ROSEANNA GYLES “The production of too many useful things results in too many useless people” Karl Marx The photographs exhibited here underpin Roseanna’s research into the fall of Soviet communism and its continued effect on countries of the former USSR, specifically Bulgaria and Romania. These two bordering countries were chosen due to their close geographical and historical relationships. Roseanna’s research has revealed these similarities and led to the discovery that a large majority of Bulgaria and Romania’s social, political and economic issues seem to be rooted in an overwhelming and long underlying corruption of power. These photographs show, in a creative way; what this current situation is doing to the state of Bulgaria, a country that was once one of the most successful countries within the Soviet bloc, and is now one of the least successful in the European Union. This country is one of the most extreme examples of the effect of the fall of Soviet communism.

ALEXANDER KOSCIAN “Instead of controlling the environment for the benefit of the population, perhaps it’s time we controlled the population to allow the survival of our environment.” David Attenborough, 2011 Proudly hailing from Kingston Upon Hull, Alex Koscian is a photojournalist with aspirations of success in an industry bursting with an ever-increasing number of practitioners. In an age in which anybody with a smartphone and a social media account can consider themselves photojournalists, Alex seeks to bring the prestige back to a withering art. This series of images explores Britain’s National Parks, and how they are rapidly being forgotten for the natural wonders they are. Across the world, vast areas of natural and ecological importance are diminishing, and within the UK this is no different. Threats such as fracking, mining, and urban expansion, are putting the natural world under pressures not seen on this planet since the last major extinction event 66 million years ago – only this time we are to blame. Humanity’s ever increasing ego and greed has led us to completely destroy such vast ecosystems and habitats, and now the last few remaining areas are too under threat. We have to ask ourselves: “is this really the legacy we want to leave on this planet?”
