Assignment one: a monochromatic headshot of a fictitious author set into a dust jacket of an example book.

Original photographs above and below show how the image has been processed to fit the brief. The photograph was taken in colour rather than monochrome and processed to black and white using Photoshop because this way of producing monochrome images can produce a greater array of tones so that there is more depth in the final image

Assignment two (previous page): a picture only feature focusing on the fashion and usuage of any items which are used to carry other items in (bags, suitcases, clutches). This work has been inspired both by Bill Cunningham and impressionist art.

Assignment three: for this assignment I designed a call sheet using InDesign (right), I then filled in the call sheet with the information from my group’s (2) magazine shoot with me as the photographer. The filled out version is included overleaf.

Assignment seven

Module Appraisal Throughout this module skills have been developed in a variety of areas, these include; studio lighting, portraiture, fashion photography, managing a shoot, converting image files for multiple applications and designing and bringing together aspects of a shoot, from idea to end product. Particular areas of improvement are graphic design and visualising what a given project will require before photographing. Practice based research has been used to ensure certain elements appear correctly in photographs, some of the most successful examples of learning in this way have been submitted in my work journal. More interpersonal skills have been developed through regular requirement to take photographs of different people. I have learned that in order to get the best results from models the photographer must be confident and reassuring because this transfers to the model. If the photographer is noticeably stressed this also tends to transfer on to the model and they may become less confident and more importantly look less confident in the photographs. Through regular usage of the Phase One IQ140 medium format camera I have become much more advanced at using this system, this is useful for further studio shoots as this type of camera is synonymous with studio photography. Although I already knew how to use the Bowens Flash heads I can say that through so much practice using them this module I can very quickly assemble and take down the travel pack version of these lights along with their attachments (soft-box, diffuser, beauty dish, reflector). I can also determine and solve any basic problems, which come with their operation. The Photographs I am most proud of from this module are the ones from assignments one and four (author and magazine cover). For assignment one I think the expression on the models face looks very natural and the light and direction of the eyes give the portrait a dreamy feel. I also really like the effect of the light shining through the window at an angle from behind the model, creating a halo effect around the head and face and just catching the tops of the fingers. I am really pleased with the way the magazine shot turned out and I think the graphic quality of the cover works well with the final image. I especially like the positioning and look of the gun however it must be noted that an older type gun may have strengthened the photograph’s old time feel. The most difficult part of this module I found was getting to grips with what was actually expected. This was helped by checklists, which were released in the last week of the module but before then things were quite unclear and this was worsened by the fact that everybody on the course seemed to have a different idea about what was required. I am sure my work suffered due to this because I was often confused whether a lot of what I was doing was correct. Although there were a multitude of obstacles to overcome, during this module I feel I have rose to the challenges and made significant improvements in my work and practice around photography.

Final Assignment (8) For this assignment I assumed the role of a producer and collected the profiles of individuals and organisiations I would bring together to produce a shot. This information would in theory be given to a client who would then be able to make an informed decision about whether or not to hire me as their producer. The profiles are shown on the next pages.
