My uncle and I had cut turf there for many years. I understand that this particular bog is now designated as a Special Area of Conservation and I am forbidden from cutting turf there. Is there any compensation or alternative scheme available to me? Please advise.

And ideal night out? I like to go out for a meal with my husband Jay and then meet up with friends afterwards.

I don’t get much time to sit down and watch TV or Netflix series but I do love documentaries and political programmes.

What would be your ideal weekend away in Ireland? I love going to Dublin. I love the whole ambience and the shopping!

What do you do to relax? To relax I like to go for aromatherapy or reflexology sessions.

What about a holiday abroad? It would have to be a cruise. My husband Jay and I are going on a Mediterranean Cruise to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary this year so I’m looking forward to that.

What is your favourite place in Co. Roscommon? I am biased but I have to say it’s my home, the picturesque village of Ballintubber. It’s my pride and joy and it will be representing County Roscommon in this year’s Pride of Place – that speaks for itself!

What’s the best movie/Netflix/TV series you’ve seen recently?

‘€3m €3m NEEDED’ for Hyde upgrade  DAN DOONER

Roscommon GAA County Chairman, Seamus Sweeney, has said that it will cost “in excess” of €3 million to bring Dr. Hyde Park up to the required standard following a recent statement from the Connacht Council which stated that the venue would not be eligible to host future finals unless a number of works have been completed. In a statement released to the Roscommon People yesterday (Wednesday),

Mr. Sweeney said a National Infrastructure Committee review carried out in 2016 had concluded that substantial funding was required to upgrade the Roscommon town venue. “Roscommon GAA fully accepts the need for massive improvements at Dr. Hyde Park. The GAA National Infrastructure Committee conducted an audit on county grounds and with regard to Dr. Hyde Park, it will take in excess of €3 million to bring it up to the required standard.

British Irish Parliamentary Assembly to meet in Sligo The British Irish Parliamentary Assembly (BIPA) will meet in the Sligo Park Hotel next Monday and Tuesday (11th and 12th) for its 56th plenary. The session will feature addresses by Joe McHugh, Minister of State at the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the Children’s Ombudsmen from Ireland and Northern Ireland. The British Ambassador to Ireland, H.E. Robin Barnett will also address the Assembly. Speaking ahead of the plenary, Irish Co-Chair Seán Crowe TD said: “As 2018 is the one hundredth anniversary of partial suffrage, this 56th plenary will see BIPA members discuss and acknowledge the very real challenges facing women in parliament. We also plan to discuss the historical perspective of the suffrage movement particularly against the backdrop of ongoing claims of sexual harassment, unequal representation and pay. “Peace and stability can never be taken for granted and BIPA plays an important role in providing a forum for our parliaments to meet and engage directly with one another. The Assembly acknowledges the major political challenges, like

‘We will require full support of the whole county’ – Sweeney

“We now have the finest playing surface in the region and obviously it follows that we require first class facilities to host games. “The Roscommon GAA family on its own is not in a position to finance this, therefore we will require the full support of the whole county to achieve it. “€3 million is a massive amount of money and it will require everyone in Co. Roscommon to get on board to ensure that Dr. Hyde Park can once again be a venue we are all proud of”.

Brexit, facing our collective jurisdictions. We are all keen to see the political institutions restored in the North and we will use the opportunity this plenary presents to further build and maintain good relationships between our parliaments and its elected representatives”. Co-chair Andrew Rosindell commented: “It is now 20 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement that established the British-Irish Parliamentary Assembly in its current form to facilitate on-going

dialogue between parliaments in Ireland, the UK, devolved nations and Crown Dependencies. “I look forward to reflecting on what has been achieved in these past two decades and how we can continue to work together to secure prosperity in Northern Ireland. We also look forward to investigating some of the broader issues related to Brexit, including the impact on children and at a local level, as well as commemorating the votes for women campaign and role of women in parliaments today”.

There has been a mixed political reaction to an update from the HSE on the future of the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea. Writing to Minister Jim Daly on the 30th of May, HSE Chief Officer Tony Canavan said that no decision will be taken in relation to the Rosalie Unit until a Clinical Assessment process which is currently ongoing is completed and then reviewed. Minister Denis Naughten has welcomed the HSE update and says it will provide reassurance for residents and their families. In contrast, Fine Gael Senator Maura Hopkins said Mr. Canavan’s letter to Minister Daly

on 2 May last, the Clinical Assessment process currently underway by the HSE is expected to be completed shortly. ‘Following this, the HSE will revert to you on the outcome of this process. ‘It was also made clear at the meeting that the engagement between the HSE and local stakeholders should be maximised in the meantime, and that no decision has been, or will be taken, in relation to the Rosalie Unit until these assessments have been completed and reviewed. ‘I can confirm that it is the intention that the Rosalie facility will continue to form part of the service delivery of healthcare in the Roscommon area, and that if any change should arise from its

current use, it will be done in consultation with public representatives and relevant stakeholders for the area’. Minister Naughten welcomed the announcement but said that stakeholders and local public representatives must continue working with residents and their families. “I welcome this reassurance from the HSE following my letter to Minister Daly, however this is an issue which should never have been open for discussion in the first place. This will provide reassurance for residents and their families, however we must continue to work with residents, their families and their advocates as well as the local community to plan for the future,” he concluded.

does not provide any clarity or reassurance. And Fianna Fail TD Eugene Murphy said that while he is prepared to give the statement a cautious welcome, he does not see it as a long-term commitment to the Rosalie Unit. Minister Naughten had written to Minister Jim Daly stating that “both Government and HSE policy is clear that the Rosalie Unit has a future which is in all likelihood within the Mental Health services” and had sought reassurances in relation to both the residents of the Rosalie Unit and the future of the unit itself. In subsequent correspondence to Minister Daly, Mr. Canavan wrote: ‘As agreed at the meeting held

Deputy Eugene Murphy

Senator Maura Hopkins said she needed to see practical steps being taken and evidence that the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea will remain open and be enhanced. She said that HSE Chief Officer Tony Canavan’s letter to Minister Jim Daly does not provide clarity or assurances. “In my discussions over the past number of months with Minister Daly, Minister Harris, An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and HSE management, my concerns and questions still very much exist. This letter does not provide clarity or reassurances. My questions are: when will the Rosalie Unit be open to new admissions? When the clinical assessments are complete, what is the HSE planning to do with this information and how will it impact on the Rosalie Unit? “We have been given no practical plan for the development of services at the Rosalie

Unit to support current residents and those people in the future who will need these services. “I need to see practical steps being taken to provide evidence that these services will remain and be enhanced,” she said. Deputy Eugene Murphy said: “I would give this a cautious welcome as I believe there is still no long-term commitment to the Rosalie Unit. “I would still have serious concerns about the long-term future of the centre and I would still be fearful that the HSE plan to push ahead and try to close the Rosalie Unit. “Minister Daly must do everything in his power not to allow the HSE to make these changes. We need commitments that will be adhered to. These elderly and vulnerable residents deserve better. The Rosalie Unit is their home”.

Senator Maura Hopkins

Minister Ring opens Ash Park in Kilteevan The Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, officially opened Ash Park, a community park and playground, in Kilteevan last Friday evening. The Minister’s Department provided funding of €50,000 through the CLÁR programme for the project. In total, Roscommon has received €780,000 in funding through CLÁR over the past two years. Minister Ring said: “I am delighted to be here in Kilteevan today to open this fantastic community park and playground. The facility is sure to be a valuable resource that serves both the local community and many of the thousands of visitors that come to this area each year. “I am delighted to have been able to provide financial support of €50,000 under the 2017 CLÁR programme for this wonderful community facility.

CLÁR is a key part of the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development. “I want to congratulate all those who have been involved in developing this Community Park. It is an excellent example of what can be done when stakeholders work together; it also shows the strong community spirit and pride which is alive and well here in Kilteevan. “This is an exciting time for rural Ireland, with the announcement this week of the Government’s new €1 billion Rural Regeneration and Development Fund which will be administered by my Department. The various schemes which are already run through my Department, such as CLÁR, the Town & Village Renewal Scheme, and the Outdoor Rural Recreation Scheme, are helping to create a bright future for all of rural Ireland and its Pictured at the official opening of Ash Park, Kilteevan were Michaela, Dympna and Emma Hanley. STRIKE planned in Council flexi-leave row  DAN DOONER

Fórsa trade union members in Roscommon County Council are set to mount a one-day strike on Thursday, 21st of June over what they perceive to be council management’s “refusal to halt its effective ban on flexi-leave” in the County Council. The proposed action will impact on all council services. This is the latest development in a long-running dispute over flexi-leave, which allows workers to build up extra leave days

by working up hours over a period of time. The union has also threatened one-day strikes each Tuesday and Thursday after June 21st and it has said that action will escalate “if management moves to victimise or discipline staff for taking part in industrial action”. Fórsa claims it’s now 12 months since any Roscommon council worker was approved for flexi-leave and that some form of flexible working arrangement is in place in every other local authority in Ireland.

Union official Padraig Mulligan said there had been two binding Labour Court recommendations on the issue. “We have attended seven Workplace Relations Commission hearings. We really have explored every avenue to avoid industrial action,” he said. Over the past year, the matter has been brought before the Workplace Relations Commission at the Labour Court and recommendations have been issued. Mr. Mulligan accused

council management of attacking working parents. “No other local authority in Ireland has attacked working parents – and particularly working mothers – in this way. It is unprecedented within the public service, and it hits lowerpaid women hardest as many of them depend on the flexi scheme to balance work and caring responsibilities,” he said. Roscommon County Council officials were contacted for comment but none was forthcoming at the time of going to press.

Hear, Here! I

n 2015 John Ryan and Dave Gleeson established Blackberry Hearing in Two Mile House, a small village outside Naas in Kildare.

The two were curious about the high cost of hearing aids and hearing solutions. They were also curious that, despite amazing and advancing hearing aid technology, many people had less than positive views about hearing aids. Despite what appeared to be the obvious advantages to wearing modern hearing aids for those with hearing loss, many where reluctant to try them out. With long and diverse business careers behind them, Dave and John started to research why this was so. After all, anyone who now had a problem with eyesight bought glasses or had laser surgery.

Their research into this question led them to start Blackberry Hearing and they focussed on building the company without borrowing any practices from the existing industry for the following reasons. Customers found hearing aids to be expensive, indicative of aging and thought that hearing aidsmay not be as successful as they would like them to be. Dave and John established the following

Sure how could you not have the Connacht Final in the Hyde? Good news then; great news in fact. Not only will Kevin and the team be at the Hyde on June 17th, the other Kevin and his team will be there too. Of course we always expected that the Hyde would get this game; mind you, the Connacht Council has fairly laid down the law, so to speak (see details on page 48). The Council has basically said: ‘You can have your party this time, but there will be no more parties until you attend to all those housekeeping issues that we’ve been going on about!” As we go to press, the alarming word from County Board Chairperson Seamus Sweeney is that the housekeeping issues could carry a €3m price tag. If the Roscommon business community could be assumed to have, metaphorically speaking, poured itself a symbolic ‘stiff drink’ to celebrate getting this year’s final, then that will have been coughed up pretty abruptly on hearing that €3m figure. I will leave the politics/finances of this issue for now – this week, we’ll leave the future to the future and just welcome the fact that there was a successful outcome to the frenetic behind-the-scenes manoeuvring of recent weeks. We won’t be alone on June 17th, there will be no embarrassing build-up, the uncertainty is over…it’s Roscommon v a mean and mighty Galway, it’s game on! It’s going to be a great occasion for the

county town, for the people of Roscommon, for the GAA. The Hyde on Connacht Final day, indeed the town on Connacht Final day, is truly special. On these days, anticipation and nervous excitement intertwine to create a very special atmosphere. For Roscommon fans, the Hyde will always be the perfect Connacht Final venue. It’s our home, our would-be fortress, our familiar theatre of dreams.

to it as ‘the decade of despair’; a barren, chastening era for Roscommon footballers. In 1989, we almost escaped that unwelcome epitaph for that unforgiving decade. Losing in the dying seconds of that year’s Connacht Final replay at the Hyde, Roscommon flirted with glory when Tony McManus calmly converted a penalty; the stadium erupted, Mayo heads collapsed into Mayo hands. The premature celebrations of

Ten days and counting – down. A new script to be written. Two Kevins, two teams, one prize

I first lived my Hyde dreams through the heroes of the late 1970s. I was drawn to the Hyde in those days by childhood wonder and the rock ‘n’ roll swagger of the Roscommon team of that era. Eight or nine of us were bundled into a small car in Rooskey on one Connacht Final morning, and off the driver sped, devouring road with zeal. We waved our crepe hats and visualised what wonders we might witness in an hour or two. As kids, we became used to witnessing Roscommon victories – there was that Connacht four-ina-row from 1977 to ’80 (which I may have mentioned before). It turns out we were being spoilt. When I was sports reporting in the 1980s in the now sadly defunct Champion, I routinely referred

delirious Roscommon fans were part-shared on the pitch; fatally, some Roscommon players lost concentration. Mayo launched a desperate attack, time threatened to stand still and then a Michael Fitzmaurice free levelled for Mayo. Extra-time, hearts in mouths, anguish that we hadn’t sealed the deal. Next, seesaw exchanges before Jimmy Bourke scrambled home one of the ugliest goals of all time, the ball almost apologetically crossing the line. Mayo won. A sickener! In 1990, our Connacht title winning famine finally ended, Martin McDermott the calm manager of what will always be a fondly-remembered team. They retained the title too, in ’91. Gerry Lohan’s last-minute goal in 2001 won the

title for Roscommon (against Mayo), a sensational late drama which now has a special place in folklore. In 2010, we were just back in Rosslare after a holiday in France when we tuned into the tense closing minutes of the Roscommon/ Sligo final. Fergal O’Donnell’s Roscommon were outsiders that day. It was agony listening to those final minutes as we disembarked, agony followed by joy. Missing that one in the flesh was tough, but of course we’d had a great holiday! Hyde Park on Connacht Final day is about the football, it’s all about the football, but there’s other stuff too. There’s the sheer adrenalin rush you feel all morning, meeting familiar faces as you pick up a Sunday paper, everyone tuned into the same wavelength today. There’s the flags and the banners, the sheds painted in your county’s colours, the bunting at schools. All week, there’s the largely pointless but priceless pub debates on what might unfold. There’s the media interest. On match morning, there’s the growing buzz in town, the ‘early comers’ at the Hyde, the cones in place, the building momentum, the day’s mystery soon to be revealed. Then, the cars and buses, and the faithful are arriving. Ten days and counting – down. A new script to be written. Two Kevins, two teams, one prize. Sure how could you not have the Connacht Final in the Hyde?

NewsPeople Naughten confirms childcare investment Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr. Katherine Zappone announced a total national allocation of €6.87 million in Capital funding for providers of Early Years and School Age Childcare this summer. Confirming an allocation of €145,797 for County Roscommon, Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Denis Naughten said there was a need for continued investment in the childcare through Budget 2019. “There was an unprecedented amount of applications this year for the scheme from providers across the country and here in Roscommon which clearly shows there is a real need in our communities for increased investment in the childcare sector. “While those providers who were not successful in this round of applications will be disappointed, the allocation of funding to 13 is welcome. More childcare places, better outdoor play areas and important repair works can be delivered at these premises for the benefit of the communities and families that they serve. “Myself and Minister Zappone will continue to press at the Cabinet table for increased investment in childcare through the Budget 2019 process so providers can provide the highest quality of childcare for families in Roscommon,” he said.

Feighan and Hopkins welcome funding Senators Frank Feighan and Maura Hopkins have welcomed capital funding for childcare providers in Roscommon. Senator Feighan said the funding would help to develop facilities in the area. “I am delighted that that this funding has been allocated which will allow vital childcare places to be created in Roscommon. This funding will contribute towards natural outdoor play areas and the essential maintenance and repair of services nationwide. “This capital funding has been awarded following the completion of a very competitive application and appraisal process. Pobal will now begin the process of notifying all applicants of these decisions”. Senator Hopkins, meanwhile, described the announcement as “very positive” and said that the funding would “ensure that our children receive the best possible early years education”.

Irene Cafferky, Manager of Roscommon CCC

Irene Cafferky, Manager of Roscommon CCC says she is “delighted” with the announcement on Friday June 1st by the Minister for Childcare and Youth Affairs, Dr. Katherine Zappone that more than €6.87 million in capital funding has been allocated through the DCYA which will create over 2,000 new childcare places across the country.

Ten childcare providers in Roscommon received a total of €140,797, 2% of the overall funding. 86% of the funding allocated to services in our county went to community childcare providers and 14% went to private childcare providers. Irene said: “This investment by the state and commitment to early

years will greatly assist childcare providers in County Roscommon to expand on their service and provide additional childcare places. “It will also allow existing services to improve their buildings and develop outdoor play areas”. The Board, Manager and staff of Roscommon CCC would like to congratulate the following childcare

services on their successful applications (see table). Manager Irene Cafferky acknowledges that over the summer services will need to work on the drawdown of their allocation to ensure the deadline requirements are met and assure providers that our staff team will support them to meet deadlines if required.

Youth with disabilities to benefit from €634k funding Minister Denis Naughten has confirmed that significant funding to support young people with disabilities in Roscommon has been allocated by the Government. Under the Government’s Ability Programme, €633,919 has been allocated to Roscommon Leader Partnership for services preparing young people with disabilities for the job market. Mentoring, further education and training are part of the services offered designed to help bring young people with disabilities aged between 15 to 29 years old, who are not work-ready, closer to the labour market. The programme also helps employers to ensure they are equipped appropriately to recruit and retain people with disabilities within their workforce. In Roscommon, the Ability Programme is delivered by Roscommon Leader Partnership with Brothers of Charity Ros-

common, GRETB Adult Guidance and Information Service and HSE West. “This level of Govern-

ment funding is significant and it will ensure practical and effective supports for young people

with disabilities in Roscommon as they enter the job market. The mentoring, training and advice

offered is an important element in preparing for employment,” said Minister Naughten.

Red Hot Tips for Quitting Smoking Roscommon County Council is looking for your best tips/stories on how to quit smoking. In return we will be offering some amazing healthy life style prizes to the five top tips chosen after the closing date of 21stJune 2018. Maybe you have quit yourself or helped a family member find a way to quit – we want to share your good ideas. By doing so, you are in with a chance of winning one of the latest Fitbit Fitness Watches, a pampering spa day, 6 month gym membership, gardening voucher or a Family Activity Day out in one of Roscommon’s leading Activity Centres. Roscommon County Council recently hosted a very successful seminar on encouraging girls to stay physically active. Psychologist, David Coleman, gave tips to parents, mentors and coaches on encouraging girls to stay in sport or continue with physical activity. He highlighted the importance of getting out and active with your children rather than just telling children to go out and play. This initiative is part of the overall Healthy Ireland programme to address issues impacting on health such as smoking, weight management and lack of adequate physical activity. Worldwide, tobacco use causes nearly 6 million deaths per year and this will rise to almost 8 million by 2030. And even more worrying, smokers die on average ten years younger than non smokers. As a first step, No Smoking signs are being installed in all of the Council operated playgrounds to discourage smoking in areas where children are playing. There is also an opportunity for community playgrounds to avail of similar signs. Research from the HSE, shows that smoking is incredibly harmful to your health, causing a wide range of debilitating and fatal conditions. The introduction of tobacco free playgrounds will

How to avoid ‘first-time buyer’ rookie mistakes  MIRIAM KERINS

Just because you can afford to repay a mortgage doesn’t necessarily mean you can afford to own and run a home. Now, stay with us here while we explain. Each year AA Ireland Home Insurance very helpfully analyse expenses regarding the ownership and the maintenance of running a home. Their latest figures, released at the end of last year, found that it ‘costs about €16,000 per year to run a house’. We tend to forget those little extras that come with having a roof over our heads; for example, as well as paying your mortgage, you’re gonna need a slush fund for maintaining and repairing your home. For example, the likes of a broken boiler, a washing machine that refuses to spin, a burglar alarm that needs servicing; add to that the ESB bills, the cost of heating oil/fuel, building and content insurance, ‘phone and broadband services, satellite TV costs, refuge collections, garden/outdoor costs like repairing a patio, painting fences and gates and of course the property tax, etc., can all add up. Buying your first home is possibly the biggest and most expensive decision you’re ever likely to make, however, while chatting to some first-time buyers, (my youngest daughter included), I’ve realised many people appear to be both overwhelmed and poorly prepared for this step, and sadly that can mean making some easily avoidable mistakes. With that in mind, we’ve put together a few pointers that we hope will prove helpful. Preparation is key There’s a lot of competition out there; use it to your advantage and approach an independent financial broker for advice. I’ve advised my daughter to shop around before she accepts a mortgage. She’s in a strong negotiating position, she’s got an excellent credit profile, she’s holding all of the cards at the moment, (and so are you); so it’d be unwise to accept the first offer

you get. Remember, your bank may not be offering you the most suitable financial package specific to your needs, so take it handy and don’t be rushed into any deal you may regret at a later date. Location, location, location What are your main criteria when it comes to neighbourhood/community? Are you planning a family? If so, what are the schools like? Is there local public transport nearby, what about shops and other essential services? And, most importantly, how safe is it, as in what’s the crime rate like? Temptation Don’t get lured in by the more expensive ‘ready to hang your coat’ house that looks prettier than the home that needs a slap of paint; but that you can comfortably afford. It’s easy to add on that bit extra to your long-term loan but keep in mind the

long-term charges associated with that ‘few extra thousand’. Who knows, things may not always be as rosy as they are now; besides, you’ll need the extra few quid to book that holiday or pay your car tax and insurance. Survey Never, ever be tempted to forgo the cost of hiring a surveyor whose professionally trained eye will spot possible structural damage that could end up costing you a fortune. Use his/her report to strengthen your negotiating position on the asking price. Get everything in writing I cannot stress this strongly enough, especially if you’ve got your eye on that antique bureau or that fabulous dining room table that you think (but haven’t confirmed) are included in the overall price. Leave no room for ambiguity.

Summer HOMEandGARDEN

First impressions are so important, so make the most of your outdoor space  MIRIAM KERINS

Having an outdoor space is a wonderful addition to any home; and such a space should be utilised as often as possible. And, if you’ve got kids or pets who like to run and play in a safe environment,

or if you like to plant some fruit, veg or colourful flowers, trees and shrubs to admire after a hard day’s graft while sinking into a sun lounger, glass of vino in hand as you watch the world go by, and listen to the evening bird song, then there’s no better place to

do it than in the luxury and privacy of your own garden. And so, as summer is upon us, we thought we’d offer readers some helpful tips regarding how best to make the most of their treasured outdoor space. Now lads, despite what we tell ya…size does mat-

ter. Steady now, we’re referring to the garden here; so don’t panic. You see, we believe that good things come in small packages, (right ladies); with one of the advantages of having a small garden being that it’s low maintenance and often only requires a few per-

The gates closed on Bord Bia’s 12th annual Bloom festival in the Phoenix Park, Dublin last Monday, but not before organisers announced the details of this year’s award winners which included a Nursery Gold Medal for John Doorly from Irish Water Plants, Strokestown, Co. Following two days of adjudication, a total of 113 awards were presented to show garden and postcard garden designers, plant nurseries, and floral artists from across the island of Ireland. The judging panels for Bloom 2018 comprised of 14 Irish and international horticultural experts, who announced a raft of 113 awards for show garden designers, nurseries, floral artists and amateur garden designers including 35 Gold, 22 Silver Gilt, 19 Silver, 24 Bronze and 13 certificates of commendation.

sense of aesthetic flair and shape that showcases your garden off to its full potential to prospective buyers. Now a word of caution… if you’re one of those weekend DIY warriors, step away from the paving slabs now and hire a professional for this particular job; otherwise you may have issues with drainage. If you’re the mother-earth type and have a large garden, then why not make it work for you by going organic and growing your own. However, make sure to grow fruit and veg that are best suited to our Irish weather. For example, I’ve been told perennials such as asparagus and rhubarb do well; even in cold Roscommon winters, but do seek the advice of your local garden centre staff who’ll be delighted to enlighten you further.

POLITICAL PEOPLE

The ups and downs of politics! Senator Maura Hopkins and Minister Michael Ring pictured at the official opening of Ash Park, Kilteevan. Picture: Andrew Fox

Rosalie and reassurance: Someone order a pinch of salt!  PAUL HEALY

Minister Denis Naughten says the HSE has provided reassurances over the future of the Rosalie Unit in Castlerea. Deputy Eugene Murphy is giving him and the HSE the benefit of the doubt. Senator Maura Hopkins says she’s far from convinced, and I’m inclined to share her scepticism. I’ve read enough HSE (and political) statements over the years to advise that the correspondence sent by the HSE to Minister Jim Daly should only be consumed if there’s a significant dose of salt on stand-by. It’s classic ‘commit to nothing’ stuff and in my opinion it by no means offers reassurance to Rosalie residents and their families. The HSE’s Tony Canavan begins by informing Minister Daly that a Clinical Assessment process which is currently underway is expected to be completed shortly. He adds that engagement between the HSE and local stakeholders should be

maximised in the meantime. The above statement offers no reassurance to anyone. Mr. Canavan goes on to say that no decision will be taken in relation to the Rosalie Unit until ongoing assessments have been completed and reviewed. That part of the statement should also be read with the pinch of salt nearby. Mr. Canavan does say that it is intended that the

Rosalie facility will continue to form part of the service delivery of healthcare in the Roscommon area – but he does not rule out change, adding: “if any change should arise from its current use, it will be done in consultation with public representatives and relevant stakeholders for the area”. I’ve read a lot of HSE (and political) statements over the years – I fear that

this correspondence from Mr. Canavan provides no grounds for optimism about the future of the Rosalie Unit. Hopefully my assessment about the HSE’s assessment is wrong! Having made this rather negative assessment, I will add that political will could yet save the facility. In this matter we have the usual ‘which comes first, HSE or Government?’

codology, with the public led on a merry dance. Sure, the HSE runs the health service, but surely the minister of the day and his or her Department has the real power? There is an onus on Minister Naughten and Senators Hopkins and Frank Feighan, and opposition politicians of course, to continue to fight the good fight for the future of this facility.

Leyden: ‘Tour app puts Roscommon on the map’ A new interactive heritage tour app, which was commissioned by Roscommon Town Team and produced by Mimar Media, was launched recently at the Roscommon Arts Centre. The app provides the user with a self-guided Interactive Heritage Tour of Roscommon town. Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr. Orla Leyden described the app as a “highly valuable tool for tourism promotion” and said it put Roscommon on the Interactive Map along with other walking tour experiences in places like Amsterdam, Siena, Bath and San Francisco. “This self-guided Interactive Heritage Tour brings us on a journey Anne Marie Beirne, Business Development Manager, Bank of Ireland, Larry Brennan and Sheila Lenehan, Community Enterprise Leader, Bank of Ireland Sligo, Leitrim & Roscommon pictured at the Roscommon Arts Centre recently for the launch of the Roscommon Town Interactive Heritage Tour. through time in Roscommon heritage town. Through striking footage it brings 10 places of heritage interest to life, featuring interviews with locals and historians that passionately recount the various heritage aspects and stories of our County Town. “Well designed signage at the ten locations direct locals and visitors alike to access the interactive tour using a mobile device through a QR code app as they enjoy this 5 km walk which will take the average heritage explorer 2 hours to complete. “I would like to thank all of the contributors who are the stars of the show for their time and for sharing their knowledge and interest in our

rich heritage. The presenters were informed, articulate and engaging throughout. “The production team can take a bow for developing accessible and engaging material that leaves the visitor ready to explore Roscommon Town’s incredible heritage and to learn more – it portrays a sense of place and gets to the very heart of our town”. Cllr. Leyden went on to praise those involved in producing the app including Mimar Media, Roscommon Town Team, Roscommon Tidy Towns, Roscommon County Council FD Design, Roscommon Heritage groups and all those who acted as presenters.

EPA’s climate figures a call to action – IFA IFA Environment Chairman Thomas Cooney has again restated IFA’s call on the Government to introduce a robust climate activation programme to curb greenhouse gas emissions in Ireland, particularly the increases from the transport sector. “The EPA’s figures published recently represent a real call to action. While emissions from agriculture are expected to increase by 3-4% between now and 2020, transport will go up by 17-18%. “Action is now required, which parks the confrontation that often clouds the climate discussion. Government must come forward with a climate activation programme, focused on the following areas:

1: A biomass development programme would eliminate peat and coal burning, which is responsible for 64% of greenhouse gasses from the electricity sector. 2: The re-opening of the Green Low Carbon AgriEnvironment Scheme. 3: A zero-carbon electricity tariff for community based renewable projects. This would displace gas consumption, which accounts for 35% of emissions from the electricity sector. This is part of IFA’s recent call for a €100m prosumer strategy, which ring-fences 20% of the PSO levy paid by homeowners to encourage homeowners and farm families to replace their fossil fuels with renewables sources, such as

roof-top solar and micro energy. 4: The scaling up of onfarm emission reduction programmes identified in the National Mitigation Plan, such as Smart Farming, Origin Green and the Carbon Navigator. 5: A full review by the

Department of Agriculture’s Forest Services division of the new forestry programme and a commitment to remove barriers, as planting is down 14% year on year”. Concluding, Thomas Cooney said: “Farmers have a proven track record

of producing the most sustainable and emission efficient food in Europe and will continue playing an important role to play in addressing the international climate challenge. With the support of the right Government policies, we can do more”.

Wyvern Lingo set for Boyle Arts Festival Music group Wyvern Lingo have been confirmed for the Boyle Arts Festival on Sunday, July 22nd at 10 pm in The Storehouse. Wyvern Lingo is Caoimhe Barry (vocals and drums), Karen Cowley (vocals, synth and bass) and Saoirse Duane (vocals and guitar). Three girls with young hearts but witchy old souls who perform sensual, beat-driven R&B flavoured pop and have their own private language – the wyvern lingo! Originally bonding over albums by Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel, then starting their own thread of music, which stitches together a rough but resilient tapestry of influences,

taking in folk, hip-hop, rock and R’N’B, all united by the spectral chill triggered by their unique vocal harmonies. Of their debut album ‘Wyvern Lingo’, released in February, they said: “We were trying to find a title that would capture a glimpse into our world. W3hat better way than to self-title the album! This is us. “These songs are a collection of experiences, both separate and shared. Experiences that shape how we view the world, and how we’ve come to terms with the way our lives have unfolded”. Tickets are now available on www.eventbrite. ie. For more information, please visit our website www.boylearts.com.

Legend of Luke Kelly at Roscommon Arts Centre Join Dublin singer/songwriter Chris Kavanagh in celebrating the memory and music of a true Irish musical legend in Roscommon Arts Centre on Thursday, June 21st at 8 pm. A popular performer at the arts centre over the last few years, Chris makes a welcome return to the stage as he sings the songs of legendary performer Luke Kelly. Chris was raised on Irish music and

has been singing Irish folk songs since he was three years old and his performances capture the depth and passion of the great man he was so heavily influenced by. Over the past sixteen years he has amazed audiences at home and abroad and sold out many prominent Irish venues such as Vicar Street and The Cork Opera House with the regular attendance of Luke Kelly’s family.

Chris released his own album of original material ‘Voice of The People’ in 2011 and shortly afterwards performed with The Dubliners for two weeks on their German tour. Chris will be joined on stage on the night by musicians Hilary Kavanagh, Joe Finn and Michael Howard. Tickets available now from Roscommon Arts Centre on 090-6625824/ www.roscommonartscentre.ie.

Award-winning visual artist at arts centre The recipient of the 2018 Roscommon Visual Artists Forum Award, Siobhan O’Connor, will launch her exhibition ‘Structural Process and Possibility’ on Saturday, June 9th at Roscommon Arts Centre. Castlerea-born artist Siobhan’s work explores architectonic construction and buildings or structures that are constantly been built, changed or shifted creating our landscape today. The exhibition will feature scultpural structures created using modern building materials such as concrete, metal and wood. Through these sculptural works, the material properties of these often unyielding materials will be pushed, reconfigured, resignified. Process and materiality play a central role

in O’Connor’s work where she is interested in the potentiality of building from simple lines, basic colours and simplified shapes. Her work considers how structures holds up one another; tension and suspension weight and balance. Her drawings are presented as almost procedural blue prints that can be executed and further used as a plan for works that don’t necessarily exist. This exhibition consists of a concrete and metal structure and a series of drawings. The structure is made of handmade concrete blocks, some of which are dyed a black and striking blue. Exhibition opens on Saturday, June 9th at 3.30 pm and runs until June 30st. All are welcome to attend the launch. Local students join Queen Medb’s Army! Schoolchildren from eight national schools took part in workshops with Heritage in School Scheme expert Chris Thompson to prepare them to join Queen Medb’s army as part of the annual Táin March, which recreates the epic Táin Bó Cúailnge or Cattle Raid of Cooley. The school workshops are supported by the Creative Ireland Programme, which places creativity at the centre of public policy. (Further information from creative.ireland.ie and ireland.ie) The event is part of the celebration of 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage – ‘Our Heritage: Where the Past meets the Future’. “What better way to make a connection between the past, present and future than with schoolchildren learning about their heritage and having great fun in the process” said Nollaig Feeney, Heritage Officer, Roscommon County Council. Participating schools included: Tulsk NS, Clooniquinn NS, Castleplunkett NS, Clooncagh NS, Ballinagare NS, Cloontuskert NS, Ballagh NS and St. Brdget’s NS, Fourmilehouse who were unable to attend on the day.

No disclosure, no truth and no transparency leads to treachery Carlsberg don’t do conniving, deceiving, scheming, murky scandals…but if they did, Ireland might be their biggest seller! Neither, BTW, does Carlsberg do nicely, nicely, softly, softly ‘revelations’.…but if they did, Children’s Minister Katherine Zappone would win the prize for her use of sanitised, flattening and understated language when describing the historical adoption impropriety relating to 126 babies (most likely only the tip of the iceberg) in Ireland as being “incorrect registrations”. I was personally impressed by the look of utter shock displayed on Ms. Zappone’s face during her press communiqué, appearing as if this disclosure was all a shocking and surprising piece of news to her. Perhaps Carlsberg should do best actress gongs and award her one! Now readers, I’ve got great respect for Minister Zappone, but at the centre of this scandal are 126 (at least) human beings and their families, and, as my mouth is not a bakery, so I don’t ever sugar-coat, nor do I put jam on anything, unlike the Minister, I’m gonna tell it like it is! The State hawked, trafficked, stole and sold

babies; babies who are human beings and Irish citizens and collaborated in illegal adoptions; something which is a criminal act. In addition, does anyone else feel this ‘revelation’, coming hot on the heels of the massive Yes vote, has a kind of cruel irony to it? Of course this is not a ‘revelation’ at all; not to me, and not to countless others. You see, a close family member was illegally adopted, something which I discovered accidentally when I was just 17 and I was carrying out painstaking research (in the days before the World Wide Web), and I began exploring my family’s origins. You see, I was sure I was adopted myself. I’m not, but due to feeling totally out of sync with my family, okay, with my own mother, during my analysis, I made a disturbing discovery. Anyhow, this is not entirely my story to tell, but it does involve me, and I will be pushing and pursuing this outrageous, immoral and unethical act until I receive full disclosure because, due to my family member’s illegal adoption all those years ago, news of which I had to break to them, (bear in mind I was

Minister Katherine Zappone

only 17), like everyone, I have a right to know who I am and where I come from. Of course there was a father involved in all of these tragic cases. These unfortunate women whose babies were stolen were not all bestowed the virtues of a miraculous immaculate conception. There are men, cowardly deserters

handed get-out-of-jail-free cards who abandoned, shunned and neglected these pregnant women; who washed their hands of them, forsaking them to the fate of criminal baby snatchers, who sold their infants to the highest bidder through a thriving network across a black market adoption ring, i.e. the Catholic Church and the State!

We are never, ever, ever…getting back together! She may be a 10-time Grammy award winning performer but Taylor Swift certainly won’t win any prizes for her geographical skills, or should I say, lack thereof! In advance of the warbler’s June 15th Croke Park gig, Katy Perry’s nemesis, @taylowswift13: posted via Instagram, ‘I missed you UK! We’ll be back to see you SO soon on the Reputation Stadium Tour at Etihad Stadium in Manchester (June 8 and 9), Croke Park in Dublin (June 15 and 16), and Wembley Stadium in London (June 22 and 23)!’ Ooookaaayy…deep breath…we are NOT British! Now, here’s a brief history lesson for you Taylor. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin. Let me clarify that I mean no disrespect to my lovely British pals, my British readers or my darling hubby; but, for centuries, the British threw their weight around trying to build an empire. One of the countries they targeted was Ireland. Why? Well, probably because everyone loves the Irish and maybe those fierce, fighting chaps just wanted a little piece of that luurrrvee action; maybe

they just needed a big hug. However, they soon realised that oppressing us, starving us and murdering us, was not the way forward; especially as we fought back with everything we had. However, despite the fact there once was ‘bad blood’ (see wha’ I did there Taylor?), we’re all friends now, and we love our neighbours, those jolly, terribly polite bad-ass Brits.

But, just in case my little lesson has gone completely over that cute blonde mane of yours Tay-Tay, let me put it in the words of your own songs…We, (the Irish), ‘got smarter’. We ‘got harder in the nick of time,’ and we kicked ass and rebelled. So, while ‘the world moves on, another day, another drama, drama,’ when it comes to our relationship with the UK…how can I put it? Oh yeah…‘We, are never, ever, ever…getting back together!’ Yes, we forgave the British, we’re good like that; and we love them. Sure it’s all water under the bridge now isn’t it. But, for future reference Tay-Tay, if you, or anyone else ever decides to make that massive cock-up again, and think it’s okay to lump us, (a different country, a different nation, with our own unique language and identity), in with being part of the UK, let me assure you that ‘I’ve got a list of names and your’s is in red… underlined! Geddit love? Enjoy your visit to our Emerald Isle; I’m sure your Reputation Stadium Tour will be amazing.

WeekendPeople SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION In today’s Gospel Jesus has just been healing and casting out demons in Galilee. Along with the crowds, who flock to Him so that He can’t even take a break to eat, come people who do not understand what He is doing. Even His friends think He has lost His mind and needs to be taken away for a while. But the scribes who came down from Jerusalem are not just honestly mistaken; they accuse Him of being possessed by the prince of demons. The reality is just the opposite. Jesus is revealing Himself as the one promised in our First Reading. He is the seed of the woman who has come to crush the head of the demonic serpent. In the parable of the strong man, Jesus reveals that He has come not just to punish the devil but to free those bound by him. As St. Bede explains: “The Lord has also bound the strong man, that is, the devil: which means, He has restrained him from seducing the elect, and entering into his house, the world; He has spoiled his house, and His goods, that is men, because He has snatched them from the snares of the devil, and has united them to His Church”. The scribes blaspheme by attributing this work of the Holy Spirit to demons. Jesus adds a statement that shocks us at first: “whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness”. That does not mean that there are any limits to the mercy of God (CCC 1864). Rather, the only sin that cannot be forgiven is the deliberate refusal to accept the mercy offered through the Holy Spirit. Instead, we must imitate those who sat at Jesus’ feet. For, as He said, “Whoever does the will of God is my brother, and sister, and mother”. – Scott Hahn Ph.D., www.salvationhistory. com (and courtesy of Sacred Heart Church)

FRANK BRANDON A day with the ‘horsey set’ – and reflections on that phantom goal FRANK BRANDON’S

It’s the Bank Holiday Monday, and I’m up with the lark (well maybe a slightly lazy lark), feeling fit as a fiddle (maybe a slightly rusty one), after a Sunday night spent at home (not a pint to be seen), watching the Sunday Game, and like the rest of the country, enjoying some extraordinary hurling drama, drama that I will get to a bit later on in the piece. Anyway, on Monday the big question was “where would we go?” There was a festival on in Loughglynn, the big fair day and loads of other attractions in Athleague, the final day of the Bloom Festival was on in Dublin, all attractive places to spend a few relaxing hours, but in the end we didn’t go to any of them – instead we hit for Mullingar, where a big international showjumping competition was taking place. Now I knew there had been qualifiers for several different classes taking place all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but nothing could, or would, have prepared us for the sheer size of the whole event. The first thing we saw was literally hundreds of horse lorries, horseboxes pulled by jeeps, vans, cars and SUVs, and there were people (old and young) everywhere, and as for ponies and horses…there had to be thousands of them there. Our girl, Tara, who had a very successful show, had arranged to meet us, but we didn’t realise there were four big outdoor sand arenas, all hosting different competitions, along with warm-

unique take on life ...

Waterford manager, Derek McGrath

up areas, bars, fast food outlets, ice cream sellers, horse clothing stalls and hurdy gurdy stalls all over the massive area. It took a few minutes and a few phone calls before we finally met up. Anyway she was involved in a competition in which 176 horses had taken part over the three days, so as that was only one of several different competitions, it will give you an idea of how many horses and riders had come to Mullingar. So she headed off to do her stuff and we pottered round the place. There was a major international show taking place on the Main Arena, with prize-money of €25,000, so the attendance there was huge, but we rambled from arena to arena and had great fun watching all the classes from ponies with children as young as four

years old to fellas as long in the tooth as myself. I have to say it was a great day’s entertainment. The Mullingar Equestrian Centre is just out of this world, and worth a visit if you get the chance. The organisation, from parking to looking after very busy toilets, to even picking up the rubbish, was first class, and before I finish I have to say that we had the nicest burgers we ever tasted from the Arena’s food area. In total, there was €100,000 on offer, and with the prize-money so big, needless to say the riders and horses came from all over the country and further afield too. In our short enough visit we met people from Tyrone, Waterford, Donegal and Tipperary. Now I am the first to admit that I am

not a horsey person, but I did enjoy the day out. If Mullingar was anything to go by, the horse industry seems to be in fairly good health, even to my uneducated eye. Anyway, back to the hurling drama, and as we watched one of the jumping competitions we got talking to a young couple with three children, who were seated beside us. They were from Bernaderg, Padraig Joyce country, and it transpired that the man, Paul, was the son of Oliver King, a great Galway man who had been a guard in Creggs and who had introduced a lot of us to the game of hurling way back in the 1980s. It also happened that Oliver was the umpire at the Tipp/Waterford match, the one who didn’t flag (lucky for him) the controversial goal, so he’s blameless, but in this day and age, with so much riding on the result of these big games, it was one of the most outrageous umpiring and refereeing errors of all time. The Waterford manager, Derek McGrath, was amazingly forgiving about it all, but surely goal-line technology has to be brought into most if not all of the major hurling grounds. Thankfully when Oliver lined out for Creggs in the junior hurling championship our backline was so watertight that no ball ever got near the goal, and as a result we never needed any major umpiring decisions. Come to think of it, we never had any umpires so controversy never arose.

Like Karius, I had concussion…

Locally owned ... in the heart of the community Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius

Talking of goals, and errors, way back in the 1980s I let in one of the softest goals of all time in the County Final against Ballinameen. What happened? I let a long-range kick bounce off the ground, and thinking it was going wide, I made no effort to stop it. Of course it ended up in the back of the net. It was something similar to what the Liverpool goalie (Karius) did in the recent Champions League final (although he at least tried to save their third goal), but now it seems that, according to doctors in the U.S., he was suffering from concussion after a clash with Sergio Ramos (who else?). For a long time the goal that I conceded has been heavy on my mind, but I finally know what happened, and I am now declaring that I too was concussed on that fateful day (as I certainly had a headache the following morning). Like Karius, I am not to blame for that unfortunate concession.

And finally… Finally for this week, don’t forget the Barrie Harris funds are being distributed this Saturday night in Mikeen’s in Creggs. There will be music, refreshments and craic, and all are welcome. It will kick off about 9.30 pm, so we’ll see you there.

Till next week, Bye for now!

Naughten welcomes appointment of design teams at local colleges Minister Denis Naughten welcomed appointment of design teams to Athlone Institute of Technology and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. The design teams of architects and engineers have been tasked with bringing the projects through the initial design and planning process. “It’s really important for the development of the region and future generations that Athlone Institute of Technology and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology will develop new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) facilities which will include science labs, lecture theatres, classrooms and other STEM related projects. These state-ofthe-art projects will lead to a step change in STEM-related skills, including ICT, engineering and life sciences across the region. These new facilities will be transformative for the institutions and students,” stated the Minister. According to the Minister’s Department, the PPP programme will be paid for through monthly unitary charge payments to the private operator who will not only construct these projects but maintain them for 25 years post-construction. The Public Private Partnerships (PPP) Programme is being rolled-out alongside €367 million in funding from the Department of Education and Skills for investment in higher education over the period 2018-2021. Project Ireland 2040 provides for a significant ramping up in Exchequer funding to support infrastructure priorities in the higher education sector. €2.2 billion will be made available over the coming decade to support refurbishment, new buildings and equipment renewal in the sector.

Kerrane slams Government over homelessness Sinn Féin spokesperson for Roscommon Claire Kerrane has criticised the government for presiding over a deepening homeless crisis as the April homeless figures show an increase in the number of homeless children. Ms. Kerrane said: “The Department of Housing’s official homeless figures for April show a marginal 0.2% decrease in the overall homeless figures. However, the number of homeless children was

up 43 on the previous month to 3,689. In fact under this Fine Gael government child homelessness has increased by a shocking 74%. “We are forgetting to look at the bigger picture. Behind every statistic is a person. Is this government comfortable with children growing up in cramped hotel rooms? “Is this government comfortable with pensioners who have been given notices to quit entering homeless services? Under this

Fine Gael government the number of over 65s in emergency accommodation increased 60%. “It appears from the Government’s response this week that they are. Hotel rooms and hubs are their solution. The reality is there is not enough urgency in the government’s delivery of real homes. It comes down to choices and we will see if the government’s defensive rhetoric in the Dáil chamber will be reflected in the upcoming budget”.

Lack of investment causes ‘economic apartheid’ – Murphy Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy has commended students from St. Nathy’s College in Ballaghaderreen for their impressive presentation to Oireachtas members in Leinster House recently when they highlighted the decline and ‘economic apartheid’ of the BMW region. Fifth year students from the school delivered a presentation to Oireachtas members in the AV room of Leinster House recenty following an invitation by Deputy Murphy. The students were accompanied by their teacher, Martin Daly. “The students delivered a very professional and impressive presentation to Oireachtas members. They are campaigning for the abolishment of the Ten T Arc plan which shows the BMW region suffering ‘Economic Apartheid’ in terms of road, rail, port, and airport upgrades. They are also calling for the redrafting of Project Ireland 2040 with a view to ensuring ring fenced, committed finance for Ireland West International Airport Knock, a deep sea harbour in either Donegal or Mayo, approval of the Western Rail corridor and quality broadband amongst other issues. “Unfortunately a lack of serious investment in the region has resulted in the EU’s own statistics showing that the BMW region fell well behind the rest of the country by over 50% in regional GDP terms from 2007 to 2015. I would support the various points raised by the students particularly their proposal that Ireland West Airport Knock should be designated as a national airport in a bid to revitalise the western region. “The students appealed for unified support from their politicians to ensure capital investment in the BMW region and they must be commended for their hard work on this project”.

THANKSGIVINGS PRAYER FOR THE INTERCESSION OF ST. PIO OF PIETRELCINA Dear God, You generously blessed Your servant, St. Pio of Pietrelcina, with the gifts of the Spirit. You marked his body with the five wounds of Christ Crucified, as a powerful witness to the saving Passion and Death of Your Son. Endowed with the gift of discernment, St. Pio labored endlessly in the confessional for the salvation of souls. With reverence and intense devotion in the celebration of Mass, he invited countless men and women to a greater union with Jesus Christ in the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Through the intercession of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, I confidently beseech You to grant me the grace of (here state your petition). Glory be to the Father… (three times). Amen. A.K. NOVENA TO SAINT MARTHA Saint Martha, I resort to thy aid and protection. As proof of my affection and faith, I offer thee this light, which I shall burn every Tuesday. Comfort me in all my difficulties and through the great favors thou didst enjoy when the Savior was lodged in thy house, intercede for my family, that we be provided for in our neccessities. I ask of thee, Saint Martha, to overcome all difficulties as thou didst overcome the dragon which thou hadst at thy feet. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Recite the following prayers... Our Father. Hail Mary. Glory Be. A.K.

SPORTING WORLD WITH DAN DOONER

@dan_dooner

How much technology do we really need? THE LEAD STORY Dan Dooner It’s June Bank Holiday Monday in 2026 in a bar somewhere in rural Ireland. The only sound is an antique clock on a wall which is adorned with yellow tinted photographs of the great teams of decades long gone. The bar is packed with craggy and not so craggy faced men and women. There is little chat save for the odd comment about who ‘coupled up’ in the most recent episode of Love Island. It’s six years since technology officially took over the world of sport and now ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘VAR’ are available at every GAA, soccer and rugby ground in Ireland and Europe. All ingame decisions are now made by computer programmes,

which are brought to you by Sony and Mastercard. By 2022 spectators gave up wondering if offside decisions were wrong or whether the ball had actually crossed the line the machines were never wrong so there was no longer a need to even discuss it. Back to real life present day and the hot topics of last weekend were a Tipperary goal that should never have been and Loris Karius’ retrospective concussion in the Champions League. It’s been a tough few days to be a Liverpool fan from Waterford but at least Sergio Ramos and a flag happy umpire have given the rest of us something to talk about! Sport, like real life, is not always fair. The good guys don’t always win and sometimes ‘evil’ prospers. It can be heart-

breakingly random and unexpectedly glorious all in the one week. Your team can win a soft penalty before conceding a questionable goal in the dying seconds and all at the whim of men in black shirts or white coats. The luck and injustice is what powers millions of conversations the world over. Sport needs villains of the piece as much as it needs heroes, whether it’s a dastardly Spanish centre half or an excitable man with a green flag. Don’t get me wrong, technology has its place, but too much technology will take game defining decisions out of fallible human hands and result in sport becoming more predictable. Is that what we really want or can we just continue to rely on the universe to even it all out? Goal-line technology has its place but where will it end?

Athlone’s annual Club Classic takes place on Friday, 22nd and Saturday, 23rd and all support would be appreciated for this fundraising event. Meanwhile, Eunan McBrearty won the gent’s 9-hole Carnoustie qualifier last week and will join Maura Kelly from the ladies’ club in the regional qualifier next Friday (15th) in Tubbercurry. Other recent winners in Athlone include: Thomas Gilhooly (Gent’s singles with 38 points); John Galvin and Adrian Hurley (Gent’s Scotch Foursomes with 39 points); Kevin Kelly (Singles Stableford with 40 points);

SICK AS A PARROT/OVER THE MOON ROSCOMMON & DISTRICT LEAGUE NEWS

Dooner’s weekend predictions And so the curtain is set to fall on another season in the Roscommon & District Football League. Moylough ’79 clinched their Second Division double with a narrow win over Glen Celtic in the Division Two final last weekend while St. Peter’s remain on course for the ultimate RDFL treble following their Premier Division Cup thumping of Boyle Celtic last weekend. RDFL giants Ballinasloe Town are all that stands between the Athlone side and a clean sweep in their first year in the league. They meet in Lecarrow this Sunday for what promises to be a fitting

Horses for Courses

end to the 2017/2018 season.

Sunday, June 10th RDFL Challenge Cup Final (3 pm) At Lecarrow: St. Peter’s FC v Ballinasloe Town The champions and Premier Division Cup winners have to be favourites here but Ballinasloe proved to be a thorn in their side already this season. The Town, looking for their tenth Challenge Cup, have certainly got the experience and appetite for the big occasion and players of real quality throughout their squad.

Racing in Ireland today is at Leopardstown on the flat and performing at the Bulmer’s Live Music Festival are the brilliant Hothouse Flowers. Tomorrow the action is over the sticks at Clonmel and the first of a 2-day meeting on the level at headquarters, The Curragh, stalls open for the first at 4 pm and on Saturday at 2.10 pm. Sunday is a blank day on the calendar and on Monday the first of the two meetings at Lenebane A maiden, Forever Together, lost her maiden tag with victory in none other than the Epsom Oaks on Friday. Trained by Aidan O’Brien, who had 5 of the 9 runners, and ridden by his son Donnacha she won by 4½l from Wild Illusion with stablemates Bye Bye Baby and Magic Wand a further 3½l and 3l back in 3rd and 4th. In the Coronation Cup everybody thought that Detorri on John Gosden’s Cracksman only had to turn up to collect but Sylvester Kirk and Silvestre de Sousa had other ideas as Salouen went on over two out and was only caught by the hotshots in the shadow of the post with Windstoss 3rd. On Saturday, twenty-three years after the Maktoum family won the Derby with Lammtarra, the race was finally won by the royal blue silks of Godolphin for the first time. Masar, owned by Sheikh Mohammed, trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick powered up the hill to win from Dee Ex Bee and Roaring Lion by 1½l and ½l. The Ballydoyle trained odds on favourite Saxon Warrior was 4th and the Dermot Weld trained Hazapour 5th. First and second were both bred by Godolphin and the runner-up is owned by Sheikh Mohammed’s son. O’Brien passed the total achieved by Vincent O’Brien, his predecessor at Ballydoyle, and become only the fourth man in history to train 7 Derby winners.

However, St. Peter’s seem to score goals from everywhere and are the team with momentum. Ballinasloe have beaten the champions and drawn with them in the league this season and should put it up to them once again this Sunday. However, I’m siding ever so slightly with Peter’s. Lenebane Preview On Monday there is a flat card, well supported by the trainers, opening with the Foran Equine EBF Auction Maiden for 2-Y-O over 7f with 26 entries followed by a claiming maiden for 3-Y-Os only with 20 entries and also over the min distance. There are 16 in the third race on the card, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap for 3-Y-O+, with next the largest entry of the day, 45, a Handicap for 4-Y-O+ again these races are over 7f. The distance increases to 1m 2f for 2 races with a 30 entry maiden for 3-Y-O+ and The Hydrotech Handicap is the penultimate race with 28. Racing closes with the Connaughton Auctioneers Handicap over 1m 4f and 43 entries. The action switches to jumping on Tuesday when the first two races are 2m hurdles, a maiden and a handicap. Dermot Hughes Car Sales then sponsor a 2m 4f Novice hurdle with OCR Waste Management covering the 3m handicap hurdle. The switch to major obstacles starts with the 2m Novice Chase and then we have the top national hunt race of the year on the course the Tote Sponsored Connaught National over 3m. Racing closes with a 2m Pro/Am bumper. The entries for this meeting are not to hand as we go to press. The best turned out is sponsored by Glamorous Dogs, Fuerty on Monday and YK Signs, Athleague on Tuesday. The music on after racing is supplied by Billy Garvan on both Monday and Tuesday evenings.

General News Yesterday WP Mullins announced the retirement of dual Cheltenham Gold Cup runner-up Djakadam in 2015 and 2016. He was 4th in 2017 and 5th this year. The 9-Y-O was owned by Rich Ricci and won back to back John Durkan Chas-

by Tom Red Masar, Roaring Lion, Saxon Warrior and Dee Ex Bee spread across the track.

Cracksman, rails, and Salouen battle it out at Epsom.

es in 2015 and 2016 and 5 other races. The 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner, Denman died on Tuesday at the age of 18. Denman, nicknamed The Tank, was renowned for his iron will on a racecourse and won 14 races from 24 starts. The highlight of his career was the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup win defeating stablemate Kauto Star by 7l. They met again over the next 3 years in the ‘blue riband’. In 2009 the placings were reversed with Kauto Star winning by 13l. In 2010 both were beaten when Denman finished 2nd to Imperial Commander and the Star fell four out when beaten. 2011 saw the pair finish runnerup, Denman, and third to Long Run. Denman retired in December. Denman, an ex-Irish point to pointer, claimed four Grade One races Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, Lexus Chase, Aon Chase, Royal and Sun Alliance Chase earning over £1million in prize money. The meeting at Kilbeggan last Sunday was cancelled due to circumstances beyond control of the manager and committee when there was no water supply available following a burst public water main in the area. The track’s managing director Paddy Dunican issued sincere apologies to all for any inconvenience caused. It was refixed for and ran on Tuesday, June 5th. William Haggas’s Sea Of Class will now aim for the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July having missed the Epsom Oaks last weekend. The Sea The Stars filly will hope to have another run before coming to Ireland. Only 2 of the first 5 home in the Derby, Roaring Lion and Hazapour, will definitely not be going to the Curragh for the Irish equivalent as trainers John Gosden and Dermot Weld will drop their charges back in dis-

tance as they did not appear to get the trip at Epsom.

Point to Point Finale The point to point season drew to a close at Ballingarry on Sunday with Barry O’Neill leading and champion rider, 8 ahead of Derek O’Connor. In the ladies’ championship Liz Lalor finished on 13, 7 ahead of Maxine O’Sullivan. Shane Fitzgerald rode a winner on Monday to draw level with Sean O’Keeffe on 11 winners and share the novice rider’s title. Leading trainers was Wexford man Colin Bowe. Roll on September/ October!

Competition Time Winners of our 3 pairs of double tickets in Roscommon next Monday and Tuesday are Paul Finnegan, Ballygar, Michelle Frayne, Ballaghaderreen and Maura McGrath, Moylough. Don’t forget to collect your tickets in the office and hope you have 2 enjoyable and successful days racing in one of Ireland’s most welcoming race tracks. Tribesmen set for Roscommon

World Cup almost here… It is hard to believe that the 2018 World Cup will start next week and there is hardly a word about it. Maybe when the matches actually start there will be more interest.

Ireland head Down Under The Irish rugby team face Australia in the first of three tests this Saturday and this will be a huge tour for Joe Schmidt’s team as they look ahead to the World Cup next year. Ireland have brought a full strength team and it will be interesting to see if they can win all three tests. Ireland are now the established number two team in the world and the Aussies would love to take them down a peg or two. I am really looking forward to the games. We can just hope and pray that there are no serious injuries.

So now we know, Galway will be coming to Dr Hyde Park on the 17th of June for the Connacht senior final and although it is great to have a home venue, the Tribesmen look a formidable outfit after the thrashing they handed out to Sligo in the semi-final last weekend. But there is an advantage in knowing what to expect and I am sure Kevin McStay and his ‘brains trust’ will be making plans to deal with the challenge of Galway. It will certainly not be easy and their tally of 4-24 against Sligo is a huge score against any opposition. Every championship game is different and Roscommon will go into the match as underdogs but with a good chance of retaining their title. We will go into the final in far more detail next week but it is a day that we can all look forward to. After all the controversy last week the situation was resolved eventually that the game can now be played at Dr Hyde Park. A number of people worked very hard in the background to resolve the situation and they have to be congratulated. Let’s hope that the issue does not come up again.

Dr Hyde Park is a fine venue and very suitable for big games. There is now a top class surface there and over the years the work that is required at the venue can be carried out. I know that all this costs big money but there are other counties in far more debt than we are in Roscommon. The conditions set down by the Connacht council in their statement (it’s detailed elsewhere in the paper) are tough, but when the work is carried out we will have a venue that will be one of the best in the country. I am also glad the match is in Dr Hyde Park for Club Rossie and the people who are trying to raise funds to keep Roscommon GAA going. It would have been a far more difficult task if the Connacht Final was taken away from Dr Hyde Park. It’s time to move on with a new era for our county ground. There are many people, my own late father included, who was one of the people involved in buying the land for Dr Hyde Park all those years ago, keeping a watching brief from just across the wall who would be happy that the situation is resolved this week.

Championship Watch All-Ireland SFC Qualifiers Round 1 (All games on Saturday except for London v Louth which is on Sunday). I am predicting wins for Wexford (v Waterford), Derry (v Kildare), Tyrone (v Meath), Cavan (v Wicklow), Offaly (v Antrim), Mayo (v Limerick), Armagh (v Westmeath) and Louth (v London).

Leinster SHC Round Robin on Saturday at 7 pm Kilkenny v Wexford This promises to be a cracker, Kilkenny are motoring along nicely again and Wexford will have to recover from a fairly tough day against Galway last weekend. Kilkenny at home should come through but Wexford will give it everything. Prediction: Kilkenny

Great wins for hurlers and U-20s!

Galway v Dublin

There were great wins for the U-20 footballers and the senior hurlers at the weekend. I was in Newbridge for the opening round of the Christy Ring Cup against Kildare four weeks previously. If you told me that evening on the way home after watching Roscommon lose by 26 points that the same team would easily beat Mayo to retain their Christy Ring Cup status I would be calling for the men in the white coats. But in fairness to all concerned they turned their season around and they were never in trouble last Saturday and they won in style. Well done to players and management. On Saturday night the U-20 footballers could have been ten points down at half-time against Sligo but they put in an excellent second half display to win with a bit to spare. They now face Galway on Saturday next and I understand that Galway are really strong at this level so Roscommon will be up against it. But at underage level you never know what might happen. But I have to agree with the comments about the timing and running of this competition. The U-17 and U-20 grade were brought in with a view to not having lads playing inter-county football and having to do the Leaving

Leinster SFC Semi-Finals in Croke Park on Sunday Carlow v Laois at 2 pm There won’t be much between these neighbours who have surprised a lot of people to get this far. They met in the League Division 4 final, which Laois won. The O’Moore County might repeat that dose here. Donie Kingston will be the key man. Prediction: Laois

Dublin v Longford at 4 pm A great day out for Longford but no analysis needed here. Prediction: Dublin

Cert. However, it turns out now that at least five Roscommon players are doing the Leaving and are ruled out, while the U-17 competition, which has very few if any players doing exams, is off until after the exams are over! It makes no sense at all. It is also unfair that the U-20 competition in Connacht is not round

robin like it is in other provinces. Sligo trained from the start of the year to play Roscommon last Saturday night and they are out after one game, which is very unfair. Maybe the authorities will look at it again for next year. If it is knock-out for the entire country then so be it but let every province go with the same format.

Time to look at technology?

The Waterford players and management were left incensed by the umpires last Sunday as Tipperary were awarded a very questionable goal.

Galway look a class apart so far and at home they should easily account for a Dublin team who won their most important game against Offaly last Sunday. Prediction: Galway

The mistake made by the umpire and referee at last Sunday’s game between Tipperary and Waterford was as bad as I have ever seen in a major game. Fair play to the Waterford players and management afterwards who were so understanding. Even though it was an unforgiveable error I have sympathy for the umpire. I spent a few years travelling around the country with Joe Kearney doing umpire at various inter-county games some years ago and it is not as easy

a job as one might think. Thankfully we had no major controversies over that time! It is an even harder job to do a hurling umpire’s job as the ball is smaller and flies much faster. We are all human and can make mistakes but last Sunday’s error will once again bring to the fore the debate about technology and whether it might be possible to have it at all big grounds. It may not be financially viable but it should be looked into.

Donegal v Down on Sunday in Clones at 4 pm The well-deserved win for Fermanagh against Monaghan has electrified the Ulster championship and now these two will have an even greater pep in their step. If the Donegal big guns play they have the firepower to get over the line. Prediction: Donegal

Munster SHC on Sunday at 2 pm Limerick v Waterford Waterford have been decimated by injuries and last Sunday the officiating cost them a win against Tipp. Looks like it’s not their year. Limerick have been impressive. Prediction: Limerick

Tipperary v Clare The game of the weekend in hurling. Both teams need a win. Tipp are very inconsistent and Clare are finding their form. This will be a humdinger. Prediction: Clare

BREAKING BALL

Hurlers avoid relegation with Mayo win Christy Ring Cup Round 3 ROSCOMMON

1-17

MAYO

0-11

 SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon senior hurlers produced their best display in at least two years last Saturday in Athleague to easily dismiss the challenge of a surprisingly poor Mayo side thus preserving their status in the Christy Ring Cup for 2019. After losses to Kildare and Wicklow it was some transformation for Ciaran Comerford’s men who were dominant from the opening exchanges. Mayo’s case was certainly not helped by the loss through injury of their top scorer Kenny Feeney after

15 minutes, and the sending off of their midfielder Kieran McDermott as the ball was thrown in to commence the second half, but that’s taking nothing away from Roscommon who looked sharp throughout. On a warm day, Roscommon were quicker to every ball from the first whistle. They led by 0-5 to 0-1 after 22 minutes with goalkeeper Joe Keane scoring two long-range frees and Cathal Kenny helping himself to two from play. By the 35th minute the home side led by 0-9 to 0-3 before the victory was almost assured in first half

injury-time. There were 8 minutes of added time because of the delay due to the injury to Kenny Feeney. In the 40th minute Daniel Glynn’s free from 45 metres out near the sideline flew all the way into the Mayo net, and two minutes later Cillian Egan scored a fine point to leave the score at the break Roscommon 1-10 Mayo 0-3. Despite the efforts of football All-Star Keith Higgins, Mayo were always struggling and were in even more trouble when midfielder McDermott was sent off at the throw-in for the second half for a high pull. By the 53rd minute Roscommon led by 1-15 to 0-5 with goalkeeper Joe Keane having scored his 5th free of the day. In the 61st minute Micheal Beirne was sent off for a second yellow card offence

but at that stage Roscommon were home and hosed, and in injury-time sub Robbie Fallon also saw red for an off the ball incident. But none of that would take away from an excellent performance from Roscommon and those of us who were in Newbridge a few weeks ago and witnessed a twenty-six point hammering at the hands of Kildare could never have believed that this transformation was possible. Best for Roscommon on the day were Joe Keane, Alan Moore, Kerrill Hardiman, Shane Curley, Cathal Kenny and Naos Connaughton. Hopefully Roscommon can kick on from this and build for the future. It’s a pity that it will be next January before the team play again on the back of this performance. Roscommon: Joe Keane (0-

Young guns face uphill battle Eirgrid Connacht U-20 FC Semi-Final Galway v Roscommon on Saturday at Tuam Stadium at 4 pm  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon face an uphill task when they take on one of the favourites to win the All-Ireland U-20 title, Galway, in the Connacht semifinal in Tuam on Saturday. Roscommon’s hard fought win against Sligo in the quarter-final at Dr Hyde Park last Saturday will be an advantage to Shane Curran Roscommon manager Shane Curran will be hoping for huge performance from his charges in the Connacht U-20 and his players ahead of Saturday’s game. After a poor semi-final this Saturday. Pic: Mick McCormack

opening half Roscommon played some great football in the second half and 3-10 was a very good total. Roscommon will be anxious to get off to a better start this weekend and if they give Galway the same latitude that they afforded to Sligo last weekend in the opening quarter, then they will be in trouble. Roscommon look strong up the centre of the team with Luke Mollohan, Conor

Shanagher and Cian McKeon all making significant contributions last weekend and lads like Liam Cregg, Aidan Dowd, Declan McManus and Brian Derwin are all top class performers. It is a tough ask for these young players to peak once again within a week in a major championship game but that’s what they have to do. Galway will be the hot favourites to advance but anything can happen

at underage level and if the Roscommon defence can tighten up they can make life difficult for the home side. The prize for the winners is an appearance on Connacht final day on Sunday, June 17th at Dr Hyde Park, which is a very attractive prospect. Galway look good for a win at home but in championship football you never know. Prediction: Galway

Lovely hurling at Cumann na mBunscol finals! The Allianz Cumann na mBunscol hurling finals took place in Tisrara recently. First up were Attyrory and Rahara in the Tommy Connolly 5-a-side final. After a close first-half, the second half saw Rahara’s goalkeeper, Aaron Keen, make the difference as he helped his side to a narrow victory! Next up were Ballyforan and Creggs in the Eamon Fallon A final. The Dowd cousins, Eabha and Ciara, ably assisted the likes of Leo Flynn and Cathal Maloney for Creggs, and despite the best efforts of Eoin Dolan and his team-mates, Creggs were crowned the Eamon Fallon champions. Ballymurray and Newtown played

the Division 4 final. Under the steady stewardship of Gavin Staunton with help from his twin brother Luke, Kevin Beirne, and Kai Naughton, the Ballymurray men powered to victory. In the Division 3 final, St. Coman’s Wood made their maiden voyage against Glanduff NS. While the Roscommon town team gave a fantastic account of themselves, it was Glanduff captain Conor Gavin who raised the trophy for his school at the final whistle. In the Division 2 final, Gaelscoil de hÍde faced old rivals Fuerty. There were superb performances all over the field from both teams but in truth, Gaelscoil’s Rory Ó Cárthaigh was the outstanding performer in an

exciting game and it was he who accepted the trophy at the final whistle on behalf of his team. In the A final, Tisrara NS faced Knockcroghery NS. Tisrara got off to a quick start, with forwards Brian Mannion and Daniel Bolger scoring freely and while it was a hardfought contest in many ways, the result was never in doubt. It was to rapturous applause that the final whistle blew, as both sets of supporters acclaimed their heroes. Knockcroghery captain Cathal Feerick received the Division 1 trophy for his school, while Conor Kelly accepted the Michael Kelly County champions’ trophy for the victors, Tisrara NS.

Celtic Challenge win! Referee Aidan Ferguson is pictured presenting the ‘Best and Fairest’ award to Roscommon full-forward Paddy Grehan, following Roscommon U-17 hurlers’ 4-17 to 1-18 Celtic Challenge Cup win over Donegal last Wednesday evening. Grehan was in fine form for the Rossies as Michael Kelly (2) and Sean Trundle goals fired them into a 3-7 to 0-11 half-time lead. They weathered a Donegal storm early in the second half before substitute Padraig Galvin fired the decisive goal and Roscommon went on to record their first win in the competition this year.

Rossies make wasteful Sligo pay Eirgrid Connacht U-20 Football Championship Quarter-Final ROSCOMMON

3-10

SLIGO  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon’s U-20 footballers turned in a super second half display to overcome Sligo and qualify for a semi-final tilt at Galway next Saturday after this very enjoyable if somewhat strange quarter-final played in perfect weather conditions at Dr Hyde Park last Saturday night. Sligo dominated the first half play. They scored two goals, hit the post three times, had what looked like a perfectly good goal disallowed, and kicked 11 wides. Yet when it came to the half-time whistle it was Roscommon who led (1-5 to 2-1). The home side made Sligo pay dearly for their wastefulness with a much-improved display in the second period and they were the deserved winners in the end. Sligo looked so dangerous going forward in the opening quarter. Conor Shanagher opened the scoring with a Roscommon point in the 2nd minute but it was pretty much one-way traffic af-

3-5 ter that. Red Óg Murphy was winning everything in attack and he caused mayhem early on for the Roscommon defence. In the 4th minute Murphy played in Adrian Frain for a Sligo goal but it was disallowed by referee Liam Devenney for some unknown reason. In the 4th minute Murphy was in for a Sligo goal after a great pass from Rory McHugh, and the same player was on target again for another goal in the 10th minute after he had pointed from play a minute earlier. Roscommon were now six points down and struggling. Sligo continued to look dangerous going forward but incredibly they were not to score again in the half as the ball sailed wide of the post time after time. Roscommon began to get a foothold, and although they had limited possession, they gave their opponents a lesson on how to finish. David McManus pointed a free and then Cian McKeon finished a great Rossie move to the Sligo net for a badly needed goal in the 17th minute.

Points from Brian Derwin (a superb effort), goalkeeper Aaron Brady (a free) and Paul Carey before the break saw Roscommon go in leading 1-5 to 2-1. The home side made full use of their good fortune after the break and were a totally different team. Conor Shanagher, Luke Mollohan and Cian McKeon were in command and the scores started to flow. McKeon and Murphy exchanged points early on before Roscommon scores from Derwin and David McManus (2 frees) saw the home side ahead by 1-9 to 2-2 by the 40th minute. Murphy’s 42nd minute point for Sligo was only brief respite as Roscommon turned the screw. In the 45th minute a peach of a pass from Brian Derwin set Cian McKeon up

for his second goal of the game and when Aidan Dowd fisted home Roscommon’s third goal in the 49th minute after a great team move it was all over as a contest. The game petered out after that with Sligo midfielder Barry Gorman scoring their third goal with what was the last kick of the game in the 4th minute of injury-time. It was a great second half showing from Roscommon but if they start as slowly as they did here when they face a hotly fancied Galway in Tuam next Saturday, they can forget about going any further in this competition. Aidan Dowd, Luke Mollohan, Conor Shanagher, David McManus, Cian McKeon and Brian Derwin were impressive on the night for

Shane Curran’s team while for a Sligo outfit who have only themselves to blame for not putting the game out of reach in that opening 20 minutes, Red Óg Murphy and Luke Towey were by far their best performers. Roscommon: Aaron Brady (0-1, free); Liam Cregg, Evan Flynn, Garry Galvin; Aidan Dowd (1-0), Luke Mollohan, Darren Nerney; Conor Shanagher (0-1), Eddie Nolan; David McManus (0-3, free), Damien Duff, Ciaran Lawless; Paul Carey (0-1), Cian McKeon (2-2), Brian Derwin (0-2). Subs: Dylan Ruane for Lawless (19), Keith Murphy for Duff (h/t), Lorcan Daly for Galvin (43), Michael Conroy for Nerney (49), Gavan Byrne for McManus (53), Stephen Lennon for Nolan (60).

Curran takes aim at championship organisers  SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon U-20s manager Shane Curran praised his side’s courage and commitment as they recovered from a difficult first half to surge to victory over Sligo in the Connacht semi-final last Saturday at Dr Hyde Park. “They are a great bunch of lads. Any

other team would have been out of the game at half-time. We could have been 10 or 11 points down but our lads are courageous, very enthusiastic and committed and they have proven that over the months of preparation we have done. Things went against them in the first half but they found a way, and that what good teams do and we did that today,” he said.

Curran then took aim at the organisers of the U-20 Connacht Championship. “I have five players doing the Leaving that we could not pick, top-class players. I’m very critical of the way this competition is being ran and it is up to the authorities to get it right. I would say the exact same thing if we were beaten here tonight.

“It is very difficult on those Sligo lads in there tonight. They have put in a huge effort. They are a small county like ourselves and for them to be going home without another game in this competition is scandalous. “We have to turn around now and play Galway in Tuam next Saturday. It’s a player welfare issue if nothing else.

Hopefully the administrators will get it right for next year but as far as we are concerned it’s all about player development. “We are developing some very good young players in Roscommon and they are learning what is required to become championship footballers and tonight is a step along the way,” he concluded

It’s a Yes – Hyde to host final …but it won’t be considered as future final venue unless facilities are improved  SEAMUS DUKE

There was relief in sporting and business circles in Roscommon this week when the saga surrounding the choice of venue for the upcoming Connacht Senior Football Final ended with confirmation that the game will go ahead in Dr. Hyde Park on June 17th. The decision is conditional on Roscommon County Board meeting certain requirements laid down by the Connacht Council and the venue will have a re-

duced capacity, due to ongoing issues that require attention at Dr. Hyde Park. The decision to host the 2018 Connacht SFC Final at Dr. Hyde Park was formally taken after the Galway v Sligo semi-final last Sunday and followed discussions between Roscommon County Board and Connacht Council officials. The match will go ahead at Dr. Hyde Park between Roscommon and Galway, with a 4 pm throw-in. Confirmation of the venue choice follows weeks of speculation that Hyde Park might not be selected. Roscommon manager Kevin McStay intervened in the controversy after his side’s semifinal win over Leitrim, insisting that the game would be played in Roscommon. The Connacht Council has issued a statement confirming that the capacity

for the match will be 18,870 and that it will be an all-ticket affair. The statement also says that the costs of a mobile scanning system to be introduced especially for the day is be borne by Roscommon County Board. It also says that the ground rent to be paid on the day will be 5% (it’s usually more like 10-20%). The statement goes on to say that Dr. Hyde Park in Roscommon would not be considered as a venue for any future Connacht finals until a programme of works are carried out which include a new entrance on the Athlone Road side of the ground, permanent turnstiles, new dressing rooms, new male and female toilets, the area behind the stand to be tarred and other issues relating to the Slattery Report to be addressed.
